hours. the intern police chief said this started when a woman drove to the bank to get money outside the atm. she immediately called officers quickly surrounded the area. police say the suspect was pacing, acting very agitated and refusing to cooperate. some of those officers recognized the suspect. in fact they've known him since he was a child and asked him repeatedly to drop his gun. after a few minutes the suspect instead took a combative stance. >> he stopped, pointed it at the officers and shot in the office officers direction. the officers immediately returned fire. >> it escalated very quickly. qk >> reporter: none of the officers were injured. police say the suspect was a

before it caught fire. the sheriff, chp are investigating. officer andrew cam larry lost his life christmas eve when his patrol car was hit by a suspected drunk driver. nbc's coronal bernard was at att today's memorial. >> reporter: hundreds of law enforcement officers some as far away as colorado and texas came to honor a chp officer, a man who loved his job. >> whether its to help a motorist, issue a citation to a speeding driver. >> reporter: he died in the line of duty christmas eve in hayward

concerned. they say ringing in 2018 with a fireworks show isn't exactly the best for air that's already polluted in the bay area. >> air quality is currently unhealthy in many parts of the bay area right recollec fireworks aren't going to improve the situation. the particles from these exploding fireworks linger in the air for quite some time, especially with the conditions we have right now, calm conditions, cool temperatures, that means that air pollution is just lingering in the air. >> reporter: bay area air district spokesman tom flanagan says people sensitive to poor air quality should be mindful of the bad air. >> i do encourage in these conditions for people to carry their inhalers with them if they know they have a respiratory condition. also consider not going to where the fireworks are being launched. >> we'll begin the actual

loading of the product this afternoon and connected and ready to shoot. >> reporter: those fireworks will be launched from a barge 1,000 feet offshore from pier 14. unlike the foggy fourth of july, fire crews are looking forward to seeing their hard work light up the sky for 2018. in the meantime bay area transit agencies will help people celebrate new year's eve safely. bart will run skpru chains until 3:00 in the morning. some stations will be skipped because of overcrowding, so make sure to plan ahead. they're all offering free rides on new year's eve. they'll begin at 8:00 p.m. and last until the early hours of the morning. celebrate 2018 with abc 7 and dick clark's new year's eve fest. then you can join us for abc 7

tonight a california man is under arrest after a swatting prank call led to a deadly police shooting. abc reporter has the chilling 911 calls and new information about the suspect. >> reporter: in custody accused of placing a fake 911 call. >> therapy arguing and i shot him in the head and he's not breathing. >> reporter: in a labored voice the prankster was telling 911 he shot his father and was holding his family hostage. but when officers arrived a man identifieds by his family as andrew finch appeared at the screen door. >> show your hands. walk this way. >> reporter: with body cameras rolling the officers instructed the 28-year-old to raise his

hands and walk towards them. at first they say he complied but then moved his hands to his waist. an officer then opening fire. >> he feared the male had just pulled a weapon from his wabd. >> reporter: finch's family watched in horror. >> my granddaughter who witnessed the shooting and had to step over her dying uncle's body. >> reporter: wichita police saying the man was unarmed and did not make that call. he called in a bomb threat to abc station in 2015 which led to an evacation of the los angeles station. he received a two-year sentence and was released earlier this year according to the fbi who assisted local authorities in locating him yesterday. abc news, new york. >> what a wild story. well, just ahead good luck if you're playing the power ball tonight. you're going to need all the luck you can get because of the recent changes that also made the megaball harder to win.

firefighters a making great progress on the thomas fire, but it'll still take three more weeks to get full containment. tonight it's at 92%. it's destroyed more than a thousand structures. because of the progress, though, firefighters are spending less time on the fire line and more time repairing damage they caused while traying to contain the fire. the flames could still flare-up again because of high temperatures and low humidity. well, tonight someone could claim a $384 million power ball jackpot with another enormous drawing on tuesday. you do have until exactly 11:59. tuesday's will be worth $343 million of nobody won last night's drawing. it is rare, though, for both games jackpots to be so enormous. we could be seeing that more

often because megabillions made it harder to win with a larger range of numbers. power ball did that a few years ago. tracking a quiet finish to the year tomorrow, but rain will enter the forecast in the next couple of days. we still have a fair amount of cloud cover overhead. unfortunately, not any moisture tonight or the next 24 hours. the picture outside, tonight in san francisco, a rather quiet and cool night. this time tomorrow, though, it's going to be hustling and bustling with folks getting their spots preparing to watch the fireworks. air quality not only an issue today but continuing tomorrow especially along the north bay along the coast and inland. so another spare the air day is in effect on sunday. temperatures wise our coolest spots have dipped back into the 40s this hour. elsewhere we're kind of holding in the mid and low 50s in this

early evening. it will be a chilly night, once again, away from the coast. the next 12 hours typically cool in our valleys like santa rosa, conquered, dodd, dropping. matchy fog in spots first thing in the morning on your sunday. by the afternoon we'll see a blend of sun and clouds out there. you'll also notice that haze in the atmosphere once again thanks to the air quality. about 59 in palo alto, 62 in conquered and santa rosa up to a cool 59 degrees. then we get you into the later hours of new year's eve. if you are going to be out and about, it's dry, but have your jackets. temperatures dipping into the mid-40s and 50s around the bay. and then ring in the new year with a blend of star and clouds out there. and 2:00 in the morning chilly with spots inland going to the upper 30s.

look at these numbers. the past 30 days most spots have barely even squeaked out an inch of moisture. we're really on our way to the fourth driest december in recorded history. but we are tracking showers. the storm impact scale we use exclusively here otabc 7 to rank your storms. the showers moving in wednesday are light in nature. it's not a lot of rainfall. it is a good indication that our pattern is changing for the weather. by noon the showers first developing along the coast, and then we do expect into the afternoon and evening the showers to become a little bit more widespread, but it's quick moving system. so in the early morning hours on thursday this storm is going to break up and part the region.
