in last night's $361 million megamillions drawing. that means friday's jackpot will be worth at least $418 million. tonight's powerball will be at least $440 million. those are some of your top stories this morning on this wednesday, january 3rd. from abc news, this is "world news now." the top story this half hour, the northeast is bracing for a monster snowstorm. >> it is fairly quiet right now. take a look at times square outside of window. and you can see traffic's moving fine, nothing on the ground, 16 degrees in new york in the overnight hours. it is clear, but they do expect several inches of snow in new york and beyond. the massive storm will move out of the gulf of mexico, across florida and then begin making its march all the way up the i-95 corridor there. it will bring snow and a wintry mix to the southeast coast before reaching the northeast tonight.

inches of snow through wilmington, at least a coating of snow throughout portions of georgia. the northeast, the cold eases slightly for just a moment before we are literally clocked by 12 to 24 inches of snow in portions of the northeast and 3 to 6 down towards philadelphia. ereille, kendis. >> paul, thank you. breaking overnight, president trump going head to head with kim jong un in an incendiary threat. the president tweeting, i, too, have a nuclear button. but it is a much bigger and more powerful one than his and my button works. this comes after kim jong un bragged about having a nuclear button on his desk. and missiles that could reach the united states. overnight he ordered the reopening of a communication hot line to set up talks with the south koreans about sending a delegation from the north to the winter olympics there.

the u.s. is calling on the united nations security council to hold an emergency meeting to address the deadly protests in iran. more than 20 people have been killed after a week of deadly clashes and the demonstrations are showing no signs of letting up soon. abc's terry moran with the latest. >> reporter: an iran street on fire, protesters clashing with police. banks and public buildings attacked. some of the crowds chanting revolutionary chants "down with the dictator," they cried. and now a hard-line from iran's supreme leader, who blamed enemies of iran for the protests. and a prominent judge warned some protesters could face the death penalty. president trump has strongly supported the protesters, tweeting the final of iran are finally acting against the brutal and corrupt regime. the u.s. is watching. and at the u.n. today, u.s. ambassador nikki haley echoing the president. >> we must not be silent. the people of iran are crying out for freedom. >> reporter: it's sixth straight day of these protests. hundreds arrested, at least 21 killed. the largest demonstration since 2009, but back then it was millions in the streets. now it's tens of thousands. still, the world seeing images

like this, a young woman in a cloud of tear gas, her clenched fist raised high. what sparked these protests? iranians we poke to say it's the economy, the nuclear deal many hoped would spur growth and raise their incomes. it hasn't. now they're desperate and angry. terry moran, abc news. to neighboring afghanistan now and an american service member dead. it happened during combat in eastern afghanistan. in an area known for isis activity, four other service members were also injured. two of them are listed in stable condition. the others have already returned to duty. congress returns from its holiday break today. some of president trump's top aides will meet with leaders to discuss the president's legislative priorities. they are coming back to washington with a full agenda. >> reporter: a new year comes with a new to-do list on capitol hill. at the top of president trump's wish list, infrastructure. >> we're going to get

infrastructure. infrastructure is the easiest of all. >> reporter: the president is eyeing a $200 billion package to rebuild the country's roads, bridges and airports. but that program needs buy-in from democrats. >> the democrats have no incentive with this wave building to not surf that wave and obstruct everything the president wants to do. >> reporter: the most time-sensitive of issues, striking a deal by january 19th to avert a partial government shutdown. then there are the d.r.e.a.m.ers. nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. lawmakers want to find protections for those d.r.e.a.m.ers after the president ended the daca program last year. the president's now trying to blame democrats, tweeting democrats are doing nothing for daca. just interested in politics. >> the president wants to have responsible immigration reform. he said before that he would like to include a daca resolution in that process. and we hope to be able to work with members of congress to get that done.

>> reporter: the packed legislative agenda comes as republicans look to defend their majority in the midterm elections. >> they have a whole bunch of things that need to get done, not only politically, but for the country as a whole. but the difficulty the republicans face is they're in a very bad year. >> reporter: and that majority officially narrows in the senate today. vice president mike pence will swear in two democrats. al franken's replacement, tina smith, and alabama's doug jones. that changes the makeup in the senate to 51 republicans and 49 democrats. >> that will be the case for at least the next three years. thank you. and now to a major pay equality law overseas. it is now illegal to pay men more than women in iceland. iceland is the first country in the world to legalize equal pay. it applies to companies with 25 or more employees. companies that fail to follow the law could face fines. the tiny country is looking to eliminate the wage gap by 2020. amazon says it shipped more

will be sworn in today. overseas, 48 people are dead in peru after a bus plunged off a cliff on to a rocky beach. the bus was heading to lima when a tractor-trailer slammed it on a dangerous highway that is called the devil's curve. six people survived the crash, but at least three are still missing. authorities say the collision caused the bus driver to lose control. both drivers were reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed. here at home, new york city is ramping up security with 1500 protective barriers. the city is spending about $50 million on the security bars to prevent car ramming attacks. the metal posts will be placed at the most popular areas in the city. this follows two deadly incidents involving vehicles last year. and if news about the cold, nuclear threats and terrorism don't get you down, maybe we can get you down with this one. >> chocolate may be going extinct. it's made from the cocoa plant that only grows around the equator under specific conditions. >> those conditions are
