>> reporter: we're hearing some pretty staggering numbers from officials. that 65 homes were destroyed. but nearly 450 others were damaged. so some of those residents and homeowners have been returning today to see if there is anything left to salvage. >> live in burbank. thank you. we have new pictures of the reinforcements from the bay area whelming the search and rescue. the california national guard tweeted these photos. they said 700 people were affected. >> it is a product of dry soil and heavy rains. this according to geologists and engineers. >> david louie walked the a geo technical engineer who said the hills and canyons put residents at risk. >> the magnitude of the

destruction was predictable after a major fire. the massive mud flow had enough force to knock houses off their foundations. the mud carried rocks and boulders as it gained speed. the power can't be underestimated. the u.s. geological survey says once the mud starts, it can reach a velocity of 35 miles an hour. the chair of the department of civil and environmental engineering described it in a different way. >> if i threw a gallon jug of water ought, you're going to feel impact pretty significantly because water is relatively heavy. now imagine that by a factor of thousands hitting your home. this is a significant force. >> the mud slide started in the middle of the night catching residents by surprise. however, dr. sullivan green said those living on hillsides or

here are the stories making headlines. there's been a bleak turn of events in the search for survivors buried under a mud slide in montecito. firefighters hopes of finding anybody alive in the mud stricken town are now fading. the death toll currently stands at 17. there's a news conference going on right now in santa barbara. the sheriff just announed there are 43 people that now may be considered missing and that total is up from eight earlier in the day. veronica from our sister station in los angeles tweeted out some video what highway 101 looks like. debris is everywhere. the highway has been closed for days now because of this disaster. melanie woodrow tweeted this photo. another swimmer was bitten by a sea lion. the latest victim not only says t she will recover. and an agreement to protect
