confirmed. the victims range in age from 3 to 89 years old. a house of worship was anything but a sanctuary from the disaster. this is the inside of a chapel in montecito. the mudslide left chairs piled in the middle of the church. and to the southeast in burbank, the torrential rain sent this mudslide and car sliding down a road, the side of a hill. the owner is just happy that he made it through the ordeal. >> look how high the water came up. barely made it out. rocks flowing. mud flowing everywhere. barely made it out. >> and the storm that caused those devastating mudslides in california is now hitting the east coast. >> yeah. let's check in with accuweather's julia widen to tell us about it. >> kendis, maggie we're talking about a major storm that's going to be impacting the northeast as we go through friday and saturday. for the i-95 corridor, the biggest issue is the locally heavy rain. we could see some spots that

will receive up to 3 inches of that heavy rain potentially causing flooding, not just on the roadways but also when it comes to your small streams and rivers. those have been iced up recently, that will cause some big issues. a changeover from rain to ice to snow in the interior northeast as we go through friday night into saturday. all of that will clear out very quickly on sunday as the chill arrives. here's how much snow we are expecting. locally could see up to 18 inches. kendis and maggie? >> wow. 18 inches in the watertown area. they're used to it up there. thank you. the new york city pipe bombing suspect has made his first court appearance. when asked to enter a plea, he said at this moment, not guilty. he's accused of setting off a pipe bomb in a subway passage at the port authority bus terminal. he was the only person seriously injured in the december 11th attack. in san francisco, yet another swimmer has been bitten by a sea lion. the victim's friend says they

not denying that he made the comments about haiti and africa. behind the scenes they say it might play well with its supporters. >> the white house statement almost seemed as if they're doubling down on this. here it is -- president trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation. so the president has called -- the president of haiti has called in the top u.s. diplomat there for a talk today. and there is a lot of reaction coming in. republican senator mia love, who calls the comments elitist and divisive and talked about her immigrant parents saying this. they worked hard, paid taxes and rose from nothing to take care of and provide opportunities for their children. the president must apologize. and here's thing about her. she's a republican in utah. and her parents, i believe, are of haitian descent. it's not just any republican

speaking out there. it's one of note there. >> and perhaps not surprisingly, many democrats just piling on. this one from california lieutenant governor gavin newsom tweeting you're a joke. resign. not too many words there, but pretty powerful. >> the narrative coming from many republicans overnight is if the comments are true, it would be a disappointing thing. their caveat, if it's true. the white house isn't necessarily saying -- that it's not true. >> exactly. >> i'm sure he'll be asked about it again today. >> the president does have one thing he has on his agenda where he's signing a proclamation for mlk day. >> crazy. >> isn't it ironic, as alanis would say. moving on, the senate will vote next week on a bill to reauthorize an important u.s. bylaw. >> that bill has been approved by the house only after it was thrown into temporary disarray that was caused by two presidential tweets. abc's cecelia vega has the

details. >> reporter: a morning of confusion began with this comment on one of president trump's favorite morning shows, a direct message to the president about that controversial surveillance program congress was set to reauthorize. >> i don't understand why donald trump is in favor of this. his woes began with unlawful foreign surveillance and unconstitutional domestic surveillance of him. mr. president, this is not the way to go. >> reporter: minutes later, the president took to twitter using the exact language that appeared on "fox and friends." house votes on controversial fisa act today. he said, this is the act that may have been used to so badly survey and abuse the trump campaign by the previous administration and others. the president's tweets seemed to contradict hisses policy. the white house supports reauthorizing fisa the program that allows the government to conduct warrantless surveillance on suspected terrorists overseas and u.s. soil. cue the chaos on capitol hill.

a flurry of calls between the president and confused lawmakers. speaker paul ryan spent half an hour on the phone with him. after those calls the president appeared to backtrack in a follow up tweet. today's vote is about foreign surveillance of foreign bad guys on foreign land. we need it. get smart. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: ultimately the house did vote to reauthorize the law. >> did he not understand what bill you were voting on today? >> he just has concerns about other parts of fisa. i think everybody knows that, too. >> reporter: and the top democrat on the senate intelligence committee went on the attack, saying the president endangered national security and that, quote, fisa is something the president should have known about long before he turned on fox this morning. >> many people are interpreting that first tweet from the president to mean he didn't know how fisa works and for that matter he wasn't familiar with his own administration's policy. does he know fisa? was he familiar with the policy? >> he does.

which is why we issued a presidential memo lasts week expressing concerns and he has a full understanding. >> reporter: another white house headline the president in a new interview with "the wall street journal" talking about north korea's kim jong-un saying, quote, i probably have a very good relationship with kim jong-un. the president did refuse to say whether or not he has actually sat down with the north korean dictator saying, quote, i am not saying i have or i haven't. it would be hard to imagine these two men being friendly given that president trump has called kim a depraved, twisted mad man. abc news, the white house. one more note out of washington, the president heads to walter reed medical center later today for the first physical exam of his tenure and he will undergo a battery of tests and be examined by a team of specialist doctors. trump will not undergo a formal mental health assessment. the white house says there will be a readout after trump's exam, but the level of detail that will be provided is unclear. when he was asked about the exam, mr. trump said he thinks

it's going to go very well and he would be very surprised if it doesn't. there is hope but not much time as rescue crews are still trying to find more of the missing in the california mudslides. that incredible devastation in montecito has left 17 people dead, ranging in age from 3 to 89 years old. more than 40 others are still missing. meantime, we're seeing new images of the disaster. here's abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: as rescuers and canines trudged through the sludge, time is running out. to find the people still believed missing. that series of mudslides destroyed or damaging more than 500 homes and businesses. >> you see this area with this home and pool, as we fade back to what's left there now, absolutely nothing. from burbank to montecito, the new images of the harrowing first moments. >> oh, my god, mom! >> reporter: marco farrow recording that wall of water, and you can hear it, panicked and panting as he scrambles to

the outrage swift in a tweet congressman elijah cummings called the president's statements unforgivable and demeaning to the office of the presidency. from senator cory booker, let me be clear, donald trump does not speak for america. it's a stunning setback to the d.r.e.a.m.er talks. earlier this week the president sat down with lawmakers and at times even seemed to agree with democrats. >> what about a clean daca bill now with a commitment that we go in to a comprehensive immigration reform procedure? >> i have no problem. i think that's basically what dick is saying. we're going to come up with daca, do daca, and then start immediately on the phase two which would be comprehensive. >> would you be agreeable to that? >> i would like to. >> mr. president, you need to be clear, though, i think what senator feinstein's asking here, when we talk about daca we don't want to be back here two years. you have to have security as the secretary would tell you. >> i think that's what she's saying. >> no. >> reporter: the president said he would sign whatever lawmakers could agree to, but he made

the president told the journal the recent talks between north and south korea could be an attempt to drive a wedge between the u.s. and the south koreans. >> here what he was tweeting overnight. the president confirming he has canceled a trip to london which was scheduled for next month. he was set to open the new u.s. embassy there, but the visit was sure to lead to large protests in london. the president said he canceled the trip because he didn't favor the real estate deal the u.s. made. he blamed it on the obama administration, but it was signed before obama actually took office. the frightening power of the california mudslides is raising the stakes for crews searching for the victims. take a look at this mangled hummer and honda found on a beach in montecito. hundreds of homes have been destroyed. the slides have left at least 17 people dead and more than 40 others are still unaccounted for. crews worry they're running out of time. here's marcy gonzalez. >> reporter: from above the
