nation a new year's gift with a precious conclusion. the north wants to send high-level officials, athletes, group of cheerleaders and their tae kwon do demonstration team. the south suggested resuming military talks and discussed denuclearization, but was quickly ignored. overall, though, reaction here in seoul is full of optimism. the north showing very strong determination to make this work out. since they hope this opportunity could lead to a groundbreaking momentum towards peace on the korean peninsula. kendis, maggie? >> johee, thanks so much. now to another breaking story. california is getting hit with its first major rainstorm in a year. >> the rain is falling overnight from practically one end of the state to another. as much as nine inches could fall in some areas, and the same areas stripped of brush during the wildfires last fall could get plenty of rain. >> this is serious. there are flash flood watches and warning overnight. some people are spending the

night in hotels, taking no chance. >> several residents have been ordered to evacuate. with officials going door to door to notify them. it's not just the fear of a torrent of water washing down on homes but what that water might bring with it. >> it looks like it could get a little muddy, a little scary. our side of the street not so much, but up at the end of the street there's a lot of debris flow. >> the storm is also drenching northern california, also hit hard by wildfires. so far no evacuations have been ordered in santa rosa, located about 50 miles north of san francisco. but crews are keeping an eye on the burned areas there as well. california is not the only weather trouble spot this morning. >> paul williams from accuweather is keeping an eye on all of it. good morning, paul. >> good morning, kendis, maggi. the rain was much needed, but we're going to have too much of a good thing with debris flow

were the most expensive in history. after an intense manhunt, police say they have arrested a suspect accused of killing a deputy during an armed home invasion south of tacoma. here's clayton sandell. >> reporter: in washington state, investigators say an accused cop killer has just been captured. 34-year-old sheriff's deputy mccartney was responding to reports of an intruder at a home south of seattle. when mccartney arrived six minutes later, he chaseded two suspects who had taken off. investigators say one pulled a gun. you can hear mccartney on the radio. put it down! in the gun battle one got away. one was killed. officers rushing deputy mccartney to the hospital, but he did not survive. >> bravery shows, he took off after them.

>> reporter: mccartney was a navy vet, married with three young boys. he had been with the sheriff's department for three short year. he is the fourth law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty in 2018. denver. the russia investigation may soon lead to president trump coming face-to-face with special counsel robert mueller. abc news has confirmed that mueller's office will likely request an interview with the president. sources say mueller himself raised the possibility last month at a meeting with trump's attorneys. the president has not ruled out an interview. so far, though, no details on the scope of the question or the time frame. the president's daughter is the latest to praise oprah winfrey's golden globes speech. despite speculation that winfrey could run for president, the #oprah 2020 went viral during her moving speech. backstage when oprah was told about the oprah 2020 hash tag she said i don't, i don't, when asked if she planned on running. this is what she told her long-time friend gayle king.
