it is 5:00 a.m. breaking news, a 4.4 earthquake centered in berkeley but a whole lot of you felt it all over the bay area. the usgs considers this a moderate quake. >> you can see it very clearly, that big spike that we're highlighting. this happened at 2:39 this morning. we have been seeing tweets of things falling off the shelves, a panel coming down. >> just small things that have fallen but nothing major, like you said, natasha. a lot of people getting rattled, not able to go back to sleep. the first time in a high-rise

building feeling the quake. it rattled my nerves. >> i can't fault people for feeling nervous this morning. >> if you felt it use th the #abc7now. >> experts saying this was ten years overdue in that area. >> at least it wasn't a major quake, exactly. a look at live doppler 7. i've overlaid earthquakes the last 24 hours, yellow. the past 12 hours in orange. the past hour in red. we've had several in the past hours from san jose but it's the big one in the middle right underneath the claremont hotel. at a depth of about eight miles and magnitude 4.4 at 2:39 this morning. you can see there is the claremont hotel right there near claremont boulevard. let me show you the shake map. this is interesting in the fact that from richmond, el cerrito,

berkeley, piedmont, alameda down to san leandro and san lorenzo and san francisco right along 80, market street, that's where the greatest amount of shaking took place. it did move through the bay and into san francisco. it's foggy and damp this morning. it will be warmer with scattered showers this afternoon. here's sue. >> we're heading outside to take a live look at walnut creek. the fog is settling in here. it's not hampering your visibility so much. traffic is moving at the limit for an eight-minute drive. green is good. your commute is looking great this morning. we do have slick roads and we still have the problem 680 on the ramp to southbound 101 with a couple of cars there. it's in the clearing phases. they were waiting for a flatbed tow truck. that is on scene. hopefully that will be cleared out of lanes. we'll check in with any b.a.r.t. delays due to the earthquake.

we do have team coverage for you that morning. >> reporter amy hollyfield live at the b.a.r.t. station where officials say do expect delays. >> reporter: hi, natasha. we've been monitoring the situation here. it's the first train that is impacted. so, for example, on this northbound side, richmond train just came through, the very first train just came through and that was about 12 minutes late. here on the southbound side heading into san francisco things have corrected themselves. it looks like the train heading into san francisco got here at 4:58. it was due at 4:57. we were told that the first trains were just going to go very slowly here on the tracks. just to make sure there was no track damage, so that's why they went through here slowly with an abundance of caution. they did check the tracks before they sent the trains out and said everything was fine. we talked to b.a.r.t. passenger who was waiting for the train about whether he felt the quake. here you go.

earthquake. the usgs said 4.7 and then not long after that they downgraded it to a 4.4. our coverage continues right now with abc 7 news reporter matt keller. >> good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. we're here at the home of the experts, the u.s. geological survey in menlo park. we do have a phone call in to them to get their perspective. how about this perspective. this is the abc 7 seismograph, and you can see exactly when that quake hit at 2:39 this morning. the u.s. geological survey says the quake's epicenter was two miles from berkeley and a preliminary depth of eight miles. this earthquake could be felt as far away as san jose and morgan hill. this video here is from santa cruz. >> a pretty good shaker. my pans were just moving, you know, just a minute ago. that was crazy. >> reporter: that's my photographer ian babcock.

this 4.4 was particularly startling. in west san jose thought it was closer or greater than a 5. noticed rumbling on the east side of the apartment that waved through to the west. reports down to san jose, all over the bay area. keep sending the tweets. use the #abc7now. the earthquake happened on the hayward fault. according to uc berkeley doctor it is overdue for an earthquake much stronger than we felt this morning. >> such a good reminder for everyone to be prepared. the emergency management agency is encouraging everyone to have an emergency kit stocked with battery operated radios and flashlights with extra batteries. a three-day supply of food and water for everyone in your family. also a manual can opener. stock your emergency kit and develop an emergency plan for your family. posted on abc7news.com. i also tweeted out a link.

let's take a look at live doppler 7. the richmond/san rafael bridge, all the way up towards san rafael. that's where we're seeing our best radar returns right now but it is humid everywhere this morning. you can see that moisture coming off the ocean that's going to keep us damp and humid with fog throughout the morning commute. drizzle if you're not getting showers and the chance of scattered showers throughout the day today. and it's a mild air mass. some areas up to ten degrees warmer than yesterday. up to the north bay, low to mid-50s just about everywhere. clear lake cooler at 49. we've got low to mid-50s for the rest of our neighborhoods. tracy at 49. and redwood city at 47 degrees right now. here is my 12-hour planner for the east bay with the best chance around 2:00. that's the best chance. it could rain at any time. that's the best chance. temperature starts at 52 at 8:00 to 59 at noon. some low 60s this afternoon

another on partrick road. and a third location on bennett lane in calistoga near the start of the tubbs fire. the investigation is not yet complete. officials stress no official cause of the fires has been identified. construction crews are working to rebuild the first home in coffey park neighborhood. the home sits on kerry lane near sumatra drive in the middle of a neighborhood where the tubbs fire destroyed more than 1,300 homes in october. hundreds of the ruined houses have been cleared away leaving behind nearly whole blocks of ash and gray dirt. contractors say the rebuild of the three-bedroom, two-bath home began saturday after the lot was cleaned of debris. a bombshell book sending ripples through washington is already number one on amazon. a new warning from consumer reports. avoid romaine lettuce for now. investigating an e. coli outbreak in romaine that's sickened at least 58 people in the u.s. and canada. one person died. one death in canada. "consumer reports" says people should stop until the cause of the outbreak is identified and the tainted product is removed from store shelves. a tale of two coasts. the national weather service says charleston, south carolina, got five inches. even the palm trees got covered. on the right the first california snowpack of the year. abc 7 news is in el dorado county yesterday. officials say the average depth 1.3 inches. that is just 3% of the average amount. amount. >> we had so much hope for 2018.

heavier fog and tracking some stronger storms for next week. in the north bay you can see from clear lake down to about penn grove and also petaluma some scattered showers dry that's going to be the case as you look at my hour-by hour forecast. some random showers elsewhere but the north bay through the evening commute has the best chance. as we head to 1:30 in the morning, here you go. moderate showers that will be with us still at 4:00 starting tomorrow's morning commute up until 9:00. then they'll taper to lighter showers as we head throughout the day to almost nothing by the time we get to friday evening. we'll get a dry sandwich for saturday and sunday. not as much sunshine as you'd like and then a 1, 2, 1. light to moderate storms next week. sue? a look at the bay bridge

they checked the tracks and found out they were okay after the earthquake but wanted the first trains to do a double-check. we've been talking to passengers who tell us they felt it. >> i was sleeping and my wife was working. she felt a tremor. she ran into the room and woke me up. >> reporter: here's some video from the safeway in san leandro where some bottles were knocked off the shelves. a little rattling happening there. people we've talked to here tell us they did not experience any damage in their homes. we haven't heard of any major damage reported. i checked in with the claremont hotel.

maintain all the storm drain system. and so every bit of help we can get is really amazing. >> i do it for me. i do it for people on the street. it makes me feel good. >> the city says only 1,200 drains adopted so far. there are plenty more available and they need the help. a shooting near a b.a.r.t. station left a man dead and another man with serious injuries. witnesses say two men were fighting over a gun at the corner of 7th and chester streets near the west oakland station yesterday. they say a b.a.r.t. officer responded after shots were fired. it's unclear who fired the deadly shot because the gun was recovered on scene. the b.a.r.t. officer involved was not hurt. 5:38. angela alioto will officially file papers for mayor of san francisco. she's running to replace mayor ed lee who passed away three weeks ago from a heart attack. she says she feels she's the most qualified person to take on the vast number of problems facing our city. this will be her third run for

mayor. her father joseph served as mayor from 1968 to 1976. women leaders in san francisco will hold a rally this afternoon in support of acting mayor london breed. they say breed is strong, capable, dedicated and deserves to serve until voters decide who will be the next mayor. the rally is at 4:00 on the steps of city hall. zoomed in live doppler 7 on the concentration of scattered light showers from vallejo to el sear ito up to petaluma, on belvedere, sausalito and around daly city and heading down to san mateo. broaden this out you can see this moisture will keep coming off the ocean all day keeping us with a chance of an isolated shower throughout the day. temperatures are mild from one to ten degrees warmer because of the air mass coming off the ocean. some of our cooler spots, 46 and 49. the rest of the peninsula in the

that's where we have problems northbound 17. apparently as many as seven or eight vehicles involved. last time we check we saw a solid red line northbound. i don't know if they've moved the cars out of the slow lane, the tow truck is on scene. we will check back. it's around a blind curve northbound 17 after the summit and it could be causing severe delays there. we'll check back on that. better news from b.a.r.t. they have finished all their track inspections after this morning's earthquakes. they say there's no delays system wide. 48 trains are running. vta is also reporting that they still had rail inspections to do but just possible delays. they're not reporting any at this time. ace trains 1 and 3 running on time. >> thank you, sue. a closer look at these cars built by students at san jose state. they're paving the road to the future. one girl lost her p

where we continue to watch the fog lifting just a little bit. visibility up to half a mile. it was down around a quarter of a mile earlier. there's dense fog thanks to the moisture left over from the rain and the moisture in the air. scattered, light showers. heavier showers, more fog tonight and tracking some stronger storms for next week. fog now thickest around concord fog now thickest around concord and santa rosa. you can see the peppers of light rain. the richmond, san rafael bridge and golden gate bridge pretty wet there and it slides down the coast to about half moon bay. from 9:00 until noon we have scattered showers. the radar returns across the north bay. random showers through 4:00. and then you can see at 7:00 more of us are getting the
