live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> streets blocked off in the south bay overnight after a deadly stabbing. now we're learning the victim was a teenage boy. thank you for joining us, i'm natasha zouves. kristen sze is off today. neighbors are concerned. this is the second homicide in 27 hours in that particular neighborhood of san jose. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is tracking the investigation. he's live at the san jose police department. matt? >> reporter: natasha, a troubling trend for the end of the year in san jose. police are investigating two homicides in just two days and so far, no arrests. the first 911 call came in just before midnight for a fight in the middle of south sunset

avenue near east san antonio street in san jose. when officers arrived, a group ran off. lying on the ground, a male, bleeding from at least one stab wound. an officer guy him cpr. the victim was taken to valley medical center where he died a short time later. the crime scene was right around the corner from our lady of guadeloupe church. >> our young people, they need hlp now, they need to pray for them. >> it's scary. we're scared because it happened now, maybe it will happen more. >> reporter: unfortunately, it has happened more. this latest homicide is the second in 27 hours here in the east san jose neighborhood. on wednesday night, a little more than a mile away, a male was shot and killed on vanwinkle lane. in both cases no suspects were arrested. >> we don't work in the nights, only in the daytime because no reason. >> yeah, the danger. >> no reason. it's dangerous. >> reporter: this morning's homicide was the 34th of the year.

all of last year, there were 47 homicides in san jose. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. happening today, the chp is expected to release information about the man accused in a christmas eve crash that killed an officer. the officer died after he was hit on the side of 880 in hayward. he and his partner pulled over when their suv was hit from behind by a car. investigators say the suspect was under the influence of both drugs and coalcohol and will be facing several felony charges. there's major developments this midday in the investigation into what sparked a terrible apartment building fire in new york city. 12 people are dead including young children. abc 7 news anchor jessica castro has the jessica? >> natasha, investigators think the deadly fire was started by a child playing with a stove. it's the worst fire new york city has seen in 25 years. an apartment fire in the bronx neighborhood claimed 12 lives, including a 1-year-old child. initially, a gas leak was

thought to be the cause, but now investigators say it was all sparked by a 3 1/2-year-old child playing with the burners on a stove. >> the mother was not aware of i, was alerted by the young man screaming. she exited her apartment with these -- her 2-year-old and 3-year-old, and left the door open. so this fire quickly spread up the stairs. >> reporter: the stairwell then acted like a chimney and spread the flames in minutes. >> to the window -- >> came out through the window? >> yeah, there was smoke everywhere. >> reporter: the details are horrific. people ran for their lives from the five-story building thursday night. parents screaming for help, children crying. >> burned. burned. little kids. the structure burned. it was crazy. >> reporter: at least three of the dead are from the same family. in one apartment, a mother was found in a bathtub clutching her baby, both dead. firefighters are now reminding

everyone across the country that if a fire starts in your apartment building, you must remember to close the door behind you as you run away. why is closing the door to your parent so critical? as people do start to evacuate, windows, hallways are open, and flames seek the air so it's a disastrous combination and it fuels the fire. more than 170 firefighters had to be called in. meanwhile, this midday, four people are still fighting for their lives. i'm jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> jessica, just heartbreaking. thank you for these the man suspected of plotting a christmasdy terror attack at pier 39 will stay in jail. jameson appeared in federal court in fressno yesterday. the defense argued he should be release the because he back tracked on the attack. the judge decided to keep jameson in custody saying he's a da danger to society. his next court date is january

5th. it's a tradition for many in the bay area, the christmas holiday and new year's eve crab. a shortage means the sweet meat from the depths of the sea is coming at a sky-high price or is impossible to find at all. amy hollyfield is tracking this. amy, people sure are passionate about their crab. >> reporter: it's been tough to find this week, natasha, but it sounds like santa claus has been doing late deliveries of crab today. we have found some in grocery stores, just landed there this morning but you're going to pay a pretty penny for it. you are looking at the first shipment of crab diablo foods has been able to get this week. look fast. they won't be here for long. the manager here expects them to all be gone by this afternoon. >> just got 200 pounds in today. that's all they had left. so -- >> reporter: okay. how much is it selling for? >> $17.99 a pound. very expensive. >> reporter: crabs were missing from many holiday dinner tables this year. that will continue into the new year. fishermen say it has been a tough season.

>> there's some crab going to be for new year's, just not as much because we're on a down cycle this year, but two or three years from now, we'll be on the up cycle and that's just the way the ocean works. >> reporter: the season started strong, but then the crabs coming in were too small. and the season took a turn for the worse. >> right now, they're out. like i said, up north they're not opening up the season until the 21st of january because the crabs aren't ready yet. >> reporter: that makes it tough for those on the front lines who have to tell customers they will have to change their menu. >> tough. you're destroying people's dinners for thanksgiving and for christmas and for new year's. but it's out of our control. you know, we can only sell what we can get. >> reporter: even at $17.99 a pound, there are buyers. herb foster is here at diablo to get some for dinner tonight. >> yeah, because my wife said get a crab, so, you know, what am i going to do, right? >> reporter: i just checked with whole foods down the street.

when they will be ready for commuters. uber is about to limit founder travis kalinik's power in a major way. one requirement following uber's investment deal with softbank is the ride hailing company drastically reduce kalanick's authority. according to "business insider" he seems okay with it especially because softbank could have put its influence behind uber's competitor, lyft, instead. investors pressured him to resign after scandals rocked the company. he still remains a major member of the board of directors. celebrations are happening across the bay area. it's not because of the new year. it's because of what is happening come new year's. and that is the commercial adult sale of recreational marijuana. abc 7 news was at harbor side in oakland. it there was a long line of people. many of them were stocking up before new taxes take effect. >> they're not insignificant, so the price of cannabis could go up as much as 30%, 40% on certain products and that's, i think, going to be a shock to

folks. >> customers must be at least 21 and have a valid i.d. only shops with local and state licenses can sell recreational cannab cannabis. remember, it is still illegal to smoke marijuana in public or anywhere tobacco is banned. still ahead the reason the state supreme court may cut pensions for california public employees. plus president trump's new target this morning and the financial toll it's taking.

target, amazon. he tweeted this morning, "why's the united states post office which is losing many billions of dollars a year while charging amazon and others so little to deliver their packages, making amazon richer and the post office dumber and poorer." the u.s. postal service does not se tax dollars for operating expenses and running in a deficit. it allows the e-commerce company to pay less to deliver packages than it would pay other delivery services. since the president's tweet, amazon's stock dropped more than half a percent. and now to today's morning money report. today is the last day to pay your property tax before the new republican tax plan launches on january 1st. abc 7 news was at the contra costa county tax office yesterday. workers saline y lines have bee long. taxpayers are doing what they can now to maximize their deductions. the new tax bill limits deductions to $10,000 for state and local taxes. the state supreme court may decide to cut pensions for california public employees 37

cases now before the justices addressed the ballooning costs of pensions and the need to limit them. the state's two largest public pension systems are severely underfunded. calpers and the california state teachers' retirement system has two-thirds of the assets they would need to pay the benefits they owe. the sf marin food bank needs to raise $2 million in the next few days to reach its year-end goal. abc 7 news was in san francisco's dog patch neighborhood where food bank staff and volunteers are asking for donations to help feed the 225,000 people it serves every single year. the food bank raises about 25% of that money during the month of december, but this year, donations are coming up short. >> hunger never takes a break, and we know that there's about 25% of the people living in our community are wondering where their next meal could be coming from so the holiday season is a really important time for people to celebrate with family and friends, and also keep in mind neighbors who are in need and who are hungry. >> and this is something to keep

poor air quality in the north bay, the poor air quality will be expanding across many regions along the coast and inland. take it easy out there few you have respiratory issues. temperature wise, we're warming into the 50s in some spots. 63, though, right now, half moon bay. 52 oakland. 55 that current number in san jose. further warming dater on today going well into the 60s in most spots. 62 if san francisco 60 in oak labdlaland. 64 in santo rosa. 65 the high in concord. overnight tonight we'll cool off once again. fairfield the freezing mark overnight into saturday morning. 44 in antioch. 41? santa rosa. 42 in san francisco. 40 the low in oakland. let's bring back the storm impact scale, talk about the return of moisture into our forecast. it won't come new year's eve or new year's day, but next tuesday, that's when we're tracking a rainy pattern developing, going to be light in nature. ranks a 1 on our storm impact scale. most areas more than a quarter of an inch of rain and it will be breezy at times. let's time this out for you.
