good morning, i'm kendis gibson. good morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm maggie rulli in for diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now". the president undergoes his first physical exam in office today. he's coming under criticism for a remark he made with lawmakers. we'll have details on both those stories straight ahead. >> vice president mike pence was in vegas for the grand opening of a new air force innovation hub and says the country is depending on the program to provide new innovations and technologies to the air force. some major changes are coming to facebook. facebook says it's making the change to encourage more meaningful interaction between family and friends. and the "shape of water" and "big little lies" were among the big winners at last night's critics choice awards in santa

"shape of water" shaping up to be a big contender at the oscars. those nominations will be announced later this month. those are some of our top stories on this friday, january 12th. from abc news, this is "world news now." we do say good morning, everybody. we have made it to friday. >> feels good. >> yes. we're going to start with the president. but not for what you thought. we're going to start with his first presidential physical exam which is today. >> so far very little is known about the president's health. also, unclear how much more we'll know when today's exam is over. abc's jordan phelps reports. >> reporter: the bar was set high during the presidential campaign. donald trump's doctor claiming he would be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency. and trump regularly taking shots at his opponent's fitness to be president. >> you need tremendous physical and mental strength and stamina. hillary clinton doesn't have that strength or stamina.

believe me. >> reporter: now a year into the job, the 71-year-old president will have his own physical fitness tested, heading to walter reed today for his first checkup in office. >> i think it's going to go very well. i'll be very surprised if it doesn't. it better go well, otherwise the stock market will -- not be happy. >> reporter: many past presidents have done the same. some releasing the results to the public to show that they are fit for office. everything from the president's weight and cholesterol to what medications he takes and the results of a long list of exams including heart, lungs, and neurological. one test the white house says won't be part of the checkup, is a psychiatric exam. during the campaign, trump only released limited details about his physical condition. and even admitted to dr. oz that he's not the image of perfect health. >> you're 6'3", 236 pounds, i'm thinking your body surface area and bmi is high, is probably close to 30, sort of the barrier

house. the president, the other story, the president's critics are in a rage this morning because of vulgar comment he made during discussion about an immigration deal we have the details. >> reporter: president trump's shocking objection to the possible bipartisan agreement on the d.r.e.a.m.ers. >> no deal yet. >> reporter: sounds like you have an agreement, and he's not on board. >> we have no agreement with the president. >> reporter: senator lindsey graham and other lawmakers at the white house to brief trump, sources tell abc news when the president learned the plan would restore protections from immigrants from haiti and several african countries, his response, why are we having all these people from expletive countries come here. the reaction, eli ja cummings calling the president's comments unforgivable. senator richard blumenthal on msnbc. >> this remark by the president of the united states smacks of blatant race im, the most odious racism, masquerading poorly as immigration policy.

>> reporter: a major setback for talks to protect nearly 800,000 young immigrants brought to the u.s. as children from deportation. lawmakers appear to be pushing ahead. >> we have an agreement that we're -- the bipartisan group i'm talking about, that we're shopping among our colleagues now. >> reporter: earlier in the week trump said he would sign whatever lawmakers could agree to, but he has one firm condition, no deal without funding for his wall on the u.s./mexico border. >> we need the wall. we have to have the wall for security purposes. >> reporter: the white house did not deny the reports on trump's comments saying the president is fighting for permanent solutions to make the country stronger welcoming immigrants who, quote, contribute, grow the economy and assimilate. maggie and kendis. >> the white house briefing will be interesting to watch today. thanks to you. stunning images in the meantime of the mudslides in california are highlighting the power unleashed by mother nature. in montecito, crews remained in a search for 40 missing people. at least 17 deaths have now been

confirmed. the victims range in age from 3 to 89 years old. a house of worship was anything but a sanctuary from the disaster. this is the inside of a chapel in montecito. the mudslide left chairs piled in the middle of the church. and to the southeast in burbank, the torrential rain sent this mudslide and car sliding down a road, the side of a hill. the owner is just happy that he made it through the ordeal. >> look how high the water came up. barely made it out. rocks flowing. mud flowing everywhere. barely made it out. >> and the storm that caused those devastating mudslides in california is now hitting the east coast. >> yeah. let's check in with accuweather's julia widen to tell us about it. >> kendis, maggie we're talking about a major storm that's going to be impacting the northeast as we go through friday and saturday. for the i-95 corridor, the biggest issue is the locally heavy rain. we could see some spots that

will receive up to 3 inches of that heavy rain potentially causing flooding, not just on the roadways but also when it comes to your small streams and rivers. those have been iced up recently, that will cause some big issues. a changeover from rain to ice to snow in the interior northeast as we go through friday night into saturday. all of that will clear out very quickly on sunday as the chill arrives. here's how much snow we are expecting. locally could see up to 18 inches. kendis and maggie? >> wow. 18 inches in the watertown area. they're used to it up there. thank you. the new york city pipe bombing suspect has made his first court appearance. when asked to enter a plea, he said at this moment, not guilty. he's accused of setting off a pipe bomb in a subway passage at the port authority bus terminal. he was the only person seriously injured in the december 11th attack. in san francisco, yet another swimmer has been bitten by a sea lion. the victim's friend says they

were swimming at the aquatic park when the sea lion latched onto her friend and tried to drag her under the water. the woman was taken to the hospital but was not seriously injured. it's the fourth such attack since december. swimmers are encouraged to stay in pairs and keep a watchful eye. consumer news now. chrysler plans to invest more than $1 billion to modernize its plant in michigan. moving thousands of jobs from mexico. the plant will add 2500 new jobs. the company also says it will pay 60,000 of its u.s. employees a reported bonus of $2,000 each. the company credits the moves with president trump's recent tax code overhaul. meantime, if you drive a 2006 ford ranger pickup truck, ford is urging you to stop driving it. the automaker is now blaming a second death on a defective takata air bag. ford says dealers are prepared to come to you to get the vehicle and even provide loaners until the problem is fixed. about 3,000 are at risk. of course we know saudi arabia enters the 19th century

we're seeing this morning just a few of the many faces behind this year's deadly flu outbreak. a mother of two has died outside of boston along with a toddler and a 21-year-old aspiring physical trainer. >> the family of 51-year-old jenny chen says she thought she was battling a bad cold when she went to the hospital but then only two days later, she died. her husband is still in shock saying she was so healthy. >> she had the flu. and she also developed a bacterial infection. and it just really was severe and caused severe pneumonia. >> meanwhile, it's so bad in some areas alabama's declared a state of emergency. due to the flu outbreak. >> with the virus spreading so quickly across the country there are steps to take to protect yourself especially at work. here's t.j. holmes. >> reporter: with flu fear spreading across the country. >> we're told it could be a
