dry tonight, wet tomorrow. we're about to see a big change in the weather. a storm is rolling in. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm dion lim in for ama daetz. thanks for joining us. well, we are looking at a dry night ahead but it will be way more active tomorrow. >> it sure will. for more on the coming storm here's abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma. drew? >> dan and dion, it's been a couple of weeks since we have seen rain across the region, but rain returns to the forecast starting tomorrow. live doppler 7 along with satellite. what we have overhead right now, still that veil of cloud cover. the storm we're tracking, the wider picture, you can see that cyclone very nicely offshore, but you can see it's still more than 500 miles away from us. so it still has some traveling to do. but it is heading in our direction. let's time this out tomorrow morning. future weather showing you 9:00 in the morning, it's not out of

the question. there could be an isolated shower popping up. however, i think much of the activity is really going to hold off until the second half of our day. future weather showing you by 4:00 in the afternoon we have rain offshore. and that's going to be pushing in overnight into thursday. but along with the showers we do have the chance of a thunderstorm. the storm prediction center has placed the entire region under the chance of a thunderstorm popping up, which could contain some lightning and also some hail. so we'll time out this storm system. we'll go hour by hour in future weather and show show you where it ranks coming up and the full accuweather forecast. in san jose people are preparing for the rain's return. abc 7 news was along coyote creek today. the area still recovering from flooding last february when water released from the anderson reservoir overflowed coyote creek. the water district says it has prepared for the upcoming wet weather. >> as soon as the storms happen our crews go out there and they inspect trash, rocks, any kind

of blockage. >> it gives me some type of confidence it won't happen again. not 100% sure. we still have to prepare just in case. >> keep in mind the water district also says anderson reservoir is currently at 26% capacity, not close to flood stage, unlike last year. you can keep track of live doppler 7 on the go anytime. just download the abc 7 accuweather app and enable those push alerts. in developing news tonight, police released surveillance video to help track down a sex assault suspect. they say the man snuck into a san jose middle school and attacked a woman. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo is on the story. >> reporter: take a good look, san jose police say this man assaulted a woman in a classroom at harker middle school. >> the video that we have, we believe that was the suspect responsible for the robbery and sexual assault. we believe he was on campus for some time before the incident occurred. >> reporter: the attack happened around 6:00 a.m., about an hour before students showed up for school. the victim called 911. when police arrived, the man was

gone. investigators say he was seen on video walking away. people who live near the school are horrified. >> 6:30 in the morning we're usually awake, but we didn't hear anything at all. it's really shocking to see something like this has happened. >> my wife usually used to take walks alone, but at night in the morning, so we try to avoid taking walks alone. >> reporter: a spokesperson for harker school said the private school is fully cooperating with authorities. a statement reads in part, "the safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff have always been paramount and we regularly review all proet dols for any additional ways to keep our community safe." police stepping up patrols in the area. >> we will have a police presence there at the campus before school, during school, and after school. >> reporter: anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call san jose police or 911 if you have immediate knowledge of his location. in san jose katie marzullo, abc 7 news. 13 people were rushed to the hospital tonight after a crash

in stockton. this video right here is of the scene of the crash. it happened early tonight on the east side of town. the chp says it was a charter bus headed for jackson rancheria casino hotel. two additional people were injured but declined being taken to the hospital. a 22-year-old hayward man is now charged with murder in the death of a highway patrol officer. officer andrew camilleri was killed christmas eve when his patrol car was rear-ended at high speed. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley has more on the man facing charges. >> reporter: muhammad ali has a wife and 4-month-old daughter in antica but he also lived with his dad in this apartment in hayward. he is accused of driving his red cadillac into a chp patrol car on christmas eve along interstate 880, killing officer andrew camilleri and injuring officer jonathan velasquez. >> he was celebrating christmas eve, like many of us do. unfortunately, for him he chose

to drink and drive and smoke and drive. >> reporter: the chp says that ali told them that on december 24th he first threatened his wife and then with alcohol and marijuana in his system he hit the road and drove from mantiica to hayward at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. the alameda county d.a. announced that ali is charged with second-degree murder and three other felonies for driving under the influence. the alameda county sheriff's department released this booking photo of ali from 2013, when charges against him for a burglary were dropped. neighbors described ali as a great guy. several were in tears as they declined to go on camera. >> when will we say enough is enough and finally reach a point where every single driver on the road realizes that he or she cannot and must not drink, smoke, take drugs, and get behind the wheel of a car? >> reporter: officer camilleri's

funeral was held this past weekend in stockton. 22-year-old mohammad ali will be transported to the santa rita jail when he's released from the hospital this week. leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. a scare at the nordstrom in corte madera forced out employees just as the store was opening. this morning sky 7 was overhead as police evacuated the store at the village at corte madera shopping center after an armed robbery of a ups driver at the nordstrom loading dock. a mall employee was pistol whipped during that robbery. no shots were fired, and police say the robber never entered the store. they evacuated nordstrom out of an abundance of caution. >> it's very unusual in corte madera. very unusual for us. this type of situation. it's not something we deal with every day. >> no kidding. the suspect was wearing a mask and got away in a white van. police say someone else was driving. prosecutors in l.a. are now considering charges against hollywood movie mogul harvey weinstein. since october of last year 80

women have come forward to publicly accuse weinstein of various sexual misdeeds spanning decades. prosecutors are examining two of the accusations that were presented by beverly hills police. weinstein has repeatedly denied criminal behavior. judges for the nation's top food awards will have new criteria when evaluating nominees. they'll now consider the chef's behavior and character. this all comes after several rom ne prominent chefs like mario batali have been accused of sexual misconduct. members of the chef awards committee sent a letter to judges this week and it says in part, "this is about taking meaningful steps forward to end a culture of silence and complicity that has allowed this behavior to proliferate. when considering the candidacy of a person or restaurant, bear in mind that award winners are held up as role models." nominees will be named in march and the awards handed out in may. moving on, if your bank account is hurting after the holidays, there are back-to-back opportunities to strike it rich with the first being tonight.

a combined $801 million up for grabs between the mega millions and powerball lotteries. it's just the second time the lotteries have hit jackpots over 300 million at the same time. no one has won the mega million since october, purk the pot to an estimated 361 million bucks. the winning numbers selected for tonight's mega millions drawing are these -- 1, 42, 47, 64, 70, and 22. so far no winners have come forward. the powerball jackpot is even larger. it's estimated at $440 million. >> lucky ticket right here. hopefully one of them win. >> the powerball drawing is tomorrow night at 8:00. good luck to that guy and to you if you bought a ticket. >> you need lots of luck, and i mean lots. just ahead, an unticketed passenger brought a flight to a stop at oakland airport today. >> yeah, but this wasn't your usual stowaway. the four-legged critter that had a crew of searchers on its tail.

an uninvited guest disrupted a flight headed from oakland to portland this morning. someone spotted a rat jumping from the jetway to inside the plane. alaska airlines quickly evacuated the entire plane. all 110 passengers were rescheduled on flights leaving tonight and tomorrow. abc 7 spoke with one passenger via skype. >> most people knew it was kind of beyond anyone's control. but very frustrating that such a small animal could mess up everybody's plans. >> no kidding. alaska says the plane is out of service while mechanics check for damage and an exterminator looks for that rat. a boat sunk in the berkeley marina today, and people there are not surprised. abc 7 news was at the marina this evening as divers worked to raise the boat. could take all night. a deckhand named the camelot -- for the boat named the "camelot" said it was in bad shape and

should have been scrapped years ago. divers believe its wooden hull likely just rotted through. "camelot's" owner has a newer boast and was just using this one for storage. pretty wild. check out this fireworks snafu in houston. someone celebrating new year's eve dropped a lit firework into the car's trunk, where there were hundreds of fireworks inside. now, most of those were ignited, as you can see and hear. they shot across the parking lot, sending some people running for cover. others, though, gathered around with their phones. a woman in the car made it out unhurt. well, new at 11:00, almost four months after the devastating north bay wildfires, a search and rescue mission continues for cats lost during the fires. hundreds of volunteers are working around the clock now to reunite those felines with their families. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is in santa rosa. >> reporter: erica whittamore is

hoping to catch a cat with some fish flavored food and a trap. she'll be out this santa rosa's burned out coffee park neighborhood all night long. >> they're aught heout here, yo alone and scared, and they need to go home. >> once i caught my first cat i was hooked. >> reporter: jennifer petrusco started pet rescue and unification all by herself. >> the goal in the beginning was just to feed the animals while everybody got collected. >> reporter: most lost dogs were found after the fire, but many cats took off running. now hundreds of volunteers have joined petrusca from napa to santa rossa looking for missing felines. and yes, finding them. >> i would say we've caught about 70 and we've probably reunited about half that. >> oh, my goodness. you're the best news since the 9th. >> reporter: the organization's facebook page is full of smiles and lots of happy reunions. >> hi, cosmo. >> reporter: but catching a cat isn't easy. first cameras are set up outside the traps to see who's stopping

satellite showing you tonight the clouds are gathering. you can see a light return near cloverdale and ukiah. i lifted our surface observations. it's not reaching the ground just yet. but rain will move in the next 24 hours. we'll take you outside on this tuesday night. a live look from our emeryville camera showing you pretty decent visibility at this hour. this time tomorrow we do expect drops to be on that lens. we bring back the storm impact scale. we use this exclusively mere at abc 7. we rank our storms from 1 light to 5 severe. gives you an idea of every storm that moves through. one moving through tomorrow evening and really lingering into friday morning, it does rank a 1. a light system on the storm impact scale. light to moderate showers at times. tomorrow evening especially there is that chance of a thunderstorm since the storm prediction center has placed the buy area under that risk. but the main takeaway from the system, it's not a soaking rain

unfortunately but we will get? beneficial rain out of it. temperaturewise out there right now, when you have overcast skies like we have, what you do get is a slow cooling process. so right now san francisco is in the upper 50s at 58. 52 in he canland, 54 in san jose, and right now napa checking in at 56 degrees. the call from accuweather the next 12 hours not too chilly. you don't see any 30s on the board overnight tonight. most spots will start out in the 30s. corner of your screen, we'll stop at 8:00 in the morning when we're in the heart of that morning commute, and right now it looks like we're just dealing with cloud cover. perhaps there could be an isolated shower along the coast but the wet weather looks to hold on until the afternoon. 4:30 in the afternoon the system really getting its act together. some light showers beginning to push on shore. but it's really by 6:00, 7:00 at night the evening commute does look wet. future weather showing you these yellows and even oranges

isolated on your screen. here's the chance that we could have a thundershower moving through the region. any thundershower that pops up could contain lightning and hail and even by 11:00 at night we're still tracking some isolated showers through the region. futuretracker rainfall with this system as we get you into friday morning you can see about a quarter to 3/4 of an inch of rain is a good estimate. where we do see a downpour set up we could see a little bit more than that, but most spots will fall into that range. so highs on your wednesday take the umbrella with you as you head out the door. you're likely not going to need it first thing in the morning but you will need it into the afternoon and the evening as that rain moves through. upper 50s to lower 60s will be your highs on your wednesday. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. there's that chance of a thundershower tomorrow evening. some on and off showers through thursday. it's not a washout. and the showers even linger into friday morning but we dry out friday night and the weekend just a xwlend of sunshine and cloud cover. meteorologist mike neca will
