live where you live, this is abc 7 news. an incoming storm ranks a 2 on the storm impact scale, and a live look outside right now, you can see it. it is still a little sunny through the exploratory camera, but the clouds are already rolling in. thank you for joining us. the weather message here, be prepared for wet weather on the commute tonight and if you're going out this evening. meteorologist mike nicco is tracking the storm for us, mike? >> hi, everybody, expanding upon the scale as we are on storm watch for the storm moving into the north bay with light rain right now. it will be moderate moving across the neighborhoods from north to south. in the afternoon and early evening hours, breezy conditions, up to 35 miles per hour.

don't expect much in the way of damage. we significant amounts of snow too. you can see heading towards geyserville, that's the leading edge of the wet weather. the heaviest rain is up to the north. heading out this afternoon? oh, it's going to be poor because of the rain spreading south. window closing if you want to get outside to exercise in the dry weather. dangerous in the sierra after 5:00. as far as the commute goes, there's going to be ponding. it's poor. caution needed. take the umbrella. you may get wet on mass transit, and small craft advisory for the bay because it's welt and windy there. how much rain will we get? that's coming up. developing news coming down in the last 90 minutes. the former sports doctor accused of molesting 150 girls and women learned his fate. the judge told him he'll spend the next 40 to 175 years in prison. erupting in applause after the sentence was handed down after days of emotional victim testimonies. nassar spoke to the judge before receiving his sentence. >> your words these past several days, your words, your words have had a significant emotional effect on myself that shook me to my core. i also recognize what i'm feeling pails in comparison to the pain, trauma, and emotional destruction that all of you are feeling. there are no words that can describe the depth and breath of how sorry i am for what has occurred. >> well, the judge told him he's not owned up to what he's done, and added, she would not send her dogs to him for treatment. 20/20 will dedicate an entire

hour to the trial this friday at 10:00 p.m. followed by abc news at 11:00. in san fransisco, the city woke up to its third mayor in three weeks. it was a chaotic night inside of city hall and calls of racism and sexism. amy hollyfield spoke to the mayor moments ago and is live in city hall, hi, amy. >> reporter: we spent the morning here, and i have to say, city hall's in a bit of disbelief this morning, the talk of the hallways, with many offices telling us as we walked in, we don't know quite yet what's going on. it was quite a night last night. give us time to get organized. we caught up with the interim mayor who is here on the job. we actually saw him dashing into one of his very first meetings as interim mayor. take a look. it's one of the -- if you blink, you miss it. he's headed into, in this shot, a meeting with his department heads. we saw the fire and police chiefs here, public works, all telling us the mood was upbeat

and forward looking. we heard applause coming from the meeting, and he talked to us after the meeting. he said the focus is on services like police and potholes running a city. he will need to appoint, though, his replacement on the board of supervisors. >> my goal is over the next half year to continue to serve the residents of san francisco, government will continue to work as it has been, continue to deliver everything we have been delivers and look forward to the future. that's the important thing. >> your replacement and when that could come? >> this is so fresh in our heads. it's not been 24 hours. we'll address that in due time. that's the obligations coming up shortly. >> reporter: he is taking the place of an african-american woman, london breed, who was interim mayor when ed lee died last month. she held the job until the board could vote on an interim mayor, which it did last night. some of her supporters yelled, shame on you, to the board, calling them racist and sexist

for voting her out. she is running for mayor in june. ferrell is not. he'll be a caretaker mayor. he's not running. the deadline has already passed so he cannot file to run. we are hearing he's planning to address the media, give a longer press conference later today, and so stay with abc 7 news as we continue to follow this story. live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> hearing those first words from the new mayor, thank you so much. uc students learn if they have another tuition hike. uc regions are expected to vote on the proposal today, and they are considering a 2.5% hike. if approved, it starts in the fall, amounting to $350 more for students in the upcoming academic year. the regions already approved a similar increase last year. this morning, the lieutenant governor released a statement saying that he is opposed the hike, reading in part, for the uc to vote on fees before sacramento begins budget

discussions is strategically short sided and gives sacramento a good reason to address chronic under funding of higher education. this is a live picture of the toll plaza. would you pay $9 rather than $6 to cross the bay bridge? we've been tracking this proposed hike for you that would apply to all bay area bridges other than the golden gate. they will decide today whether the proposal will end up on the june ballot. this would increase for six years with $1 through 202 pennsylvan2025. this would help buy hundreds of rail cars to keep up with increasing ridership. a woman live streamed a crash that killed her sister. this 18-year-old sanchez from stockton changed her plea from not guilty to no contest of charges of dui.

another passenger was hurt in the crash in july. sanchez is expected to be sentenced to six years in prison next month. happening right now, a group of protesters are gathering at google headquarters in mountain view, protesting the planned expansion into san jose with concerns over traffic and affordable housing. our reporter is live for us at the google plex in mountain view where it's just now getting underway. >> reporter: that's right. this protest is about to get underway here at the googleplex. they are waiting for more protesters to arrive. these are san jose residents worried about google's plans to build in san jose and problems it could cause. the group wants them to be a good neighbor and concerned the megacampus in san jose leads to increased rents, evictions, and homelessness. they held three town hall meetings, and activists said google has not attended a single one. google is currently in negotiations with the city of san jose to buy public land to

build a campus near a major transit hub. >> we have not had meaningful engagement with google from the community. they don't come to us, we'll go to them. that's why we are here to deliver a letter with our demands and request them to really engage with us and let them know, we're not going >> reporter: the group is demanding google provide a community administered housing fund requiring 25% of residential response.

the city council will do negotiations with google. reporting live from mountain view, nbc 7 news. >> thank you. we have new details this morning on the three alarm fire that burned several businesses in san francisco. fire officials say the roof collapsed in the end of the fire fight. we were at west portal avenue this morning, and you can see the caution tape in front of the damaged businesses there. investigators are still trying fire. it started around 10:45 last night. flames quickly spread through four buildings. in the end, a hardware store, salon, and newspaper store burned including a vacant building. will president trump have to answer questions about the russian investigation? the southern california couple accused of torturing their children are in court. toys "r" us plans to close dozens of

kentucky police have not released a motive behind the high school shooting that left two students dead and 18 hurt yesterday morning at marshall county high school in benton, 120 miles northwest of nashville. a first responder who found a victim thought she was his daughter. >> one of the first troopers to arrive on the scene saw the young lady that died there on the scene and thought it was his daughter. because she had been dropped off at the school that morning as well. same clothing description.

campaign despite saying this. >> i did not have communications with the russians. >> reporter: this morning, news also breaking that another key player in the trump campaign, rick gates, hired a new attorney who has a track record of negotiating plea deals, and sources with knowledge of the matter telling abc news mueller indicated to trump's lawyers his office will seek answers directly from the president. abc news confirmed a growing roster of interviews in mueller's team conducted last year, including cia director mike popeo, dan coates, and national security agent, mike rogers. james comey was interviewed last december. >> the president wants to see this end and wants to see them finally come to the same conclusion that i think most everyone in america has, that there is nothing to this. >> reporter: the problem is, every time we're told it's a nothing, another tentacle on the octopus comes out and more and more information is revealed. i think the average american, even the trump voter wants to

plans to close at least 180 stores, many right here in california. the move is part of the chain's ongoing bankruptcy reorganization. the closures are not definite right now. some may still be avoided if toys "r" us can negotiate better leases. here are the bay area locations currently in jeopardy, though. pinoe, pittsburgh, san rafael, brentville, and two locations in san jose. going out of business sales are set to begin next month, and stores are slated to close in april. united is making some changes to compete with low budget airlines like spirit. united says it will add larger aircrafts to its network and expand its basic economy class to new routes, and you may remember, basic economy passengers are not assigned seats until check-in and can't store a bag in the overhead bin, but starting this year, there's a change to that as well. united says basic economy passengers can pre-select seats if they pay some extra money. well, fire and furry by michael wolffe sold 1.7 million

look at the temperatures, low to upper 50s. now, the light to moderate rain move into all neighborhoods other than the south bay by four. it's lighter as 8:00, and showers at 10:00. it's cooler tomorrow morning, especially in the north bay, upper 30s in the valleys. rest of us at 45. san francisco warmer at 47 degrees. here's the setup. this is act one, the cold front comes through today for the steadier, light to moderate rain, and the area of low pressure comes through tomorrow, bringing a cold unstable air mass, cold enough for thunderstorms with the small hail. this is how it plays out hour by hour, 12:00 to 4:00, the green's light, the yellow and orange, moderate. you can see the steadier, moderate rain moving into the south bay throughout the evening commute, but pockets of moderate rain well behind it up to santa rosa. at 11:00, we transition to the

lighter rain, just a few pockets, not steady, but a few pockets of moderate, and overnight, scattered showers, same for the commute, but the snow level drops down to 3500 feet, a dusting on hamilton, and you can see scattered showers throughout the rest of the day. i'm looking at are everybody driving on wet streets in the evening commute. also, for tomorrow morning's commute, and scattered showers make it spotty for tomorrow evening's commute. a look at tahoe, they need more snow. starting at noon today, there's a winter storm warning for the western slope. one to two feet above 3,000 feet. it's dangerous to drive through there after 5:00 tonight through friday morning. you want to avoid that. here's the seven-day forecast. you are looking at temperatures that are going to be in the 50s tomorrow, even though showers will continue all the way up until about midnight. showers are gone friday. the mid to upper 50s are still around. you can see the 60s return saturday, sunday, monday, and
