good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. >>s this abc7 morning. >> good morning, and thanks for being with us. it's saturday, january 20th. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking live doppler 7 for us. >> hi, everyone. we see the sun behind you. boy, is it cold out there. here's live doppler 7. we have mostly clear conditions. partly cloudy skies. some haze here from emeryville. temperatures look like this, 40 in mountain view, 40 in san jose. upper 30s in oakland and gilroy. warmer at the coast. right here, how about 34 in santa cruz, going for a high of 57. 33 in livermore. and 38 in concord with only 31 in napa. so it looks nice and winterlike in the sierra nevada, as it should. back home we will see the 30s last through the next hour or so in the north bay.

40s and 50s elsewhere. by noontime, low 50s. and by the afternoon not much warmer. but plenty of sun. enjoy it. we cloid cloud up tomorrow. rain arrives late sunday. we will track it for you for your monday morning commute in the next few minutes. today marks the country year anniversary of donald trump's inauguration, and the president is waking up to a government shutdown. he was supposed to be in florida today celebrating that anniversary. but that trip has been postponed because of the crisis. abc7 news reporter david wright has the reaction from capitol hill. >> reporter: as of this morning, routine government business grinds to a halt after a night of frantic negotiations behind closed doors and on the senate floor. >> government shutdown was 100% avoidable. >> reporter: senators lingered even after the midnight deadline trying to salvage a deal. >> some people are going to have to get off their high horse and

come to their senses. >> reporter: the month-long stopgap passed by the house failed to clear the senate. so senator lindsey graham tried to rally support for a shorter, three-week stopgap. >> i feel like i'm switzerland, with an army the size of the vatican. >> reporter: but the senate was unable to reach an agreement. >> the motion is not agreed to. >> reporter: republicans needed 60 votes to end the debate. in tend sh they fell ten votes short. then the finger-poiting began. senate minority leader chuck schumer called out president trump, whom he met with earlier friday. >> the blame should crash entirely on president trump's shoulders. this will be called the trump shutdown. >> reporter: republicans blame the democrats. >> what we've just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision by senate democrats to shove aside millions of americans for the sake of irresponsible

political games. >> reporter: the white house released a statement calling this the schumer shutdown, saying this is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislators. vice president pence is also reacting this morning. he's on a trip to the middle east. >> i think -- i think what we have to do in this moment is demand that the congress do their job. >> reporter: david wright, abc news, washington. president trump is up early this morning, blaming democrats for the government shutdown on twitter. he says democrats are far more concerned with illegal immigrants than they are with our great military or safety at our dangerous southern border they could have easily made a deal but decided to play shutdown politics instead. we need more republicans in 2018 in order to power through mess. how minority leader nancy pelosi criticized republicans at the capitol. during the government shutdown she told fellow kangs members to stop pretending that the gop tax

plan benefits working americans. >> let's get serious. get it together. some romancing yourselves about that tax bill, and start getting serious about meeting the needs of the american people. >> despite the shutdown, northern california's federal courts will stay open and mail service will continue. yosemite national park will remain open but with limited services. alcatraz will also stay open to tourists and the presidio will mostly be opened. one potentially dangous rouse closure is the cdc flu center. this is the most serious flu season in years. the shutdown could mean that local health departments will continue to collect flu samples but cdc may not test them which is necessary to detect new strains. for a complete look at the impact of the shutdown in the bay area, we have a list on our website, abc7news.com. happening today, the bay area is ready for the women's march. and this year brings a new call

to action. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story now from downtown san jose. >> everyone is with here. no hate, no fear. >> reporter: the first women's march was a reaction to president trump taking office. organizers say this year is different. >> this year it's a proactive march. >> reporter: in san jose the group will march from city thool rein green near the sap center. there, 46 community organizations will be waiting. >> people can learn how they can get engaged in the commune on issues they care about like immigration, reproductive rights, protection for survivors of domestc violence. >> reporter: the theme in 2018 is hear our vote. >> this year we are really focused on action and helping people you know, create change my enabling them, getting more people to register to vote and actually commit to voting. >> reporter: san francisco is expecting at least 80,000 people. there is a rally at civic center plaza at noon. the march begins at 2:00. in oakland thing kick off at

10:00 a.m. at lake merit. there are events planned in santa rosa, sonoma, napa, pacifica, and walnut creek. >> we have take b our democracy for granted too much, i believe. and let's not be so complacent. >> yeah, it's very exciting to see the increased participation of so many people who have been so passive for so long. >> reporter: millions of people marched nationwide last year. it was considered the largest single-day demonstration in u.s. history. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc7 news. there are eight women's marches in the bay area happening today. you can find the full list on our website, abc7news.com. we've posted the start times and locations as well as how public transportation could be impacted throughout day. in other headlines the women who hit and killed a 3-year-old in a crash on interstate 680 will be spending at least the next two years in prison. yaranit malihan was sentenced in a plea deal yesterday. despite protests from the victim's family she will likely

only serve a fraction of her seven-year sentence. abc7 has the story. >> reporter: investigators say yaranit malihan was out on bail in a pending dui case and under the influence of drugs when she crashed her suv into a car stalled on the shoulder of interstate 68 to 0 in san ramon. the september 2016 collision killed 3-year-old elijah dunn, injured his mother, and emotionally scarred two other children in the car. >> we will all have to be in counselling for the rest of our lives, probably. she left a huge, huge, huge, horrible impact on my family and after two years she is going to go on with her life. >> reporter: malihan pled guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter with a multiple victim enhancement. she gave a tearful apology in court. she will only serve half of her seven year sentence. she is already in custody, which means she will get credit for time served. she could be out as early as 2020. >> that's not justice.

that's -- you got a slap on the hand. >> reporter: malihan is married to an alameda county deputy. but the d.a.'s office says that has nothing to do with the case. prosecutors say they charged vehicular manslaughter based on theed of. >> the family wanted a send degree murder charge just like numerous other cases in the area. >> reporter: after the deadly crash, malihan was arrested a third time, for being drunk in public. now the family says they will lobby to change the dui sentencing guidelines. >> with every ounce in my body i'm going to give it all and try to make it happen in his honor. >> reporter: in the east bay, abc7 news. time now is 8:58. the infamous serial stowaway, marilyn hartman has been arrested again for sneaking onto an airplane without a ticket. chicago police send this new booking photo to abc7 news. authorities arrested hartman after she snuck past security at o'hare airport and got on to a british airways flight to london ticketless. she was caught by uk border

agents at heathrow airplane and sent back to chicago where she was arrested of the in recent years hartman tried to board and fly without a ticket from several airports, including san jose, sfo, and oakland international. former 49er dana stubblefield is in jail this morning. our media partner the mercury news reports a judge ordered him held on trial on charges he raped an intellectually disabled women in 2015. prosecutors claim the victim had gone to stubblefield's house to interview for a baby-sitting job. he had been free on bail over a year. but yesterday prosecutors added the allegation that stubblefield used a gun during the assault which made it a no bail case. stubblefield pled not geld guilty to the charges and strongly denied the victim's claims. new details on the pleasant hill teenager who was paralyzed during a wrestling match. generous donors have contributed more than $122,000 to his go fund me account to help with

senator mark leno can use the funds he has raised since announcing his candidacy for san francisco mayor last may to apply for matching public financing money from the city. another candidate, angela alioto sued the campaign last week trying to stop his attempts to do so. she claims it gives leno an unfair advantage compared to other candidates who have recently begun to fund raise. the special election is set for june 5th. developing news in san francisco. police say the suspected gunman in a homicide has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. investigators say winston hue killed a 65-year-old woman this the outer sunset yesterday afternoon. police say they found hue near golden gate park in a car armed with a hand gun. they say he shot him while officers tried to negotiate with him. abc7 news reporter lonnie rivera was at the scene. >> reporter: just in front of golden gate park, you can see yella tape blocking the entrance. police cars in front.

and there are several more inside of the park. police arrived here on scene. and it was a development in a homicide case we were covering not too far from here in the sunset neighbor. police cars arrived. they surrounded the vehicle. and yes, we learned the driver of that vehicle was a suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that took place not too far from here. >> i'm not sure if i know the people who it is. but it's disturbing. you know? it's the block. it's where we live. >> reporter: neighbors arrived home to police tape blocking 34th avenue from ortega to noriega. they waited as police secured the scene after a deadly shooting around 4:30 friday afternoon. >> my daughter called me hysterical because she saw all the police on the block. and didn't know what was happening. and she was afraid. >> reporter: eric's wife called him before he drove home. >> she said she saw police cars and then she heard a scream and a shot. and that was it. and then she was hiding.

>> reporter: detectives suspect 67-year-old winston hue shot the victim, a 65-year-old woman, multiple times, then drove away. in san francisco, lonnie rivera, abc7 news. breaking news in the east bay. firefighters are searching for victims in an apartment fire in martinez. we know at least one person was taken to the hospital. an apartment on farm lane off old orchard road burned this morning. the contra costa county fire protection district says it grew into a second alarm fire. we are working to gather more information, including the condition of that victim. and we will keep you posted as we learn more. a coroner found tom petty dyed from an accidental overdose with a mix of drugs in his system. the autopsy found an anti-depressant, sedatives, and opinion killers, including pent no, which also killed prince.

his feel says he suffered from emif a sima and had a hip. tom petty died in october at the age of 66. the governor has stepped in to block the release of a charles manson family killer. leslie van houten took nart the killings of a couple in 1969. back in september, a parole board decided she was suitable for release. but last night, governor jerry browne reversed that decision. he cited the violent nature of the crime, and how van houten down played her role in the murders during her september parole hearing. on a lighter note, today is shaping up to be a great he day for skiing in tahoe. video from kirkwood and north star resorts show more than a foot of new snow. 9 to 11 inches fell last night in the north tahoe area. today should be sunny but chilly day. there are no chain resubtractions on interstate 80 or highway 50. more snow is expected tomorrow.

their fingers at each other. and get this, the shutdown itself could cost the country's economy $38 million every hour. abc news reporter maggie rulli is live in new york city with the latest developments this morning. maggie, good morning to you. chris, good morning. those numbers are shocking, but besides just the government shutdown, today also marks the one-year anniversary of the day donald trump became the president. and the political battle is as heated as ever. the government is hut down. and both sides had taking shots. >> the blame should crash entirely on president trump's shoulders. this will be called the trump shutdown. >> what we've just witnessed on the floor was a cynical decision by senate democrats to shove aside millions of americans for the sake of irresponsible political games. >> reporter: top lawmakers and president trump met throughout the day scrambling to make a

last-minute compromise. yet by the midnight deadline, still no deal. democratic lawmakers say they won't pass a spending bill unless they get guaranteed protection force d.r.e.a.m.ers, the nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children. >> where is the urgency when it comes to d.r.e.a.m.ers? there is an urgency. there is an urgency in their lives because of the uncertainty of tomorrow. >> reporter: in a statement, the white house called this an attempt to hold lawful citizens hostage and republicans say there is no rush to write legislation protecting d.r.e.a.m.ers. while the specifics are unclear, here's most likely how the shutdown will affect you. it could cost the u.s. economy $38 million every hour. hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed without pay. and by february, members of the military will see their paychecks delayed. essential services would continue. you will still get your mail. social security benefits will go out. tsa and air traffic control will keep working.

senators are back at work starting today at noon. but we are already feeling the effects of that shutdown. right now, we are standing in an area where people come to wait for the statue of liberty but visitors aren't being allowed onto ellis island today. since it's run by the federal government it's now shut down indefinitely. abc7 news. >> maggie, thank for the live report. new this morning, it turns out the government shutdown will not impact the cdc's flu program. but new numbers indicate that the epidemic is getting worse with more children dying because of the flu. abc news reporter ariel rasha has the story. >> reporter: they are the faces of this year's deadly flu epidemic. this third grader in alabama among the latest victims. the cdc calling this the worst flu season in eight years. >> activity has gone up again this week. >> reporter: children hit particularly hard. so far, 30 pediatric deaths have been reported, nearly double this time last year. clinics across the country

to the north bay to the east bay really allowing for a well mixed atmosphere. that's why we don't have any fog. but the winds will be on-shore today. southwesterly tomorrow as the front moves through late sunday into monday. chilly temperatures this modern. right and cool this afternoon. and several days of rain in the extended outlook. favoring the north bay but everyone will pick up some precipitation. mid 50s for oakland and fremont as well as palo alto and 55 in vallejo. then tonight a few more clouds. almost as cold. 30s to the north and east with low 40s in oakland. bringing in your storm impact scalings this is for sunday night into monday. it is a one. you can see how generous the rain is from the north bay. .8 to about two inches. we could see anywhere from a quarter of an inch to 3/4 of an inch elsewhere. here's the timing. dry tomorrow. 2:30, the rain line is in sonoma county. then it sink right in time for the morning commute.

bradley's pulmonary valve was closed obstructing the outflow of blood from his heart to his lung. this shows him in the neonatal intensive care unit. last year, he underwent open heart surgery to replace the involve completely. that's when his uncle got in touch with make a wish. >> through the open heart surgery, this is him all through his life. from the day he was born he has been a fighter. >> reporter: adding to the challenge of his recovery, bradley's family narrowly escaped the north bay wildfires. devastation is just outside of their doorstep. in the next three days, bradley will be an honor rather member of the san jose sharks. captain joe pavelski is glad to have him on board. >> guys were excited to see him. we know he has been through a lot. you can see the excitement on his face. >> reporter: this kid showing that faith and perseverance will lead you where you want to be. >> even if you watch them, it's
