powerball jackpot will be more than $500 million. these are some of our top stories on this friday, january 5th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we do say good morning. we have made it after what was a frigid week throughout much of the country. >> and more to come. >> exactly. let's start first with the storm that roared over the east coast, leaving a mess in its wake. >> the radar shows the snow has moved out, the problem is the deep freeze that's settling in now. a very long weekend of frigid conditions. >> boston was one of the hardest hit by the storm. a historic high tide kept emergency crews busy for much of the last 24 hours. our reporter from our boston station out there the has the latest. >> reporter: here in scituate,

town officials just finished doing a damage assessment here. the flooding is worse than they expected. the water just slammed in, the wind tossing chunks of sea ice onto roofs. so powerful i got knocked around earlier. we had to move to a safer location. two sea walls did either break or get cracked. but that water would have flooded in regardless, because the tides and waves were too high. and now there's an urgent effort to get the waves off the road. the national guard evacuated 40 people in the most flooded areas. they thought they could ride this out. they underestimated the storm. the worst of it might be moving out. the trees and power lines here are already weighted down by the snow and, as the temperatures continue to drop, that turns to ice and more power outages are expected. in scituate, news 5. and things came to a stand still due to the hurricane-force

winds. >> abc's elizabeth hur has about on the front lines and joins us now from long island, new york. >> reporter: good morning to you. here in riverhead, new york, it has been snowing all day. as you can see i am standing in ankle-deep snow. don't let this fool you. this is proof of how windy it has been out here. just behind me, that flag has been whipping wildly all day. and the strong wind has been blowing snow in every direction all day. according to forecasters, where we are, we could have gotten as much as 18 inches of snow, and if that's not enough, in new york city, brooklyn, bronx, and queens reported getting somewhere between 11 and 13 inches of snow. so all of the snow, combine that with the bone-chilling temperatures and once again the wind, it has been a nightmare for stay in one trying to get anywhere all day. in fact airports shut down for

most of the day. we are learning that laguardia resumed flights but jfk won't be back in business until later this morning. and the travel headaches far from over because hundreds more flights have already been canceled for today. kendis and lynda. >> thanks. today's forecast won't help matters. accuweather meteorologist justin povick joins us with the details. >> good morning to you. our major blizzard lifting off. we've had reports of a foot to a foot and a half of snow. the snow is making its move out. still lingering, blowing snow throughout northern maine, there could still be major slippery spots. we talked about the cold tor today, the combination of below normal temperatures and biting winds will make it feel well below zero. 20 to 30 degrees below zero along with reduced visibilities.

we're going to be talking about blowing and drifting snow as well. lynda, kendis? >> all right, it's going to be a long weekend indeed. president trump is stepping up his attacks on former chief strategist steve bannon as a bombshell book hits the shelves today. the president turned to twitter to blast the book as full of lies. he attacked the author's credibility and mocked steve bannon as "sloppy steve." in the tell-all book, he insults ivanka trump's intelligence and calls jared kushner's action >> i'm not going to waste my time or the country's time going through a book page by page that's full of fantasy and gossip. it's sad, pathetic. >> the president has sent a cease and desist letter to bannon, the author, michael wolff and the publisher and threatened to sue, but the book will be released sooner than expected. a proposal would open new

areas of california along the east coast to drilling. there's been no oil and gas exploration in those areas for decades. the administration claims the plan would provide jobs and billions for conservation efforts. critics say it gives coastal waters over to big oil companies. well, the attorney general being a bit of a buzz kill for millions of americans, he has created some chaos across the marijuana industry, because the attorney general has ended a policy. >> reporter: the euphoria in those lines as california became the latest state to allow the sale of recreational marijuana tempered with confusion and defiance. attorney general jeff sessions rescinding an obama-era memo. that laid out priorities for federal marijuana enforcement, writing in a memo, the move reflects congress's

determination that marijuana is a dangerous drug and that marijuana activity is a serious crime. the reaction was swift and severe in the eight states where recreational marijuana has been legalized. republican senator cory gardner on the senate floor. >> i will be putting a hold on every single nomination from the department of justice. >> reporter: in washington state. >> we will not be bullied by the trump administration or the department of justice. >> reporter: top prosecutors in washington tell abc news they can't promise more prosecutions following this memo, and the u.s. attorney in colorado effectively saying nothing is going to change. >> so marijuana stocks saw recent gains go up in smoke after the attorney general's announcement. one canadian company saw its shares plummet 10% thursday. however, california growers promise it will be business as usual. recreational marijuana came legal on monday in california. the stock market cracked another milestone.

ground snow system. and they cleaned up the confetti a lot quicker than they cleaned up the snow, clearly, because there's still a lot on the sidewalk. the storm produced hurricane-force winds, strong enough to tear down this huge metal canopy at this new jersey gas station. >> and this is boston as flooding occurred on downtown streets. eva pilgrim begins our coverage from there. >> reporter: the devastating nor'easter, a bomb cyclone unleashing its power. in massachusetts, hurricane-force wind gusts, and in situate on the coast, some of the worst flooding in recent memory. homes and businesses inundated. >> you can see just how hard these waves are crashing against this sea wall. it's crashing the water up over the roofs of these houses. >> reporter: in boston, fire trucks driving through floodwaters. first responders making water rescues. it's just afternoon here in

boston, and you can see this right here is flood waters coming out of the boston harbor. it's not even high tide yet. we've already had to move our cars twice. at one point, the water was as high as the hood of our suv. nearby, we spotted a man heading home from delivering food. what are you doing driving in this? the powerful storm dumping up to 3 inches of snow an hour in the region along with lightning and thunder. in manchester, new hampshire, this vehicle crashing into a nursing home. no one injured. anyone behind the wheel risking an accident. in new york -- >> two buses just collided here. >> reporter: police busy using their vehicles to push stranded drivers. >> the situation on the roads is dangerous. it shouldn't be underestimated. >> reporter: multiple homes burning on oak island.

the only access by boat. but with the heavy ice, firefighters forced to build ramp and use a hover craft to reach the scene. >> there you go. go, go, go, go, go. >> reporter: subfreezing temperatures turning roads to pure ice, from virginia to georgia, stranding drivers for hours. >> just slow down. slow down. >> reporter: at least six deaths now being blamed on this storm. now boston schools will be closed again tomorrow, part of the reason for that are the subzero temperatures that are on the back side of this storm. several trucks are on the road trying to get the snow off the roads. they're putting it in piles, the reason for that, they don't want this snow to freeze on the roads and become an even bigger problem tomorrow. eva pilgrim, abc news, boston. >> and eva started the day on

"gma" on a pile of salt and ended the day on a pile of snow. quite a scene there in boston. so the storm also brought travel to a stand still. more than 4,000 flights were canceled on the east coast, leaving passengers stranded at airports across the country. good news. most major airports say they'll be up and runninging again today. >> and a singapore airlines a-380, the world's largest passenger jet, was diverted away from laguardia airport touching down, instead, at stuart international airport. >> quite an unusual scene there outside of new york city. and now comes the deep freeze. accuweather meteorologist justin povick joins us. justin, good morning. >> kendis and lynda, good morning to you. the blizzard make its way away. but the majority of the snow has already occurred where we've seen a foot to even a foot and a half throughout much of new england. big concern today is the biting winds along with blowing and drifting of snow. there will be icy spots and real-feel temperatures will be well below zero. 30 below or lower. kendis, linda.

>> reporter: the president railed against bannon and the writer tweeting overnight, i authorized zero access to the white house, actually turned him down many times for author of phony book. i never spoke to him for book. full of lies, misrepresentations and sources that don't exist. look at this guy's past and watch what happens to him and "sloppy steve". >> a new nickname there. the publisher is releasing the book today ahead of schedule despite a threatened lawsuit. here's abc's arlette saenz. >> reporter: president trump and his former chief strategist, steve bannon are facing off. >> did steve bannon disgrace you, mr. president? >> he called me a great man last night so, you know, he obviously changed his tune pretty quick. >> reporter: bannon hasn't denied making explosive comments about the trump family, but on breitbart news radio he insisted to his listeners. >> nothing will ever come between us.

>> reporter: the white house says mr. trump was furious when he learned of bannon's stinging critique in a book. he's calling the trump tower meeting between jared kushner, paul manafort and donald trump jr. and a russian lawyer promising dirt on hillary clinton treasonous and unpatriotic. >> i'm not going to waste my time or the country's time going page by page talking about a book that's complete fantasy and full of tabloid gossip. >> reporter: the president's lawyers are threatening legal action against bannon. as for the president's relationship with bannon. >> i don't talk with him. >> reporter: sarah sanders says the president has spoken with bannon a few times since he left the white house. there were no regularly scheduled calls or meetings. >> let's talk about the former press secretary, sean spicer, who is questioning the accuracy of the book, saying a lot of the quotes attributed to bannon never happened. >> and he insists that melania was very supportive of the campaign. >> spicer also said that he has not struggled making the

this morning on "world news now," the northeast is frozen over. powerful winter storm is moving out, but not before leaving more than a foot of snow in some parts, and some of the worst coastal flooding boston has ever seen. images coming in. and flights nationwide impacted and now record cold is pouring in. also breaking overnight, major developments in the russia probe as the white house hits back at a potentially damaging new book. the president weighing in overnight saying he never met the writer. and new this half hour, what we're just finding out about the health scare for alex trebek. >> why the long-time host of "jeopardy" is taking a brief medical leave from the show and a message he shared with his fans.

this woman who was trapped on her rooftop. look at that scene. they used a bulldozer to get her down. floodwaters froze around her house there. just incredible images we got from the northeast overnight. >> and a lot of places, whiteout conditions completely crippled air travel, stranding passengers at airports from coast-to-coast. that includes a group of rodeo riders on their way to new york for a major competition, finding themselves stuck in dallas. >> elizabeth hur joins us with more on the chaos this storm has created. good morning. >> reporter: kendis and lynda, good morning to you. it finally stopped snowing out here, all be it, it is still windy, it is about to get real cold where it could feel like 40 degrees below zero in new england. the east coast taking a beating from mother nature. the powerful nor'easter dumping up to three inches of snow an hour in the region. some areas also hit with lightning, thunder and even flooding.

in boston, fire trucks waded through floodwaters making rescues. in new york, mail trucks and buses were slipping and sliding. driving conditions so treacherous police kept busy pushing stranded drivers. >> coming down so fast, you're not able to clear. so underneath, it's getting real icy, plus you have people out here that shouldn't be driving. >> reporter: the slick conditions also wreaking havoc at airports. >> we're not sure that we're going to be flying out of here anytime soon. >> it's a mess, that's what i think. >> reporter: frustrations running high with more than 4,000 flights canceled across the country. >> it's a nightmare. >> reporter: the hardest hit? according to this misery map from flight aware, d.c., boston and new york city where

laguardia and jfk airports first suspended then shut down for most of the day. and officials are blaming the strong wind and blowing snow for all the airport struggles. laguardia has resumed flights. jfk won't be back in business until later this morning, and already hundreds more flights have been canceled for today. >> that's creating quite a backup. there were some 26 flights, international wide-bodied flights that were diverted from jfk to dulles airport. there is an entire runway that is a parking lot for these big-bodied planes. it's going to take a while to get them out of there. >> and get it back on track. >> and now the entire country is bracing for brutal air. >> lots of single digit temperatures, and with the windchill, temperatures will feel very sub-zero. forecasters say this bitter air will last through the weekend. we'll move on to the other story we're following. there's a new report about an

alleged attempt by president trump to keep attorney general jeff sessions from recusing himself from the russia investigation. >> sources tell the "new york times" mcgann was lobbied to keep him from stepping away from the probe, but mcgann was unable to keep him from stepping away. >> as robert mueller looks into the possible obstruction, the times reports that four days before the president fired james comey, one of sessions' aides asked a congressional staffer for damaging information on comey, a claim the justice department is disputing. and the president is taking another swipe in the mean team at former adviser steve bannon. >> he says the book was full of lies, he never met the writer and referred to bannon as "sloppy steve." but the book is only benefitting, coming out today, earlier than planned. here's abc's cecelia vega. >> reporter: we asked president trump about his old friend steve bannon. >> did steve bannon betray you, mr. president? any words about mr. bannon? >> he called me a great man last night.

he obviously changed his tune pretty quick. thank you all very much. i don't talk to him. i don't talk to him. that's just a misnomer. thank you. >> reporter: in the past 24 hours, the president's former chief strategist did indeed take to the air waves, lavishing praise on his old boss multiple times. >> the president of the united states is a great man. you know i support him day in and day out. >> reporter: but damage may already be done after that new white house book "fire and furry" quoted bannon attacking the president and his children. he called donald trump jr. and jared kushner treasonous and unpatriotic. and he said of daughter ivanka trump, people suddenly realized she's dumb as a brick. and that she and her husband talked about her running for president one day. bannon scoffed at the prospect. from the white house, outrage.

>> there are numerous mistakes, but i'm not going to waste my time or the country's time going page by page talking about a book that's complete fantasy and just full of tabloid gossip. >> reporter: and the president's legal team waged war, threatening to sue bannon for libel writing legal action is imminent. they also demanded the book's publisher halt publication. the threat didn't seem to matter much. the shock waves were already felt in washington, with early excerpts like this. wolff says behind closed doors, president trump critiqued top aides, calling his son-in-law a suck-up, senior adviser kellyanne conway a cry baby and former press secretary sean spicer stupid. and it claims his advisers had concerns about his mental stability. wolff doesn't nail names, but he writes, the worry among staffers, trump's rambling and alarming repetitions have significantly increased and that his ability to stay focussed, never great, had notably

declined. press secretary sarah sanders was forced to defend the president's fitness to serve. >> it's disgraceful and laughable. if he was unfit, he probably wouldn't be sitting there. >> reporter: and another big hit here in the white house. staffers are told they can no longer take their personal cell phones into the west wing. this is a personal cell phone ban that has actually been in the works for some time. the white house says this is about security and complying with public records laws. they say this is not a reaction to all those leaks in that new book. cecelia vega, abc news, the white house. >> and the former press secretary called stupid in the book is casting the book as inaccurate. sean spicer will have much more to say this morning when he makes an appearance on "good morning america." north and south korea will meet next tuesday for their first formal talks in more than two years. representatives will get

together at the border that divides them. items already on the agenda are how to improve strained relations and cooperating on next month's winter olympics. announcement of the talks came hours after the u.s. said it's delaying annual military exercises with south korean forces until after the olympics. meantime, former vice president joe biden says he agrees with a former head of the joint chiefs who said the u.s. and north korea have never been closer to nuclear war. last night on pbs, biden accused the trump administration of making fundamental miscalculations in foreign policy. >> three lawsuits filed in southern california are placing blame for the state's largest ever wildfire. the thomas fire burned more than 440 square miles so far and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings. many of them, the majority of them homes. the lawsuits claim power company southern california edison started the blaze, either through construction activities or faulty equipment. one of the lawsuits also blames a water company for a lack of pressure that harmed firefighter efforts to contain the flames. and also in california -- from fire to ice.

a li a live look at new york's time square where all that snow will be turning to ice from now through sunday. a record-breaking deep freeze is set to take hold today, lasting through sunday, not just in new york but all along the northeast. >> we are bundled up. >> yeah. so facebook's mark zuckerberg vowed to spend 2018 protecting his users. from abuse, hate and foreign interference. >> in a new post, zuckerberg promised to focus on those issues because he said the world is, quote, anxious and divided. he also admitted facebook makes too many policy enforcement errors. last year the site found it took $100,000 in ads linked to russian internet trolls during the 2016 election. he hopes a group of experts can help solve the problems. serena williams is sitting out the upcoming australian open.
