should see some light showers move into the north bay by the afternoon. so tomorrow, 1:30, the sonoma coast could see showers, then hung up in the north bay. we have not seen this in quite some time. by end the of the week, we're talking a real january feel to the air with cold systems and significant snow in the sierra nevadas. you want to stay tuned for my forecast. well, there was also a high-surf advisory in effect until late this afternoon. you can see people still braving the waters at about noontime. waves along the north bay coast topped 20 feet. and despite the big waves, the maverick surf contest will not be held tuesday. the window to hold the contest will remain open through february. a deputy shot a man who was

armed with a barbecue skewer. it happened on the north side of the lake. a person at a home called the sheriff's office saying someone else in the residence was acting bizarrely. deputies got there and confronted the suspect. >> they went to the front door, a man answered the door with a large metal barbecue skewer. he lunged at one of our deputies. he was stopped with a service weapon and the suspect was wounded. >> the suspect is being treated at a hospital in reno. the immigration fight is heating up as well as the courts. administration is once again taking daca applications. abc 7 news reporter carlos saw sato is in the newsroom for what this means for d.r.e.a.m.ers. >> the daca program gives legal

status to undocumented immigrant brought to the u.s. as children. the government is not taking new applicants, only those who have already applied and need to renew. the latest action is a step in the right direction says one, but the legal fight is far from over. the past few months have been uncertain times for undocumented immigrants like yvonne. >> it's a limbo state. >> reporter: his parents brought him to the u.s. from mexico when he was 10. having graduated from uc berkley, he is one of those covered under the daca program started by president obama. last year, the trump administration announced it would be ending the program. >> i'm going to see some of my friends be persecuted. >> reporter: a federal judge ordered the administration to resume daca, and they've complied. as of last night, the government

once again began accepting applications. but there is a bigger fight in washington. negotiations over a comprehensi comprehensi comprehensive immigration bill fell apart this week. the president tweeted the daca program is going to fall apart. and the issue was addressed during a town hall meeting. >> the first priority has to be to present the daca kids. the judge did his part by showing that the trump administration doesn't have the right to take away something that has already been promised. >> reporter: for d.r.e.a.m.ers caught in the middle, they're holding onto hope that a bipartisan bill reaches the president's desk. >> the immigration system, echb -- everyone should be responsible. not just democrats or republicans. >> the work at capitol hill may be overshadowed by president

trump's alleged remarks about haiti and countries in africa. late this afternoon, the president said he is not a racist, however not echveryone agreed with him. >> reporter: no end to the firestorm over president trump reportedly using an expletive that many describe as racist. >> do you think president trump is a racist? >> i think he is a racist. >> reporter: civil rights activist and congressman john lewis responding to accounts on thursday about a propose yes, ma'am -- immigration deal, the president saying why are we having all these people from expletive countries coming here. the president has denied makes those comments. now some of his closest supporters deny he ever said them at all >> are you saying the president did not use the word that has been widely reported. >> i'm telling you he did not use that word and it's a gross

misrepresentation. >> reporter: they are trying to seal a deal with democrats to spare hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. they say it should be a broader part of funding the government. brian clark, abc news, new york. americans celebrate the achievements of dr. martin luther king jr. abcnews reporter lilian kim asked the question, where do we go from here. she joins us live now. >> reporter: dozens turned out for the secelebration at grace cathedral. it's more important than ever to remember the words of dr. martin luther king jr. he died 50 years ago.

and here at grace cathedral many reflected on the current state of the country and a president who just a few days ago reportedly made disparaging remarks about haiti and african countries. despite the tone of the last year, now is not the time to be discouraged but to remember dr. king's words and act on them. >> i miss dr. king more than ever, because dr. king put forth a vision for us. and he also organized well enough to give a strategy as how to obtain that vision. i pray that somehow we today will begin to live into the idea. there is always that kernel of hope that wakes us up in the morning to make a better society, and i think, as that kernel of hope that king had, irrespective of how he felt at a given time, he kept going. he kept going, and i think

thanks for staying with us. here's something you don't see every day. a car stuck in the second story of a dental office. in santa ana earlier this mrning, witnesses say the driver was speeding. he hit the center median, launched into the air somehow, the car struck the second storey, starting a fire. it was in far enough that it got stuck. the driver got out of the car and started hanging from the building. they did rescue the driver and extracted a person inside. both had minor injuries.

police do believe the driver was on drugs. volunteers at a non-profit dog rescue group say it happened again after a car plowed into their shelter in oakland. abc news was at rocket dogs after a car plowed into the shelter. it happened around 3:00 this morning when all of the rescue dogs were inside the building. rocket dog volunteers patched up the hole in the fence so the dogs could enjoy the outdoors. >> we kind of put up these makeshift tents to make the space a little bit usable. it allows for the older, more senior dogs to come out and hang out an ill wi little bit. >> this marks the second time someone has driven into rocket dog's shelter. you're looking at what happened in april 2016 when a stolen van smashed into the fence. the game of color exhibit. and some areas of the bay

as the nation pauses to commemorate civil rights leader reverend martin luther king jr., this week, a new exhibit highlights players of color. it's on display at the san francisco main library featuring photography, and artifacts that tells the story of african-american players. it spans and '70s. we have an inspirational story from the east bay, about bicyclist joe shamly who at 83 years old proved it's never too late to complete a record. he finished his 500th ride to mt. diablo. you see him right near the

middle of the screen. he is making the grueling trek in every weather condition imaginable. rain, sleet, even snow. with the support of the mt. dead diablo cyclists he had a cake waiting at the top. a chilly day today. live doppler 7 showing you all the clouds, haze and fog. numbers were cool. 50s all around the bay area except at the coast. 65 degrees, it was 68 in gilroy. but san jose, lots of fog for much of the day. four-mile visibility in concord right now. as you widen the perspective, a lot of cloud cover in the pacific. several storm systems pushing their way into the bay area, eve o -- each one progress everly getting colder. numbers really didn't budge much, out of the low to mid-50s today. as a result, the low and high clouds really just didn't want

to budge, even though we're under a big rim dge of high pressure that has brought the stagnant air to a maximum. we're going to get some mixing tomorrow, but we're still under a spare the air alert. look for more fog tonight. showers for some of you in the north bay late tomorrow. but later in the day for everyone else, the overnight hours, they'll end early on tuesday then showers on thursday and friday. those are the showers that had bring perhaps a foot of snow into the sierra into next weekend. so the 19th spare the air alert. and we have our high surf advisory right on through tuesday, where some of these wave heights over20 feet. from from sonoma. very dangerous surf. another cool evening, but tomorrow as the system comes through, we'll mix out that fog.

it's a one on our storm impact scale. a weak system monday into tuesday, anywhere from a trace amount to a quarter inch. the north bay will see the most, upwards of a half inch. 3:30 tomorrow afternoon, as we get into the overnight hours here's where the bulk of the activity will shift. 3:00 tuesday morning. by your morn commuing commute, t the amounts. very light. a quick mover. just a trace in the south bay, maybe over a tenth in kn kno k w dough. saturday is dry and here is the next system on sunday. you can see the outlook is progressive, with several systems for the week ahead. highs tomorrow looking at about 60 in san francisco. 64 in san jose. and the accuweather seven-day
