capital san jose when it crashed around 12:15 local time. from above, you can see the scorched woods where it came down. the plane's colorful tail some of the only recognizable debris. costa rica's former president tweeting that her cousin was the pilot. investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. marci gonzalez, santa monica, california. authorities in colorado have identified the man who opened fire on police in an apartment complex in an affluent denver suburb. they say matthew riehl was a veteran who served in iraq and ranted against so-called dirty cops on social media. abc's clayton sandell has more. >> reporter: it began as a noise complaint that quickly became an ambush. deputies arrived at highlands

ranch, colorado for a dispute between a man and his male roommate. at 5:55 a.m., the suspect, armed with a rifle, suddenly opens fire. >> i need s.w.a.t. right now. i need medical. >> reporter: four deputies and one police officer are shot. >> it was like an exchange of gunfire and pop pop, and then pop pop pop pop. and then returned fire. >> reporter: two neighbors are also hit. all of the officers managed to retreat outside except for one, 29-year-old douglas county deputy zachary parish. >> we have one deputy down inside the apartment. i am not getting anything from him. all of us have been hit at least once. >> all of them were shot very, very quickly, and they all went down almost within seconds of each other. so it was more of an ambush-type of attack on our officers.

>> reporter: over the next hour and a half, the suspect fires more than a hundred times. >> we need to get our officer out you of there. >> reporter: gunfire even heard over the radio. >> several rounds firing. >> reporter: at around 7:30 officers entered the apartment confronting and killing the suspect in a final shootout. deputy parish does not survive. he was married, the father of two children. >> we are deeply saddened by the loss of zachary. when i sat with his wife and held her hands i could see in her eyes her life was over. >> reporter: the other officers all now in stable condition. the police say they had dealt with this suspect before and had been here on calls in the past but they say he did not have a criminal record. clayton sandell, highlands ranch, colorado. and a man is under arrest after stashing weapons and ammo in a hotel room just hours before new year's eve celebrations. russell told police he was at the hyatt regency and had the weapons which included an ar-15 so they would not get stolen. police do not believe he intended to use those weapons,

celebrations later, but first breaking details on a tragedy. ten americans were on a charter plane that crashed in costa rica, killing everyone on board. >> plane went down sunday afternoon moments after taking off. marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: in costa rica, 12 people are dead, ten of them americans, five of them reportedly members of the same family. after a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff. >> our left hand turn and nosedive straight into the ground. >> reporter: dawn wolf and her family vacationing from utah watching in horror. >> everybody screaming and yelling. >> reporter: her husband rushing toward the flaming wreckage. >> people were yelling and people were running up the hill with fire extinguishers.

>> reporter: costa rican officials say it headed for the capital san jose when it crashed around 12:15 local time. from above, you can see the scorched woods where it came down. the plane's colorful tail some of the only recognizable debris. costa rica's former president tweeting that her cousin was the pilot. investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. marci gonzalez, santa monica, california. authorities in colorado have identified the man who opened fire on police in an apartment complex in an affluent denver suburb. they say matthew riehl was a veteran who served in iraq and ranted against so-called dirty cops on social media. abc's clayton sandell has more. >> reporter: it began as a noise complaint that quickly became an ambush.

deputies arrived at highlands ranch, colorado for a dispute between a man and his male roommate. at 5:55 a.m., the suspect, armed with a rifle, suddenly opens fire. >> i need s.w.a.t. right now. i need medical. >> reporter: four deputies and one police officer are shot. >> it was like an exchange of gunfire and pop pop, and then pop pop pop pop. and then returned fire. >> reporter: two neighbors are also hit. all of the officers managed to retreat outside except for one, 29-year-old douglas county deputy zachary parish. >> we have one deputy down inside the apartment. i am not getting anything from him. all of us have been hit at least once. >> all of them were shot very, very quickly, and they all went down almost within seconds of each other. so it was more of an ambush-type of attack on our officers. >> reporter: over the next hour and a half, the suspect fires more than a hundred times. >> we need to get our officer out you of there.

weapons which included an ar-15 so they would not get stolen. police do not believe he intended to use those weapons, but they did charge him with trespassing and assaulting a police officer. iran is preparing for another day of protests. they rally against high prices, unemployment and corruption. the white house has voiced support for the demonstrators. iranian president rouhani said they had a right to protest but warned against violence. two protesters were killed over the weekend and iran has blocked access to instagram and a popular messaging app used by activists. north korea's kim jong un is ringing in the new year with a message for the u.s. his country's nuclear forces are a reality, not a threat. he also warned that the nuclear button is always on his desk. president trump rang in the new year with family and friends at his mar-a-lago resort. hours earlier, he put up this message on twitter. as our country rapidly grows stronger and smarter, i want to
