live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> helplessly watching their home burn. all a san jose family could do is record this cell phone video as flames ripped through their apartment overnight. thank you for joining us, i'm natasha zouves. kristen sze will be in later today. this was on rancho drive near capital expressway and monterey road. that's where we find abc news reporter matt keller with the story. matt? >> reporter: natasha, check out the damage. see five of the eight units were destroyed. fire cause investigators have been here checking out the building, they haven't reached any conclusions yet. it is amazing no one was hurt. flames shot up to the sky in san jose this morning. 12:29 a.m. was the first 911

call. firefighters arrived to find huge flames eating away at one of the eight unit apartment buildings in the middle of a large complex on ranch o drive near monterey road. firefighters advanced to three alarms within minutes of arrival. this family watched it all apartment frall happen from their apartment across the way capturing video on their cell phone. what did it feel like? >> fireball. >> reporter: the timing couldn't have been worse. >> downstairs unit in this building in the front. >> reporter: a fire like this in the middle of the night while most people are sleeping can often turn tragic. kenny and his family barely escaped the flames leave almost everything behind. >> not much. my phone is still working, that's a good thing, to get it out and my car keys. >> reporter: amazingly, no one was hurt in the fire. all 16 residents including five kids and some pets, were accounted for. firefighters and neighbors say some good samaritans like juan and his uncle banged on doors and windows waking everyone up and making sure no one was left

behind. >> we started knocking on people's windows, getting the fire extinguishers and trying to calm the flames down and then before -- before -- before the firefighters came, he made sure that everyone was out. >> banging on doors, getting other people out, that saved lives. >> reporter: the red cross was here. they're helping some of the people out by putting them up in hotels. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. that no matter what the color of our skin, or the place of our birth, we are all created equal by god. >> do you think he's a racist? >> every sign is that he speaks like a racist, he brings up those fears. >> civil rights icon the reverend jesse jackson accusing president trump of being racist and the fallout continues. for mr. trump's comments about haiti during a meeting with congressional leaders. today mr. trump signed a proclamation honoring the legacy of dr. martin luther king jr.

the president is now reacting and we're hearing from a top democrat who participated in that white house meeting. abc news reporter kenneth motin tells us more from washington, d.c. >> reporter: president trump reacting to his reported use of a vulgar slur during an oval office meeting with lawmakers who are working on an immigration deal. multiple sources tell abc news the president was angry when he learned the deal would include protections for immigrants from african countries and haiti reportedly saying "why are we having all these people from expletive countries come here?" this morning trump tweeted "the language used by me at the daca meeting was tough but this was not the language used." another tweet, "never said anything derogatory about haitians other than haiti is obviously a very poor and troubled country. never said take them out. made up by dems." the one democrat in the oval office meeting called the president's denial a lie. >> it is not true. he said these hateful things and he said them repeatedly. it was a heartbreaking moment. >> thank you very much, great

honor. thank you. >> reporter: days after trump welcomed the norwegian prime minister, sources say the president suggested the u.s. should bring in more immigrants from countries like norway. trump's tweets came more than 12 hours after the white house did not deny the offensive comments saying the president want do welcome immigrants who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation. fallout overseas and at home. haitian-american and gop congresswoman mia love called the comments unkind, divisive, elitive anist and fly in the fa our nation's values. lawmakers work on a bipartisan deal to protect the d.r.e.a.m.ers and boost border security. trump tweeted calling a possible senate deal, quote, a big step backwards. kenneth motin, abc news washington. this morning the mayor of london says president trump is not welcome in the city, while pursuing what he calls a divisive agenda. this comes after the president canceled his visit to london. on twitter last night, trump said he will not be at the opening of the new u.s. embassy

there and criticized the president obaobama administration for selling the embassy only to build a new one. people in london will still be able to take a selfie with the president. mada madame tussauds moved his figure outside of it. some with cadaver dogs are back out searching this morning for those still missing following the deadly mudslides in southern california. the grueling effort began again this morning. hundreds slogging through mud and debris for a fourth day looking for survivors. at least five people are still unaccounted for in the devastating update community near montecito. searchers are holding out hope they'll find those missing still alive. >> hear stories from around the world where people have been missing for eight days, nine days and were found alive. we're hoping we're going to find those people. those people are out here working very hard to try to make that happen. >> the death toll from the powerful storm now stands at 17. officials say those force td to flee their homes will likely not be allowed to return until

evacuation orders are lifted and that could be another two weeks. the woman attacked by a sea lion is out of the hospital this morning. we first told you asbout this attract at san francisco's aquatic park yesterday midday. a sea lion bit irene chan while she was swimming. she was able to make it back to shore and people helped her. the fourth sea lion attack since december. organizers are still deciding whether conditions will be ideal for the maverick surfing contest next thursday. it will definitely not be running on monday. locals around half moon bay are getting ready in case. a storm in the pacific is predicted to bring big waves. 24 of the world's elite surfers are standing by for official word. last time mavericks was held was in 2016. the event did not happen last year because the former organizers went bankrupt. we should mention this year is the first year that women can participate. about time. in the last hour, tesla went public with its highly anticipated model 3 sedan. the company's palo alto showroom is one of the two places in

california where you can get behind the while and maybe kick the tires. eager customers, though, are still facing some big production delays. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harrington is live at the tesla showroom in palo alto for us. hey there, alyssa. >> reporter: natasha, it's hard to believe some of these people put down deposits on this car before they knew what it looked like. today they're getting a chance to see it, to open the doors, to sit inside, touch the steering wheel, and get a taste of what it's like behind the wheel. >> i have put my order in for one. i've been frustrated i couldn't see one. >> reporter: sandy was one of the first people in line outside the tesla showroom at stanford shopping center in palo alto, one of two locations in the state giving the public an up close and personal look at the electric car. she ordered one eight months ago and for the first time saw what she paid for up close. >> i like it. i like it. i think it's going to be interesting that there is nothing on the dashboard except the screen. that is going to be a new concept for somebody my age. >> reporter: people can sit inside, touch the interior, and

see the features. but actually sitting in your very own model 3 could take time. more than half a million people are on the wait list and delivery could take up to a year and a half. people i talked to tell me it's worth the wait. >> i put my name on the list two years ago. and first chance i've had to say it. i didn't think it'd be this good looking. it's a great looking car. >> it's no problem because they don't even have some of the features i want yet. they're not manufacturing the dual motor yet. which they will, i think, second quarter this year. so by the time they get all the features i want, why, that will be just about the right time i'll be ordering it. >> reporter: and that last man i talked to told me the first thing he wants to do when he finally gets his car is take a road trip across the country to visit family on the east coast. i should let people know even though you can come by and see the car and sit inside it, there are no test drives happening today. reporting live in palo alto,

elissa harrington, abc 7 news. >> i wonder how many charges that will take to get across the country. thank you so much, i appreciate it. new at 11:00, heavy fog delayed commuters heading into san francisco this morning. abc 7 news was at the ferry building where the ferry was running about ten minutes late. you can see why. the dense fog shrouding the bay. and also new at 11:00, from san francisco, this sink hole opened up near our studios. police directed drivers around the sinkhole at broadway and davis street this morning. crews from san francisco public works and water department are working on a cause and a fix. the federal government is giving san francisco more funding this year to fight ho homele homelessness. the "sf gate" reports the county will receive $41.5 million in homelessness grants this year. that's about $9 million more than it received last year. federal grants make up a small portion of the $300 million that san francisco spends on homelessness every year. if you haven't made plans for the three-day weekend yet, we have got you covered. how you can honor dr. martin

that determines what you see at the top of the screen when you sign in. abc 7 news anchor jessica castro explaining why the company is making that move. >> hi, that taush scnatasha. you may have noticed a difference in your facebook feed. the company says it's now prioritizing posts from your friends, your families and groups over post from publishers and brands. they say it's all in an effort to make your time on social media a bit more meaningful. in fact, ceo mark zuckerberg says the move will boost the wellbeing of users, but he expects people will now spend less time on facebook. >> the idea is to try and focus more on bringing people together by trying to put more emphasis on facilitating more meaningful social interactions between people. and the way we do that in ranking is to value things like commenting or writing a long comment more, and valuing things like how long we might think you -- how long we think you might watch a video for less. >> facebook saying quality over quantity. sounds pretty altruistic.

this is a heads up for parents. starting today google phasing out parental controls on its chrome web browser. google says that new internet supervision features are in the works for later in the year. in the meantime, check out google's new family link program for android devices. gm and san francisco-based cruise automation are giving us a glimpse into the very near future. that's a driverless car with no steering wheel and no pedals. they want to get the new cars on the road next year. the plan is to have them work in a taxi-like service somewhere in the u.s. of course, this will need to pass safety tests and get approval from the federal government before that happens. certainly looks unusual. and happy friday to you, congratulations to those of you who are going to be enjoying a long weekend. even if you don't have mlk day off, it could be a great opportunity to spend time honoring the civil rights icon. my abc 7 mornings co-anchor reggie aqui teamed up with partners at hoodline. >> two hoodline weekend picks center around dr. martin luther
