an east bay teenager paralyzed in a wrestling match. many of his classmates are just now hearing what happened today as they return to school after the long weekend. thank you for joining us. ryan joseph suffered a c-4 spinal cord injury last week, paralyzing him from the neck down. abc7 news reporter amy is live in pleasant hill. >> reporter: good morning. we heard the principal make an announcement first thing this morning as students walked into college park high school today. they had more on their minds than just their classes. >> it's going to be a little hard to concentrate, but, yeah, i think a lot of people are

going to be distracted today. >> reporter: a.j. played lacrosse with ryan joseph and describes him as funny and very social. he says ryan has a lot of support here at school. >> he's just a really good guy, like, in general. he always laughed at my jokes and i laughed at his. yeah, we can get through this. >> reporter: ryan suffered a c-4 spinal cord injury during a wrestling match last week and paralyzed from the neck down. his friend since childhood was watching the match when it happened. >> the guy took him down and put him in a hold and the ref got him off. he shook his head like, i can't get up. he just laid there and then the ambulance had to come and stay him. >> reporter: school started off with an announcement, encouraging kids to see the counselor if they need someone to talk to. the shock of what happened to ryan had many students feeling at a loss for words. >> i was surprised. i didn't think that would happen to anyone, but i guess it can happen to anyone.

truck in the first crash. that truck landed on the officer. tammy walker of pittsburg was arrested. she faces several charges. chp says this is not the first time she's been in trouble for driving drunk. the officer is expected to recover. riverside county officials updated us on the shocking case of those siblings shackled to their own parents inside their family home -- or by their own parents. david and louise turpin are charged with multiple counts of torture and child endangerment and held on $9 million bail.ba the children were shackled to their beds with chains and padlocks. the horrific discovery was made sunday when a child escaped with a cell phone and called 911. >> we need to acknowledge the courage of the young girl who escaped to get the help they so

needed. if you can imagine being 17 years old and appearing to be a 10-year-old, being chained to a bed, being malnourished and injuries associated with that, i would call that torture. >> investigators added, they had no prior contact with that family before sunday's discovery. all of the children are now in child protective services. happening now, public health officials are addressing a spike in flu across the country. they're meeting at cdc head quarts in atlanta. officials are being briefed on how to reduce the spread and how to help communities experiencing a medication shortage. today's meeting comes as a south bay family is mourning the loss of their loved one hours after being admitted to the hospital. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live in san jose. matt? >> reporter: natasha, the santa clara county health department has a clinic where you can get your flu shot.

that helps. but even the cdc is saying this is not a normal flu season. do you feel this has been a bad flu season? the centers for disease control and prevention says, it's true. >> this year's influenza season is proving particularly difficult. >> reporter: they held a special meeting to discuss the current flu season. they say this year's virus h3n2, is incredibly difficult to work with, predict and prevent. it's spread quickly across the u.s. with a high number of hospitalizations and deaths. 42 adults under the age of 65 in california have died from flu complications since october. 19 of those have been in the bay area. >> all of the states, 49 of them at least, are reporting in the same week widespread activity. from what i understand from our surveillance experts, lynnette bramer and others, that that hasn't happened in the last 13 years. >> reporter: family members of katie oxley thomas after the

mother of three went to good samaritan hospital emergency room with flu seasons and died 15 hours later. >> we know she could hear us. we were saying, you can fight this. you can beat it. we just didn't believe it. we were in total shock. it's still hard to believe. >> reporter: katie was a marathon runner and did yoga as well as pilates, someone you would expect to beat the flu virus. her family says they wanted to share her story as a way to encourage others to take the flu seriously and get vaccinated. >> it's important to get the flu shot and take care of the symptoms because we just thought she'd be back home in a couple of days. and she wasn't. >> reporter: so what can you do? the cdc says get vaccinated if you haven't already. if you do show signs of flu symptoms, go to your doctor and get anti-viral medication. they say that is working against this flu virus. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc7 news.

>> thank you. we do want to get a check of the weather. you may notice wet roadways on your morning commute and we're not done with the wetness yet. hi, mike. >> hi. let's jump into it. it looks fairly dry out there. it's the cloud cover that will be the more dominant feature of our forecast moving forward. i've taken the storm impact scale down for the storm that has since passed. can you see cloud cover out there and that means it will be cloudy, hazy and humid for today and tomorrow. that will lead to a lot of fog in the overnight hours. rainfall amounts tapered quickly, quicker than we originally thought. we saw the south bay would get something. no, about san francisco, half moon bay, antioch and northward, that's where the rain fell. a lot of rain on our way, especially with the storms sunday and monday now bumped up to a two, moderate on our storm impact scale. i'll show you thursday, friday, saturday and sunday's rain coming up. >> looking forward

thank you. president trump's former chooef strategist steve bannon was questioned in the house intelligence agency. "the new york times" reports bannon was subpoenaed last week by special counsel robert mueller, who is also investigating russian interference. it's the first time mueller is known to have used a grand jury subpoena for information from the president's inner circle. new details from marin county. an actor and popular netflix star pleaded not guilty to stealing from senior citizens. brian box left court and said no comments. he appeared in the netflix series "13 reasons why." he worked as a health health aide and they believe he stole valuables visiting former clients last year. livermore police need your help catching this man. 57-year-old robert white is

accused of identity theft, burglary and fraud. police say he used a fake check to buy more than $3,000 worth of merchandise. investigators say that he frequents trivalley, modesto, stockton and the lodi areas. if you see him, you're asked to call livermore police. the dow hit 25,000 less than two weeks ago. this morning traders celebrating another market milestone. if congress doesn't find a solution soon, there could be a government shutdown. the hot button issue. the banking company says it's stepping up

snud four south carolina law enforcement officers are in the hospital. they were shot trying to arrest a domestic violence suspect. when they got to the home, they say the 47-year-old suspect had escaped. >> canine units were called out to the scene to track the suspect. shortly after the canine track began, the suspect fired shots at the canine unit, hitting one of the officers. >> the man got away again and wasn't spotted until hours later when he exchanged fire with another group of officers. in all, four officers were wounded. he was finally taken into custody. no word on the condition of those who were shot. the sentencing happening for dr. larry nasr, pleading glilty to first-degree criminal assault of nine women, but at least 10

and pepper sprayed. police canceled his appearance. today's morning money report. wall street hit a new milestone passing the 26,000 mark after the opening bell. it's jumped 42%, 8,000 since president trump was elected in 2016. financial experts say the trump administration's business-friendly policy and tax cuts are fueling this growth. citigroup says it plans to boost pay for women and minorities in the u.s., britain and germany. it's an effort to close the gender pay gap. the move follows shareholder pressure in all three of those countries. this morning airbnb announcing a new payment option. you can make a deposit had when booking your rental and pay the rest close to the actual reservation date. they tested this and found 40,000 guests opted for that

particulate matter. that ended yesterday. it is pretty mild out there, from 52 at clear lake to 62 in oakland and hayward. let's take a look at one of those areas that's still pretty hazy, our inland east bay neighborhoods. cloudy, humid air. that's why we have the haze. cleaner today. today dense fog will form, and cooler and strong storms will form. we had a few breaks earlier this morning. as you look upstream, there's a nice wall of clouds coming our way. this wall is moving to the north a little bit so it will open up overnight. that's why the dense fog will form and we'll see a little more sunshine tomorrow than we have so far this week. temperatures will top out. about 59 to about 62 degrees. here's how my accuweather 12-hour planner breaks down. dry, no rain. still humid at noon. near 60 at 4:00.

not much sunshine. mid-50s at 8:00. we'll see a few stars but at midnight dense fog forms. look at all that fog tomorrow. most of us in the mid to upper 40s, about 10 degrees cooler than this morning. thursday morning at 4:00, can you see down to the san mateo bridge, possibly starting off with wetness and everybody still be slick by 9:00. by the evening commute you can see everybody is wet through 7:00, it will still be raining. during the overnight hours we'll tack on a little more in the way of wetness through friday morning. by friday afternoon that's when it will end with a quarter to half an inch. jump ahead to sunday and what we're going to see is rain becoming very aggressive. look at this. wow. that's even more than this morning. that may be a little overdone but it looks like an atmospheric river is coming our way sunday night, monday, and linger through wednesday and tuesday. the first storm, thursday and

friday will hit the sierra. down at the lake level, about a foot to two feet of snow. that starts tomorrow -- or thursday at noon and goes through friday at 4:00. here's my accuweather seven-dade forecas day forecast. with rainfall amounts getting up to about half an inch, that's why that storm system will be a one. now sunday and monday, i've got it at a two right now. looking at the latest rainfall totals it may have to be bumped up to a three. >> may be pushing a three. >> maybe. it's still several days away. we'll fine-tune as we get closer. that's our medium-ange model. it's not as accurate as short-range model which is higher resolution model. as we get closer, that's why we can hone in if it's a three or not. >> thank you. there are some privacy concerns after a report found automakers are collecting
