for credit secrets, sponsored by info up, llc. the product endorsers who appear have been compensated for their travel and lodging costs. all of the endorsers are actual enthusiastic and successful users of the credit secrets program. (warm music) - hi, i'm larry king. you know, you could be, through no fault of your own, one of the tens of millions of people in our country with a lower credit score than you deserve. without even being late with one payment.
3:07 pm
sound crazy? well in 2012 the ftc conducted a major study that showed that one of every five americans had at least one error on one of their credit reports. in their follow-up study, in 2015, 70% of consumers believe their information is still inaccurate. well tonight, on this larry king special report is your credit in crisis? one of the country's greatest experts is gonna reveal the inside credit secrets you need to turn your financial life around. john ulzheimer is a nationally recognized expert on credit reporting, credit scoring, and identity theft. formerly of fico and equifax, he's the only recognized credit expert who actually comes from the credit industry. welcome john. - larry, thanks for having me, i'm very excited to be here.
3:08 pm
- john, for those of us who live in beverly hills, what credit crisis? - well, larry, look, even though things may be great for you, one out of three americans have low credit scores. one out of three. so let's say i take you with your incredible credit score and one of the tens of millions of people with a low credit score into a car dealership, you will be in and out with your brand new car in record time, but how many of your viewers identify with the other scenario? you're buying a car for your wife, or grown child to get to work safely, you fill out all the forms and you're sweating, waiting for your salesman to come back from the finance office. finally, after what seems like hours, he comes back, looks you in the eye, and says we have to decline your loan today, right? you feel like you were just punched in the gut, but why, you ask. he looks down at the floor and says, i'm sorry i can't tell you that. you'll be getting a letter in the mail in the next few days that will explain why. and turns and walks away, leaving you alone.
3:09 pm
- oh, ouch. what do you tell the family when you get home? - yeah, exactly. you know, you want to crawl into a hole, hope everything will get better on its own, the problem will fix itself. it's like a bad dream, larry, but it's not a bad dream, it is real, and the problem will not fix itself. - and it's just from your credit report? - yes sir. that is just the tip of the iceberg, larry. it can cost you a loan, a home, a cellphone, a reasonable interest rate, a credit card, even a job. - it's hard to believe one piece of paper can have that devastating effect. - that's a very good point. one out of every three americans, larry. if not you, the person living next door. - let's break away for a moment and hear from some people just like you and how they're dealing with their credit in crisis. - i had a really successful business and it was driven by credit. and i was doing great volume one day, and i was out of business the next.
3:10 pm
i lost my farm, i lost my house, it caused a heart attack, i went through a divorce. and i tried to pick up the pieces. - for me to have to say i can not get you something for christmas. that was like the worst. - you can't imagine when you're trying to get something and everybody tells you no and you know you're worthy, but because of what's happened in the past, it kind of tears you down. - seeing my little girl and not being able to buy her a house or a place where she can play. and then credit bureaus don't care. they don't care and the collection agencies, they don't care, they just want the money. and that's what's hard about it is i don't have the money. i make a ton of money, i'm an engineer, and i can't even buy a house with all the money i make, and it's hard. - wow, so much suffering. - well, look, you feel helpless. and why shouldn't you, larry, the credit bureaus keep a file on all of us,
3:11 pm
and there's absolutely nothing we can do to stop them. these credit files go wherever we go, they follow us around, no matter what we do. and they store negative information on us for up to ten years. - that long? that's a good chunk of your life. - a very good chunk, yes. and with lenders, you cannot dictate which of the three credit reports they're going to pull when you apply for something. it is entirely up to them, you have no control how they use your credit reports, or how they use your credit scores. and by the way, you have no right to a good credit report or a good credit score. and unfortunately for many of us, the deck is stacked against us because of errors on our credit reports that are simply not our fault. - now, you were actually employed by both fico and equifax. - yes sir, that is correct. - so you have a real insider's view that few others have. - look, when a major credit story breaks, the news media calls on me to put in perspective for them. - as a top authority in the field, can you explain what credit scores actually mean?
3:12 pm
- gladly, that's actually a great question, there are two main credit score brands. one is the fico score, and one is the vantage score. and generally these two scores are going to score your credit between 300 and up to 850, and the higher your number, the less risk to credit card companies, landlords, utilities, anyone else you're doing business with. consumers with excellent credit scores, usually around 760 or higher, are given the lowest interest rates, the highest credit limits, the lowest premiums on insurance policies. but if your score is lower, as everyone out there watching probably knows, it can quickly turn into a financial nightmare, not just for you, but also for your family. in 2016 experian, one of the three national credit reporting agencies reported in their seventh annual state of credit report, that the nation's average credit score was 673, and that's based on the vantage score 3.0 model,
3:13 pm
very common, that rates credit between 300 and 850. - so a majority of americans are paying through the nose for credit. - through the nose, larry, millions of dollars more than they would if they had a higher score. and here's how they break the scores down, larry. excellent credit - 750 and above, poor credit - 649 and below. and the reality is, unless your credit is good to excellent, you're gonna be losing boatloads of money because you're simply not getting the best deals that lenders have to offer. - when we return, john ulzheimer will give you a free tool that instantly shows you all the money you're losing on the interest you'll pay. - i've worked for the post office for 28 years, i'm a 9/11 survivor, as a matter of fact. i sustained respiratory issues as a result of working during ground zero. i literally fell into very strong financial challenges
3:14 pm
to the point where it even led to homelessness and me sleeping in my van sometimes. - you have nothing, no money, no credit, nothing left, the bank took all your machinery, they come with the tow truck, you work so hard and build something and make it in life and it all gets taken away. - me and my wife were on the verge of getting divorced. money was just too much of a stress, credit couldn't do anything, you know, it was pretty much like we were working just to, to pay bills, there was no enjoyment out of anything. - i even missed a job at the hospital, they checked my credit score and because of that, even though i had the certifications to have that job, i didn't get it and it was only due to a low credit score. - john, i know that a bad credit report can prevent you from purchasing a car or home,
3:15 pm
but i never realized how much that your credit score affects the interest rates you're offered. - oh they're so important, larry, and frankly few people do. and that's why i thought it was so important to come on your show today and discuss this. you just make the assumption that you're all being treated the same, but the truth is you're not being treated the same, far from it. - let's take a phone call from erika in nashville tennessee. hi erika, you're on the phone with credit expert john ulzheimer. - [erika] hi john, you're telling me that my neighbor living right next door might be paying less money for everything that i am, just because he has a higher credit score? - not might, that's absolutely correct erika. but look, a picture is worth a thousand words, so let me show you the reality, and in a moment, i'll give you a free website where you can put in your own numbers and do this for yourself. the rates change daily, so make sure you check yours often. example, let's say you're financing $500000 for a mortgage for 30 years, a very common loan.
3:16 pm
if you're fico credit score is in the low range of 620-639, you'll be paying an interest rate of a little over 5.1% for a total amount of interest paid of over $483000. if your fico score is at the highest level, you'll pay a little over 3.5% for a total interest paid of a little over $315000 over that 30 year period. - that's almost a difference of $170000. you're paying 50% more money. - exactly right larry, for the same house. you're paying one third more for the same house. - and someone wouldn't have any idea that they're being treated so poorly because of the credit score? - no sir, they'd likely assume it's the same for everyone. they're forced to pay it because they're desperate. they want the house. - here's the website to go and run your own interest rate numbers yourselves. - look, there are no classes on credit score management
3:17 pm
at any level of academia, no one learns about this stuff in school. each one of us is left to learn through trial and error. and in the credit world, an error can lead to a seven to ten year penalty. - which credit bureaus do our viewers have to be concerned with? - yeah, now that's a great question. there are many, countless almost. but primarily only three of them really matter, equifax, transunion, and experian. - and you used to work for equifax? - yes sir, i did. these credit bureaus each maintain well over 200 million credit files, and here's the critical part larry, they do not share credit information with each other, they're competitors. so rarely are your credit reports going to be the same. - what if someone in the audience doesn't know what's on their credit reports? aren't they essentially flying blind? - yeah, no, that's absolutely well said. they are flying blind and our viewers need to know what's on their credit reports, larry, and there are a lot of services out there that unfortunately will take your money
3:18 pm
to provide that service, that are gonna want to charge you for your credit reports. do not fall for it, every year you're entitled to your free credit reports. just go to the website annualcreditreport.com. - folks write this down, knowledge is power. find out in black and white what's on your credit report. it's the first major step to making a big change for the better. - larry, you nailed it, and most people will be surprised, if not shocked what they find. you'll receive credit reports from all three of the major agencies so you compare them next to each other. - completely free? - absolutely, 100%, completely free. in fact, you can leave your credit card in your wallet, 'cause you're not gonna need it. but it's the little things that will often hurt you maybe more often. things that your audience simply is not aware of. - like what? - larry, let's say you make a light payment on your mortgage, if you pay just 30 days late, someone with credit score of 780,
3:19 pm
which is a great credit score, it will take an entire three years, three years, to recover; and that's only if you catch up that 30 day late payment. - wait a minute, three years? for one single late payment? - i know, it's hard to believe, right? and what if that 30 day late payment isn't actually correct, it's wrong? the last recognized study on credit report accuracy was performed in 2012 by the ftc, the federal trade commission, and in that study, the ftc found that one in five consumers had at least one error on their credit reports. - now that's around 50 million americans, that's a huge portion of our audience watching right now. - yeah, that's exactly right, larry. in 2015, the ftc did a follow-up study and discovered that those who reported an unresolved error on one of their credit reports, still believed that the disputed information is still inaccurate. and get this, larry, the credit reporting agencies cannot tell the difference between an accurate credit report
3:20 pm
and one that contains errors. they are not your lender, they're not the source of the information that resides on your credit reports. - so they're the warehouse? - absolutely right, they're the warehouse. and when it comes right down to it, only you, the borrower, the consumer, can tell the difference between something that's accurate and something that is inaccurate on your credit reports. and only you can ask for that false information to be corrected. - and if you don't ask, no one's gonna bother to know about it or correct the errors, and you're the one that gets penalized. - you cannot assume that your credit reports are great, just because you always pay your bills on time. the only way to know for sure, is to check them. - john, what's the craziest piece of information you've ever seen in a consumer's credit report? - well, i have actually seen, larry, credit reports showing a consumer to be dead. - and they were alive? and they had no clue that one of their lenders reported them dead to a credit bureau?
3:21 pm
- they were very much alive, and you are correct, they did not have a clue, in fact the only way they found out about it was when they went to apply for credit and the lender denied them because their credit report listed them as being deceased and of course, logically, deceased people can't apply for credit. - stefan in washington dc, you're on the line, what's your question for john? - [stefan] i've learned more about credit on your show than i ever knew. - thank you stefan, that's very nice of you. look, this stuff is not taught in schools, and when you're young and receive your first credit card, guess what's missing, there is no instruction manual that comes with it. the road to maintaining good credit is filled with landmines but it doesn't have to be that way. - [stefan] well i've got to do something to get out of my financial mess, so what's the solution? - stefan there is a solution, it's real, it's affordable, and it's so simple. john, you have found this little book credit secrets, that you believe has the power to really turn people's financial lives around. - i have. - and you're not the author of the book.
3:22 pm
- i am not, larry. - well then why would you appear on this show, talking about a book you didn't write? - larry, it's simple. you've heard just a handful of stories tonight, and there are many more. credit has been my career, almost 26 years. i know how having bad credit can affect your family, your marriage, your health, and i want people to get the help that they need inexpensively and in a way that they can really use it for great results. and look, i have seen a lot of companies in the industry promise the so-called silver bullet, miracle solution, guaranteed instant effects; and in most cases are gonna take your hard-earned money and you're gonna get very little resolved. when i sat down and read credit secrets, i felt it was the answer to most people's problems. it's so simple, that with a little bit of work and perseverance, anybody can do it, and i have seen the results. the book was written by a husband and wife, who each went through their own credit crisis, and their hard work is a gift to anyone who reads it and wants to get the credit nightmare off their back.
3:23 pm
- here's what other people just like you discovered that changed their financial life. - i've really started learning how credit works, and so what i love about credit secrets is that it gave me the tool to understand the credit game, and you can't play the game if you don't know the rules. - i started work in the program, i sent all of the letters, i did all the steps, i read the book front to back, you know, many times, and it worked. - 30 days later i saw a change, i was amazed. i was like, oh wow, my credit score is going up. - since i started this program, my transunion score was 494, today it's 722, and i'm going to build my first home. and i'm really looking forward to that. - i just went home shopping in hampton, virginia, and i will be actually closing on my first house as a first time home buyer, thanks to credit secrets. - kids are now playing soccer, playing softball,
3:24 pm
all these different things that we weren't able to afford right off the bat, but now we are. and, it's of course, made my kids extremely happy, and with the kids happy, my wife's happy, so it kind of goes in full circle. - that's quite a story, so john, you're the credit expert here, why should people buy this book now? - first, larry, you'll notice that it's small, the steps are easy for anyone to follow, no complicated credit jargon, look, let me be clear, it takes some effort, but so little compared to the results that so many people are going to receive. it is filled with important information that you can put to usele immediately and get results. it gives you all the templates you need to start the process to improve your credit, and the really great thing is you can easily do this all by yourself. - knowledge is power. - knowledge is power, exactly. look, let me give you some examples of just some of the secrets revealed in this little book that can. - you may want to jot this down at home,
3:25 pm
'cause it applies to you. - larry, the book is loaded. for example, page five reveals the key to getting anything removed from your credit report and this is not common knowledge. page six, the secret to getting banks, credit bureaus, collection agencies to feel that it's actually easier to simply remove a negative item and leave you alone. this one piece of advice is worth purchasing the book alone. - and the fact that you come from the credit scoring side of the business, then you know what's real and what isn't. - that's exactly right, larry, and look. these insider secrets are not generally known to the public. and this little book is filled with them. - it's the little book that can. - it's the little book that can, exactly. on page 20, it reveals why you may get turned down for a loan even with a good credit score. - get turned down even with good credit? - nonsensical, but it happens all the time, but now you'll know why and exactly what you can do about it. did you know that closing an unused credit card account
3:26 pm
can actually hurt your credit score? - you're kidding. a consumer tries to do a good thing, reducing their credit accounts, and it comes back to bite them? - you're exactly right, it sure can, it lets you know the secret on page 29. in addition, page 44 tells you which type of bank account you never ever want to close, even if you opened it back when you were a freshman in college. - that long ago? - credit is forever, and this is my favorite one, larry. on page 43, the simple 11 word phrase you can use that makes it so no bill collector can ever contact you again. in fact this one single phrase instantly makes it illegal for a debt collector to even dial your phone number. it instantly puts you back in control of the situation. - now that's the switch, 'cause it's usually the other way around. - it is absolutely usually the other way around, and that's the beauty of the strategy. and then on page 46, the easiest way to get a collection agency, bank, or creditor, to erase a disputed item painlessly.
3:27 pm
- what about tax leans? - tax leans are no good, and it's on page 77, how to make an erroneous tax lean disappear from your credit report, even if you haven't paid it yet. - i'm sure there are people in our audience that could certainly use that. - i wholeheartedly agree, larry. it takes a little bit of work and perseverance, but it's not that difficult. here's another gem in the book that is actually real genius. i've never seen it anywhere else. - and that would be? - most credit bureaus and creditors use an automated system for responding to requests to have item removed, but this trick on page 80 practically guarantees that an actual human being will have to review your request which dramatically increases your chances of getting the outcome that you desire. - ah, what about student loan debt? that's a big problem that keeps on getting bigger. - bigger and bigger, you're absolutely right, larry. federally guaranteed student loans have no statute of limitations, the lender can keep trying to collect them forever. even bankruptcy doesn't erase that debt.
3:28 pm
but there's hope, on page 124, you'll discover not only how to remove them from your credit reports, but also how you can temporarily suspend your payments, consolidate multiple loans into one easy and lower monthly payment, and in some cases get the loan forgiven entirely. - now that would be a huge relief for so many student debtors keeping our young people down, there's no relief. what about people who sadly have had their automobile repossessed? any hope for them? - larry, there is. pages 127-129 explains how to get your repossessed car back, while getting it taken off your credit report. - what if someone, john, has tried everything to repair their credit, and they've lost all hope. and nobody should have to live like that. - agreed, no one. but the little book that can has two easy solutions. first, there's a little-known government agency that can resolve certain disputes for you in as little as two weeks. and all it takes is a few minutes to submit a complaint at their not very well-known website from page 88.
3:29 pm
they have literally recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for consumers. and on page 154, credit secrets gives you a strategy to get out of debt without resorting to bankruptcy. and, in some cases, you can have your obligations resolved in days. - what about those in our audience with no credit who need to establish it? - well, everyone needs credit, larry, and this is the little book that can. page 147 tells you where you can apply for a visa signature rewards card with a credit limit of up to $25000, even if your credit score is in the low 500s. and on the same page, the easiest way to get a low-interest loan to pay off all of your high-interest debt. want a car but have bad credit? even if you've had previous repossession or bankruptcy, you'll plow right through those stop signs on page 153. - all of that in one little book. - and, larry, it's so much more than that. even if you have a good credit score, reading this book will most likely enable you to improve your credit scores even more,
3:30 pm
giving you even more purchasing power. - ladies and gentlemen, what's the cost of your financial peace of mind? what's a good night's sleep worth to you? if you're struggling in your financial life, this little book could be the answer to all your prayers. here's everything you'll receive. - [voiceover] first, credit secrets, the 190 page book that will dramatically change your financial life for the better. you heard from people just like you who experienced it for themselves. it's so easy, just follow the simple steps in the book, and watch your credit change in front of your eyes. you'll also get the credit secrets quick start guide, with this guide you'll be on the simple road of repairing your own credit within minutes of opening the package. it's easy as one, two, three, and so simple. you'll also receive the secret money method video course, that reveals inside information you need to secure up to $12000 of credit almost instantly. this new information shows you everything
