we're back with an unusual crash in texas. about 40,000 pounds of avocados spilled across interstate 35 east when this big rig that was hauling them crashed and then caught on fire. the highway was closed in both directions for nearly three hours while crews cleaned up the scene. can't call that guacamole? >> no, i guess not. an appeals court in oregon has upheld a $135,000 fine for bakers who reproduced to make a cake for a lesbian couple. the owners of the now-closed bakery cited their religious beliefs when refusing to bake a cake for rachel and morgan. the oregon bureau of labor and industries found the bakers violated state laws that protect the lgbt community. melissa and aaron klein had appealed the decision, arguing their free speech and religious rights were violated. the dr. phil show is denying explosive allegations that it put guests on the show at risk and even supplied some of them

with drug and alcohol to get better ratings. a former member of "survivor" says there was a bottle of vodka in his dressing room when he appeared to talk about his alcohol problem. another claims someone from the show gave him xanax. in the 2013 appearance he was so drunk. you see here, he had to be helped onto the set. now others say producers told guests where they could buy heroin. lots of allegations flying. there's no direct comment from dr. phil mcgraw, who was paid a reported $80 million this year. the show says the allegations are, quote, unequivocally untrue. >> wow, some temptation there in the green room when you walk in. target has apologized for a product that makes fun of jewish people. cards against humanity, it is filled with jokes about the holocaust and anne frank.

good friday morning, everyone. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm eva pilgrim in for diane macedo. here are some of the top stories we're following on "world news now." new york's worst fire in decades leaves 12 people dead, one of them a young child. it forced survivors into the streets on a brutally cold night with wind chills in the single digits. more than half of the country is locked in a deep freeze. president trump seized on the frigid weather to cast doubt on climate change. he tweeted, quote, perhaps we could use a little bit of that good old global warming that our country, not other countries, was going to pay trillions of dollars to protect against, bundle up. apple is apologizing for a controversial decision to slow down older iphones with older batteries.

after facing customer backlash and multiple lawsuits, the tech giant is now slashing the price of replacement batteries for the next 12 months. and new york is taking unprecedented security measures for times square this new year's eve in a first. police plan to scene people going into hotels and restaurants and closing off a wider perimeter than ever before. those are some of our top stories that we're following on this last friday in 2017. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> epic, epic last friday here. hard to believe. the year has gone by really, really quickly. >> a tragic way to end the year. we begin with breaking news, what the mayor of new york city is calling an unspeakable tragedy. 12 people are dead, including a child are dead. >> at least three of the victims

are from the same family. you see the effort there to try to save some of those folks. some survivors were jolted out of their sleep and sent running into the freezing streets. >> some escaped wearing only a bathrobe and slippers and scrambled to find their loved ones. city officials described the loss of life as historic. >> this is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century, based on the information we have now, this will rank as one of the worst losses of life to a fire in many, many years. >> other than 9/11, this is the city's worst fire since a social club burned down in 1990. >> yeah, remember happy land social club, many new yorkers do. and 87 people were killed when a man set fire to that building also in the bronx. the cause of this fire, though, is under investigation. such a horrible thing for so many people.

the temperatures in the teens overnight in new york. and more than 60% of the country in the meantime is coping with those bitter and dangerous cold temperatures. about 200 million americans are in the path of the arctic blast. the frigid air has brought record low temperatures to some parts of the country, and it's not going to get warmer anytime soon. richard cantu shows us the worst of it. >> reporter: in erie, pennsylvania, scenes like this are common. plows are out trying to clear the 65-plus inches of snow that has fallen since christmas. >> the quantity that we got this time was just a completely unexpected. >> reporter: and in upstate new york, east of the great lakes, the roads are finally passable. crews using front end loaders to move those mountains of snow. thursday night, 200 million americans are caught in the deep freeze. temperatures in the northeast are 15-30 degrees below normal.

freezing fountains in new york and philadelphia. >> i used to live in russia. it feels pretty similar. >> reporter: this arctic chill shattering record after record. 17 below zero in flint, michigan. 32 buy low in watertown, new york. and in cotton, minnesota, an unbearable 41 below zero. >> when i left home, it was minus 40 on my thermometer. >> reporter: officials warning the cold can be deadly for the very old and very young. >> do not let children play outside for extended limits of time. >> reporter: at midway airport, it was too frigid to fly. and on long island, passengers left shivering. extreme cold causing a train rail to break. several buried under several feet of snow will see more. forecasters predicting another 16 inches in some spots. and the new year's eve ball drop, potentially the coldest since the 1960s. richard cantu, abc news, new

11-year-old son. investigators are not revealing how they died, but the police chief says he's never seen such savagery in more than 40 years on the job. the crime is raising fears in the neighborhood, because sources say it's similar to a 2014 quadruple murder miles away, and that case remains unsolved. an arizona man is under arrest accused of impersonating a police officer. they say he pulled over victims and handcuffed them while a dash cameras rolling and may have tried to score drugs. >> reporter: this dash cam video looks and sounds like a real traffic stop. but police say the man you see and hear in this video is no cop. >> just watching the video in this one, he's doing a lot of stuff that we do, which makes us think he's been watching what police do. >> reporter: in this video recorded last week you can see him putting a driver in handcuffs, but he couldn't find the key, telling the victim they had to go to police headquarters.

that's when they called 911. police later arresting the suspect. police say they found an unmarked white sedan, a red and blue light bar, a dash cam and a portable scanner. police charging him with impersonating a police officer and kidnapping. >> what you doin'? >> reporter: it is not the first time police have arrested alleged impersonators. this man is accused of posing to rob drugstores of prescription drugs. they say if you are pulled over and are suspicious ask for i.d. or call 911. marcus moore, abc news, dallas. a worker was killed when a trench collapsed at a construction site in ohio. the man was swallowed up by the dirt and buried alive during an excavation project. emergency crews took 11 hours to recover his body. a washington state family is suing alaska airlines for the escalator fall which they say caused the death of their 75-year-old grandmother.

they requested a gate to gate escort service during her trip from maui to spokane. their wheelchair-bound grandmother was helped off her flight from maui to portland. but she was left in the had terminal to find her next gate alone. she tumbled and crashed landing near the bottom with the heavy chair on top of her. she was pronounced dead in september. >> it's not going to bring her back, obviously, but someone needs to own up. someone needs to take responsibility. >> but the airline contends that their grandmother declined help in the terminal and says the family failed to check boxes indicating that she had any impairments like trouble seeing or hearing. and check out this video in the meantime. a plane crashed into a building after it was blown away from its parking area by strong winds at the airport in malta. emergency services were called to the scene, but no injuries were reported.

surveillance cameras rolling, capturing three armed robbers terrorizing workers at a bank in port st. lucie, florida. they jumped the counter, as you saw, and grabbed cash from one of the tellers. the suspects took off in a suv later found nearby. the workers were not injured. and a uber driver has been arrested after police caught him behind the wheel of a ferrari. i want to see who's taking people for uber in a ferrari. they pulled up next to the car that had just been reported stolen. >> so in a facebook post, the officers appeared to make light of the situation saying, if you're going to steal a $250,000 ferrari with the window sticker still on it, don't drive next to a police vehicle with a license plate reader. duh. >> yeah, obviously.

yeah, it is the last friday in 2017. >> the year's almost over. >> it is almost over. the new year's upon us. what a tragedy to end the year and begin the new year for a family here in the new york area. fire spreading through an apartment building in the bronx. >> at least 12 people are dead, including a 1-year-old. three of the victims are from the same family. the fire broke out on the first floor of the five-storey building. >> so dozens of screaming residents raced out of the building into the frigid temperatures. those temperatures in the teens as some ran out wearing only sandals. new york city's mayor calling it the worst fire in the city's, in decades. >> this is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century, based on the information we have now, this will rank as one of the worst

losses of life to a fire in many, many years. >> at least six other people are injured. four of them critically. there's no immediate word on what caused that fire. apart from 9/11, this is new york city's deadliest fire since an arsonist killed 87 people in a bronx social club back in 1990. more than 200 million americans are feeling the deep freeze this morning. that's most of us, more than 60% of the country. >> temperatures are plunging into record lows in the upper plains and parts of new england. we've even heard reports of below 40 degree -- or 40 below zero. >> yikes. >> abc's alex perez shows us the hardest-hit areas. >> reporter: 200 million americans bundled from head to toe. that dangerous cold snap gripping more than half the country. from the northeast where temperatures are 15-30 degrees below normal. freezing fountains in

philadelphia and new york. to chicago at midway airport, it was too cold to fly. more than 80 flights canceled. >> nobody offered any answers, no solutions or anything like that. >> reporter: officials warning the cold could be deadly, especially for the very young and very old. >> extreme weather is more than an inconvenience. it remains a serious and potentially life-threatening event. >> reporter: shelters overflowing with people trying to escape frigid temperatures. the arctic temps shattering record after record. 17 below zero in flint, michigan, 32 below in watertown, new york. and in cotton, minnesota, an unbearable 41 below zero. >> it feels like your skin is going to be on fire. >> reporter: it is colder in cotton than in parts of siberia. meanwhile, along the great lakes, plow drivers trying to plow through five feet of snow. dave spiegel had to hire a plow

to unbury his car. he said it's the first time he's been able to leave his house in three days. how massive was it? >> it was bad. you couldn't see anything. blizzard conditions. >> reporter: back breaking work for chuck, the day spent pushing his snow blower, clearing his home the sixth time this week. >> getting snowfalls like this are not that uncommon, but it's just the quantity we got this time was completely unexpected. >> reporter: crews have been working non-stop to try to clear the snow, truck after truck dumping their load. some of these piles are 12 feet high and now another winter storm watch and some spots could see an additional foot of snow on top of all this. alex perez, erie, pennsylvania. president trump is addressing the frigid conditions with a snarky comment appearing to question climate change.

opponent roy moore failed. a judge has now rejected moore's request to block certification of the senate election results. abc's stephanie ramos has the details. >> reporter: republican roy moore is still digging into voter fraud claims, even after democrat doug jones was officially declared the winner in that contentious alabama special election. >> this has been a very close race and we are awaiting certification by the secretary of state. >> reporter: moore didn't concede after the december 12th race, and he's not now, saying election fraud experts across the country have agreed that this is a fraudulent election. but even republican election officials debunking that claim. >> that question's been eliminated from anyone's thought and mind, period. >> reporter: and a judge agreed, tossing out moore's last-ditch lawsuit to stop certification. in that complaint, moore also claims he passed a polygraph test about the sexual misconduct accusations that derailed his campaign. however, the campaign offering no details to cnn.

>> he didn't know any of these women and he never conducted, engaged in sexual misconduct, what with a surprise to those who know him. it's not. >> reporter: u.s. senator-elect jones who won by more than 21,000 votes is set to be sworn in on january 3rd. this isn't over yet. moore has less than 48 hours to file an official petition to contest the election. he would, though, have to pay for it himself, and that could cost more than $1 million. stephanie ramos, abc news, capitol hill. senator al franken is thanking supporters as he prepares to officially step down next week following multiple allegations of sexual harassment. franken was overcome by emotion while addressing a crowd in minneapolis. he made it clear that he will continue to fight for what he believes in. >> i may be leaving the senate, but i'm not giving up my voice. we still have a lot of work to do together on issues ranging from net neutrality to climate change. >> his voice cracked a bit as he

thanked his wife pore his loyalty. he said serving in the senate is the honor of his life. a frightening scene in seattle as a shuttle van plowed into a crowded sidewalk during a busy lunch hour. at least six people were injured. it also crashed into a gap store sending pieces of glass flying. the driver had a medical emergency. police say there are no signs that this was deliberate. an escape attempt by a suspect came to a watery end in oregon, and it was all caught on video. >> this happened north of portland. police say the person driving that red pickup truck was wanted for trespassing. he tried to get away and drove right into the columbia river. >> let's not forget it's cold right now. >> yes. >> the getaway attempt didn't end there. he decided he would try to swim from police but came to his wits and swam back to them and was eventually arrested. just so you know, it was a three and a half-mile swim.

can't find half of her family. everything out here is frozen, except for her tears. >> i put them out through the window. there was smoke everywhere already. when i came through the door, i couldn't see the door. it was engulfed with smoke already. >> reporter: this resident says he got out on his second floor fire escape, no wallet, no phone, no shoes. shivering violently. all he has is this blanket someone gave him. he doesn't even know who. and now he has this. someone just gave him socks. >> you got to keep him warm. frostbite, that's the first thing. >> reporter: this neighbor out here, warming up feet of random strangers. his kindness in some ways enough to give these residents hope. >> i've been through three fires, it's not easy. >> reporter: he's not the only one out here opening up their arms in help. the red cross on site and these women from next door, bringing piles of jackets and sneakers. >> it's human nature. it's fine. it's fine. they're going to need it more than i am. >> reporter: it's like pouring

salt on a wound, some residents lost everything. now out in the cold, so cold they can't feel their bodies. but they could feel the pain of loss. stepan kim, abc news, the bronx, new york. 200 million americans are feeling the chill. take a look at lake erie. the surface iced over. it may experience a complete december freeze for the first time since 2000. here in new york city, a fountain in midtown manhattan has turned into an ice sculpture. this bitter cold is being felt all over from virginia north into new england and west to wisconsin and beyond. it will feel like minus 20 today in vermont, new hampshire and maine. turning to the russia investigation, president trump now says he believes that special counsel robert mueller will be fair to him. in a new interview with the "new york times," the president also repeated his claim that the investigation into meddling in the election is a hoax. he says it makes the country

look very bad. he also insisted that more than a dozen times that there was no collusion between moscow and his campaign. and the president told the "times" that he has nothing to hide so he's not bothered bit fact that he doesn't know when the investigation will end. and mr. trump also told the "times", that he's been soft on china when it comes to trade in hopes of getting china to step up pressure on kim jong un. he criticized china after newly-released satellite images appeared to show oil transferred between chinese and north korean ships in violation of the new u.n. sanctions. he tweeted, caught red-handed. very disappointed china is allowing oil to go into north korea. there will never be a friendly solution to the north korea problem if this continues to happen. despite a last-ditch legal challenge, doug jones has been certified as winner of alabama senate race. roy moore filed a complaint of voter fraud, but a judge denied

his request to stop election officials from certifying those results. jones will be sworn in next week as the first democratic senator from alabama in a quarter century. he's promising to be an independent voice working with members of both parties. we turn to new security precaution ahead of new year's eve. recent terror attacks have prompted police to have a launch a historic effort to protect the 2 million people expected to gather sunday night. that effort includes snipers and helicopters. abc's gio benitez shows us. >> reporter: the nypd taking unprecedented steps to protect the 1 million people expected to pack times square, closing off a wider perimeter this year than ever before. heavily-armed police at multiple check points. >> we have cop cars all over the place. >> reporter: the police commissioner giving us a rare look at some of the 10,000 cameras keeping a watchful eye.

from the ground to the air, helicopters lasering in on the crowds. what are your pilots going to be looking for on new year's eve from the air? >> they're going to be able to provide an overwatch for decision-makers and commanders on the ground to give them a strategic view. >> reporter: and on these high rises, snipers ready to act with pin point focus. >> there's a system in place to identify quickly if are you on the 12th floor or the 32nd floor of a building. >> reporter: crime in new york city is at its lowest level since the 1950s. but police aren't taking that for granted. the truck attack in the bike lane and the bombing in the subway keeping them on high alert from coast-to-coast, ramping up in the wake of the las vegas attack that killed 50 people. adding these barricades and doubling police. >> in previous years we had spotters. but this year they'll be accompanied by snipers to ensure safety if a threat is recognized.

we're back with an unusual crash in texas. about 40,000 pounds of avocados spilled across interstate 35 east when this big rig that was hauling them crashed and then caught on fire. the highway was closed in both directions for nearly three hours while crews cleaned up the scene. can't call that guacamole? >> no, i guess not. an appeals court in oregon has upheld a $135,000 fine for bakers who reproduced to make a cake for a lesbian couple. the owners of the now-closed bakery cited their religious beliefs when refusing to bake a cake for rachel and morgan. the oregon bureau of labor and industries found the bakers violated state laws that protect the lgbt community. melissa and aaron klein had appealed the decision, arguing their free speech and religious rights were violated. the dr. phil show is denying explosive allegations that it put guests on the show at risk
