coming up on 5:00 a.m., tracking more rain in the bay. you can see some green on our radar. >> how much are we going to get this time around? we have the answer from meteorologist mike nicco. >> not a lot. the fact it's coming in during the morning commute it will keep things interesting and wet. it will taper during the evening hours but we could have a wet evening commute also. right now i'm focused on the golden gate bridge. that's heading up to the richmond bridge. marin county getting most of the wet weather. down to the santa cruz mountains. it's all moving to the northeast. you see a few drops on the camera in san rafael. about 0.04 of an inch of rain. 12-hour day planner. showers increasing through the

morning commute. moderate at times. the showers will start decreasing at 7:00. temperatures are already in the 60s in some neighborhoods. we'll go into the low to mid-60s during the evening hours. another mild day on tap. it doesn't look like anybody is in the north bay, sue. what do you see? >> it's pretty light. it's been light all week. a little bit of excitement at the bay bridge. a couple days this week. yesterday they never did turn them on in the morning. right now it's not on and everybody is snuggled in bed enjoying the nice rain as they should be. a lot of kids are still out of school this week. i think that's the reason for the lighter than usual traffic. you're looking at a 25-minute drive from tracy up and over into livermore. getting some live pictures out of new york city, times square. there is snow on the ground. we are keeping tabs of that big winter storm back east that's brought in heavy snow, hurricane

force winds, and record flooding. it doesn't look too bad in new york city but look at this. other parts of the east even worse. jfk airport, though, in new york reopened this morning after canceling thousands of flights. meanwhile, the airport in charleston, south carolina, is closed until monday because they don't have snow or ice removal equipment. it's just a trickle down effect. amy hollyfield is joining us live from sfo. are you seeing any cancellations or delays right now? >> reporter: we are, jessica. take a look at the board. it's not all over the place. you don't see cancellation after cancellation. but here is one arriving from newark canceled. i'm told we have about, let's see, 35 cancellations this morning, and that is total, departures and arrivals. this is early. new numbers will come in. in about an hour we'll have a better day how today will shape up. this is an improvement to

yesterday where we saw 97 cancellations. jfk has reopened in new york this morning. the flights will start to recover today. this has meant a lot of people stranded here in san francisco. we met a family trying to get home to norway from hawaii. they're stuck here in san francisco until sunday. they're going to make the best of it. >> we'll check out the attractions, spend a little more time on vacation, i guess. my wife's birthday is saturday so we have to do something nice for her. >> reporter: the good news at sfo we didn't see a lot of people sleeping here and looking uncomfortable and miserable. officials say that's a good sign of the times, people are getting text message, rebooking remotely and staying off site. you need to check your flights before you come here. the good news is the situation on the east coast is improving. reporting live at sfo, amy

hollyfield, abc 7 news. thank you, amy. there is a push this morning to free a uc berkeley student. he was arrested by u.s. border patrol agents after making a wrong turn in southern california. mora is a transfer statement. he and his girlfriend were on their way home, missed a term and ended up at an checkpoint. that's when he was detained. he reportedly came to the u.s. from colombia as a child and overstayed his visa. t a spokesperson says they are looking into the matter to see if anything can be done to help. we're learning more about the e. coli outbreak linked to the death of one american. consumer reports says do not eat romaine lettuce until the source of the outbreak has been located. there isn't a brand or selby date to tell you about right now. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson has more. >> reporter: so far 17 people in 13 states diagnosed with the dangerous e. coli strain. one american has died. >> this is a particularly nasty

type of e. coli. >> reporter: dozens of others sickened in canada. health authorities identified romaine lettuce as the source of the outbreak. >> the cdc and fda are investigating, and they say they haven't nailed it down. >> reporter: for now consumer reports wants everyone to get rid of their romaine, washing is not enough. consumer reports food expert says it's the first time consumer reports has issued a warning before the fda and cdc. >> this is unusual. we've never been in this situation before where a foreign government that we share a food supply with has warned its citizens, and the u.s. government is not doing it. >> reporter: some customers had second thoughts about their salad selection. >> i'm going to put this one back, i think. >> reporter: this man was warned about buying romaine. >> got a text from my girlfriend's mom saying don't

get romaine lettuce. wasn't planning on it, but won't be eating caeser salad tonight, i guess. >> reporter: consumer reports says all other types of lettuce should be safe. in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. it's been more than 24 hours since the 4.4 earthquake rattled much of the bay area. >> such a massive response from you, from all the people who felt the jolt including people right over the epicenter. exactly where usgs says the quake hit in berkeley, claremont avenue. this brick home sits on the hillside. one of the people living in the home says the strong jolt rattled them root out of bed. >> wow. that's how it felt, like it really felt like it was right underneath my feet and i was wondering where was the epicenter. when i woke up i looked at it and it said berkeley. right here. >> felt like the earth was moving like this sideways. >> no actual damage to that old

>> let's talk about the santa cruz mountains. the summit received about a quarter of an inch of rain overnight. there may be puddles but it will be slick there. let's talk about temperatures here in the east bay and inland neighborhoods. low to mid-50s in most of our neighborhoods. 49 in livermore. a few upper 50s, about 57 to 58 degrees there. let's take a look elsewhere. mountain view, 60 degrees now. warmer than your average high. san francisco, 59. oakland, 58. santa rosa, you're about 20 degrees warmer than you should be. an hour by hour look at what will happen in san francisco. a chance of rain now all the way through about 6:00 this evening. it will taper. temperatures will hang on in the mid to upper 50s. let's go across the bay to the east bay and you can see a chance of wet weather all the way from 8:00 this morning to 8:00 this evening. down in the south bay, look at this, our chances of rain are much less as the storm will come

into the north bay more so than the south bay. you will have some scattered showers and sprinkles in temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. a little bit warmer for you. and then up in the north bay where we're having the rain already this morning, it's going to end earlier for you after the noon hour we'll start to see it tapering and you'll reach the mid to upper 50s, also. how strong is this storm going to be? let's break out the storm impact scale to give you an idea. it's just a 1 and it's for today with these waves of showers. there may be a few moderate ones. i'll show you how it affects your plants today coming up. how is the street or bridge looking? let's take a look. we do have a sheen on the roadway there. i can see in the cash lanes some standing water there. it's been wet most of the morning there. please use extra caution.

>> the city's goal is to find permanent housing within six months. this morning it's business as usual for legal marijuana dispensaries. local businesses and pot users are not intimidated by the recent announcement by the u.s. justice department. yesterday we told you that attorney general jeff sessions is going after legalized marijuana. he changed the policy that kept law enforcement away from legitimate businesses unless other laws were broke like selling pot to minors or being involved in organized crime. it is still illegal at the federal level. cannabis consumers and businesses say they're not worried. >> the feds need to let states do their own business and they take care of their federal messes. >> he could be raiding cannabis businesses. he could be seizing properties. none of those things have happened. >> the justice department has not said if this could lead to more arrests or prosecutions. no days off!

for today scattered showers out there. waves of showers. walnut creek looking drier. you had some of the heaviest rainfall in the last system, nearly three-quarters of an inch of rain. tonight showers taper, as the clouds open up the fog starts to form so watch out for that tomorrow morning and sunday morning. weather is going to be heavier with rain and breezy conditions monday and tuesday. today's temperatures run from about 57 in lakeport to 59 in santa rosa to 60 to 64 degrees. most of us are pretty close to those temperatures this morning. so it's not going to warm up a lot today. temperatures tonight cooler with 30s in the north bay valleys. the rest of us the low to upper 40s. a look at some of that rain that's been falling across the north bay. steadier. and that's going to be the case through the morning hours. you can see right through the heart of the golden gate bridge over the richmond, san rafael bridge, heading up 80 and that will go to hercules and napa. at 9:00 to noon the cold front

noon in the heart of the bay and then moderate spots will develop, also. by 7:00 you can see we start to taper, clouds open up and temperatures fall back into the 50s. so it's wet out there. let's find out if there's any issues on the commute this morning. sue? several have been cleared as you can see green is good. we're seeing a little bit of slowing out of the tracy area up to the altamont pass. an earlier stalin side the tunnel inside bore 3 pushed out of lanes and traffic looks like it's getting by there. and yet another problem this morning already on the waldo grade southbound before spencer. a car facing the wrong way very slick over the waldo this morning so be extra cautious. yesterday about four separate incidents. this has been pushed off at spencer avenue, so no delays getting through. >> thank you, sue. a big break for investigators late last night. they arrested a sexual assault suspect believed to be the man you see here. the victim, a san jose middle school employee in a classroom

before students arrived. >> reporter matt keller tracking this new development from our newsroom. good morning, matt. >> reporter: we're expected to learn more about the man's identity at a news conference later today. he was taken into custody last night, two days after the attack happened. here's surveillance video of the suspect walking around harper middle school tuesday morning. police say the suspect snuck onto the campus and sexually assaulted and robbed a school employee inside a classroom around 6:30 a.m. about an hour before kids showed up for class. our media partner "the mercury news" reports the victim is a teacher and had arrived early to prepare her classroom for the first day of school after the winter break. she called 911. when police arrived, the unanimous was gone. officers tracked him down last night. the head of harper academy middle school issued a statement about the man's arrest saying this was a senseless, heartbreaking crime, and our entire community is grieving. we are relieved this criminal has been arrested and hopeful justice will be served. police chief eddie garcia will

release additional details at a news conference today at noon. in the newsroom, matt keller, abc 7 news. happening today in san francisco a judge will rule whether to grant the suspect in the kate steinle case a new trial. this is in relation to the conviction of possessing a firearm. last month jurors found jose ines garcia zarate guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. he was found not guilty on murder and manslaughter charges. if the judge upholds the gun conviction today jose zarate will be sentenced. this morning we are tracking that massive winter storm on the east coast here from our live desk. as if the heavy snow and the hurricane force winds were not bad enough, unfortunately, those folks now dealing with record flooding this morning. in fact, floodwaters froze once hitting the street. a lot of parked cars there on the side of the streets looked more like possible sick ls. and rescuers in boston,

massachusetts, pulled more than a dozen people to safety as water surrounded their homes. >> i am fine. the house completely flooded out. propane tank flipped over. there was a small fire inside the house. >> just shocked at how quickly the water rose. >> the worst of the storm is over. in fact, that storm is now moving into southern canada but there are still freezing cold temperatures and there are a lot of flight delays and cancellation this is morning. back to you. >> all right. thank you, jessica. happening today the man accused of plotting an attack on pier 39 faces arraignment on terror charges. everitt aaron jameson is scheduled to be in a federal courtroom in fresno today. prosecutors said he planned to use homemade pipe bombs to force people into one spot and then shoot them with an assault rifle. the indictment against him says he told undercover agents he wanted to attack as a show of support for isis. he went into detail about how he planned to assemble the bombs and where he was going to put

them. jameson was discharged from the marines in 2009. -to-north bay men are in jail, one charged with burglary and sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl in her family's home. 21-year-old noah holland broke into a rohnert park hope, climbed on top of the sleeping girl in her bedroom. officers say he got into the home by finding a garage door opener in an unlocked car in the driveway. the girl fought holland off. the mother heard her screams and called 911. neighbors we talked to are stunned. >> my heart goes out to them especially the little girl. you can't even imagine. it's horrific. and i hope he gets what's coming to him because it shouldn't happen. >> holland's burglary accomplice 18-year-old ford was also arrested. police say he was not involved in the sexual assault. 5:35. with flu season bad and expected to get worse there are some new important restrictions about where people are allowed to go in the south bay.

a health officer says there have been many serious cases. some people have ended up in the icu. this season so severe that at dominican hospital visitation is restricted now. no one under 16 is allowed am patients can only have one visitor at a time. no flu-related deaths have been reported in the county so far. >> we're really concerned that as this flu spreads there will be a significant amount of mortality and deaths as a result. >> in santa clara county at least four people have died from the flu since the season began. the health department reports there have been five outbreaks in just the past week. eight in all. in southern california the first case of sexually transmitted zika virus confirmed in los angeles county. according to health officials a woman got it from her partner shortly after he traveled to mexico in november. the zika virus is most commonly transmitted by mosquitos. it's rare to happen during sex, according to health officials. they say the case is a reminder

to take cautions if you or your partner has traveled to an area with a risk of zika. it is a concern for pregnant women as it can cause birth defec defects. i want to show you the north bay especially highway 37 where we have some rain falling and some light rain around american canyon and up to napa and just across the san pablo bay from richmond, san pablo, hercules, this will be heading up to vallejo and possibly fairfield. we'll keep 80 wetter than most roads this morning. let's go to the peninsula. it's 60 in belmont right now. everybody else in the mid to upper 50s. the same temperatures just about everywhere else until you get to san ramone at 50 and livermore at 49. you're the exception. look at san jose, 58. the same thing in oakland and san rafael. you'll have to dress as warm this morning. the toll plaza, wet. all plains wet. it's not raining much if at all here. that's what you're going to find during most of the commute this

vowing to fight a controversial announcement by the trump administration, the expansion of offshore oil drilling. interior secretary ryan zinke says they will offer about 90% of the outer continental shell to new leases starting in 2019. it would be the largest lease sale ever. lease sales in california could prove difficult. the state may have blocked new drilling proposals indirectly by rejecting pipelines and other infrastructure projects. house minority leader nancy pelosi blasted the move saying the trump administration's latest assault on environmental protections will throw open the floodgates to pollution. americans from coast to coast will make their voices heard to oppose this blatant corporate giveaway. california hasn't issued a new gas lease since the 1969 santa barbara spill which remains the largest in the state's history. the hottest new book about president trump is hitting store shelves today called "fire and

9:00. you see some yellow. moderate pulses there. notice how it stalls on interstate 80. the heaviest will fall here. it stalls for a couple of hours and then by 4:00 it starts moving deeper to the east and to the south and then by 7:00 scattered. isolated at best. your rainfall totals will be most impressive nearly half an inch along the i-80 to a quarter of an inch to a couple hundredths. still keeping that dry weekend going for saturday and sunday. just watch out for the fog both mornings. we could get an inch or two with tuesday's storm looking interesting. right now still a moderate on our storm impact scale. pretty quiet right now which is how we like it, friday light. folks snuggled in. sounds good, doesn't it? a look at the toll plaza. still no metering lights and your drive from the east shore down into san francisco from,
