of tonight's sunset and tomorrow those clouds will bring us rein he -- rain in the bay area. >> this is pretty widespread. >> yeah, and it will become widespread as we go later into our wednesday. it's been several weeks since we've seen rain, and it is returning to the region. you do notice there are a few returns many this is not reaching the ground yet. it's so dry near the surface that this is all evaporating, but it will reach the ground in the next 24 hours. when do we expect the drops to finally reach the surface? likely midday on thursday. that's when you will see the rain arrive. and once it arrives it will be sticking around for a couple days, not only rain but the chance of a thunderstorm. much of the bay area has been placed under an isolated chance of a thundershower popping up.

this man. the victim works there and was inside a classroom when the attack happened about 6:30 a.m. san jose police released the sur veilance video of the suspect. there will be extra police in the area and at the school as a result of the attack. and fremont police were involved in a standoff with a 28 year old man suspected of attacking his father. police arrived at the victim's home at about 10:45. he told police his son had injured him and took off in his car on mill creek road. police caught up with him about 2:00 p.m. he was hiding in the bushes. the suspect gave himself up after negotiations. an armed robbery of an ups driver at the store's loading dock. it happened at the villa jet corda madera shopping melanie woodrow is on the story.

>> reporter: you can see dozens of nordstrom employees standing outside the department store. they evacuated employees from the nordstrom around 10:00 a.m. after an armed robbery at the loading dock. a suspect robbed an ups driver. a nordstrom employee was pistol whipped, according to police. >> it does appear there were nordstrom employees on the loading dock. >> reporter: the suspect got away in a white van. police say someone else was driving. police do not have a description of the armed suspect or the get away driver. >> it does appear that the suspect was wearing some sort of mask. >> reporter: investigators are hopeful surveillance video will help them identify the suspects and the vehicle they left in. >> it's very unusual, very unusual for us. >> reporter: law enforcement officials from multiple agencies responded. an ups spokesperson said ups is working with law enforcement and

is thankful the ups driver is safe. they evacuated the department store out of abundance of caution. >> right now we have no reason for anyone to be afraid for their safety. >> reporter: no shots were fired and police say the suspect never entered the store. police have not said what if anything the suspect got away with. in corda madera, abc 7 news. a hayward resident faces charges of murder and driving while drunk and high following a crash that killed a highway patrol officer on christmas eve. we're taking a look at the picture of the suspect, mohammad ali. they believe he was driving 120 miles per hour. the impact killed officer camilleri. they were looking for impaired drivers, trying to prevent tragedies for other families. >> drinking and driving is socially unacceptable. smoking marijuana and driving is as unacceptable.

>> if you are going to drink, smoke or take drugs that affect your ability to drive, arrange for a designated driver. >> ali will be booked into jail once he's released from the hospital. to an update on a high-profile murder case along the peninsula. it made national headlines when the key defendant put up $65 million in cash and property to post bail. lee, along with her boyfriend and another are accused of killing keith green, the father of lee's children. we are joined from redwood city with today's update on the case. so dramatic, vic. >> reporter: there are some new developments in this sensational murder case here on the peninsula. this hearing today here at the hall of justice was supposed to be a pretrial hearing. instead, they set a new trial date, which had been january 16th. and tiffany lee's attorney tells us he plans to file a motion to

separate his client from another defendant who plans to sing for the prosecution. >> we're set for trial, tentatively on march 12. >> reporter: tiffany lee's attorney jeff carr and others representing the defendants, her boyfriend and her bodyguard and trainer got the judge to agree on the new trial date. all three are charged with killing keith green, tiffany lee's ex-boyfriend and father of their two young children. she's the only one out on bail, having posted property and cash worth nearly $70 million. adelea is asking the district attorney to let him plead to less serious charges in exchange for testimony that would incriminate lee and bayat. that's what he said in this exclusive interview. >> are you going to take the deal and agree to testify against tiffany. >> yes, yes, yes. >> reporter: he says all he did

was dispose of the body in a rural field in sonoma county after the other two murdered green in lee's hills hills hills mansion. attorney carr says he is lying. >> if you've been able to see the evidence we've been able to see about what they have against mr. adella, the average person would say it's much more likely he did the killing than testify any lee. >> reporter: the deputy district attorney says adella has asked for a deal. >> he has brought that to us. i will just say at this time it is still, we are, still have charges 187 against all three defendants. >> reporter: 187 is a charge for murder. the two men facing charges for the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland delayed entering pleas in court today. they both face 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter.

one for every victim. both suspects remain in jail. police believe they were negligent for several reasons, including storing chemicals inside the oakland warehouse. but defense attorneys claim it was someone else's fault. >> there's potential arson in this case. here's potential that the fire started because of pg&e negligence with respect to a transformer next door, not even with, you know, in my client's premises. >> they will return to court to enter pleas next month. their trial could begin in the summer. recreational pot is not for everyone. >> that's true. coming up, a bay area city is launching a cautionary campaign about cannabis. i'm michael finney with bathroom remodelling advice. 7 on your side is coming up.

moms don't take sick days... moms take nyquil severe. the nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, fever, best sleep with a cold, medicine. although it is still illegal for teenagers to buy or smoke recreational marijuana in california, the recreational use law has prompted so's health department to launch a social media campaign to inform young people about the risks of cannabis. abc 7 news reporter lyanne melendez has the story. >> reporter: scientific studies have suggested that young people should wait until their mid-20s to start using marijuana. during this period of neurodevelopment, a younger brain is more sensitive to damage from drug exposure. >> you're more likely to have problems with memory, attention, affecting your school. >> reporter: the risks are higher for those with a family history of mental illness.

>> they're more likely to develop psychosis or schizophrenia. >> reporter: it's okay to have edblings, it won't hit me that hard, fact or fiction? those began appearing on social media. those ads also highlight the fact that youth consumption of cannabis here in san francisco is lower than the national average. a 2015 study on cannabis found that 71% of all of san francisco high school students reported never trying marijuana. compared to 59% nationwide. the san francisco unified school district has been tracking its students for years. from 2009 to 2015, 83% of high school students said they were not users of cannabis, 93% of middle school students were not either. >> we want kids to know that they have good company in making a choice not to use these substances. >> reporter: the health department also wants teens to know that cannabis is still

illegal if you're under 21. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> now while we're on the topic, there is a downer clouding the high over legalization of recreational marijuana in california. they expect a surge of business but still face a dilemma when it comes to the safety of their money. we are joined with more on this. >> perhaps now that california, the most populace state in the nation is in the game, banks, credit unions and other lending institutions will be open to changes. in any case, the state and local governments are trying to figure out how to safely handle these massive amounts of money. marijuana is, for the most part, an all-cash business. and where there have been robberies before with medical pot, recreational sales will boom to an expected $7 billion. possibly attracting more violent

crimes. henry is an attorney with the cannabis industry, pushing to open the doors of financial institutions t institutions to his clients. >> somebody is going to get hurt. people may be killed. it's something that shouldn't have to happen for people to, for people that control the banking industry and congress to realize that this is something that needs to be addressed. >> reporter: marijuana remains illegal in the eyes of the feds, which makes banks reluctant to open accounts. having no place to stash cash is not just a concern about crime. the attorney tells us people he represents are asking for help to come in from the cold. >> we want to buy houses. we want to send our kids to school. we need to have checking to be able to do that. >> reporter: strategies are being discussed on both the state and local levels. california treasurer john chung recently convened a working group that suggested among other ideas, opening up a state-backed

financial institution. san francisco supervisor, maleah cohen has bank. >> how do they bank and carry out their transactions in a safe, manageable, procedure. so these are all very important questions that the municipal bank is looking to provide answers to. >> reporter: and supervisor cohen will hold a hearing next month. by the way, the cities of oakland and berkley are also looking into the idea of a municipal bank. in the newsroom, care laolyn ty abc 7 news. we really needed the rain, and boy, is it coming. >> we do need it badly. drew tuma is tracking it. >> we are already several inches below normal for this time of year. live doppler 7 along with satellite, for much of the day

we've had cloud cover overhead. you do see green on the screen, but the showers are not reaching the surface quite yet. but the next 24 hours, they will certainly make their presence known. showing you market street into the financial district. this picture is dry, but fast forward 24 hours from now, we do expect drop on that lens. the storm impact scale we use here, we rank our storms from gun lig one light, five to severe. gives you an idea of what to expect. and the system arriving will linger for a few days into friday morning. light to moderate times. it could contain lightning and small hail. but it's not a soaking rain that we desperately need. we'll see about a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain once the system is all wrapped up.

temperature wise, numbers have not budged too far from where we were earlier this afternoon. upper 50s to lower 60s was our high, that's where we sit. 55 in san rafael. concord, mild for this time of the night this time of the year at 60 degrees. the next 12 hours we'll continue to see crowlouds thicken. not too chilly. no 30s on the board. we will all settle into the 40s. this is our storm system right here that will bring the rain the next 24 hours. still several hundred miles offshore, but it is moving in our direction. so let's time this out for you. future weather hour by hour, tomorrow afternoon, 12:30 around lunch time, this is when we do expect drops to be reaching the surface. very isolated in nature, but as the evening progresses we do see showers ramping up. as we get to 7:00 wednesday evening, future weather showing

you scattered showers across the region, and these pops of yellow you see, some off the coast and some inland at this hour. this is the chance of a thundershower popping up. that's likely going to happen. if it does, in the evening on wednesday. of course we'll keep tracking that as they move through. future tracker rainfall estimates, as we get you through friday once again, about a quarter to three quarters of an inch of reain is a very good estimate. could see more than that. but the majority will fall in that range. upper 50s to lower 650s t0s the of the game tomorrow afternoon. there's that chance of the thundershower. a scattered shower still in the forecast on thursday, even into friday morning, and then the system is out of here. we're dry for the weekend. download the app, you can track the weather right there in the palm of your hands.

more than 100 points. the dow added just about the same and the s&p gained 22 points. weig weight-watchers stock rose signing another deal. d.j. callan will start promoting the weight loss program. he lost about 20 pounds on weight-watchers. oprah joined the board which helped stocks rise. mcdonald's is doing another fresh beef burger test. most of their burgers are currently made with frozen beef. the fresh beef arch burger is a little smaller than a quarter pounder, just one sixth of a pound instead of one quarter. they tested them in 2016 and plan to make it the standard at most restaurants in the next few months. here's a question. have you had a good day today? the pugh research center says

some of the vans, shoes at the vans store after we're done with this, but we're also going to eat. >> reporter: still, the business insider report says 12,000 stores are expected to close in 2018. melissa harrington, abc 7 news. new at 6:00, a santa cruz man is under arrest in south dakota after a body was found in the trunk of his car. he was seen by south dakota highway patrol traveling over 100 miles per hour. he led troopers on a 45 mile chase, bailed and tried to run off. when investigators searched his car they found a woman's body in the trunk. they are labeling it a suspicious death. in a pair of tweets today, president trump criticized the palestinians for not cooperating in a long-term peace process with israel in return for u.s. aid. he says we pay hundreds of millions a year and get no respect. they don't want to renegotiate a

long peace treaty with israel. he threatened to cut off aid to palestinians. they say they would not accept a u.s. peace pan pan pan p president declared moving the u.s. embassy to jerusalem. the longest-serving republican senator is retiring. >> i look forward to spending more time with my family, especially my sweet wife elaine whose unwavering support made this possible. >> he'll leave office when his term expires at the end of the year. meantime, it's al franken's final day as a u.s. senator. last month he announced he would resign after several women accused him of sexual misconduct. he apologized for some of the accusations and denied others. minnesota's lieutenant governor will be sworn in tomorrow to replace franken. a special election will be held to fulfill the remaining term.

there's going to be snow in much of the northest. winter weather thursday morning. a strong storm will develop, bringing snow all the way from d.c. to boston. but in the wake of the storm system, check the wind chills, friday morning, 22 degrees below zero. that chilly air is not getting relieved for the folks near the great lakes. we have clouds overhead. we are tracking rain moving into the area. it lingers through friday. light to moderate showers. there's a chance we could see a thundershower pop up tomorrow evening. so the 12-hour planner on wednesday, out the door, likely not raining where you are, but have the umbrella with you as you go about your day because by noon and through the evening hours that rain moves through as scattered showers lingering into 7:00 with temperatures in the 50s. likely the evening commute
