there are two types of people in the world. those who fear the future... and those who embrace it. the future is for the unafraid. ♪ all because of you ♪ ♪ good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thank you for joining us on this sunday, january 7th. let's start with a quick look at the weather, our meteorologist lisa argen is up on the road. hey, carolyn. good morning to you. it is foggy up here in the 30s and the 40s. fog has spread all about the bay. we have a half mile in hayward, two miles in san carlos. that's a little better at the airport, a mile visibility. six miles in the south bay.

a quarter mile in santa rosa and by the delta. so current numbers in the upper 30s around the fringes of the bay. and we're at 44 in oakland. by 7:00 n the upper 40s for oakland and san matteo. a good deal of cloud cover, 53 for san ramon. then by 7:00 tonight, we've got some upper 40s. but tomorrow's big day, we're looking at a flash flood watch through the day on monday for the north bay. the recent burn areas. and a wind advisory throughout the afternoon. so we've got a big storm system coming in tomorrow. it's going to last all day. take us through tuesday morning. i'll time it out for you when i see you next in the accuweather forecast. thank you. developing news out of fairfield this morning where the search is on for a gunman who opened fire on an east bay freeway leaving one man with life-threatening wounds and injuring seven others. police tell us this was not an accident. the gunman targeted his victim in an act that led to the closure of neighboring streets

and freeway ramps for seven hours. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the details. >> so at this time we don't know the if it was an exchange of gunfire or not. what i do know is that the victim was in a silver honda accord and that a vehicle pulled up next to him and shots were fired in his direction. >> reporter: the shooting happened around 3:30 saturday afternoon. the driver of this honda accord was hit multiple times. the other car sped off. >> the driver was incapacitated. his vehicle veered across and subsequently collided with other cars. >> reporter: first he crashed into this suv and then this car. >> he was somewhat coherent. he's at the hospital now. >> reporter: lieutenant josiah jacobson says the driver is in critical condition. a total of seven other people were in the other two vehicles, some of them were injured as well. >> they were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. some just precautionary.

>> some of the cars have been impacted. >> we just have information there were a couple other vehicles that fell victim to the collision that were no longer on scene when our officers arrived. so we are asking especially those drivers to give us a call. >> reporter: police are reviewing nearby surveillance cameras hoping to identify the suspect's vehicle. in fairfield, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. a man from the los angeles area faces charges after investigators say he planted a camera inside a mill valley home to peep on a boy. the sheriff's office tweeted this picture of 32-year-old marcus alan williams being taken into custody friday night at san francisco international airport. we are told he's a friend of the boy's family and was on his way to visit them. the boy's mother found the camera as well as images on it last week and called the sheriff's office. investigators say williams was previously a guest at the home.

they are now trying to determine if there are more victims. the owner and founder of the barrel coffee company has offered to step down after a sexual harassment lawsuit was brought against him. eight former employees filed the lawsuit against four barrel owner jeremy tucker seen here in a facebook photo. he's also accused of creating a toxic workplace for female employees. at least one company has severed ties with four barrel. and in a tweet, lemarais bakery said it will no longer be ordered from four barrel. tucker has not responded to the lawsuit. san francisco is embarking on day two of legally selling recreational pot. after a saturday date, it was a success by all accounts.

dispensaries opened all over the city. carlos is here to show us the fanfare. >> reporter: for some it was like the grand opening of a new retail store. for others, it was more of a holy experience. >> it is almost like going to heaven when you are waiting for some saint to come and open it for you. >> reporter: a handful of sf dispensaries with permission to offer recreational weed opened their doors. >> the last 15 hours have been crazy. >> reporter: unlike other people that began sales on january 1st, san francisco businesses had to wait for the city to iron out its regulations. >> we had a lot of issues we had to work through. there were people who frankly didn't understand cannabis. super happy to be open now. i think everything has due course. >> reporter: the founder didn't mind the way but wasn't too thrilled after u.s. attorney general jeff sessions announced a federal crackdown on states that legalize marijuana. >> i can't say that it's the end

because federal government is still not friendly it to, but certainly in california and san francisco, so a big hooray to those who made that happen. >> reporter: for now, whether it is used for medical or recreational purposes, pot users are celebrating this occasion. >> people in my life have been fighting for this day to come. >> reporter: just remember, you will be carded. you must be 21 years old to buy no more than an ounce of cannabis. in san francisco, carlos salsado, abc 7 news. somebody in new hampshire is deciding how to spend $570 million. that's the person who bought the only winning ticket in the second largest jackpot in powerball history. here are the winning numbers, 12, 29, 30, 33, 61, the powerball number is 26. before last night's drawing, people were stacking up.

here's looney rivera. >> reporter: this customer believes good luck can happen more than once in the same place. this store sold a ticket that matched five of six numbers in friday's mega millions drawing which won $1.8 million. >> i'm a little upset because i always buy my tickets here. and it's the one day i didn't buy them here. >> reporter: but not too disappointed to try again. >> it's thrilling! you never know. you can quit your job tomorrow because you are a millionaire. >> reporter: customers lined up for shots at the $570 million powerball jackpot. >> there are people who say i'm not going to play unless it is over $300 million. >> this should be the lucky one! >> reporter: this store and others in the bay area from castro valley to knob hill are keeping busy selling tickets for mega millions and powerball. high-dueling jackpots keep customers coming back. >> it's a big, big one.

my god. i will retire working if i hit that one and can help a lot of people back home. >> reporter: business slowed down saturday night, a stark contrast to all the daytime action at this 7-eleven. and the jackpot dropped to $40 million. lottery officials say someone in new hampshire purchased the $570 million powerball jackpot winning ticket. in daily city, lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. and there's a $450 million winner in florida. not yet clear who bought friday's mega millions winning ticket at this sev7-eleven. they have 180 days to claim their prize. and a witness took this video at geary and third avenue in inner richmond. crews are going to the intersection and then the suv comes in from the right side hitting it.

the police officer responding to another police car. the first crash happened at 8:30 yesterday morning. a witness tells abc 7 news the driver of the black car ran a red light hitting the police suv. police say a total of three officers and one other person was hurt in the crash. but they are all expected to recover. and now to the crash of a truck that ended up petaluma river. the vehicle vailed to navigate a curve near highway 101. he was able to escape from the truck. his two dogs also apparently made it out. they have not yet been found. john

raiders has been confirmed. welcome back, coach gruden. let's get to work. >> reporter: 20 years ago on monday when the raiders saw john gruden as the youngest coach in the nfl at 34 years of age. he was traded four years later by al davis to tampa bay. after seven years as the head ban of the bucs and the past nine years in the "monday night football" booth, john gruden will be the raiders' new head coach. coach gruden is going to be paid $10 million for the next ten years. gruden can take advantage of no state taxes in las vegas. he has not coached in almost a decade, but a state around the game with quarterback camps. but this is a different league and are not what it used to be. this is the longest contract handed out in the nfl. the raiders owner mark davis is taking his legacy on john gruden

the curtain is falling at the rheem theater. the "east bay times" is told that the rheem is too expensive to keep up. it is too expensive to keep up having to deal with netflix and redbox. and also happening today, an east bay church will celebrate its third anniversary as it does every year by giving away a car. abc 7 news was at the church at antioch last year to see the giveaway. the church selects one deserving family from a pool nominations that michigan poring in over the fall. they will make community service and engagement a part of the its purpose. happening today, a tradition like no other for the tenth straight year. it's no pants day in san

francisco. participants don't wear pants on subways or in this city's case bart. that's the only requirement of trying to keep a straight face. no pants day began 17 years ago nationwide. it's a stunt by the group improv everywhere to create a scene of chaos and joy. you may want to make a note to self to stand on bart tomorrow. and a developing story weapon continue to track. the deep breeze will not let the grip go across much of the eastern united states. temperatures are well below the freezing mark and then there's all that snow. the northeast is digging out following a monster storm. as abc's daria alba tells us, the weather is creating a lot of chaos. >> reporter: brutal cold gripping the nation. a fire at the worst possible time, this row house in north philadelphia up in flames. two people killed, one of them a

firefighter after part of the structure collapsed. >> we are without words. >> reporter: that firefighter, an 11-year veteran of the department. the area airports ground to a halt. this air china flight stuck on the tarmac at new york's jfk airport for seven hours. >> you can imagine the frustration that many people feel after having to land in new york, going to be told they are going to be sitting on the tarmac for three hours, is what we were originally told. >> reporter: a backlog of flights to lead to a reduction in gate space according to airport management. inside, passengers stranded. further south in charleston, one of two runways finally reopened days after rare snowfall. >> we're not equipped like they would be in boston. we expect this weather once every ten years. >> reporter: meantime, the chicago river almost completely frozen. crews working to keep roadways safe and at least a few brave souls taking on the elements. but there's good news, milder air is expected to slowly expand eastward and temperatures are expected to finally rise above

freezing for much of the midwest and the northeast. and it is so cold in michigan, look at this phenomenon in lake michigan. the lake near good harbor bay in glenn arbor is filled with what are called ice balls. they form when chunks of ice break off into the water and the lake's wave action grind the chunks into spherical structures. back here at home, it's not cold, but we will get some rain this week as lisa's been telling us. as tomorrow's storm comes in, skiers should expects plenty of snow in the sierra. north star, colorado, tweeted this picture. six inches of snow fell there yesterday. and kirkwood resort is showing this view of people getting in their early morning runs with

seven inches. we definitely need it, we need the rain. it's been feast or famine. and boy, it's been a drought almost all around here. we'll get heavy rain and gusty winds tomorrow. here's a live look out from the live doppler 7. and you'll notice that we do have cloud cover with temperatures on the cool side. visibility is reduced from the airport. three miles in san carlos. a mile in san jose. and the typical foggy spots from petuloma. to storm systems, one to the south, one to the north. merging over the bay area early tomorrow morning, 39 in novato. 45 in fremont with 42 in livermore. 46 in morgan hill. so we bring in the storm impact scale, this is a level three. this means it's a strong system. heavy rain at times, strong winds. there are flooding concerns, certainly for the areas adjacent to the burn areas from the north bay fires. let's time it out, 1:00 in the

morning is when it begins. then 5:00, heavy rain from the east bay down the peninsula. 9:00 in the morning, the heavy rain shifts to the north bay, but it's a solid area of rain and picks up by the afternoon with rainfall rates exceeding perhaps a half inch an hour. this is why we're looking at the flooding around the bay area. 9:00 tonight, wow, we could see heavier rain. final push, late in the overnight hours, we'll look at the flooding mere from it looks sloppy by tuesday, but by afternoon it pushes into the sierra nevada in the form of snow on tuesday. and we should be in the clear later on tuesday. but amounts, 2 1/2 inches in

novato. an inch and a half in hayward. an inch and three quarters in san ramon. and the winds will be strong from noon tomorrow to 6:00 tuesday morning. so accompanying that heavy rain, gusts of 30 to 35 miles an hour along the coast. 34-mile-an-hour gusts. through 5:00 monday night, and still look at that san francisco. when the storm watch goes into effect monday night, she will be six thousand above feet and the wind is in excess of 50 miles an hour. today, 59 and a lot of clouds around. 62 in san jose. and the accuweather seven-day forecast, the 50s and 60s today. downpou downpours, windy, and then by wednesday more clouds. then more sunshine and milder weather heads our way thursday, friday and saturday. so it's like we're getting all the rain we need in one day. so there is going to be some

welcome back, everyone. we're starting this half hour with meteorologist lisa argen. >> it is chilly and boy is it foggy all around the bay area. we're looking at visibility at a quarter mile, napa, santa rosa, three quarters a mile. san jose and half a mile at the airport. so this will change around throughout the morning hours. it will be in some bad situations. then it might get better and a little worse. so be prepared for that. the 46 in hayward, 45 in fremont. this is the way it looks here on the roof where numbers are chilly. then through 7:00, we'll see a few more 40s. by noontime, low to mid-50s. plenty of clouds and a few peeks of sun with numbers near 60. a flash flood watch has been issued from the national weather service. tomorrow afternoon through the evening for the recent burn areas, we are looking at high rainfall rates tomorrow and accompanying that will be very strong winds. the wind advisory from noon tomorrow to 6:00 on tuesday.

with the gusty winds, we can see some possible problems with power lines down. and we're telling you all this to get prepared. today is your dry day. and we're going to see is a solid 20 to 24 hours of rain around here. and we'll time it out for you in just a few minutes. all right, thank you, lisa. some doctors say this is the worst flu season in 15 to 20 years. pharmacies are running out of medicine to treat it and emergency rooms are hot. a doctor in the east bay does not recommend you go to the emergency room for flu-like symptoms unless you feel really bad or have a chronic medical condition. some bay area hospitals are limiting visitors younger than 16 since they can be more vulnerable to the effects of the flu. medical experts say this year's flu season may be outpacing last year's because it's peaking earli earlier. president trump continues to defend himself against that new book that claims he's mentally

unfit for office. he tweeted, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being really, like, smart. he also called himself a stable genius. the book "fire and fury" by michael wolff was released on friday and flying off the shelves. wolff said he spent countless hours with the president's aides and three hours with the president himself. president trump denies that calling wolff a fraud and the book a work of fiction. president trump is joining the vice president and several vip leaders at camp david this weekend. as ashley cohen reports, they are discussing more for the legislative year ahead. >> reporter: the first weekend of the new year and president trump got a working start. meeting with gop leaders and members of his cabinet with camp david to outline this year's legislative agenda. >> security discussed

one of president trump's strongest supporters, u.s. ambassador to the u.n., nikki haley, will be one of the guests on "this week with george stephanopoulos." also ranking member bernie sanders will also make an appearance. and there' a discussion of the latest in the russia investigation. and gusty winds this time tomorrow. 46 in hayward, 46 in concord. it's 40 in santa rosa. and it's a three on the storm impact scale for tomorrow. meaning heavy rains at times, strong winds and flooding concerns. this is the way it's going to start with rain overnight tonight. and then by about tomorrow morning, 5:00, we're looking at the rain picking up throughout the morning commute. 9:30, some heavy rain around the bay. by 3:00 in the afternoon, we have downpours. and then your evening commute looks just as sloppy with pockets of very heavy rain. so 11:00, it's not over yet. so that is why the national weather service monday afternoon through monday evening has issued a flash flood watch with the recent burn areas. rain in excess of a half inch an hour that could allow for debris flow and mudslides for areas adjacent to the the burn areas, the atlas fire and the nunn. we want you to be advised of that in case you have to move. and by tuesday morning, we're looking at more rain here. you can notice 5:00, your morning commute is still soggy.

but this should push quickly into the valley and allow for a better evening commute. but if we add up the two-day totals, we're looking at excess of about two inches in san francisco. two-and-a-half inches up in novato. and close to two in concord. over an inch in fremont. maybe an inch and a half on the peninsula. a wind advisory from noon monday to 6:00 tuesday. could see trees and power lines down with winds out of the south, 20 to 30 miles an hour and gusting to over 50. so here's the heavy rain. 10:00 on monday, 20 to 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts. and it just gets gustier throughout the afternoon as the system continues to push on through. look at 9:00 monday night, 46-mile-an-hour winds at sfo. and then it does ease up. in the mountains, it means snow, the second half of the system, the first half is rain. monday night into tuesday morning, the heaviest snow tuesday morning, tuesday afternoon, 6 to 12 inches. about 6,000 feet. 25 to 50-mile-an-hour wind
