bay. amy holyfield hosted this from contra costa county. and jeanine de la hailstorm just passed by her as well. >> here's a looping radar showing these patches of green that were fierce and furious at times, producing lightning strikes and those hailstones to which you referred, walnut sized hail in gilroy today, and dime-sized to pea-sized hail in some locations. little breaks of sunshine here and there, so the showers are not very widespread but some of these little patches of green contain brief downpours. so for the remainder of the evening and the night, this storm ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. we'll continue to see scattered showers with a chance of more rail and thunderstorms and maybe some high elevation snow. here's forecast animation starting at 5:00 this afternoon.

there's another wave of showers beginning to sweep through the bay area, right around 7:00 p.m., down through the north bay, down through the peninsula over to the south bay and the east bay. and tomorrow the day will begin with mainly clear skies. but how long will that last? we'll have the accuweather 7-day forecast in just a moment. check out this view from atop mt. hamilton. it's hard to see, but if you look really closely, you can see some snow at the top, just a dusting. >> the storm has christian mentioned has brought a good amount of snow, up to the sierra, that is terrific news for ski resorts and retailers here in the bay area. nbc news reporter jonathan bloom live in san rafael with that part of the story. jonathan? >> reporter: it's so businessy they actually had to bring in

after fire ravaged their homes. about 9,000 residents are waiting for an all clear. cleanup and utility crews are still working to clear tons of mud and restore services. many will return to destroyed or uninhabitable homes. a brentwood man was involved in an accident near antioch. officers say a honda civic veered across the double yellow line and into oncoming traffic and hit two cars. a 73-year-old man was driving and died at the scene. california department of fish and wildlife are now investigating the shooting of a river otter. the animal was so badly wounded, he had to be euthanized. >> reporter: and folks here are outraged about it. the otter was found in this field on sunday, it was coughing, it could not breathe

and it was in bad shape. when veterinarians got a chance to examine it, they found what may have been pellets or shotgun shot in it. that is why a criminal investigation has been launched. the north american river otter is a mammal that can grow to weigh 30 pounds and livers near lakes and streams, lately some have been showing up around heather farms park. >> they're swimming around and chagsing the fish and having a good time. >> john and donna see them when they're walking their dogs. >> it just breaks my heart to think that someone would try to kill and just maim one. >> reporter: those white dots are possibly bebes or shotgun shots and left the animal critically injured. >> he had broken teeth and something was going on in his mouth that wasn't right, his left eye was actually completely blind and in the wild, that's just not a recipe for him to be able to survive.

>> reporter: the otter was found near the shadelands in lindsay creek, it was rushed to the wildlife hospital where it was decided that it was better to euthanize it. >> it's horrifying for us when something like this comes in. people just don't understand what they're doing when they do something like this. >> reporter: fish and wildlife has now launched an animal cruelty investigation. in the meantime, anyone with information is asked to call the department of fish and wildlife. in the meantime, locals are outraged at whoever pulled the trigger. >> they've got a very sick sense of survivability. >> reporter: fish and wildlife has what they call a cal tip hot line for anyone who has information of what may have happened to what animal. if you didn't get a chance to write that down, we will post it on our website so anyone who knows anything about it can inform authorities. live in walnut creek, eric

state of the state address, one of the longer ones of his career, he focused on his legacy bill, the gas tax. >> fighting the gas tax may appear to be good politics but it isn't. i will do earning in my power to defeat any effort to repeal it. >> reporter: while people on both sides of the aisle praised the economic health of the state, both sides voiced their opposition to the tax. >> people should not have to pay 12 cents more for gas and higher registration fees. it's just wrong. it puts more pressure on the lower and middle class in california and we need to provide them some relief. >> reporter: bay area transportation officials say the gas tax is needed to fix our crumbling roads. governor brown also spoke about high-speed rail, climate change and the need for california to be prepared when natural disasters strike. the governor, taking a moment to soak in his final report to the

has this season's flu reached it's peak? some local health departments caution don't be too optimistic because the flu is set to surge. >> leann, they are really pushing this flu vaccine, yes? >> reporter: absolutely, you know this health fair started at 3:00 this afternoon, so you still have time. they're going to be here until 6:00. and when you get here, you're going to get a full medical exam and as you said, larry, they're really pushing that flu vaccine. this yearly health fair is a service offered to the contra costa county community. >> we are ready to serve the community today and provide this service at no cost. >> reporter: this year is county is making an extra effort to urge people to get a free flu vaccine. the state number is 74 have died

from the virus. now the contra costa health department say new cases have slightly tapered off. but that comes with a big warning. because the flu virus is so unpredictable, there could be another surge. >> it's hard to know what the trend is until we have at least a few weeks of data. >> reporter: influenza viruses are constantly changes. >> the viruses that are circulating can change. right now there's one predominantly, but that could change to a different department. >> reporter: health departments are still recommending a flu shot, even this late in the year, washing your hands and staying home if you're sick will help stop the spread of the flu. >> winter has a funny way of sticking around or hanging around for a while, so it's a good opportunity if you haven't done it to do it now. >> reporter: so far the centers for disease control and prevention describe this flu season as moderately severe. again, a reminder you still have

time, they will be here until 6:00 this evening. now tomorrow, we're waiting, those numbers, those flu numbers for the state come out tomorrow. i'm live in less th melendez. a new free app to tree depression. it's called woe bot. it's designed to help people cope with depression and anxiety. it's programmed to give scripted responses. the creator says woe bot is nbon meant to replace an in person therapist. the students who used the app saw a significant reduction in depression symptoms. a 5.8 magnitude effort quake happened about five miles away

from fern dale. the second quake a 5.0 hit about an hour later, no reports of damage. scientists working on an earthquake early warning system plan to start a major test later this year, that test will be done in southern california but it should pave the way for an eventually mass rollout. we got a preview in menlo park. >> reporter: the long anticipated shake alert system will start to roll out in los angeles, where city workers will be notified seconds before they begin feeling the ground shake, the length of the advance warning will depend on the distance from the epicenter. while beta testing has been under way since 2012, mass communication with the public over mobile phones is three to five years off. >> that three to five-year timeline is what the cell companies say it will take to accomplish mass alerting. >> reporter: if trains are slowed down or stopped or

students at school would know to take cover. the projected cost is $38 million, yet the network of sensors required to cover the entire west coast is only 48% completed. >> when shake alert eventually gets down to the individual level, one of the challenges will be to get people to respond to an alert. unlike what happens when people hear a fire alarm go off. many people just stay in place, assuming it's a false alarm. >> doug given, the coordinator of the system said the system could send out false alarms it detects seismic activity. >> entertainment venn view, at what point do you tell the crowd that they're about to shake, that's not my decision to make, that's the decision probably of lawyers and sociologists. >> those are issues that will be addressed as southern california begins testing shake alert.

bay. this looks like the same view, looking at probably the same clouds from a different angle, from the east bay hills camera. it's 50 degrees in santa rosa, napa 54, and 55 at napa. we'll see the chance for some more scattered showers tonight, partial clearing tomorrow, then we'll have a drier milder pattern. the storm we have still ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. it will be with usthrough the nighttime aurs, scattered showers may still fall. and even high elevation snow as that cold air comes in, snow levels will drop down to about 4,000 feet. around 7:00 or so, we'll see another little wave of showers moving through, and after that, it's all going to sort of wind don and weaken and dissipate and during the overnight hours,

we'll see some partial clearing at least, and tomorrow will begin as a mainly sunny day, but quite chilly in the early morning hours. low 30s in the north bay valleys, right around the bay we'll see low temperatures right around the 40-degree mark, and then tomorrow's highs will be mainly mid to upper 50s, but in the south bay a little bit milder. a high of 60 degrees in san tomorrow. and looking out at the sierra, a winter storm warning remains in effect there until 8:00 tomorrow morning. we may see an additional 6 to is inches of additional snow. up to 18 inches of additional snow in the highest peaks. winds up to 60 miles an hour, whiteout conditions in some places. here's the accuweather 7-day forecast, partly cloudy tomorrow, although we'll see a good measure of summer. then it starts to get a little bit milder over the weekend, on sunday, we'll see inland highs in the mid to upper 60s.

this afternoon. this is video from petaluma where one neighborhood was caught in a downpour of centimeter sized hail just an hour ago. spencer christian has more details about the storm ranking 1 on the storm impact scale will hang around through tonight. abc "world news tonight" tweets about an historic decision to send an aircraft carrier to vietnam. the planned visit will likely anger china, which is critical of u.s. moves to strengthen its military presence in that region. a department of justice watch dog says it has declared thousands of missing text messages between two senior fbi officials that were critical of president donald trump. >> reporter: well, a number of republicans including president trump have used these missing

text messages and others critical of mr. trump during the campaign as a way to undermine special counsel robert mueller's probe. missing fbi texts at the center of a republican uproar has been found. some republicans raised concern that there were five months of missing texts from the fbi system. president trump called it one of the biggest stories in a long time. the justice department blamed it on a technical glitch, affecting multiple fbi devices. the justice department's inspector general now tells congress it recovered missing texts between paige and strzok from that five-month span using forensic tools. the white house reacted. >> it's good they have recovered some of those messages, what's important is do they reveal political bias.

investigation, of course president trump recently said he would be willing to speak with special counsel robert mueller under oath, but that the interview would be subject to the advice of his attorneys and of course his attorneys are saying something very interesting this afternoon. >> reporter: that's right, the president first revealed that he would be willing to sit down with special counsel robert mueller under oath right before he left for davos, but his lawyers are saying not so fast, today the president's personal lawyer john dowd said that he not the president will be deciding whether or not he sits down with mueller, says dowd, i am his hour. >> some people interpret that as political cover. very interesting stuff, thank you. president trump says his visit to the world economic forum in davos, switzerland has been productive so far. president trump met with teresa may and prime minister netanyahu. he said that palestinians must

return to peace talks in order to receive u.s. aid money. and mr. trump also met with global business leaders overdinner and urged them to invest in america. >> a lot of people are coming back to the united states, we are seeing tremendous investment. today's been a very exciting day and great for our country. thank you very much. >> and today the british government said president trump will visit the uk sometime later this year. john kerry may be considering a run at president in 2020. an israeli newspaper reports the former secretary of state told palestinian officials he's strongly considering a run for the office. kerry who's now 74 years old had previously said he considered a run in 2016, of course democracies you remember, kerry ran in 2004, but he lost to george w. bush. oprah winfrey says she's not interested in a 2020 presidential run. that's according to an interview

in "in style" magmagazine. she said i don't have any interest or the dna for it. the doomsday clock keeps on clicking. today the atomic scientists moved the clock forward a little bit more, another 30 seconds, now at two minutes to midnight. midnight represents imminent nuclear doom. the last time this clock was this close to midnight was 1953. the clock was created more than 70 years ago by a team of atomic scientists who wanted to gauge how soon we would destroy our planet. a deputy shot and killed in the line of duty in colorado. one suspect is under arrest this evening but investigators are still searching for two others. >> reporter: a glowing procession of officers in colorado mourning one of their own. 31-year-old adams county sheriff's deputy heath gum was

responding to a call outside of denver, running after one of the suspects when police say that that man opened fire shooting gum in the chest. >> it's with great sadness that we report that our deputy was transported and pronounced dead at the hospital. >> dearing was chased through a neighborhood and finally arrested. but two other suspects considered potentially armed and danger got away, deputies still going door to door to track them down. >> they looked in my yard and in my trucks. >> reporter: this comes a month after another police officer was killed by a suspect. gum is now the fourth officer to die in the line of duty in this country already this year. and gum had been on the force since 2012, we're told he leaves behind a wife and family. marcie gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. paris is on high alert due to flooding. rising waters in the same river

eat romaine. two have died. consumer reports have also dropped it's lettuce warning. there have been no new cases in the past two weeks. the canadian government declared the warning over last week. google wants to make ill a little less creepy to browse the web, it will remind users to mute reminder ads, that seem to follow you around and show you the item long after you have already bought the item. that daily cup of joe seems more important to many americans than actually saving for retirement. the new survey from investing app acorn say that 30% of americans spent more on coffee in the past year than on

as you know, san francisco is a melting pot of native and new residents and the city has a bunch of nicknames and not all of them are popular. it's not frisco, but san francisco. public relations just released a survey about the multitude of names that people use when they refer to the city. and curtis spare is joining us in the studio. i was surprised at the intensity of emotion of everyone. you did a survey, we're doing a live poll that people can see here at the bottom of the screen. and the question is, which you can take part in right now, the question is what do you call the

city? san francisco? frisco? or san fran? you can keep voting while we talk. let's see how the results we get here on live television matchup with your survey. what did you get? >> when you ask people overwhelmingly what you call san francisco and you only call it that, we got 75%, we got 4% for frisco and 1% for san fran. then we asked people, let's say you slipped ofup, let's say you want to call it something else. if you want to call it other things, the city would be next and then s.f. and then san fran. >> i was just surprised as i wand eered around the newsroom, one person said san francisco, and a native said never call it san fran. >> i think why people say that

is that people don't like it when you give them a nickname that they don't like. when you say san fran, they're implying a sense of intimacy that doesn't really exist. that's part of it. but the other part of it came all the way from the playground when you were teased for how yow look to presidential politics. >> san francisco which was the winner. it really seems to vary between residents, nonresidents and those in the bay area and outside california. >> uh-huh it sure does. and what we did is, we asked people in the bay area what they called it as well as people outside. and we did ask people in the bay area, what did they find offputting? and what would they never say? and, you know, the number one offputting one was a term term r was coined a long time ago called baghdad by the bay, which described what he first thought
