frustrated president trump. we did see i.c.e. agents raiding 7-elevens last week looking for illegal immigrants. the upcoming sweep we're now hearing about is expected to be much larger. according to the san francisco chronicle, federal agents will be looking to arrest 1500 people in northern california. but mostly in the bay area. the chronicle is quoting an anonymous source familiar with the operation who says it is planned to take place within weeks. those who have criminal records and those who have been served final deportation papers will be the focus. but if agents come across other undocumented immigrants during the raid, they'll be taken into custody. an official with i.c.e. told us he cannot speculate about future operations. so that is the official word from i.c.e. but the source who knows about the operation says i.c.e. agents across the country will be flown in to california to help with this sweep. reporting live in san francisco,

amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. happening today, vital information for d.r.e.a.m.ers is expected to be released. there's going to be a news conference to discuss steps students can take now. the attorney general, uc president janet knanapolitano a others will be there. they're asking that a decision be overturned to keep protect n protections for undocumented students. police arrested a dozen people part of a violent criminal street gang. here are the mug shots of the people arrested they were in 30 carjackings, and other crimes. in one case, they're accused of firing an ar-15 during a carjacking. >> we had 18 rornted carjackings in the month of december. we have not had a single one since our roundup. i'm not going to say every crime or carjacking is attributable to this group, but that's a measurable impact i would say.

>> the suspects were arrested january 10th. many were at a home on lotus street. it appears to be the hub of the operation. now, breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> still following some very big international breaking news. south korea saying that the two rival koreas agreed to form their first joint olympic team and will march together in the opening ceremony next month. as you may, the winter olympics being held in south korean the agreement happened just a short while ago during talks between the two nations. athletes from the two koreas will march together under a unification flag and the koreas will reportedly field a women's hockey team. not quite a done deal. the deal needs to be approved by the international olympic committee. that's expected this weekend. >> thank you. uc berkeley campus students asking to take part in a survey.

it's privately funded. the study will ask students, faculty and staff about their beliefs surrounding violence and harassment. they'll use them to tailor services, programs and policies. berkeley is considering a surveillance program. they want public input before a decision is made. it would include thermal imaging technology for firefighters and police body cameras. the city provided a web page to leave comments. you can find that information on our website, abc7news.com. it's 6:05. the north bay wildfires dealt a double blow to survivors who lost their homes and lost trust in their insurance companies. now lawmakers are proposing a package of eight bills to help victims get back on their feet. they include a proposal extending the time to rebuild and collect full replacement cost from the current 24 months to 36 months. another allows homeowners to avoid the requirement that some say forces them to relive the tragedy when they have to itemize every single item they lost in the fires.

out light rain in the north bay starting at 4:00 in the morning. at least the steady variety. before that, i started the clock at 9:00 this evening. show you a few green dots out there in the north bay. scattered showers are possible. but you can see the steady light to occasional moderate rain in the north bay until 9:00 when it starts to spill southward into the bay. and then by noon, it's going to start spilling into the south bay and our inland east bay neighborhoods. by 4:00, it starts to turn from steady rain over to showers, which will last all the way through friday afternoon. rainfall amounts, you can see for the commute, some mild. slickness out there. especially north of the bay bridge. and then during the evening commute, friday's morning and afternoon commute, about a quarter to half inch of rain is possible. my seven-day forecast. enjoy the dry weather saturday. the wet and windy conditions. a 2 on the storm impact scale. lingering showers for monday and tuesday. how is the commute this morning, sue? >> it's rough if you're taking the san francisco bay ferry.

they have a mechanical issue again this morning from the vallejo area. they will be replacing that ferry with buses. there are assistants on hand to help you get through that transition. all right. let's take a look at the fog. mike has been talking about this. it's represented by orange on our screen. an accident at northbound 238 near east 14th. apparently blocking the left lane there. a new accident just reported. once again, there's the fog on 80 westbound. this one near san pablo dam road. apparently blocking a lane of traffic as well. we'll check back on this one in your drive time in a few minutes. thank you, sue. a project to prevent wrong-way drivers is out of testing phase and being implemented across the state. the system uses enlarged wrong-way signs and special red reflectors on highway exit ramps. if those fail, a radar camera on the exit ramp will trigger a flashing light and then send a photo of the wrong-way driver's vehicle to law enforcement. new technology can turn

the pi beta phi sorority and two members of the men's rowing team suspect they were drugged at the sigma chi fraternity house friday night. there's an e-mail cited from the staff to sorority members saying they experienced unusual symptoms aligned with that of someone taking a benzodiazepine. it functions as a minor tranquilizer. they're commonly known as a date rape drug or roofies. stanton daily and the fountain hopper, another publication, says a suspect was invited to the party and a member of the dartmouth college men's rowing team. all seven students have since recovered. reporting live at stanford university, matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. we have new details this morning about the siblings found shackled in southern california. >> the mother of 13 malnourished adult and juvenile children was confused when riverside county sheriffs deputies arrived. her 17-year-old had escaped and

pass. earlier eastbound roadwork has been picked up. that was really causing delay in the eastbound direction. take a look at the westbound, that's typical. an hour and ten-minute drive from tracy up and over the altamont pass with speeds slowing below 10 miles per hour in some instances. that's really pretty typical for this time of the morning. southbound 880 near mowry, an earlier accident cleared off to the right shoulder. traffic is very slow from highway 484. westbound 80 near hilltop, that's partially blocking the left lane and traffic is stacked up to highway 4 there. for about an hour drive from hercules to san francisco. that's your commute. just coming into our live desk, we are learning of some new developments in the case of a college student who was found buried at a southern california park. there may be a possible motive. a possible hate crime in this case. in an affidavit obtained by the orange county register, the

when it's mixed with warm water, the powder turns the pills into a biodegradable gel that can then be thrown in the trash. surgery patients often end up with leftover opioid painkillers. in southern california, a law firm filed the first lawsuit connected to the deadly mudslides in santa barbara county. they say a transformer sparked the thomas fire leaving it without vegetation. the suit claims the water mains owned and operated by the montecito water district failed during a storm, adding millions of gallons of water to the mudslides. officials say 115 homes were destroyed and another 242 damaged. the cost to build the high-speed rail line in california has jumped by $2.8 billion. the overrun is blamed on delays and higher than expected costs. the high-speed rail system is under construction in the central valley. the overall cost of the project is now around $67 billion.
