>> announcer: good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." it's saturday, january 13th. good morning and thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. meteorologist frances dinglasan is in for lisa. hi, frances. >> hi, chris. we're starting off with dense, patchy fog in some areas. you can see that with live doppler 7, socked in through parts of the north bay and east bay. as we look from emeryville, we see lots of blue skies as well. here is how the 12-hour day planner works out. areas of fog this morning with most temperatures in the 40s, a few 50s along the coast. mostly sunny for everyone by lunchtime. and then this afternoon, look for mild temperatures, in the 60s for most everyone. even upper 60s in a few locations inland. high clouds move in this afternoon to this evening. we will see a pleasant night.

tomorrow, slightly warmer. then get ready for some rain. it may move in as early as monday. i'll have those details coming up, chris. >> frances, thank you. a warning this morning after on assault on a typically safe trail. walnut creek police are on the lookout for the attacker who attacked a woman on the iron horse trail in walnut creek. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs has the story and surveillance image that officers want you to see. >> reporter: investigators want to talk with the man seen in this surveillance photo. he may be the person who attacked a woman who attempted to sexually assault her on thursday night around 5:30. >> she was pushed to the ground and dragged a short distance from the trail. >> reporter: it happened near the whole foods at south broadway and newell avenue. police say this is the area where the attack happened. it is dark and there are lots of bushes.

the main trail, however, is lighted and people tell me they're surprised the attack happened here. >> we walk this stretch of the trail all the time. so that's quite upsetting. we don't often hear of things like that around here. >> reporter: police say the man tried to kiss the woman and made threats during the attack. >> the intent was clear that it was sexually assault motivated. >> reporter: for some reason he stopped and ran north on broadway. the woman suffered from scrapes and bruises. >> we've done this trail at lunchtime, it seems fine and safe. wouldn't think twice about walking it at lunchtime. >> reporter: police say you should think twice before walking alone on the trail. >> if this individual had the audacity to do this, there's no doubt he'll do it again. >> reporter: if you recognize this man, contact east bay regional park district police. in walnut creek, katie utehs, abc 7 news. 49ers linebacker reuben foster is out of jail. he was arrested in alabama. he was charged with second degree marijuana possession. he's an alabama native.

he just finished his rookie season with the niners. the team issued a statement last night saying they're aware of the matter and are gathering the relevant facts. a pedestrian was hit and killed by a berkeley city vehicle at channing way and fulton street yesterday afternoon. a city worker was behind the wheel of the vehicle when the accident happened. investigators say it was traveling at just 15 miles per hour. to avoid a conflict of interest, the highway patrol has been asked to investigate the incident. the 70-year-old victim was a berkeley resident. her name has not been released. we have new developments about a transgender deejay and activist who was killed in san francisco. this morning police are looking for the killer after releasing this mug shot. abc 7 news reporter dion lim has more. >> reporter: everywhere you turn here in san francisco's tenderloin, reminders of anthony "bubbles" torres and his killing last september. news of an arrest warrant for the suspect wanted in his murder

provides little comfort to those who knew him best. >> it's just upsetting. it was a terrible thing. the guy was amazing. >> reporter: standing across from the new century strip club, it's not hard to find someone whose life was touched by the transgender activist and artist. >> every time you walked past him, it was like walking through a rainbow. he was magical. >> reporter: more than five months since the murder, on the week that would have been bubble's 45th birthday. police released this photo of the suspect, hieu trung nguyen, a 30-year-old man and a resident of the city. >> hopefully we can get this guy quickly. >> relief and actually pride about sfpd making progress and our district attorney's office making progress. >> reporter: a $15 million bail is a start. but there's much work to be done. >> yes, and i'll be more happier if they can arrest that suspect. >> we're calling for law enforcement agencies statewide to make this a priority.

to bring this killer to justice. >> reporter: abc 7 news is told nguyen is a flight risk which accounts for such a high bail. they are encouraging anyone with information to speak out. in san francisco, dion lim, abc 7 news. tuesday's deadly mudslides in montecito were in part to blame by the thomas fire. that burned 282,000 acres. officials have declared it 100% contained. the thomas fire started back on december 4th and is the largest wildfire in state history. investigators still don't know how that fire started. some residents plan to protest at richmond city hall today against the relocation of a methadone treatment center. the clinic, run by b.a.r.t. programs, wants to move from cutting boulevard in richmond to a larger facility with a bigger waiting room. one person who lives near the proposed facility says richmond police are called to the current center four times a week.

>> the majority of the calls were for, you know, theft and assault and disturbance of the peace. oh, yes, are we going to fight it. with every inch of my being. >> richmond officials say the city has no role in the relocation proposal but they will eventually have to decide whether to issue a land use permit for the new location. this year's severe influenza outbreak has claimed the lives of 42 californians, 19 of them bay area residents. at the same time last year the state recorded just nine deaths. health officials warn people who have not been vaccinated for the flu to do so as soon as possible. a flu that affects dogs has been spreading fast through the south bay, forcing many doggie day cares and kennels to temporarily close to keep it contained. abc 7 news reporter jeanine de la vega visited one of the dog care facilities that's been impacted.

>> reporter: willow, a playful yellow labrador, started coughing as she went to doggie day-care. the staff there immediately sent her to the veterinarian. >> i'm a nurse myself and at the hospital we're crazy with the flu patients and it's a big concern. now we came here and now my dog has the flu. it's disconcerting, because it's serious. >> reporter: it's difficult to initially detect canine flu because the symptoms don't show up until a few days later. dr. dave reed owns a dog day-care and animal hospital. he's treating many dogs. >> i'm going to say 20 at this point. dr. johnson who is over there right now administering to them, had two more positive cases today. so this really is a severe problem. >> reporter: many kennels and dog fair facilities in the area closed because of the outbreak. at dr. dave's, signs are posted alerting owners of the problem.

dr. dave's is shutting down his doggie day-care for at least a week. when it reopens, they will only take dogs that have been vaccinated. the vaccine is a series of two shots taken a few weeks apart. it then takes a couple of weeks for the protection to work. willow is now on antibiotics and will avoid contact with other dogs. >> we'll keep her at home and, you know, take good care of her. >> reporter: most dogs recover but in rare cases the flu can lead to pneumonia and death. in san jose, jeanine de la vega, abc 7 news. a good samaritan who saved a woman from being hit by caltrain in sunnyvale said he did what any responsible person would do. walter wilson pulled the woman from the tracks on thursday evening. seconds later a train slammed into the car, pushing it 100 feet and flipping it into the air. wilson says what he did was humane, not heroic. >> there are people who are heroes who save lives every day

and put their life on the line every day. what i did, i think most people would have done if they had had the constitution to think that maybe somebody might be in that car. >> wilson says the driver was dazed but otherwise uninjured. he says she was thankful for his good deed, saving her life. oakland city officials will consider moving a bike share station after residents complained. "the chronicle" reports a new ford go bike station was installed on thursday near the rock ridge neighborhood near a memorial honoring the 1991 oakland firestorm. these are go bikes from another bike share location. the rock ridge community planning chairman says some people didn't think it was a good idea to put the bike racks in front of the memorial. meteorologist frances dinglasan is here tracking the accuweather forecast for us. we see some fog throughout the

florida, named shane missler, opted for the one-time lump sum payment technologic payment, totaling $281 million. he plans to manage his finances, help his family, and have some fun along the way. happening today, a town hall meeting for fire victims in sonoma county. federal, state, and local leaders will update the public on recover efforts since the october wildfires. they'll also discuss some of the rebuilding efforts planned for this year. the town hall meeting will take place at the santa rosa high school gymnasium from 10:00 until noon. the world's biggest wave surf competition could return on tuesday. the world surfing league announced the conditions are looking pretty good. an official announcement should come later today. organizers originally considered monday but believe conditions will be too rough. 30 of the world's elite surfers are currently standing by for

livermore at 47. mt. tam, a little bit of a breeze in the higher elevations. for most of the us, it's calm ae surface. the fog will clear quickly. sunny and milder this afternoon with above average temperatures. and then this wet pattern starts on monday, and it looks like a wet workweek. i'll show you that in a bit. we have the fog through the central valley, spilling into the strait and the delta. by lunchtime it's all gone. highs today will be well above average. in the 60s for everybody. san francisco, 61. santa rosa, up to 65. oakland, 62. san jose, 64. there could be a few thin, high clouds passing through. now, tomorrow night into tomorrow morning, we will see a little bit of fog once again, with overnight lows in the 40s. and even some 30s in the north bay. some 50s along the coast. it will be even warm tomorrow afternoon. now, this is abc 7's exclusive

storm impact scale. get ready for the next storm on monday. it ranks 1 out of 5, so a light storm. monday into tuesday, light to moderate rain. we could see an inch or even more in some north bay spots. i want to show you the latest forecast animation, the timing of the rain has been a little iffy. sometimes it comes earlier during monday, sometimes later. right now, by noon it looks like mostly dry for everyone except parts of the north bay. if you are participating in some of those marches, grab a light rain jacket. you might need it throughout the day. the heavier rain, the darker green here moves in through tuesday. that pink and white, that is snow in the sierra for tuesday. and rain amounts again less than half an inch for most areas, it could be more in parts of the north bay like cloverdale. chances of rain throughout the week, wet monday through friday. just be prepared for that and have the umbrellas handy, and the raincoat. here is the accuweather

college football broadcasts and his catch phrase, "whoa nellie." he worked for abc sports for 40 years, truly an icon. jackson was 89 years old. illinois state police have a suspect in custody after an incident involving a public gunman on a greyhound bus. kenosha county deputies chased the bus down, eventually stopping it nearly the illinois/wisconsin border. all 50 passengers are safe. authorities did not elaborate on the incident. the bus was headed from milwaukee to chicago. new details about last year's mass shooting in las vegas. the deadliest shooting in modern u.s. history. a federal judge unsealed more than a dozen search warrant affidavits yesterday. we now know the fbi was looking into suspicious e-mail exchanges two months before the attack. the shooter, stephen paddock, may have sent one of the e-mails. one message read, "for a thrill try out bump fire ars with 100 round magazine."

58 people were killed in the shooting in august. this morning, police in want to know why a man killed his mother after he lost a video game. the situation escalated thursday night near modesto. investigators say 28-year-old matthew nicholson yelled out in anger after losing a game. they say he grabbed a gun and began shooting. one bullet struck his mother in the head, killing her. h his sister, devastated, spoke to reporters off camera. >> my mom was a wonderful person and loved her children. this house has always been open to friends and family. and it's always been a family atmosphere. >> absolutely heartbreaking. police say nicholson's father wrestled the gun away from his son. the suspect got in a car and tried to drive away but officers stopped and arrested him without incident. this morning investigators are looking into a problem that

occurred on a flight from palm springs to san francisco. alaska airlines' flight was diverted to los angeles after pilots reported smoke in the cockpit. the airbus a-320 landed safely at l.a.x. passengers were rebooked to other flights to sfo. a major storm that carved a path of destruction across the country is moving out this morning. behind it, a rush of cold air. abc news senior meteorologist rob marciano is tracking it all for us. >> another massive winter storm slamming the northeast, creating dangerous conditions from tennessee valley through new england. outside nashville yesterday, a massive pileup involving dozens of semi trucks and cars, shutting down westbound lane of i-40, nearly killing walter kohlor and his wife. >> they hit us in the back, then another semi truck that couldn't stop smashed us from the front. we got hit from the back and the

front. >> overnight, heavy snow creating whiteout conditions on the roads, causing multiple accidents. near pittsburgh, rising temperatures, melting snow and relentless rain causing flooding and overtaking roadways. this video showing what an ice jam can do in upstate new york, rising quickly before the ice flows downstream. a blast of arctic air sends temperatures plummeting over 30 degrees. >> and that was rob marciano reporting. now to those devastating mudslides in santa barbara county. the death toll has grown to 18 with the victims as young as 3 years old. rescuers are searching through mud-covered neighborhoods. abc reporter marci gonzalez has more. >> reporter: crews are out relentlessly searching. >> trying to peel away the

layers to get to the voids. >> reporter: time is running out to find survivors but they are not giving up hope just yet. >> we continue to operate in a rescue mode. we have completed the primary searches. >> reporter: more than 1,200 first responders navigating dangers in the debris. >> how far down the wash are you? >> reporter: there are layers of quicksand-like mud. >> this is the worst i've seen. >> reporter: officials sayve home has been searched. in one they found the 18th victim of the mudslides. among the victims, friends of emil garcia. >> you can see my car. >> reporter: he says his own life was narrowly spared as he drove on the 101 freeway tuesday morning. >> it was a wall of mud and debris coming down. i stepped on the brakes. next thing i know, i get hit on the right side.

a tree trunk pinned me down. >> reporter: garcia crawled out of the window of his suv, wading through waist-high mud through safety. >> we consider ourselves lucky we were able to escape and get out of it alive. >> reporter: so very lucky. you can see his range rover still submerged there. we're told this interstate will remain closed indefinitely. marci gonzalez, abc news, montecito, california. a mural that highlights a west oakland community made its debut yesterday. city leaders including oakland mayor libby schaaf attended the unveiling of the mural featuring superheroes at the 580 underpass at west street. it was designed by students at nearby hoover elementary school and painted by community artists. organizers dedicated it to antonio ramos, an artist who was shot and killed while working on the mural in that neighborhood two years ago. >> he was excited. he had tenacity. he had passion.

and he had fervor for the power of public art in communities. and he was a part of that. we bring that spirit into this wall. >> ramos was helping a community group with bringing that mural to life. the group pairs professional muralists like ramos with local students to design and paint the works of art. in marin county, it was a scene bound to put a smile on the face of anyone who loves coho salmon. they returned home to spawn in a most unusual way. >> reporter: if you're in the mood for a little fishing, you may never have seen fishing done this way before. >> you've got to be sneaky and quick. and you can't mind getting wet. >> reporter: brian friel of the california department of fish and wildlife never assumed that all biology experiments take place in a lab. in this case it was in a parking lot. coho salmon returning to nature via a hatchery intervention.

>> i don't want salmon to go extinct. it's a beautiful fish. they belong here. they've been here in the past. >> reporter: that's manford kittle. he's with the california department of fish and wildlife. he helped design a three-year experiment and trial to save the endangered coho population in redwood creek. for these coho, this is a homecoming. they were pulled out of the creek when they were this big in the summer of 2015. they've spent their entire lives in a hatchery, never been in the ocean. it's a matter of survivability. you're making life easy for them. >> in a way we are. the 200 fish we collected, if we had left them in the creek, chances are one or two or three would have returned. >> that is 894. >> reporter: today volunteers returned almost 200 coho back to the creek, one at a time. >> we're gently lowering them into the water to give them an opportunity to acclimate to the temperature and the surroundings. >> reporter: from here that's -- they'll

martin luther king jr. day isn't until monday but san francisco's bay view neighborhood is honoring the civil rights leader today. starting at 9:00 this morning, there will be a celebration at bay view park at third street and carroll avenue. this is video from a previous march. there will be live performances, swimming, lunch, and raffles at the park. the event is free and open to the public. so how's the weather shaping up for that march? >> my goodness, it will be gorgeous today. warmer than average. we'll see 60s this afternoon. but right now still dealing with thick fog in parts of the north and east bay. a live shot in san rafael. i'll let you know when the rain will arrive. also next, the warriors begin a five-game road trip in

say it's a long time coming. >> reporter: in the middle of san francisco bay, a new restaurant is taking shape in the unlikeliest of places. >> it was a big risk. but we wanted to do it. i believe if you're going to do something, do it right. >> reporter: meet mersea on treasure island. it's a comfort casual concept. it's led by misan boyce and her partner. >> mersea means island oasis. we're hoping that's what they take away from it, a little relaxation. >> reporter: it's not just about the food. there's the putting green, bocce court, all meant to keep visitors at ease as they soak in the views from the san francisco skyline. the restaurant was constructed out of 13 recycled shipping containers. the attention to detail is incredible. for instance, these dining tables were made out of wood from an old bowling alley right here on treasure island. mersea is also partnering with the treasure island homeless development initiative to provide training for low income and formerly homeless residents. veteran michael bartel was one of the first chosen. >> i have meaning every day, i

of the north and east bay. but things will quickly change. visibility is still pretty low in santa rosa, about a quarter mile. eighth of a mile in fairfield. concord has picked up to five miles. i'll show you a live shot in the area. you can see 680 this time in walnut creek, much improved. and it will quickly clear. santa rosa is currently 39 degrees. lots of 40s out there. concord already up to 50. livermore at 47 degrees. and as we look over the bay bridge, you see some blue skies starting to break through already. currently it's 49 degrees in san francisco. oakland, 50. san jose, 43. as we look from the east bay hills towards the bay, you see some of those low clouds. that will quickly dissipate. we're going to have to deal with patches of dense morning fog in the next few hours. then it's going to be a sunny and milder afternoon, above average warmth today, and

tomorrow will be even warmer. a wet pattern starts on monday. we've got a very wet workweek ahead. it i'll show you that as well. the forecast animation of the fog shows fog through the central valley and into the strait. notice how quickly it goes away. by lunchtime, plenty of sunshine for everyone. this afternoon, look for temps in the 60s. san francisco, 61. oakland, 62. san jose really nice at 64 degrees. a great day to do anything outdoors today and tomorrow. tomorrow morning, overnight lows will be mainly in the 40s with the exception of san francisco, half moon bay near 50. santa rosa still cool at 38. we'll start off with a little bit of fog again. then we'll see lots of sunshine in the afternoon. and deplenjoy the sunshine whilu can, because rain is on its way. here is abc 7's exclusive storm impact scale. we rank each storm 1 to 5. on monday through tuesday, the

storm will be a 1, light to moderate rain. most areas getting less than half an inch of rain. parts of the north bay may get up to an inch or more. here is forecast animation of how the rain turns out. monday afternoon, we're only going to see rain through parts of the north bay, looking dry for marches in san francisco through san jose. you can see the darker green and even the pink and white. that indicates snow in the sierra. then tuesday night, it starts to clear out. however, we are expecting, again, up to an inch or more in parts of the north bay like cloverdale and ukiah. everywhere else, less than half an inch for the most part. the accuweather seven-day forecast, sunny and warm today and tomorrow. perfect to get outdoors. and then scattered showers monday into tuesday. more rain. our next system may arrive as early as wednesday afternoon and evening. thursday, hold your hats, hang
