>> the first friday of the year. the gang is all here with the exception of alexis who is with her baby. sue hall is here. mike nicco is covering the wet weather. it's light. we will have waves of showers today. some of those will be modern at times but the breezes will stay light and the potential of flooding remains very light, also. a look at live doppler 7. you can see the green increasing across the north bay and along the peninsula coast. storms are moving from southeast and that means the inland will be the last to receive the showers and have the lightest amounts. here's a look at san jose, 280 at 17. it's mainly cloudy down there. my accuweather 12-hour day planner, mid-50s. now in the upper 50s with moderate showers from noon to 4:00 and showers will decrease. it will be in the mid-50s at 7:00. that's a look at our forecast for now. how about the commute? here is sue? >> pretty light.

we do have wet conditions but traffic is flowing nicely. to walnut creek. taillights to the 24 junction. if your travels take you through the san ramone you're looking at a 17-minute drive. now speaking of concord we have an issue on the northbound 242 ramp for the entire corrector ramp shut down due to an accident. i'm not seeing a lot of slow traffic there. they do have ambulance and emergency crews on scene so hopefully they'll get that ramp reopened and back to normal. you can take 680 to westbound highway 4 and avoid this problem from northbound to westbound 4. at the live desk still keeping tabs on that big winter storm back east. it has now brought in heavy snow, hurricane force winds, and record flooding. and the severe weather there affecting air travel across the country. that was the case across the

country yesterday. a lot of flights delayed or canceled. i want to show you a live look at new york city. jfk airport in new york starting to get back on track this morning. not every airport on the east coast is dealing with that. some airports like in charleston, south carolina, still closed today until monday, in fact, because they don't have snow or ice removal. we want to go now to abc news reporter amy hollyfield. reporter amy hollyfield. she is live at sfo. any delays this morning? >> reporter: things are improving, jessica. you still do see cancellations on the big board. we do have flights leaving for boston. the situation is getting better. so far we have 35 cancellations and that includes arrivals and departures.

yesterday there were 97. jfk has reopened. they're going to start working on clearing out the backlog of flights. >> we got the airline to change our flight. we didn't come to the airport yesterday because we were notified. >> reporter: he explains perfectly why you don't see people sleeping here at sfo waiting to get on a flight. people are getting text alerts now that their flight is canceled and they rebook with their smart phones and stay comfortable where they are far away from the airport. officials here tell me this morning they're still waiting for today's faa numbers. hopefully things will improve even more. as you know, check your flight

just in case. but things are improving. live at sfo, amy hollyfield. >> amy, thank you. a push this morning to free a uc berkeley student arrested by u.s. border patrol agents after making a wrong turn. 20-year-old mora is a transfer student. he and his girlfriend were on their way home when they missed a turn and ended up in an immigration checkpoint where he was detained. he reportedly came to the u.s. from colombia as a child and overstayed his visa. a page has raised $2,500 to help him post bond. a uc berkeley spokesperson says they're looking into the matter to see if they can do anything to help. we are learning more about the e. coli outbreak in romaine lettuce. they haven't been able to nail down the source yet. "consumer reports" is telling us to avoid romaine lettuce altogether. there's no particular brand or selby date to look for. 17 people in 13 states have been diagnosed with e. coli infections in the u.s.

one american has died. "consumer reports" says this is the first time it's issued a warning before the fda and cdc. >> it's unusual. we've never been in this situation before where a foreign government that we share a food supply with has warned its citizens and the u.s. government is not doing it. >> reporter: washing is not enough to get rid of e. coli bacteria. all other types of lettuce should be safe. more than 24 hours since the 4.4 magnitude quake rattled the bay area. we saw so many responses from you who felt it including those who live right over the epicenter. here is where they say it hit this brick home sits on the hillside where it hit. the strong jolt rattled him right out of bed. >> wow. that's how it felt. it really felt it was right

the heavier rain and faster breezes for our storm monday and tuesday. we're seeing some showers show up around san leandro and down to hayward. also right through brisbane right now. look at what's lurking off the coast of san francisco and up to the marin head lands, possible moderate shower there. some light showers up to geyserville and this will continue heading up to the northeast. we have some light to a spotty we have some light to a spotty moderate shower. we're going to see a little rain train develop with some of our higher rainfall amounts right along interstate 80. by the afternoon hours it starts a better chance into our inland and east bay and tapers during the evening commute. by the time we get to 10:30 it's just about over.

attacked her. matt keller this morning. >> reporter: we are expected to learn more about the man's identity at a news conference today. he was taken into custody last night two days after the attack happened. here's surveillance video of the suspect walking around harker middle school tuesday morning. the suspect snuck onto the campus, sexually assaulted and robbed an employee about an hour before kids showed up for class. our media partner "the mercury news" says the victim is a teacher. she called 911. when police arrived the man was gone. officers tracked him down last night. the head of harker middle school issued a statement to "the mercury news" about the man's arrest saying this was a senseless, heartbreaking crime and our entire community is grieving. we are relieved this criminal has been arrested and hopeful justice will be served. eddie garcia will release new

details at noon. happening today in san francisco a judge will rule whether to grant the suspect in the kate steinle case a new trial on the conviction of possessing a firearm. jurors found jose ines garcia zarate guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. he was found not guilty on murder and manslaughter charges. if the judge upholds the gun conviction today, garcia zarate will be sentenced. the man accused of plotting an attack on san francisco's pier 39 is facing arraignment on terror charges. everitt aaron jameson is scheduled to be in a federal courtroom in fresno today. prosecutors said he planned to use homemade pipe bombs to force people into one spot and then shoot them with an assault rifle. the indictment says jameson told undercover fbi agents he wanted to attack pier 39 on christmas day as a show of support for isis. he went into detail how he planned to assemble the bombs and where he was going to put them. jameson was discharged from the marines in 2009.

one north bay man charged with burglary and sexual assault of a girl within the home. noah holland broke into a rohnert park home yesterday morning, climbed on top of the sleeping girl in her bedroom. officers say he got into the home by finding a garage door opener in an unlocked car in the driveway. the girl fought holland off. the mother heard her screams and called 911. neighbors are stunned. >> my heart goes out to them especially the little girl. you can't even imagine. it's horrific. i hope he gets what's coming to him because it just shouldn't happen. >> 18-year-old tristan ford was arrested. police say he was not involved in the sexual assault. police in the east bay are asking for the public's help in finding suspected arsonist who set fire to a motor home with someone inside. they believe martha javier set the motor home on fire.

that fire happened on solano way and hilltop road. good samaritans rescued the man. he was burned and is now in critical condition. 6:35 now. with flu season already bad and expected to get worse, new restrictions about where people are allowed to go in the south bay. a health officer says many serious cases. some people ended up in the icu. this flu season is so severe visitation is now restricted. no one under 16 years old is allowed am patients can only have one visitor at a time. no flu-related deaths have been reported in the county so far. >> we're really concerned that as this flu spreads there will be a significant amount of mortality and deaths as a result. in santa clara county at least four people have died from the flu since the season began. the health department reports five outbreaks just this past week. eight outbreaks in all. in southern california the first case of sexually transmitted zika virus has been

confirmed in los angeles county. a woman got it from her partner shortly after he traveled to mexico in november. the zika virus is most commonly transmitted by mosquitos. it's rare for it to happen during sex according to health officials. they say the case is a reminder to take precautions if you or your partner traveled to an area with risk of zika. it is a concern for pregnant women as it can cause birth defects. at the live desk the former anchor who took on sexual harassment at fox news is now taking the reins of the miss america organization after its own scandal. in an abc news exclusive gretchen carlson, a former miss america winner herself, says she's on a mission to make big changes to the organization and all of this comes after she learned top executives resigned over leaked e-mails. those e-mails exposed alleged sexist and lude comments about

mild the temperatures are, mid-50s to low 60s. in some cases we're warmer than our average high for today. we have 50 in livermore. brentwood, 51. those are the cool spots. the rest of us around 55 to 60 degrees. this afternoon in the low to mid-60s in most neighborhoods. upper 50s across the north bay. let's take a quick look at the morning lows. we'll clear out in the north bay before the fog sets in. the rest of us in the low to upper 40s. it's going to be significantly cooler tomorrow. we'll take a look at today's rain hour by hour and some snow in the sierra. here is sue. >> a little research about the bay bridge. we saw some slow traffic. nothing happening here at the toll plaza. no metering lights. look at that on the red zooming in to our 3d camera. we can see very slow traffic westbound on the upper deck and here's why. it looks like there's a stalled big rig inside the tunnel at the treasure island off ramp with

news app. download it now. we have breaking news out of san jose mineta airport. engine problems with an american airlines plane. we just got off the phone with an airport official and do have a crew going out there now. you can see sky 7 above the area trying to get to the airport to give us a better idea what happened there. when we spoke to airline officials they tell us an american airlines fleet, flight 1318, had taken off for dfw in dallas at 6:05 this morning but there was some sort of problem with the engine. the engine had to be shut down and then that flight returned to the airport. san jose firefighters are at the airport. we reached out to american airlines for more information as well. you can see sky 7 headed to the scene. as soon as we get more information or a better look at

and have that for you. i'm going to take you around the state for just a second. 70s and 80s in socal with sunshine. and then rain possible from monterey, modesto, to snow in yosemite. temperatures in the 50s and even some 40s around tahoe. the snow level is about 7,500 feet. if you're heading up three hours after the sun sets that's when it will start getting dicey. about 1 to 6 inches possible. it's quiet in lake tahoe. let me jump ahead to monday and tuesday. this could be our first dumping of snow. maybe a foot. possibly two. we're going to keep an eye on that storm monday and tuesday. remember, that's the same storm that could bring us an inch or two of rain. it's a 2, moderate on our storm impact scale. i'll have more on that. here's jessica.

still tracking that massive winter storm on the east coast. the heavy snow and hurricane force winds already have battered the east coast. now there's record flooding to go on top of that. floodwaters froze, hitting the street. and those cars on the side of the street kind of just froze stuck in one place. rescuers in boston, massachusetts, have at least pulled out dozens of people to safety, and water has surrounded homes. >> i am fine. the house flooded out. propane tank flipped over. >> shocked at how quickly the water rose. the freezing cold temperatures are keeping people indoors and the storm is causing big headaches for travelers. airports still dealing with the trickle down effect including bay area airports.

the other airlines will continue to defend themselves against the lawsuit. following the massive wildfires, major insurance companies are denying coverage to homeowners in high-risk areas. >> even those who are able to get coverage are facing problems. according to a report some homeowners are getting hit with much higher insurance rates in the aftermath of the fires. the state department of insurance is urging lawmakers to draft a bill that would help secure affordable insurance. >> this is very frustrating. they're doing everything fire officials tell them to do. at the same time the home insurer is not writing insurance. one of our recommendations to address that is that if the homeowner does these things to protect their homes, then the insurance would have to be written for them. >> about $9 billion in insurance claims in the north bay. san francisco billionaire tom steyer may be running for office. his political group says he's going to make a major announcement monday in

flight 1318 had taken off for dfw at 6:05 this morning. there was a problem. an engine had to be shut down and the flight returned. we originally thought the plane may have been in the air, but american airlines is telling us the flight never actually left the ground and just returned to the gate. here is a statement we just got minutes ago from the airline saying, quote, the flight returned to the gate due to a mechanical issue. it has not taken off. the fire department has the fire department has confirmed there was no fire.
