backups. we'll check on that in a couple minutes. frightening moments for people in alaska this morning after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit just off the coast of kodiak. the quake triggered a tsunami warning for the entire west coast. there was a warning for alaska, canada, and then we had that watch in effect for washington, oregon, and california. authorities in the bay area were taking no chances. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live in santa cruz with the preparations. tiffany? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. we've moved to the upper harbor. this is an area that was just destroyed by the 2011 tsunami, and here i want you to take a look behind me. there's hardly a ripple. this morning we have not seen any major waves but it was a very tense morning for folks who live onboard boats in the harbor. the harbor master went around boat to boat giving warnings

there could be a tsunami coming and that they should be prepared. today the national weather service says that the west coast will be spared. there's not expected to be any damage or destruction. the harbor master did take other precautions like turning off the gas stock to alleviate any potential fuel leaks and alerted staff like the dredge crews and brought them in as needed. the biggest waves were predicted between 5:30 and 6:15 this morning. authorities expect there will be some extra currents in the water and are advising people to exercise some caution by the ocean but, again, as you can tell right here the upper harbor everything is very calm and we have not seen any significant waves or ripples to speak of. live in santa cruz, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. all right, tiffany, thank you. chp has a zero tolerance campaign in response to the recent accidents that have injured officers and left one dead. dozens gathered at city hall for a vigil honoring victims of

deadly traffic collisions. the wife and daughter of fallen chp officer andrew camilleri received a plaque recognizing his service. you may remember officer camilleri was killed on christmas eve on 880 in hayward but a suspected impaired driver. >> now i don't get to see him on a daily basis because someone made a very poor choice. we're all grieving. we might as well grief together and be each other's comfort. >> the chp's enough is enough campaign runs through the end of the month. officers will be on the lookout to stop impaired drivers before they hurt themselves or others. the family of a man accused of causing a crash that killed two girls says he is related to the victims. abc 7 news was in martinez where saucedo made his first appearance. they say he was driving a stolen truck in antioch when he ran a red light and slammed into another truck carrying a family. a 4-year-old and 2-year-old died in the crash.

his girlfriend says he has a little girl of his own and his family says they are distantly related to the cardozas. his sister did not want her face shown. >> even if it was family it hurts because they're little girls. it's a family that's been struck by a tragedy and nothing or anything we could say or do can bring that back. >> he loves his daughters. an officer called and told me the only person he wants to talk to is his daughter. >> his family says he is not a criminal and his behavior changed after he started using drugs. the city of san francisco has settled a federal lawsuit with the family of a guatemalan immigrant shot and killed in 2015. his parents filed a suit alleging eyewitness accounts and other evidence do not support the explanation police fired on him in self-defense. they say officers responded to a report of a man allegedly perez lopez, wielding a knife, chasing another man near folsom and 24th. the terms of the settlement are not being made public.

happening today a manager who quit oakland's restaurant is planning a news conference. >> emily hayward is one of six who resigned amid the controversy. hayward's attorney says she can no longer endure the toxic environment. last week several employees demanded the owner divest from his company or they would quit. he has denied the allegations made by 17 employees. a youth pastor accused of sending sexually explicit photos to a 13-year-old girl. police are looking for more victims now. they arrested 24-year-old luis cruzcruz of fremont. he sent several photos of himself to a girl who is a member of his congregation. our media partner ""the mercury news"" reports evidence on his phone shows he may have sent pictures to other minors. the san francisco board of supervisors will take up a measure to change columbus day to indigenous people's day,

two bay area men whose identified have not been revealed. a man was found unresponsive in the water off kamaole beach park iii on saturday. he had been snorkeling with friends about 20 yards offshore when they noticed he wasn't moving. now thursday beachgoers found a 50-year-old man from oakland floating face down in knee deep water. he was pronounced dead at the scene. a bill to protect policeani. the bill would make the intentional harming of a police dog or horse an automatic felony. one lawmakers says at least ten police dogs were killed over the last five years. some agencies spend up to $10,000 to purchase a police dog and up to $100,000 for the training. rupert murdoch says facebook should pay media companies for providing trusted news on the network, how pay tv systems pay broadcasters and cable channels. it follows mark zuckerberg's

petaluma. better in the east bay and temperatures look like this, 46 in san jose. 45 in sunnyvale. temperatures around the water in the upper 40s, alameda and san francisco. 30s in napa and novato. so skipping forward to tomorrow where we're going to look at a pretty healthy storm headed our way. here it is 8:30 in the morning knocking on the door of sonoma county and then by 1:30 pretty heavy rain from santa rosa to marin pushing through san francisco. it takes us through the wednesday evening commute, 6:00. you can see it is a mess in the east bay and the south bay. that's not the end of it, though. we'll get some cold air and plenty of showers behind it on thursday. look at the rainfall estimates through thursday night. we're looking at an inch up in the north bay from santa rosa, novato, nearly that in san francisco. hayward and concord, maybe a half inch in the south bay.

near 60-mile-an-hour winds and two feet of snow in some spots. 19 inches in kirkwood. 25 inches in blue canyon. back home today the accuweather seven-day forecast will feature drier days like today with 56 in san francisco. 57 in concord. we only have two rainy days. tomorrow a 2. thursday the showers will end but it will be cool. sue? just checked the chain requirements for lake tahoe and highways 80 and 50 are chain free right now, no issues. let's check back closer to home the east shore freeway and that is getting more crowded on into emeryville with speeds slowing now to about 35 to 45 miles an hour. once you funnel in to the mcarthur maze and head to points beyond 580, 880 and 24 perhaps, you are looking good in those directions. some slow traffic out there with leaving oakland on 880.

this is one exception. we do have still an accident blocking a lane of traffic here southbound near high street. and if we zoom in and check it out you can see the speeds now slowing to below five miles an hour, squeaking by and then once you're past the scene it does pick up a bit and then continues slow past highway 92 into hayward. >> thanks, sue. in oklahoma the search continues for five people missing after the drilling rig they were working on exploded. >> this was the scene early yesterday morning it the eastern oklahoma town of quinton about 100 miles southeast of tulsa. flames and smoke from the explosion at a natural gas site could be seen for miles. 22 people were on the rig when the incident happened. one had to be flown to the hospital for burns. the fire is out now. crews are still on scene, though, in case the rig reignites. imagine if your car windows could generate electricity. could generate electricity. that may be a woman: so, greg, it's a lot to take in. woman 2: and i know that's hard to hear,

there were rumors he would leave the social media company to perhaps take a job at sofi based here in san francisco. we haven't confirmed that yet. but he has decided to leave the social media giant. he is considered a key part of the company's leadership team. it'll be interesting to see how twitter's stock holds up today. shares slid more than 3% before the opening bell this morning and yesterday twitter stock slipped more than 1% on just the speculation that he would leave. we'll be watching that today. back to you. thank you, jessica. a bay area based bike rental company is expanding to the east bay. it will deploy 500 bikes throughout the business center in walnut creek. the dockless bikes are enabled with gps, wireless technology and self-activating locks. that means you can basically park and pick up the bikes anywhere. the company operates in 30 cities including south san

hi, everyone. a breaking news update if you're just waking up. that tsunami watch for the west coast has been canceled. maybe you saw the alert on your phone or even on your television. the watch here for the california coast is over. it was issued overnight after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of kodiak, alaska. look at this. residents there forced to evacuate overnight. long lines of cars were trying to get out of kodiak, alaska. so far no reports of any damage, no reports of any injuries. that is good news. the earthquake hitting the gulf of alaska about 1:30 this morning. look at that light swinging back and forth. people felt it. there was a tsunami generated by the earthquake and it poses no threat now to any part of the west coast. only an advisory left for the area near kodiak, alaska.

we do have a reporter in santa cruz this morning, tiffany wilson, there talking to harbor patrol. they had a tough morning waking up people making sure everything was okay. they expect some big waves later this morning. we'll have a report later on this newscast. back to you. a new push from the group that wanted to keep the raiders in oakland. >> they're hoping for an into opportunity to keep football in the east bay. reporter amy hollyfield live at the team's practice facility in alameda. >> reporter: they do not give up. you can say that about this group. they have an 8:30 press conference scheduled to announce their latest efforts to keep the team here. the group is called we stand with oakland. a spokesperson says they are watching a legal case in st. louis where a group is suing the rams and the nfl for the relocation to l.a. it looks like it might go to trial.

disneyland was symbolic because it's where dreams come true. 6:34 and happening today two members of the san francisco board of supervisors plan to announce legislation they want to provide more money to legal defense and outreach. supervisor sandra lee and hillary roman will introduce legislation on the steps of city hall at noon in response to the recent threats of i.c.e. raids. outreach efforts for immigrant communities. 39-year-old alfonso nunez is charged with raping, assaulting, and robbing four victims. detectives say he drove women to their homes and then assaulted them there. officials say he is a mexican citizen and in the u.s. illegally, deported from new mexico in 2005. he pled not guilty to all the charges. bail set at nearly $1.5 million. a standoff in the south bay has ended. police took the suspect into

custody at 12:30 this morning. >> a man with outstanding felony warrants on silicon valley boulevard on sunday. officers finally arrested the suspect. when they tried to contact him, he barricaded himself in his room. officers had to evacuate an entire wing to keep other guests safe. some forced to sleep on sofas in the lobby. the hotel continued to operate. good morning to you, waking up to fog around the bay. live doppler 7 where you can see the cloud cover, the rain yesterday, temperature and dew points are about the same. with all that moisture we have a quarter to half-mile visibility in the north bay. check out this view. so caution is advised on the roadways, across the bay if you're taking the ferries, mass transit. things look good. 41 half moon bay.

roadways. metering lights are on. if you can car-pool we watch those cars going by at the limit with no delay. we did have a stall blocking a lane of traffic. your commute from san francisco jammed up. an earlier accident still blocking a lane. you can see traffic stacked up to 980 and an accident in the northbound direction near 66 near the coliseum. so both directions through oakland very slow. speeds at least southbound slowing to below five miles an hour and then 15 here as well. as you make your way southbound past 92 all the way into hayward and fremont. it's living up to its nasty name. all right, sue. santa rosa police looking for a

group of robbers who busted into a home one wearing a shirt that said sheriff. this happened in the neighborhood known as the wright area action group early sunday morning. police say a resident got woken up by three to four people at the door demanding money. he was either knocked out or passed out. when he came to the suspects had disappeared. marijuana had been cultivated at that house. investigators believe it may be linked to the attempted robbery. it's unclear if anything was taken. 6:39. allegations of sexual misconduct by employees at presentation high school in san jose. alumni from the all girls catholic school are launching their own website to tell their stories of sexual misconduct. the 17 alumni allege eight teachers and coaches are involved in sending elicit text messages as well as making lewd comments directed towards students. the school principal said all reports of sexual harassment that she received were handled properly by the school administration. happening today the remains of the san francisco man killed in the korean war will be buried with full military honors.

22-year-old army first class james leonard was reported killed in action in july of 1950. his remains were not found or even identified until last year. the army brought him home on sunday at sfo. leonard will be buried alongside his family at holy cross. a san francisco police officer who had a severe head injury is back at work. the department posted this picture of motorcycle officer robby chan with the caption our hero has returned. he underwent multiple surgeries and hours of rehab following the injury on thanksgiving in 2016. and this surveillance video shows him chasing a suspect who then hit him with a skateboard. that suspect was caught by another officer. a move by the trump administration means the price of solar panels could be going up. >> and there's a petition to celebrate a former member of metallica here in the bay area. and this is incredible. if you want to make $160,000 a year you need to send your

the california dmv began issuing federal real i.d. cards yesterday. not everyone is welcoming them. beginning october 1st, 2020, drivers licenses and i.d. cards will need to be real i.d. compliant if you want to board a domestic flight. passports, military i.d. cards and other i.d.s will still be accepted at the airport. they are deemed more secure by tsa but some are concerned about privacy. >> the main point of the real i.d. act is to threaten and intimidate states into participating in a national i.d. database and probably could and would use that for immigration enforcement, witch-hunting of people whose citizenship would be challenged. >> to get a real i.d. you have to physically go to a dmv field office, bring a proof of identity and residency. you can choose between getting the current license and the new real i.d.s.

well, traffic is moving smoothly on the freeway split in san francisco this morning after an accident left a car upside-down. and here is a picture of the car tweeted out by the sf fire department. this happened shortly before 10:00 on 280 northbound. three lanes were blocked for about an hour and at least one person hurt. netflix is out tens of millions of dollars because of kevin spacey. the company says it took an unexpected $39 million charge for content that it has decided not to move forward with. netflix didn't specify what the content is. cnn reports the charge is from costs associated with ending "house of cards" and not moving forward with the release of a biopic both starring spacey who was accused of sexual misconduct late last year. sno ♪ i'll be what i am a solitary man ♪ >> neil diamond says he will retire from touring because of a
