tonight. >> this fire happened in antioch and let's go ahead and show you a map. it was at the country place assisted living on olive lane >> leslie brinkley is live with the story. >> reporter: dan and kristen, you can imagine the panic of getting 49 alzheimer's patients evacuated from the building behind me and then bussed away to another assisted living facility about a mile away from here in antioch. the red cross is bringing in cots to help the displaced seniors. that fire started around 2:00 in a laundry room here at country place and it triggered a sprinkler head that flooded the rooms in the common areas. residents were hoping to go back in and recover their belongings but they were evacuated. no one was injured and authorities called a mass casualty event because they

needed to find immediate housing for 49 alzheimer's patients. a facility called stepped up and these residents are likely to be displaced for a while. a cleanup crew i spoke to here said that there was a fire in a neighboring building just a year ago also that appeared to start in a laundry room. but these 49 residents are safe and sound for now. reporting live in antioch, i'm leslie brinkley abc7 news. in san francisco, firefighters contained a fire at an apartment building about 30 minutes ago. it started about 3:30 this afternoon in a building on taylor street in knob hill. firefighters say there was heavy smoke in the back of the building and flames between that building and the one next door, no one was hurt. four people are suing over last year's riot on the uc berkeley

campus after conservative commentator milo yuanopolis. he says that the college did not -- the speech was ultimately cancelled but the damage had been done. lawyers today clearly pointing the finger at police. >> what you expect is law enforcement to do their job. you don't expect to and a and a and an narcist rally. the city of berkeley is not commenting either. the highway patrol tells us that one of their officers was pinned under a pick-up truck on the freeway last night when he used his cell phone to call 911. bystand bystanders worked to get the car off of officer martin lendway.

this is the second accident in two weeks in which an officer was hurt. >> our hearts are broken, our lives are shattered and we loved andrew so much and miss him. we can't believe we'll never see him again, but we're going to make sure his legacy lives on. >> reporter: the fallen officer's mother acame to the hearing. he had been hospitalized with serious injuries after his car drifted off interstate 880 in hayward on christmas eve. it slammed into the back of ali's well above the limit of.08. a contingent of chp officers came to court to support their fallen conrad who was married

with three young children. ali was charged with murder, bodily injury and several other counts. ali's attorney says that he is remorseful, but a murder charge, he says, seems too excessive. >> it was a police officer with three children that was killed and i think there's a sensitivity there. >> reporter: to put a punctuation park on the dangers chp officers face every day, another officer almost died last night in contra costa county. just after 6:00 p.m., in concord, motorcycle officer martin lendway was assisting drivers who had been in a collision. the chp says that the 52-year-old slammed into the car that lendway was assisting, pinning officer lend way under one of them.

he suffered major injuries. a dui suspect trying to get away from chp in modesto--the officer is in serious condition. the chase started when the highway patrol spotted a guy going the wrong way on highway 99 overnight. the chase went through city streets, back on to the highway then ended near the airport. in the meantime, a project to prevent wrong way drivers is apparently out of testing face and is being implemented across the state. the sign features wrong way signs and dplfleckors on the highway. a gang is involve in a spree

of robberies and carjacking, police arrested these seven adults including five teenagers. police recovered seven guns, lots of fake guns along with thousands of dollars. also in the south bay, san jose and santa clara city leaders have come to an agreement to allow two major development projects to move forward. it paves the way for tens of thousands of future jobs at two developments, santana west in san jose and a project called city place in santa clara near levi stadium. chris? >> reporter: kristen, good evening to you. the city of san jose has committed nearly $15 million to help with traffic improvements related to this case. that money will not come from the general fund but instead will come from development fees. both tell us they're excited to move forward with these

projects. >> reporter: traffic in silicon valley. >> there's probably more travelers now going from one place to another because they need to work. >> reporter: the initially had them suing each other to prevent construction on projects along their common border. >> we know a lot of residents in san jose are going to be going to work in santa clara, so we have to make sure we have road capacity to handle them. >> reporter: on the site of the old century theater lot across from santana row, a 5 million square feet office development will be built. >> it's really going to be a high end entertainment area and something that's going to be attractive to high-tech workers, millennial's and all those employed in silicon valley.

>> a 9 million square feet project to have room for housing, restaurants along with retail. across from levi stadium, this parking lot and the golf course behind it will be completely ripped out for the city place project. tens of millions of dollars will be spent on trying to improve traffic throughout the area, all aimed at making this south bay's new destination. the two projects are expected to break ground within the next two years. well, in marin county this morning the arraignment of a promising young actor who is charged with burglarizing some elderly people he took care of. >> reporter: what you're about to hear is something brian box never imagined saying, if the face looks familiar, box played a bit party in the netflix drama "13 reasons why."

his alleged activities there led to his arrest on september 29 by tibron police. box who lives in vallejo pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing valuables last fall from victims. the mo in these cases is pretty much the same. box worked for all of the victims as a caretaker. he would return, visit with them, return and burglarize them. while box passed background checks, they fired him after three months in 2016 for being unreliable and not trust worthy. ti brk tiburon police there were at least four other cases. tiburon place say they have at least one witness to a break in and that surveillance cameras show box entering a resident on

the mother of 13 children kept locked in filthy conditions seemed perplexed about why deputies came to their home. that's according to a sheriff's department official. david and louise turpin are accused of shackling their children in filthy conditions. a hospital spokesperson says that the kids ranging from 2 to 29 are very small for their age but they're stable. >> they're very friendly. they're very cooperative. and i believe that they're hopeful that life will get better. >> you can imagine being 17 years oelyear years old and appearing to be a 10-year-old, being chained to a bed, being malnourished and injuries associated with that. i would call that torture. >> the sheriff's captain says deputies have never been to that

home and neither had social service workers. a man accused of murdering two sheriff's deputies in northern california went on a loud and angry tirade during his trial. luis alamonte. a sacramento county judge cleared the courtroom when he made profanity laced threats. >> i want you to be present, but you will not disrupt this trial. you will not speak out. if you do, you will be removed from the courtroom. do you understand that? >> i do. >> he was living in the u.s. illegally at the time of the shootings and had been deported to mexico twice for selling drugs.

the governor says he's now willing to build only one tunnel to ship water from northern california instead of two. the proposal would also put southern and central water agencies directly in charge of designing and building it. the multibillion dollar project to provide cities and towns with water has never had much support. the governor hopes to launch the project before he leaves office this year. delays to obtain rights of way and barriers has increased the cost of california's bullet train by $3 billion. it's currently under construction in the central valley. the overall cost is now up to $67 billion. the initial projection was 40

billion. the rail will connect san francisco and los angeles in three hours by 2029. the second mustang used as the legendary chase scene in the movie bullet is now over. there's the car, a 1968 ford mustang gt fast back, they used two of them through the chase through san francisco, steve mcqueen at the wheel. both cars vanished until one of them was found in a salvage yards in mexico last year. the location of the second one is no longer a mystery, it was found at the san francisco auto show. no word on the price of the new mustang. experts say the original could fetch more than $4 million at auction. contrary to what some think, the usgs says they a full moon
