families. amy, thank you so much. the faa investigating another close call at sfo. this involves a flight coming in for a landing tuesday morning. >> aeromexico 668, go around. >> the controller noticed when the plane was about a mile out it had lined up on the wrong runway. the runway had a virgin america flight on it filled with passengers. the faa says the aeromexico pilots were using a guidance system used in bad weather to help with the approach. in july an air canada flight mistook a crowded taxiway for 28 right. the plane flew as low as 59 feet off the ground before the pilot aborted the landing. rent in the bay area is super expensive. now the effort to expand rent control across the state will take a big step forward today. they will hold a hearing to discuss repealing the law that prevents cities from imposing

rent control on housing built after 995. that bill was introduced last year. it was put on hold because of strong opposition by landlords. the san jose couple who purchased a private street is suing the city to get it back. "the chronicle" reports michael chang and his wife filed a suit in superior court claiming the board of supervisors went beyond its authority when it overturned the sale of presidio terrace. they purchased it at a tax auction after the homeowners association failed to pay $994 in back taxes. seven more people are sick from e. coli that may be linked to contaminated romaine lettuce. the government still isn't issuing a recall. so far bacterial infections have killed two people including one person here in california. dozens more have gotten sick across the u.s. and canada. consumer reports is advising people stay away from romaine altogether, but the government still hasn't pinpointed the

origin of the outbreak. >> we think it's important to avoid eating romaine lettuce until the cause of the outbreak is determined. >> reports also warns washing e. coli tainted fruits or vegetables is not going to remove the harmful bacteria from them. a fifth person has died from the flu in santa clara county. health officials say the person was under 65 and had not been vaccinated. they add the number of flu cases has spiked since the beginning of the year. it's been a particularly rough season in california. statewide at least 29 people under the age of 65 have died as a result of the flu, and that is about three times higher compared to the same time last year. governor brown plans to ask the trump administration to block the expansion of offshore oil drilling in california like he's already done in florida. the energy department redeveloped a plan last week that includes six new leases from drilling platforms off california's coast. florida received an exemption tuesday after its governor

complained about possible environmental damage. the sacramento bee reports california may take legal action to stop offshore drilling. first things first, this morning we're dealing with dense fog, quarter mile visibility in napa. look at the half mile by the delta. half moon bay, and still oakland and hayward not so great. a live look outside, you can see it's a little foggy in the city. use caution if you're heading out in the car, mass transit. no problems. if you're on the bay there will be patchy, dense fog. it's 54 in oakland. milder this morning. look at that, 55 hayward. 53 in livermore. no 30s to speak of. in the south bay today holding on to a lot of cloud cover, temperatures in the upper 50s topping to near 60 by 2:00 in the afternoon. staying there through about 4:00 and still pretty gray throughout

waking up to dense fog by fair field. not just in the north bay this morning. the big picture today as you're heading out of town. the rain has ended in southern california. 71 there. we have the high elevation snow. above 7,000 feet. low 50s if the afternoon. cold start in the 20s. i am tracking developments in the deadly mud slides in southern california. the death toll still rising. at least 17 people are dead. 17 others are believed to be

missing around the town of montecito in santa barbara county. hundreds are stranded with roads cut off and no water supply. abc news reporter maggie ruly with more. >> reporter: rescuers are going door-to-door searching for survivors in southern california, placing an "x" when it's all clear. >> i didn't think it would ever turn into something like this. we've never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: powerful mud slides funneling down the hillsides left bare ren by last month's fires. flying over the damage. >> if you look out there you can see all of these homes completely surrounded in mud. >> reporter: new video shows the mud slides' power. an empty car bobsledding down the street as a muddy mess washes downhill. >> oh, my god, mom! >> reporter: marco and his family scrambling to safety as a wall of mud hits their home. >> close the door.

wake dad up. >> reporter: the farrell family some of the lucky ones, surviving the ordeal. but the death toll is rising, at least 17 people have been killed including the founder of a catholic school. and this morning pictures surfacing of some of the missing. 12-year-old sawyer corey and her sister. and ken, who hasn't been heard from since tuesday. >> this is unbelievable. >> reporter: at least 400 homes are damaged or destroyed. the evacuations still ongoing. it could take weeks or possibly months to restore drinking water in montecito. meanwhile, here at the live desk i want to show you this, reinforcements from the bay area are helping with search and rescue efforts. california air national guard members based in silicon valley posted these photos of what they're seeing from their helicopter. also, a 30-person team from marin county is deployed in mant

cito. they'll begin search and rescue operations this morning. it's 4:40 now. a brand-new book questioning president trump's state of mind is now a bestseller. >> "fire and fury" has sold 29,000 copies since friday. sales are tracked through saturday. the high demand has caught the publisher off guard. initially it planned to print 150,000 copies. it's now raising that number to more than a million. for those looking to borrow a copy, good luck. a long waiting list is at bay area libraries. california secretary of state is criticizing the trump administration's plan to add a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. >> millions of people will not participate if the census asks them that. the idea is a clear retaliation against california by president trump and his administration. >> he's anti-immigrant. he's anti- a lot of things california prides itself on. a cynical ploy like asking a

question about citizenship to the census is pretty blatant, in my opinion, and we have to push back. >> he feels this is what will happen n. an accurate census count california could miss out on billions of dollars in federal funding and possibly the loss of congressional seats. >> an advocacy group is calling on the nfl to investigate whether the raiders violated the rooney rule when they hired jon gruden as coach. that rule says teams must interview minority candidates for senior coach positions. an advocacy group that promotes adversity expressed concern that raiders' owner mark davis came to an agreement with gruden before the team interviewed any minorities. raiders' general manager mckenzie says he interviewed two minority candidates before gruden's hiring was announced. happening today virgin america officially becomes part of alaska airlines. >> alaska bought burlingame-based virgin and today will begin operating under the same federal license. that means they'll be considered a single airline by the faa.

you'll still see virgin planes in the air and at airports until april when their branding will be changed to alaska. virgin america first launched with a large operation at sfo. >> it is the end of an era for sure. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. here is lisa argen. >> look at the cloud cover here. we have fog. it will get worse and move around throughout the morning hours. you can see petaluma very low visibility, nothing right there. quarter mile napa. a half mile on the coast. we have some in the east bay from emeryville. concord looking at the fog. half-mile visibility by the delta. right now the south bay is okay but there is haze out there. as we widen the perspective with the dirty ridge of high pressure keeping us dry, but it's so well offshore allowing for the clouds to stream in today. not getting too warm. the overnight lows were held up because of the cloud cover. 53 in san ramone. 52 in walnut creek.

the cool numbers in the mid-40s in novato. throughout the day today you'll notice the clouds, and then there's a weak weather system to the north that could provide a few sprinkles for sonoma county up to which will ets, clover dale, even novato could get a brief sprinkle. a lot of cloud cover here. peeks of sun elsewhere. once again we'll do it all later on tonight with the fog in the valley and throughout the bay area. but we have more sunshine on the way for the weekend. your highs today for this thursday, 59 in oakland today. 58 in san mateo. not a whole lot different than yesterday. in fact, temperatures will stay cool with the cloud cover. winds will be light. and we will be looking at numbers again tonight in the 40s and 50s. fog more of a problem tomorrow morning as well. but coming up we'll have a look at my seven-day outlook which shows sunnier and milder weather for the weekend. sue? fog is definitely an issue for traffic this morning. take an overall look at our traffic map. you can see the orange up in the north bay. that is the fog affecting your drive.

we had a big rig involved in an accident with a car. you can seep the red sensors squeaking out of our icon. fog a factor in the american canyon area, westbound 80 near just before the rest stop as you head up the hill which, by the way, highway 37 is experiencing very thick fog as well. no problems there. quick take a look at your mass transit options if you're heading out right now. b.a.r.t. trains are a great way to go. muni is on time. ace train number 1 is heading into tracy and that is on schedule. >> thank you, sue. we've learned the identity of the man killed when a boulder hit his car in napa. >> he was only 22 years old, hernan reyes. sky 7 flew over the scene of the deadly crash yesterday. a two-ton boulder hit the toyota on tuesday evening and knocked it down an unstable hillside. firefighters had to wait to remove his body until a cal trans geologist made sure the

hillside was safe. hoping you can recognize the two people on the left of your screen who shot and robbed a man. the victim is recovering after being attacked on december 5th. detectives say both robbers wore dark-hooded sweatshirts and drove a white chevy impala. the u.s. government is warning americans not to travel to five states including two with popular tourist destinations in mexico. sinaloa, guerrero, home of acapulco. the alert puts them in the same category as somalia, yemen, syria and afghanistan. the state department says americans should reconsider traveling to jalisco. it's now lifted restrictions on other tourism hot spots including cancun. taking acetaminophen while pregnant, how it could hurt

it seems unlikely, that is what president trump is now saying about the possible meeting with special counsel robert mueller as he continues his russia investigation. more from washington. >> reporter: abc news has confirmed special counsel robert mueller has told the president's lawyers he is likely to request an interview with the president but asked directly if he was willing to meet with mueller, the president hedged. >> i can only say this. there was absolutely no collusion. everybody knows it. >> reporter: president trump had previously said he was willing to meet with investigators. >> would you be willing to speak under oath to give your version -- >> 100%. >> reporter: on twitter the president dismissed it all as, quote, the single greatest witch-hunt in american history adding republicans should finally take control. he was asked to explain what that means. millennials, many of whom have been turning to other drinks like lacroix. >> mm-hmm. good morning, everybody. live doppler 7 looking at the cloud cover. there is a little bit of moisture offshore. a weak system will be moving in today providing a few sprinkles. first, heading out the door. zero visibility. look at napa and fairfield. half mile at half moon bay and not so great over in oakland and emeryville. keep that in mind. we had some cloud cover offshore and this is what will be keeping us mostly cloudy, perhaps providing a sprinkle or two. temperatures a lot like yesterday. upper 50s to low 60s but as we go into tomorrow, friday, starting the week we're going to be clear and look at sunnier conditions, even warmer for saturday. and fog has not settled down on the roadway in san rafael. a live look of 101 past the civic center and on over to

central rafael. once you've reached the waldo grade there is fog. they have lifted the fog advisory for the golden gate bridge. it was there but it wasn't that thick. it wasn't hampering visibility at all. the orange on the upper part of your traffic map is representing fog so take a look at the bay ferry having, again, some mechanical issues this morning. it is the 6:10 a.m. mare island and vallejo will be replaced by buses. there will be stewards on hand, mechanical issues again this morning. >> thank you, sue. at first you might think you're looking at a fireworks show but those are drones. 250 of them flying above the bellagio fountains. intel sponsored last night's display of shooting star drones. the display wowed tourists and tech folks attending the electronics show. they've done this at disneyworld as well. we did a whole story on it.
