live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> it's the kind of glitter you don't want to see on the ground. shattered car windows, an indication of a growing problem of car break-ins. new data shows just how bad the issue has become in san francisco. thank you for joining us, i'm natasha zouves. kristensy sze is off today. this has become so commonplace, it happened so fast, no neighborhood is immune. new data shows the problem just continues to grow. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in san francisco. she joins us from castro and 19th. amy? >> reporter: natasha, san francisco's "examiner" newspaper is reporting that the break-ins are up 26% in san francisco this

year. we took that report card out here to the streets and talked to people about it. we did not find any shock, people here tell us it's part of life. san franciscans are starting to expect car break-ins like this one. they are just getting savvy in their efforts to protect their possessions. >> i have a 9-year-old, i'm always telling him clean the inside of the car out cle completely, if it's dirty socks, put it in the trunk. anything seems to trigger people. >> reporter: residents say they just assume it will happen, not that it won't. >> you don't leave anything in your car, sometimes you get your windows smashed even if there isn't anything in your car. my friend got broken into for a bag of trash. >> reporter: casey has also been a victim. >> we have two cars and we've gotten broken into four or five times the last two years. >> reporter: even those who don't have cars still deal with the aftermath of break-ins. >> it's more of a surprise to get out of a car and not step n on, you know, crumpled glass.

it's a shame. >> reporter: no one was surprised when we told them about a report in the "san francisco examiner" says car break-ins are up 26% this year, as police dou patrols to try to prevent the break-ins. >> sounds like an epidemic. don't know what's causing. it seems like it's a cheap way to get something and get away with it. >> reporter: some question if increasing the police presence is really the answer. >> the break-ins are a symptom. the cause, in my opinion, is drug addiction. and people committing petty crimes for money for things and so the solution lies elsewhere, i think, so, get people help. >> reporter: we have made several attempts to reach out to the police department this morning, but we're still waiting to hear back. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. new this morning, more than a dozen women are accusing an east bay chef of sexual harassment. restaurant owner charlie

hallowell facing allegations by 17 of his former employees. the report says he has stepped away from day-to-day operations of his oakland based restaurants including penrose. he told the "chronicle" he's ashamed and sorry. happening today, the man accused of plotting a christmas terror attack at san francisco's pier 39 is expected to make a second court appearance. 26-year-old ex-marine everitt aaron jameson scheduled for a detention hearing at 2:00 this afternoon in fresno. he was inspired by isis. accused of attempting to provide material support to a terrorism organization. jameson's attorney says he'd plead not guilty. san francisco police are stepping up patrols for this weekend's fireworks show along the embarcadero. according to a threat report obtained by abc 7 news, there's no specific credible threat associated with the city's new

district this morning around 9:30 at 17th avenue and california street. officials believe a crew may have hit the gas line. a muni line was temporarily rerouted. there were no evacuations. mountain view police are investigating a deadly crash involving a motorcyclist and tech commuter bus. the crash happened just after 6:00 last night at the intersection of north shoreline boulevard and plymouth street. that is near the google campus. witnesses tell abc 7 news several people rushed to help the motorcyclist but unfortunately he was unresponsive. police have not yet identified him. a google spokeswoman issued a statement say ling "we're sadded to learn of this tragic incident. our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy." firefighters are saying thank goodness a group of cle g college students were in the right place at the right time, credited with helping save a man in the south bay overnight. ark ab 7 news reporter matt keller is live in los gatos. >> reporter: natasha, it's beautiful in quick silver park. it's also remote.

one man found out how dangerous it can be when things go wrong. it wasn't christmas lights but a flashlight that caught the attention of this group of college students home for the holidays. >> we're driving down hicks road and see a light flashing from over there. we agreed to pull over then get out of the car and hear a guy moaning like he's in pain. >> reporter: they called 911. firefighters had to cross a dry patch at the gauadeloupe creek between san jose and los gatos to reach the homeless map believed to be in his 60s. he fell off a ten-foot cliff in the dark and broke his leg. combine that with the cold temperatures and remote area, you have a very dangerous situation that required a rescue. >> for them to see him flashing his light, he was probably 150 yards away from the roadway. and they're driving by, maybe 35 miles an hour. so he's incredibly lucky to be found. >> reporter: it took

firefighters an hour and a half to get the victim to the ambulance. he was stable when he was taken to the hospital. as for these students, they were happy to see the man get the help he needed on a night they'll never forget. >> pretty exciting, right? >> yeah. >> adrenaline rush. >> reporter: the firefighters say this was a two-part rescue, since the man was stable, they didn't require a helicopter to take him to the hospital. reporting live in los gatos, matt keller, a bc 7 news. a santa rosa donation site that helped north bay victims had to be shut down early. kept being targeted in break-ins and vandalism. there have been three incidents in the ralast to weeks accordin to the "press democrat." volunteers packed up all of the donated items yesterday. they plan to ship them to other donation sites. new parents and people caring for sick relatives can take more time off work to care for loved wu ed ones starting j

1st. a new law taking effect expands the state's family leave bill. employees at small businesses will get up to 12 weeks of leave to care for a newborn or adopted child. the amount of money you receive will also expand up to 70% now of your salary depending on income. the benefits are funded through employee contributions. >> so it's no cost to the employer, it is actually paid for by the worker. so it really is a win/win. allows people to stay home, take care of their family needs and not worry as much asbout paying the bills or financial commitments. >> critics say the law the will only make it harder for small businesses to stay open. hard-fought senate election in alabama earl yer this month is back in the news again. the gop's roy moore is refusing to accept defeat. he's filing a lawsuit now to delay certification of the results. the winner, democrat doug jones, is filing a motion to dismiss that suit. here's abc's gloria riviera. ♪ living in a fantasy >> reporter: this is the victory roy moore won't accept. his opponent, the democrat, doug

jones, fnarrowly beating him to win alabama's senate seat. >> when the vote is this close, it's not over. >> reporter: overnight, moore filing a last-minute complaint claiming election fraud. in a statement, the moore campaign saying "this is not a republican or democrat issue as election integrity should matter to everyone." but alabama's secretary of state, a republican, is denying moore's request to delay certifying jones until a thorough investigation can take place. the jones campaign has filed a motion to dismiss and says in a statement, "this desperate attempt by roy moore to subvert the will of the people will not succeed. the election is over. it's time to move on." the alabama senate race was dominated by multiple charges against moore of sexual misconduct against minors. beverly nelson, one of the eight women to accuse moore. >> he was trying to pull me toward -- in between his legs. it was terrible. >> reporter: throughout the campaign, moore denied the allegations, and in his complaint, moore takes that

welcome back. san francisco is moving forward with plans to authorize safe injection sites for drug users. the sites would provide safe places with clean needles and trained staff. san francisco has an estimated 22,000 injecting drug users. injection site in canada and europe have been shown to help prevent overdose deaths. funding and legal issues are significant hurdles to creating safe sites. a task force estimates the city could save $3.5 million because of reduced health care costs. also increased drug treatment uptake. health officials are developing policies for the program and will report to the board of supervisors in march. some good news for dog owners in the bay area. the national park service has officially withdrawn its plans to make new rules for dogs on leashes. a notice posted in the "federal

register" says the nps terminated the rule making process for its dog management plan. this comes after the decision in october when the park service said it would stop plans to expand on-leash areas in marin, san francisco and san mateo counties. environmental protection agency must for dangerous levels of lead in paint and dust within one year. the ruling says the epa's delay in setting new rules on when lead paint and dust in older houses poses a threat to wellfare. it must come up with a final rule one year later. today's morning money report, bitcoin prices are slumping again after south korea announced it is clamping down on the cryptocurrency. the government said today it's putting if place measures to cool speculation in bitcoin which surged by more than 1,300% this year. the measures include banning opening anonymous virtual currency accounts and new laws giving authorities the power to shut down digital currency

50 in santa rosa, 55 at 53 degrees. cared to yesterday, we had the fog. still at this hour anywhere from 2 to 6 degrees warmer. especially in the north bay. and san francisco. a view from the city here, good visibility today. great day to sightsee. lots of sunshine today. we'll see a dry new year's eve and day but it will be cloudier and bring the temperatures down a couple of degrees. at this point, forecast model looks like they're going to bring in rain and break down this ridge come tuesday into wednesday just in time for all you folks to get back to work perhaps. all right. looking at 30s and 40s overnight tonight. with those chilly conditions again. the clear sky, radiational cooling and maybe even a little bit of that patchy fog. we're counting down the dry days in december. 24. and you notice that today is another one. friday and saturday. so we'll be up to 26 dry days. but here's the good news, as we go into next tuesday and wednesday, there's a system
