you can see at the bay bridge toll plaza and other areas are seeing dense fog. good morning on this tuesday, january 16th. you are never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. meteorologist mike nicco. >> i like that. >> not bad. >> my own hand gestures. cool. if you're heading out right now the roads are getting drier. if you're going to sleep in and be lazy and not leave for a couple hours the roads will be almost dry by then because the rain is ending. i'll keep the storm impact scale going through the morning commute possibly up to 10:00 because there will be pockets of light rain, less than a tenth of an inch, and it's going to be less slippery as you get deeper into the commute. if you look at the rain, the solid green, moving into the central valley and heading up into the mountains where it's turning to snow. behind it dense fog in the north bay and along the coast. visibility down to a mile in places like san rafael. my accuweather 12-hour planner it is damp and humid and mild this morning. look at that.

chp headquarters in martinez. amy? >> reporter: hi, reggie. we just got an update from the chp and they tell us they do think the driver who caused this accident was drunk and they think he has driven drunk before. they tell us officer martin landway, a motorcycle officer, he was the one who was injured. he wasn't on his motorcycle at the time. he was standing out on the median investigating another crash when this happened. investigators say a chevy trail blazer came along, hit the parked motorcycle and then one of the trucks involved in the first crash, that truck landed on officer landway. two cars trying to avoid the motorcycle now in the middle of the road also crashed. quite a chain reaction out there. this happened last night around 6:15 on eastbound highway 4 in concord. they released the name of the driver they believed was drunk. 52-year-old tammy walker of pittsburg. she has been booked on several charges including driving on a

suspended driver's license for a prior conviction. the officer has major injuries that are not life threatening, that he is expected to survive and to be okay. the chp says it would like to thank all of the citizens who stopped last night to render aid to officer lindway. reporting live in martinez, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. the driver charged in the christmas eve death of a highway patrol officer faces arraignment, charged with first-degree murder. prosecutors say the 22-year-old was drunk and driving more than 120 miles an hour down interstate 880 when he rear-ended a chp vehicle. the crash killed officer andrew camilleri. camilleri's partner, officer jonathan velasquez, was injured. camilleri had just graduated from the chp academy in march. the breaking news we're tracking, another false missile alert going out, this time in

japan. a short while ago the japanese national broadcaster nhk issued an on-air apology for issuing an alert claiming north korea had launched a ballistic missile very similar to what happened in hawaii over the past weekend. folks in japan that had this nhk app got an alert that looked like this on your screen and it told them to evacuate inside a building or go underground. again, the alert was false and coincidentally today the u.s. and canada plan to host a talk in vancouver to talk about the north korean nuclear threat, south korea, and also japan, are expected to participate. back to you. thanks, jessica. happening today the cdc is going to discuss this year's severe flu season. >> members will provide key information for public health professionals on how to reduce the spread of the flu. they will adjust to shortages and antiviral drugs because of how high the flu has been in some areas. experts say the worst may be yet to come. >> it's just a problem bug.

we hate it when the bug shows up. this year is one of those and we are probably going to see a lot of hospitalizations and deaths. >> the cdc is calling this year's spread an epidemic sweeping across nearly every state. there are 13 weeks remaining in the flu season. disgraced gymnastics dr. larry nassar will face victims in court. during a four-day sentencing hearing as many as 125 people will read impact statements. nassar will be sentenced for sexually assaulting the gymnasts he treated. it is not known if simone biles will be court. aly raisman has said she will not. this morning we're hearing from friends of a beloved tennis coach from san jose missing and presumed dead after a freak accident in new zealand. tyler nee was tandem skydiving when they plunged into the water. the new zealand herald reports the instructor was rescued but nee sunk into the lake.

friends are devastated. he was the varsity tennis coach and coached students on the peninsula. >> the kids would text him after a tournament to say guess how great i did, not because he was a coach but he was their friend. >> what students loved about him the most was how kind he was and how soft he was and how much of a patient person he was. >> nee's family is heading to new zealand in hopes of finding him. >> a big change for air bnb. the last phase after citywide crackdown takes effect today requiring all hosts to be registered with the city or have bookings canceled. penalties include a fine of $1,000 per day for violation. they did not come without a fight. air bnb and home away sued after the board of supervisors unanimously passed new rules in 2016. the case was settled last year. a wrestling accident leaves a teenager paralyzed.

it's hard to forget the crash over the weekend in orange county where a car hit a center median, flew into the air and slammed into the second story of a dentist's office. we showed you that surveillance video yesterday morning and you see there's a bus that drives by and barely misses the crash. now this footage comes from that bus released by the orange county transportation authority. here it is. watch really carefully. you're going to see the car, wau, launch into the air just before the bus is about to be at that exact point. police say the driver has been arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. some of our most dangerous visibility right in petaluma, down to a mile.

as we go into the weekend we're going to say good-bye to one storm and say hello to a stronger storm. here is a look at the south bay. around boulder creek, absolutely nothing falling elsewhere. still a lot of cloud cover even with the steadier rain moving away. in fact, let's talk about the other part of the country where it's still winter. look at that, snow down in houston once again, dallas, shreveport, monroe, places that don't get snow once a year if that, getting snow for the second time and it stretches all the way up to maine. so there may be delays. hazy, temperature 59 to 62. the haze will be humidity not poor air quality. tonight look at all that fog for the morning commute. 41 in santa rosa to about 51 in san francisco. so here we are from 7:00 to 9:00, still a few scattered, light showers out there and from

9:00 to 10:00, it kind of falls apart. you can see by noon we're just about out of it. as far as additional rainfall you can see up to 10:00 if there is any it's with that batch up in the north bay and mainly in the higher elevations as that moisture bumps into some of the mountains up there. as far as what's going on with my seven-day forecast we're going to get a break here and there like tomorrow, from fog to high clouds being warmer. a one for thursday into friday. that's a light storm. saturday we get a break but sunday we're talking a couple inches of rain possible with that moderate storm and some gusty maybe damaging breezes. something we'll keep an eye on for you. here is sue keeping an eye on traffic. walnut creek, the fast commuter lane, the left lane, is blocked with an accident. brake lights right where the accident is and leading up to that traffic is flowing nicely out of concord until you reach the brake lights for about an eight-minute delay. to the bay bridge toll plaza where the metering lights are on bs yes, but an accident blocking toll lane number one, the one in

loading up the accident or stall right there in the middle of the backup. they have moved on now and metering lights remain on. it is sluggish at the bay bridge this morning. sue, thank you. a sign how pressing the situation now is, the cdc is postponing its near luke prepareness to discuss the flu. >> a south bay family is reeling from losing a loved one. she went to the hospital and died hours later. reporter matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. this is a horrible story, a mother with flu symptoms taken to the emergency room at good samaritan hospital and died 15 hours later. the family is still in shock. 40-year-old katie oxley thomas was in intensive care and put on life support within hours of arriving at good sam in san jose. her three children and other family members were by her side when she died a few hours later. it's believed she received the flu shot. the family wanted to share their

story as a way to encourage others to take the flu seriously and get vaccinated. >> it's important to go out there and get the flu shot and take care of the symptoms because we just thought she'd be back home in a couple days. and she wasn't. >> reporter: she is one who died from flu complications since october. 19 of those here in the bay area, she was a marathon runner, did yoga as well as pilates. the family has ordered a private autopsy. those results are expected in three to four months. reporting live, matt keller, abc 7 news. this next story is shocking to so many. a couple in riverside faces torture charges in a disturb ing case of abuse. a daughter escaped from their

home and called 911. the children ranged in age from 2 to 29 years old were shackled to beds in dungeon-like conditions living in their own filth. neighbors say they rarely saw the children. >> the older kids, i thought they were 12 because they looked so malnourished, so pale. >> so sad, so horrible. i can't believe this. it's so sad. >> the state department of education website indicates that david turbine ran a school from inside the family's home. the couple is being held on $9 million bail each. just in, this new video of steve bannon arriving. only minutes ago bannon arrived and he is going to be in the hot seat to answer questions in the russian investigation. this comes in the wake of the bombshell book "fire and fury" by michael wolff. called the meeting in trump

tower with russians treasonous and unpatriotic. bannon will be questioned behind closed doors today. back to you. four people are now suing. they say they were attacked in rioting sparked by uc berkeley appearance by milo yiannopoulos. they claim they failed to protect people trying to attend the event last february. they claim they suffered concussions, broken bones, cuts and burns when they were beaten and pepper sprayed. the riot began when masked agitators forced police to cancel his appearance. a man faces attempted murder charges in the beating of his own mother. police say brian bertoli punched her in a hospital parking lot yesterday. officers found him covered in blood. they had to use a stun gun on him because he began to struggle. his mother suffered severe cuts and bruising. a norovirus outbreak made dozens of students and staff at a san francisco elementary school sick. drone view 7 flew over mckinley in the corona heights

neighborhood. according to the district 57 people have gotten ill and 53 are students. symptoms started cropping up after everyone came back from winter break. the school disinfected the campus over the weekend. at the live desk i do have an update from southern california and a 53-year-old man and his dog have been found safe after the deadly mud slides in montecito. so a little bit of good news from there. but there are still 20 people confirmed dead. and right now there's actually three people still missing. last tuesday's mud slides covered a quarter mile stretch of highway 101. officials estimate the mud was 6 to 9 feet deep in some areas. >> the focus is to keep digging up debris pile, send dogs through there, see if we can get a hit, see if we can get a concentrated area that we can work on. right now it's so widespread. the mud, some areas, are still

real soupy. >> and i know a lot of you have friends and family or may head down there soon. highway 101 will remain closed for at least another week. so a heads-up. they have a lot of cleanup left to do and repairs that have to be done. back to you. we'll start talking about the fog out there. it's pretty thick along the coast and up into the north bay. this is going to be a reoccuring theme the next couple of mornings. look at petaluma down to a mile on lakeville street. skillman lane up to old adobe road, penn grove, one of those areas with pretty thick fog and you can see all the way down through half moon bay we have visibility at least a mile or less so be careful. that will be around at least through 10:00. that humid air, three to eight degrees warmer. we'll start down in the south bay. a 5 5 in san jose. 55 in san carlos, alameda, san

francisco, 50 in lafayette. 51 in novato. napa at 54. a look at the south bay where it's mainly cloudy now. you can see a few holes opening up and you never had to deal with the wet weather. the roads are still slippery in some areas. so keep that in mind. mild this morning, a few showers left through 10:00 and on the bay just kind of damp and misty out there. as far as our kids heading back to school, more fog than rain this morning but low to mid-50s, it will be dry but humid at 11:00. and heading home maybe a little sunshine. two more storms coming up on my forecast. here is sue with a look at a busier commute. >> the holiday yesterday and then, boom, we are right back at it today and a solid stream of headlights and hazy conditions, fog on the east shore freeway. an hour and five minutes.

multiple problems at the toll plaza this morning. metering lights have been on since 5:23. we've had a couple of stalls on the span and an accident before the toll plaza. nw a motorcycle blocking a lane on the span. and we flip over to the san mateo bridge. you can see right there at the bottom of your screen the cars got into it. traffic is stacked up behind the toll plaza. they did have to move the cars out of the lane for about a 25-minute drive from 880. here is a look at some of your busier drive times, tracy to dublin, a grind. it's foggy out there. we have an earlier accident near loveridge that's been cleared. the damage is done and over the waldo from the san rafael area into san francisco. hi, everyone. this just coming in and the dow crossing the 26,000 mark for the first time. you can see right now the big board up more than 230 points.

and this is certainly good news for investors on wall street, and we expected this to happen today but now it is official crossing that historic mark. we've seen a lot of records set in this earnings season as we've seen a lot of the dow move past some record numbers but this morning more than 26,000 points. back to you. >> happening today san francisco may put the squeeze on street parking across the city. today the sfmta will consider a pilot program that would limit each household to just two permits. right now households could get up to four permits. the city is currently granting more permits than spaces available. the board is going to meet at 1:00 this afternoon. heads up starting today you will need a reservation for the new parking and shuttle system if you plan to visit muir woods. the park has been overrun by parking and traffic problems for years now. visitors must now have a reservation to park in advance. it costs $8 to park or $3 to take a shuttle.

in august. police assisted with traffic control when federal agents detained two men. oakland's police chief now claims i.c.e. told her it was a criminal raid targeting human trafficking suspects. police say it would not have provided help if they knew it was an immigration raid or deportation action because of oakland's sanctuary city status. libby schaaf said they will not cooperate with i.c.e. agents in the future. a bird flew into an engine. the flight was heading from sacramento to phoenix last night when the crew noticed a smell in the cabin. the flight landed just fine and the passengers were put on another plane. the fight for net neutrality isn't over yet. >> there are several hoops to jump through, though. democrats say they nearly have the votes to override the recent decision to deregulate the broad band industry according to the "chicago tribune." the rules were swept away last month. republicans argue the rules were too restrictive. democrats believe they provided a vital consumer protection.

during the afternoon hours. now i want to jump ahead, thursday morning at 4:00, it's going to be wet for the morning commute. jump ahead to friday evening. about a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain. sunday, watch that. yeah. one to two inches of rain by monday afternoon, and that's why that storm and my accuweather seven-day forecast is a 2, moderate, while thursday and friday will be a 1, light. breezier sunday, also. here is sue with an accident update. to the san mateo bridge and we are able to see this one. you can see the police lights arriving on scene. there is an accident off to the left-hand shoulder there, a couple cars can got into it. and then the eastbound direction if you look right across the way, there's another stalled vehicle blocking the left lane. so a couple problems for both directions of the san mateo bridge. the good news here is that it is not blocking a lane there. but of course because of
