a 4.4 magnitude earthquake in berkeley. considered a moderate earthquake. >> a lot of you felt it and can see it clearly. this happened at 2:39 this morning. to reports of any damage. >> probably many of you were up early and having trouble going back to sleep. a lot of us felt it here. >> i was a little rattled for quite some time. >> it's interesting who felt it and who did no depending on the soil. hard soil, you didn't feel it as much. the market area is the area you see on the left side of your screen where the greatest intensity of shaking and it rivaled the intensity. it starts in richmond and goes through el cerrito and down to the oakland airport. that's where we had the greatest amount of shaking going on.

a lot has to do with the fact the soil is just a little looser in those areas. eight miles deep. 4.4. there have been about seven small aftershocks. right under the claremont hotel is the epicenter. my 12-hour accuweather planner for today is damp, foggy, misty. some leftover showers. isolated at noon. upper 40s to mid-50s. low to mid-60s this afternoon. hi, sue. good morning. b.a.r.t. has completed their inspection of tracks. no delays there for ba.a.r.t. up and over the altamont pass, some slow traffic there. a big headache in the santa cruz mountains with four or five cars involved in an accident northbound 17 blocking the slow lane just after the summit. in fact, southbound is slowing now as well so expect delays here.

there are at least four car blocking the lane. until further notice we are advising highway 92 until they get the accident cleared. >> thank you, sue. we do have team coverage on the earthquake. >> amy hollyfield is live. amy, we started the morning with delays. where do we stand now? >> reporter: the commute is fine. trains are running on time. the first trains this morning were delayed and that's because they were checking the tracks just to make sure there wasn't any damage from the earthquake. it turns out the tracks are fine. all of the trains are now running on time. the biggest issue we experienced is b.a.r.t. will be dealing with a lot of sleepy passengers this morning. everyone we talked to said this earthquake woke them up. >> asleep. felt like someone was kind of shaking our bed in the middle of the night.

calistoga near the start of the tubbs fire. cal fire saying the investigation is not complete. pg&e officials stressing no official cause of the fires has been identified. >> a sign of progress, construction crews working to rebuild the first home in the burned coffey park neighborhood. plus the soil. it depend on the soil whether you felt it or not. a look from usgs down to santa cruz. this is where the shaking was felt the greatest and a look at where the strongest shaking was felt, the circles you see from richmond that goes all the way down to the oakland airport and also soma south of market, out to treasure island. those were the areas it was shaking but at least the most energy was moving through the ground and that's where it was shaking the most. a quick look right under the claremont hotel at 2:39 this morning. i was almost driving right by that at the time. 12-hour accuweather planner. we have fog, leftover showers, isolated by noon. the fog will be haze. we'll have some isolated to almost no chance of rain from 4:00 to 7:00, very mild today. temperatures in the 60s, even 50s by 7:00. sue? >> all right, we're heading back to the san mateo bridge just east or before the toll plaza. reports of an accident blocking

the left lane. the rest are open. you can see traffic is getting busier here on the span. let's zoom out and take a look at our traffic map, our 3d map. you can see the long, solid red line approaching from 880 to the toll plaza. you're looking at slow traffic from 15 to 20-minute delay to the toll. now our other trouble spot is in the santa cruz mountains after the summit. this has been cleared. it was a multicar accident cleared out of the slow lane. we are seeing residual backups. about a 15-minute drive from highway 1 over to los gatos. take highway 92 until this resolves itself. a lot of people their first thought is a predictor of a larger quake, how large was it? this was on the hayward fault. we've been talking about it for so long because some experts say we're about ten years overdue frr a 7.0 or larger quake. >> the usgs has an update.

a magnitude 4.4 earthquake just south of the university of california-berkeley on the hayward fault most likely. probably hundreds of thousands of residents in the bay area felt it. it was about eight kilometers -- eight miles deep, 12 kilometers deep. the hayward fault is not unusual to host earthquakes like this. there have been three or four of this size in this area. this is an area that commonly produces these earthquakes on the hayward fault. we live in earthquake country. it sounds like not much damage has been done. that's great. it's a wake-up call literally and figuratively for all of us and reminds us to be prepared. >> what about the possibility this is a foreshock? what are the odds of that? >> that's a great question. >> looking historically at all the earthquakes that have happened in california about 5% of the time earthquakes are

followed by larger earthquakes. so there's a low probability but there is some probability that this is a foreshock to a bigger event. honestly it wouldn't be a big surprise if we had a big earthquake on the hayward fault. the last one occurred in 1868. we're about at the 150-year anniversary for the last big anniversary of the hayward fault. we know that big earthquakes on this fault happen about every 150 years. people like me, geologists and seismologists think it is probably the most likely earthquake to occur in the bay area in the next year. >> can you speak of the earthquake as widespread and a lot of people felt it? >> this earthquake we think occurred at about eight miles or 12 or 13 kilometers deep which is relatively deep for earthquakes on the hayward fault. the fact it was so deep means it was felt over a wide area. shell earthquakes are felt over

smaller areas. the energy radiates to a much broader region. a little bit unusual it was deep and the aftershocks are starting to occur will illuminate or highlight what part of the fault ruptured during the earthquake. it's interesting. it contributes to the widely felt nature of the earthquake. other than that not a lot felt. >> can you tell bus the aftershocks? >> not a whole lot. there's been one in the area since and that's shown on the map here. i imagine in the coming days we'll see more. hopefully not large, damaging earthquakes. they help us as scientists understand what happened in that main shock, the 4.4 event. >> a lot of people said this felt bigger than a 4.7 and were saying it's comparable to the napa quake but shorter.

why would they have that type of feeling, and is it just inexperience with earthquakes? >> i'm not sure about that. i live in albany. i woke up to this earthquake, and i have a little bit of history. i've lived in the bay area almost 25 years. the things i think about how long did the shaking go on, the duration, how intense was it, and then you have to think about types of materials you're on, the soil you're on. our early indications are shaking might actually have been low for an earthquake of this magnitude. if people are telling you they felt it was intense given the magnitude, i don't think they're right. it's early to make conclusions about that. >> we have this photographer who felt it in santa cruz. >> wow. >> it seems remarkable considering it was the hayward fault there and reaching into

santa cruz. >> it's been about an hour since i checked our did you feel it page. an hour after the event that happened in the middle of the night there were tens of thousands of people who contacted our did you feel it page. i encourage everyone to do that. that helps us understand the distribution of shaking around the bay area. the shaking was widespread. that's not unexpected for an earthquake of this magnitude. >> are we ready for something bigger than this? >> let me turn that around. are you ready? i would say we're doing better than we used to do. there's still lots to be done. the one piece of advice i offer people to think about the buildings in which you spend time, the schools your children go to, your office, your home, are those buildings going to withstand strong shaking? for most people the answer is, i don't know. i suggest you consult an expert. it is the older, vulnerable infrastructure that tends to do

damage in earthquakes. >> is this one fault? >> as far as we know it looks like it was on the hayward fault, the epicenter right on the hayward fault, the type of slip that occurred is one would expect in an earthquake so this is not unusual. we have these kind of events on the fault. i like to think of this as a patch. it is slowly creeping. it slowly creeps and the two sides move past each other without much in the way of earthquakes. there are patches where the creek is inhibited, rocks are rough or tightly clamped there. they slip and that produces an earthquake. and it tells us the hayward fault is indeed moving and has the potential to produce larger earthquakes. >> can you tell us what the usgs does now and how you study this

earthquake and what it can mean for the future? >> we do a lot of things. we monitor earthquakes. we do research into how earthquakes occur, why they go to certain sizes, and we do hazard assessments. we put out information about future likely shaking. new buildings are built according to information that we help develop with our partners. for this particular earthquake we had hundreds of seismic instruments in the ground mainly. we also monitor how some structures behave and they sense this earthquake and those monitoring instruments allow us to tell you about the history of earthquakes in the bay area. >> in terms of -- can you tell us ahead of time what is coming, are we advancing in that regard? >> yes, you're asking about a program we call shake alert or earthquake early warning. we're in developmental stages together with partners, with state agencies, with

universities and that shake alert project did -- was operating this morning, according to early reports there was a four-second delay after the earthquake occurred. investigations tell us the early warning algorithm we have working worked pretty well. we're not issuing public alerts at this point. we hope to begin some limited alerts some time this year and the way this early warning system works is if we have a dense network in the ground, the first to sense the shaking, they collaborate with their partners, send information to a computer that calculates the magnitude. pbecause that magnitude and location information can be transmitted very fast almost at the speed of light which is

faster than energy travels, we can provide an earthquake. once the earthquake has started, then we warn people that the earthquake energy, the shaking, is headed their way. >> does that tell us another one might be happening soon? there's no relationship? >> there are a number of answers to that question. basically we live in earthquake country so we should expect earthquakes. recently, well, with this earthquake there is a potential it's likely there will be aftershocks. there's also a small probability that there will be followed by a bigger earthquake. there's some indication earthquakes trigger earthquakes at remote distances. >> we've been listening to this news conference. we'll continue to stream this on the abc 7 news app and abc7news.com. some interesting things coming out of this hearing from keith

knudsen. a possible foreshock to a larger quake, a 5% chance historically that earthquakes are followed by more serious ones. >> i thought the most interesting thing was the time line. he says that this particular region is supposed to get a big earthquake every 150 years. the last big earthquake there, 149 years ago. so if people are waking up this morning and thinking was this the big one? it was not. is a big one on the horizon? >> very likely. >> get the earthquake preparedness kits together. we tweeted out a link. those are some great thoughts and ideas there and suggestions. we just finished off the last of our food and water because our earthquake kit was getting old so we have to restock it and start all over again. a small earthquake not getting talked about.
