pickup truck that slammed into another vehicle killing two little girls. >> translator: my son was really scared to go to jail. >> reporter: outside, his relatives spoke to reporters, revealing that their family is distantly related to the cardosas, who lost both their 2-year-old and htheir 4-year-ol in the accident. >> translator: i'm so sorry for the family. maic my condolences to the family. it really hurts. >> reporter: salcedo's bail is set at more than $2 million. >> going through an intersection at 60-70 miles per hour, they're evading police and driving that fast, as everybody would know driving through an intersection with a red light is likely to result in the death of another human being. >> reporter: he is the father of

a little girl nearly 2 years old. >> he is not a monster. let me tell you guys something. he would always bring his daughter diapers. he loves his diaper. an officer called me and told me that the only person he wants to talk to is his daughter. >> reporter: as they left court, the cardosa family didn't have much to say except to mourn the two children whose organs will be donated to help save the lives of other young children. and on facebook shall t, the gi uncle says camilla's organs will be donated to help other children. just as the court hearing winding up. california highway patrol officers say enough is enough. that's heading of the chp facebook video showing a suspected drunk driver slamming into a stopped car and officers. the bay area chp is launching an immediate crackdown with all

available staff patrolling freeways looking for impaired drivers. five officers have been hit by cars while servicing motorists on the freeway. they include officer andrew camilleri, killed on christmas eve while responding to a crash on interstate 80. and officer martin lienway whose legs were broken when he was nit -- hit in a crash. the stepped-up patrols will last until the end of the month. petaluma police chased a suspect. robert moore was eventually taken into custody after he ran through an elementary school. he's accused of stealing the car while the owner was warming it up about 7:00 this morning. police say moore had several arrest warrants and prior convictions for vehicle theft. they also say if you must warm up your car before driving, lock the doors or stay within sight of it.

a standoff at a south san jose hotel is now in its 26th hour. a massive police presence remains at the windham garden inn. some hotel guests have been evacuated since this all started yesterday afternoon. still going on now. alissa harrington is live outside the hotel with the latest on this story. >> reporter: this is a multi-agency response. we've seen police, sheriff's deputies, members of the bomb squad and fire fighters to name a few. but despite the heavy presene of law enforcement, the hotel is still open, they are checking in guests and taking reservations. for more than 24 hours, a man wanted by police has been holed up inside his room at the windham gardens in south san jose, forcing officers to evacuate a whole wing of the building to keep other guests safe. hotel employees are still checking people in, like ryan demoss. >> with all these police around, you can't be any more safer than

this, right? >> reporter: he's in town from salt lake city for a business trip. >> if there's a problem here, that's what i would expect them to do. i'm glad they have their guns out and will try to shoot anybody. >> reporter: police identified a man with a warrant sunday. when they tried to contact him, he barricaded himself inside his room. >> negotiations have not been necessarily bad. we haven't made a lot of progress, but he hasn't made any threats at this point. we're continuing to negotiate. we don't want to force a confrontation with the individual. >> reporter: some evacuated guests were forced to sleep on sofas in the lobby. >> we want to go to the rooms, they tell us that's not possible. so we stay in the lobby until now. all night we have been here. >> i feel pretty safe, but i don't know what's going on up there, but i hope it's not too crazy. >> reporter: police are hopeful for a peaceful resolution. alissa harrington, abc 7 news. witnesses stepped in and

helped san francisco police catch a man wanted for attacking a store clerk. police released this video showing that hafact in -- attac in the fillmore district. he began choking the store clerk for no apparent reason. they booked him on charges of aggravated assault and burglary. in santa rosa, a reunion, homecoming, promise and life lesson wrapped into one. santa rosa or st. rose catholic school and nearby cardinal newman school opened for the first time since the devastating fires. wayne freedman has the story. >> reporter: when students, family and staff entered the gym at cardinal newman, no doubt they saw all those victory banners on the wall, but today's

curriculum for this year. at card untinal newman high sch. they're now the lasting once. a south san francisco police officer who suffered a severe head injury more than a year ago is back at work. the department posted this picture of the motorcycle officer with the caption "our hero has returned". he underwent multiple surgeries and hours of rehabilitation following the injury on thanksgiving in 2016. this surveillance video shows him chasing a suspect who then hit him with a skate board. he was caught by another officer. he is scheduled to stand trial in april. today is the first day california is issuing federal real id cards. they will need to be, many will need one by october of 2020 to fly domestically. as melanie woodrow explains, there are some restrictions. >> reporter: for some, you can never arrive too early at the

dmv. beginning october 1st, 2020, driver's licenses and identification cards will need to be real id compliant for anyone boarding a flight. >> taets first day of the rollout, and so farthings a, th going pretty smoothly. >> reporter: for several today, time was on their side. >> i'm in college right now. and my driver's license is expiring in like two weeks. i decided to wait until i could get the real id program soy wouldn't ha -- so i wouldn't have to worry about it. >> reporter: in order to obtain a real id you must physically go to the dmv, even if you already have a driver's license or id card. in order to accommodate all the extra customers, they are adding saturday office hours. customers will need to show proof of identity, proof of social security and proof of residence. >> sort of a mad rush to make

sure i have all the documents required to kploecomplete this. >> a lot of documents needed. be sure to bring backups of some of them, like social security and proof of residency. >> reporter: a marriage or divorce certificate may also be needed. there are some traffic issues in the presidio today after a tree fell onto the freeway just after 12:30 this afternoon on northbound highway 101. it landed on a bobcat tractor and part of the road. the tree was cleaned up around 2:30 and all of the lanes reopened. the roads may have been a little slick when a pickup truck ended up on its side. it caused a major backup. no word if anybody was hurt there. well, we cannot put away our

four and a half-miles from a big skydiver center, but it's not known if he was associated with that center. good news out of montecito where drivers were able to get to work using highway 101 finally. the road opened yesterday. the left is what it looked like after deadly mudslides nearly two weeks ago. the road was covered in 12 feet of mud and debris. our reporter has more on the massive reopening undertaking. >> reporter: these lanes, unrecognizable weeks ago when they were still buried under several feet of mud. >> some of those people are saying it's something that happens once in your career. >> reporter: he's talking about what his crews had to do, to not only clear the mud and debris from the january 9 slide but restripe the road. >> i won't say it was an emotional moment, but it was really something to behold, to see all of the work that took

place here, and then the end result of traffic on the freeway. >> reporter: while the highway is open, images through town haven't really changed. shops and restaurants remain closed. many roads leading to destroyed homes are still lined with mud. and many of the recovery resources we saw in this area over the past two weeks have left. despite two victims remaining unaccounted for. >> we're still very sensitive to the fact that this is still an area of a major incident and we'll work with our partners until we can get some sort of closure. >> reporter: the off-ramps here in montecito remain closed, that's because there are still so many trucks in the area doing the cleanup and recovery efforts off the freeway in these neighborhoods that still remain evacuated. it could be months before there is a full sense of normalcy for these people who did not lose their homes and want to return and call this area home. reporting in

ro roblis. kill a police dog, face a felony. they are trying to make it an automatic felony. one lawmaker says at least ten police dogs were killed over the past five years. >> the risk that a k-9 is at is equal to that of a police officer. they put their lives on the line every day out there, whether it's a sheriff's deputy or chp officer or a police officer. >> police dogs are a major investment of taxpayer money. some agencies spend up to $10,000 to purchase a police dog and up to $100,000 for training. netflix is now worth $100 billion. after a strong earnings report, the los gatos company reported today it add 8.3 million new subscribers in the final months of last year.
