it is the last friday of the year and you're here with us on this december 29th. >> i can't believe it. 2017 has flown by. drew is in for mike. reggie and alexis are still off. a really nice end to the final workweek of 2017. this morning we are dealing with fog. live doppler 7. visibility is an issue in the north bay. one to two miles from santa rosa to napa. if you're out and about early this morning and in the north bay you will encounter the fog. your 12-hour planner get rid of the fog midday and by the afternoon enjoy mild temperatures well into the 60s under mainly sunny skies. get a check of the roads with sue. predictably quiet. the log is very, very quiet. take a look outside and see what's happening on the san mateo bridge.

the taillights headed westbound on the causeway up to the high rise. over to 101 at about 14 minutes and then to san jose. these headlights are snaking their way up to cupertino, very light conditions and about an eight-minute drive from downtown san jose to wolf road and the mall in cupertino. >> sue, thank you. happening today the last-minute rush. expect long lines as people try to pay their property taxes before the ball drops on 2017. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in martinez with more. hi, amy. >> reporter: hi, jessica. expect to see long lines again today. you don't have to pay in person. the people we've talked to said they don't feel comfortable doing it online or on the phone this close to the end of the year. they want to make sure that payment gets made so they're coming here in person. here is what it looked like in the contra costa county office. they're doing this because the new tax law lifts tax deductions

to $10,000 after january 1st. some say they're dipping into their savings account to do this. others tell us they're borrowing from relatives, whatever it takes to get the payment in. that's why you see the large crowds. >> this is highly unusual. this time of year we have two or three people in the office. we have ten times more. >> reporter: county officials advise you consult your financial adviser before you make decisions about your tax payments. there are some county offices across the country that say they will open new year's eve for people, that is sunday. cook county in chicago is one of those. we'll ask around for you today, but as of now today is the last official day to get the payment in if that's what you want to do. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. this morning apple is apologizing to iphone owners for intentionally slowing down older phones, but is it enough? >> starting in late january,

apple will drop the price of replacement batteries to $29 instead of the original $79. reporter lonnie rivera spoke with a tech expert who says lower prices may help users hold on to their phones for longer. >> i, unfortunately, had to be one of the people who paid more. >> reporter: susan spent $79 on new battery for an her iphone 6. she's encouraged by apple's apology for the intentional slowdown of older phones and its offer to sell new batteries for $29. >> i'm glad they came out and admitted it. >> i think it's shady they didn't tell the public what they were doing. i'm glad it's been found out and they're remedying it. >> reporter: apple said first and foremost we have never and would never do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any apple product or degrade the user experience to upgrades.

apple now has to rebuild consumer trust. >> they're primarily a consumer company. what they have to contend with is they've broken trust on a level with their customers and with potential customers and they have to repair that somehow. >> reporter: he says dropping the price of battery replacements is a good step. >> lowering the cost of a replacement, doing the right thing as much as they can by their customers, i think there are people who would like it to be free. >> reporter: it's not clear what will become of lawsuits already filed against the company. apple's latest move make a difference? hard to say. it ultimately will be up to the millions of customers who use e phones. in san francisco, abc 7 news. some celebrations happening across the bay area not because of the new year but what will happen in the new year. that is the commercial adult sale of recreational marijuana. abc 7 news was on embarcadero in oakland where there was a long

line of people, many of them trying to stock up before new taxes take effect for them. >> they're not insignificant. the price of cannabis could go up as much as 30%, 40% on certain products and that's, i think, going to be a shock to folks. >> customers must be at least 21 and have a valid i.d. only shops with local licenses can sell recreational marijuana. it is illegal to smoke in public or anywhere tobacco is banned. along with the legalization of pot, san francisco's launching a campaign to inform young people of potential health and legal risks of cannabis use. those include respiratory illness along with decreased motivation and memory as well as dui arrests. cannabis use in san francisco among high school students is p new details about a scheme to smuggle drugs into a san mateo county jail. this morning deputies are searching for four more suspects. five inmates and a man accused

of helping them arrested. they're accused of mailing letters lated with amphetamines. staff quickly intercepted the letters. richard wood was arrested last friday, seizing ten ounces of meth and cash. 30-year-old jose gomez was arrested last friday. yesterday he was charged with four counts of arson and one count of attempted arson. other fires nearby are still under investigation. no one was hurt in the fires. it is taking a record amount of money to battle blazes. >> cal fire estimates it has spent $699 million and is only halfway through the fiscal year, $150 more than last year. the budget is $1.8 billion for the 2017-2018 budget cycle with an emergency fund of $424 million.

>> it's really hard to tell what type of fire season it will be. mother nature can throw us wild cards. we're forecasting whether or not the fire season ahead of us and the fire risk ahead of us and to make sure we're forecasting budget needs as well. >> cal fire does receive additional help from cities and counties not only within california but also from other california but also from other states. a brush fire in southern california, this morning firefighters fully contained the fire in l.a. neighborhood. the fire broke out last night threatening several homes. we were tracking not only chilly temperatures but fog in the north bay. dense in spots. a temperature of 44 degrees.

case in texas. >> using forensic evidence to crack a mystery. marcus moore has the story. >> reporter: investigators say a cigarette butt helped them crack a cold case. at the time investigators had evidence from the gruesome crime scene, the sketch of a possible suspect and dna. for more than a year no arrest. that was tested for something called a familial match. markers similar to someone already in jail for another crime. investigators say there was a hit on an inmate convicted of sexual assault. that inmate's brother would become the prime suspect in the murder. >> he was identified as a person >> he was identified as a person of interest in the case. >> reporter: in texas a major mark in a case that so far has remained unsolved.

a lane of traffic. >> sue, thank you. a huge police presence in san jose this morning. >> happening near sunset avenue and east san antonio street where matt keller is right now. matt? >> reporter: good morning, natasha and jessica. this investigation is still going strong about five and a half hours after the call came in. a major scene here. an emergency call just before midnight. east san antonio and sunset avenue are taped off. this is close to our lady of guadeloupe church not allowing anyone in or out here. the crime scene unit is here. san jose police homicide unit is here to help with documenting the crime scene. we're still waiting for a lieutenant to come over to talk with us about what exactly happened. we have contacted the public information officer for the san jose police department but we have yet to hear back. as soon as we hear something about the investigation we'll let you know. reporting live, matt keller, abc

7 news. >> we'll continue checking in with matt throughout the morning. this morning here at the live desk still following this story out of new york, a natural gas line may be to blame for the fire that killed at least 12 in a new york apartment building. eight adults, four children died. all of the children were little girls. a baby in the bathtub with her mother. more details. >> reporter: the five-alarm fire broke out just before 7:00 p.m. evening in the bronx. >> fire in a multiple dwelling on multiple floors. >> reporter: the flames quickly spread to upper floors fueled by gusting winds. the fire department arrived in minutes. eventually more than 160 firefighters were on the scene performing cpr on victims as they were pulled from the inferno. the fire was brought under control just after 9:00 p.m. but

not before claiming at least a dozen lives. the youngest victim just 1 year old. the oldest over 50. three of the victims members of the same family. >> this is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city in at least a quarter century based on the information we have now this will rank as one of the worst losses of life to a fire in many years. >> reporter: mayor bill de blasio praised the fire department for their quick response. >> at least 12 people were rescued and will survive. >> reporter: the scope of the tragedy struck even veterans. >> in a department that's no stranger to tragedy, we're shocked by this loss. >> reporter: investigators are on the scene but fire officials say it's too early to determine the cause of the fire. 5:33 now. chp is expected to release information about the man

accused in a christmas eve crash that killed an officer. officer andrew camilleri died in hayward. he and his partner had pulled over when their suv was hit behind from a car. investigators say the suspect was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. he will face several felony charges. and the man suspected of plotting a christmas day terror attack will stay in jail. everitt jameson appeared in federal court in fresno yesterday. the defense argued he should be released under heavy supervision. the judge said he is a danger to society. his next court date is january 5th. the night the oldest bridge burned down, january 3, 1998, on the dumbarton rail bridge which connected menlo park to newark. the menlo park district shared these photos with us of the

a clear vantage point over san francisco. in the north bay some patchy, dense fog. quickly gets out of here by midday and in the afternoon it's sunshine and 60s. natasha? if you're having trouble with your memory perhaps go for a run. the american academy of neurology issued some new guidelines suggesting exercise can help. it says working out benefits people in their 60s and beyond. studies found exercising at least twice a week can improve memory. this is the first time such a recommendation has been issued. the moto-cross track is set to close for good next week. there may be some hope. 408 mx is the only track in san jose and the owner says he can't afford to keep it running because of the rent and insurance requirements that are going up. management says there's a big demand for the land and there is a new investor interested. >> sure we'll talk to them. we have so much demand for the land, we had begun the process of figuring out how best to use

30s in our coldest spots. good morning. we're at 35 in san ramone. half moon bay at 39 degrees. you're holding in the 40s this early morning hour. later on today we're all going into the 60s. a lot of sunshine, mild temperatures. it is a spare the air day with the poorest air quality in the north bay. it's illegal to burn wood in the next 24 hours. drew, thank you. two people who may have missed the bus were able to hitch a ride anyway. video shows the two standing on the back of a staten island bus. the man who took the video says they were on the bus only for a few minutes until the bus stopped at its next location. transportation officials say this is dangerous and it's also illegal. anyone who sees someone doing this should notify the bus driver or call police. there are over 70 cities named concord in the united states. our local concord not the only one. >> historian rob morris is on a
