thank you for joining us. we're starting with breaking news from san francisco. you're looking at live sky 7 right now. this is atd rescue under way to try to save this dog trapped on a cliff. this is happened at fort funston. you can see how steep this cliff is. this rescue worker has been trying to get a harness wrapped around this black and grade dapple dog and they've been struggling. the dog has tail wagging, has been on the cliffside for quite some time. the person has been trying to get a harness around him. the dog is struggling.

it looks like he a harness around the dog. you can see he is just working on the back side of that dog, trying to get it secured and getting that buckle around him. it's good to see the dog is cooperating. just a moment ago when we were watching this live picture before we started, the dog was really struggling for a moment and looked like it was panicking for a second. our picture is breaking up a little bit. we're taking a live look from sky7 so bear with us. there we go. 24e are going to try to hoist this dog. once again, this is fort funston in san francisco, as our picture is breaking up a little bit. we'll keep watching this from the news room. certainly a precarious situation. stay on top with the abc7 news app. looks like they have a good handle on it but we'll keep you updated. thank you for joining us.

our other top story. gunfire on a bay area freeway that happened early this morning on interstate 280 in san francisco. three people were shot. they drove themselves to the hospital. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson live at chp headquarters in san francisco with this developing story. >> reporter: good morning. chp says it's impossible to tell whether the shooting was targeted at this point. the victims were also inside a black escalade, five people inside, three suffered gunshot wounds. all are expected to survive. the glow of flares greeted early morning commuters trying to make their way south on 280 today. everybody was exited at lemany boulevard. >> we collected quite a bit of evidence from the scene, including shell casings. >> reporter: officers started receiving calls about the shooting at 2:50 this will morning. three people suffered gunshot wounds. the victims drove themselves to the hospital. >> the three parties that were

at the hospital, all suffered what would be deemed to be nonlife-threatening injuries. and some are, i believe one or two are still there for treatment now but will be released soon. >> investigators have already interviewed the shooting victims. >> they all indicated they did not see anything. they're not speaking to why they were shot at. >> reporter: officer vu williams says they don't know if this was a targeted shooting. currently, investigators have no information on the shooter's vehicle. >> it looks like it was vehicle-to-vehicle because where the shell casings were placed and landed. >> reporter: chp is asking anyone who saw anything to come forward. there are no cameras at this section of 280. 280 was shut down and reopened shortly before 7:00 a.m. this morning. >> tiffany, thank you. the abc7 app put out a push alert this morning.

find out news where you are by down loading the abc7 news app. last night officers heard several shots fired outside of the police station on city center drive and found an armed man asking police to shoot him. during the standoff, the suspect walked towards one of the officers who fired at him. this is new video just into our abc7 news room right now. you can see an active police activity and the suspect's condition has not yet been released. mike tracking a storm rolling in. >> we'll start with live doppler 7 to show you it's pretty quiet until you get into the coast me mendicino county. there could be a few random showers develop in the afternoon before the main event begins tonight and lasts through tomorrow morning.

it will start off moderate in the north bay and become light exiting the south bay. less than quarter of an inch in most areas. up to half an inch in the north bay will be pretty generous. we'll take a look at those coming up in about ten minutes. as far as other things happening today, it's our 18th winter spare the air alert. the coast including san francisco has poor air quality. no wood burning today. as you near the coast, high surf advisory. dangerous surf. breakers up to about 20 feet possible through 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. we'll have more on that storm and more coming in my accuweather seven-day forecast. more details where many people remain without water, power and gas. it's been two weeks since the deadly mudslides. part of highway 101 between ventura and santa barbara remains closed as crews try to removed trees, cars and mud. six days after the disaster, we are hearing from the white house on this for the first

time. quote, the president and first lady extend their deepest sympathies to the families affected, their appreciation for the first responders saving lives and their prayers for those who remain missing. want to get back to sky7 at fort funston. we have good news. looks like they managed to hoist the dog back. perhaps that's the dog's owner with the leash, getting onto flat ground speaking to crews. if you're familiar with this area, there are lots of dogs who are off leash. some people describe this as doggy heaven cruise managed to get a harness around the dog and managed to hoist him back up. you can see him, tail wagging. looks like a good end to this story. police in sunnyvale arrested a san jose man accused of moat lesing a teenager. 23-year-old henry reed is

charged with sending indecent matter to a minor, and it included inappropriate comments and touching the 17-year-old victim. police arrested him on friday. he has worked with minors as a part-time musician assistant in the past. if you know anything, you're urged to call sunnyvale police. president trump spoke publicly for the first time about controversial remarks he reportedly made about haiti and african countries and some critics call the president racist, which the president denies. >> reporter: president trump on defense. >> no, no, i'm not a racist. i am the least racist person you have ever interviewed. >> reporter: at his florida resort, the president denied he used a vulgar word to describe african nations. >> did you see what various senators in the room said about my comments? they weren't made. >> reporter: two republicans in

that oval office meeting said they did not recall the president using that term, but now a flat-out denial. >> i'm telling you he did not use that word, george, and i'm telling you it's a gross misrepresentation. >> i didn't hear and i was sitting no further away from donald trump at dick durbin. >> reporter: speaking in chicago today, the lone democrat in the room insist the president used an inappropriate phrase. >> i know what i heard. >> reporter: john lewis is firing back at the president. >> i think he is a racist. i don't think that's any way you can square what the president said with the words of martin luther king jr. >> reporter: the backlash comes as lawmakers try to hammer out a deal toll protect those so-called d.r.e.a.m.ers, undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. but president says democrats put a daca fix in jeopardy. >> honestly, don't think democrats want to make a deal. i think they talk about daca but they don't want to help the daca

people. >> reporter: democrats want protections for d.r.e.a.m.ers to be part of a deal to avoid a government shutdown but they're facing a time crunch. government ends friday. on martin luther king jr. day, 1200 signed up to ride the messable train. the train just pulled into the cal train station at fourth and king and from therele passengers are marching to yerba buena gardens. >> reporter: a big enthusiastic crowd packed the station in san jose this morning. people were handed their commemorative tickets for the martin luther king celebration train to san francisco. where they'll take part in the mlk day events at the yerba buena center for arts. >> equality for all people. >> we try to celebrate this beautiful day and remember the man that did, you know, things

for humanity. >> reporter: cal train says there were a big demand in tickets, the ride up the peninsula to san francisco. last year 950 people signed up for the trip. this year 1200 people signed up. >> now more than ever people are starting to realize the true legacy of martin luther king, his fight for racial equality and social justice. and i think the things that he fought for back in the '50s and '60s are things that we're still fighting for today. >> martin luther king jr.'s birthday. >> reporter: many people we spoke to today said the discourse in this country is becoming divisive. the message of martin luther king lost 50 years after his assassination. that's why this family drove from tracy to pass on a positive message to their kids. >> share a moment with our family, let them know how things were, how things are changing and hopefully things can continue to change. >> reporter: more events are planned through february. to more information, go to our website, abcnews.com. matt keller, abc7 news.

yesterday afternoon when the boat caught fire near the port. this morning we learned that a 42-year-old woman died. no word yet on why she died, whether it was from the fire itself or perhaps hypothermia in the water. 14 others are hurt. and people in hawaii are still rattled two days after the mistaken alert that a ballistic missile was incoming. the employee at hawaii's emergency management agency who sent out that alert has been reassigned. he had been trying to send out an internal alert but instead chose missile alert from the drop-down menu. the error wasn't corrected for 38 minutes. we're hearing the cdc is delaying its session on nuclear disaster preparedness to tackle the flu first. public health officials originally planned to meet in atlanta tomorrow to plan their response to a nuclear attack. they'll instead be talking about how this flu season is the deadliest in recent years. as of friday, 42 people under the age of 65 have died from the flu in california. now to today's morning

morning report. it marks the opening of a new restaurant in the middle of san francisco bay. the comfort casual spot on treasure island offers more than just food. there's a putting green, bocci court, unobstructed views of the san francisco skyline. it was made out of 38 shipping containers. no more photoshopped images. cvs announced it will stop touching up images for in-house and promotional displays by 2020. natural beauty will include a watermark called the cvs beautymark so people will know they're not photoshopped. a warning for travelers flying through one of the nation's busiest airports. some passengers may have been exposed to a highly contagious disease. i'm assuming those are not clouds. maybe there's a problem with the camera. meteorologist mike nic

at home.ld generate your own energy, or to save energy, unplug unused appliances. do your thing, with energy upgrade california. hi, everybody. you can see the multilayer of clouds out there, mid and high level clouds from the haze left over from from the fog. if you're following live doppler 7 on our app, you may notice some radar returns this afternoon. we'll be lucky if we get some sprungles because the air is really dry in the lower levels. the clouds will return today. it's the spare the air day. tonight is best chance for showers. i have some heavier storms, possibly really opening the storm door type? maybe next week. let's take a look at what's going on next week. you can see visibility around two to three miles in the inland

neighborhoods where we had the thickest fog. that's why temperatures in some neighborhoods still in the 40s like san ramone and brentwood and fairfield, clover dale, while everybody else is in the 50s. the greatest amount of sunshine is going to be aycross the sout bay heading into the afternoon hours. noon will be hazy but our brightest time for all of us and clouds will thicken with random sprinkles at 4:00. by 8:00 a shower or two and by midnight the showers start increasing, especially across the north bay. tomorrow, 47 to 52 degrees, even a little milder than it was this morning. notice the yellows and greens out there. that's some of the light to moderate rain we'll get barely out of the system because most of the energy is going to head to the north. we're going to get the tail end. kind of the leftovers, if you will. here's how it goes hour by hour from noon up to 4:00. you can see some random light showers to sprinkles coming in with that next batch of clouds.

notice how they fall apart during the evening commute. let's turn our attention up here to lake mendicino county. 2:00 it's in the north bay. deeper. by 4:00 it's starting to roll into the heart of the bay and it's also starting to break up. from 7:00 to 9:00 as it moves into the south bay, it kind of falls apart. by noon it's completely gone. let's take a look at the rain. if you're going to be out starting the commute at about 4:00, there may be measurable rain from navarro northward. by 7:00 will could be light to measurable rain along the coast from san francisco to half moon bay. overnight we'll see it fill in. the rain gets heavier, from san francisco/oakland northward. by the end of the commute tomorrow, some rain will reach the east bay and the south bay, but it will be very light. sue hall and i will be in here to get you through that. 1 today, 1 tomorrow, 1 thursday,

1 friday, and 1 sunday. that storm sunday looking a little stronger we'll keep an eye on that. if it pans out it could be a foot or two of snow up in the sierra. sky7 just got overhead. take a look at what's happening now. the march in honor of martin luther king jr. happening right now in san francisco. the celebration train started in san jose this is morning and pulled into the caltrain station at fourth and king. many joined and now marching to yerba buena gardens. around king and third right now in the city. many of these marchers say that today dr. king's message is more important than ever. and there are dozens of events happening today. we've posted them for you on our website, abcnews.com. we do want to get to this story. important for travellers. those who passed through chicago

o'hare international airport may have been exposed to measles. a passenger with a confirmed case of the highly contagious disease landed and boarded another train on wednesday. it passed through terminal five and one. if you traveled through that area, you want to get tested. measles can lead to pneumonia and spread easily through coughing. hosing off after a long day's work. the great work this four-legged hero is doing down in southern california.
