for their lives, a disturbing story from southern california shares similarities with a story of captivity and escape from right here in the bay area. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm krist zee. the parents of 13 children who were locked up in a home have not said why they were shut in. >> the children ranged in age from 2 to 2 29 and kept out of public schools and mostly hidden from neighbors. >> it's sim floor >> on the outside, this home in perris, california looks like the others on this street, but officials say inside was a house of horrors. 13 siblings were held captive in the house by their own parents. david and louise turpin both now in jail. a 17 year old called 911 after she escaped through a window.

neighbors say they rarely saw or heard the kids. all of them were home schooled. >> i just don't understand how people can be so cruel to kids. >> reporter: retired police officer ali jacobs is talking about the jaycee dugard case. she was held captive for 18 years at a home in antioch where she gave birth to two daughters fathered by gur ito. he met with jacobs who felt something wasn't right. >> i called the parole officer who promptly told me that he didn't have any children. >> reporter: the call led to police finding and freeing jaycee dugard from her antioch prison. it looks about the same as it did back in 2009, except the house itself. new owners bought the house years ago, tearing down tall

fences in the back yard where jaycee lives. >> if you feel like something's off, you need to do something about it. you need to say something. >> reporter: phillip and nancy guerrito are serving life sentences. law enforcement arrested a man suspected of driving under the influence of marijuana. thomas henny was arrested yesterday afternoon after he crashed into an embankment in sebastopol. a woman was thrown from the vehicle and is being treated for major injuries. officers smelled marijuana coming from henny. they believe he was on marijuana and prescription drugs. chp says it's not the first marijuana dui arrest since the new law legalized recreational pot on january 1st. police have arrested a dozen people who they say were part of

a violent criminal street gang, accused in 30 carjackings and other crimes. katie marzullo is live with the story. katie? >> reporter: of the 12 people who were arrested, five are juveniles, ages 15 to 17. police say they used a gun in most of the crimes and in some cases the gun was fired. >> in my experience, unfortunately, it's not shocking at all. very frequently, we're arresting juveniles for extremely serious and violent crimes. >> reporter: five teenagers and seven adults arrested in connection with at least 30 carjackings, robberies and burglaries since the summer. one of the crimes took a violent turn. >> he met three males who robbed and assaulted him, hit him in the head with a brick, caused a skull fracture. >> reporter: maria has lived in the area for 25 years. >> i never go after 10:00 out the house because i scared.

>> reporter: the suspects are accused of firing an ar-15 during a carjacking. >> before i moved here, i grew up in concord. this area was considered a little rougher. but in the last years i've heard it's really, really safe. >> reporter: police believe the arrests have made san jose a safer place. >> we've had 18 reported carjackings in the month of december. we've not had a single one since our roundup. i'm not saying every carjacking or crime is attributable to this group. >> reporter: many were at a home on lotus street that appeared to be the hub of the operation. katie marzullo, abc 7 news. uc berkley is asking its campus to take part in a survey about violence and sexual abuse. the study will question students, faculty and staff on

santa rosa, two miles. so you know you're going to need that extra time for the morning commute. temperatures in the 50s. and here's a live picture from the abc 7 exploratorium camera. cold showers, breezy conditions for thursday and friday and a moderate-strength storm is coming in on sunday. first thing tomorrow morning your temperatures will begin in the low 40s to low 50s with quite a bit of fog around. so be prepared for that, and allow that extra time for the morning commute. for the afternoon, upper 50s to low 60s, a little more sun than you saw today. level one system comes in thursday into friday. a light system on the storm impact scale. cold showers, a quarter to half an inch. and dangerous surf wednesday night into thursday. hour by hour we go, thursday morning. midnight is when we first start to see some drops showing up. but it's not until 5:00 a.m. that the north bay is seeing the

light rain. it continues to move south and eastward by 9:00 a.m. by noontime central bay, parts of the peninsula getting wet, and it's pretty much going to be a wet afternoon and evening. scattered showers expected for the evening rush. this is indicating snow up around the mountains of lake county, so this is going to be a very cold-natured storm. it's going to dump snow in the sierra nevada and continuing through about the early afternoon. high surf warning up for 10:00 p.m. wednesday through 10:00 p.m. thursday. current heights 11-12 feet. dangerous waves, especially when the westerly swells build between 15-20 feet. a winter storm watch for the sierra nevada. the snow level around 4,000 feet, 8-12 inches, but up to 20 inches possible up in the mountains. and look at this. a few inches of snow, down to 3,000 feet. you know what the gusty winds, you are going to need chains.

i wouldn't try to travel until the storm has passed. this one is a moderate storm, a two on the impact scale. light to moderate rain. rainfall from a half inch to inch and a half. so it does look wetter but not as wet as the earlier computer model runs. so we may have to downgrade this even more. gusty winds. here's the hour by hour forecast for sunday. we'll certainly see rain beginning sunday afternoon spreading during the evening hours and continuing monday before this system winds down and we get a brief break. foggy for the morning commute, watch out, a level one system, thursday, friday, much colder air, so you'll need the heavy winter coats or jackets. slight chance of thunder on friday, a break on saturday, a moderate-strength storm sunday, level two. and level one for monday, with just a chance on tuesday. you can check out live doppler 7 on the app. it is a heart-warming breakout performance you have to see.
