today. people definitely got drenched in oakland. look at that, heavy rain and hail, you can even hear it. also came down here. the umbrellas were out in walnut creek and tricky. >> abc7 news meteorologists are tracking what's happening on live doppler 7. sandy, a strange day? >> it's been an exciting day from a weather perspective. dan and kristen, let me show you what it looks like on live doppler 7. i want to take you to the south bay right now, street level radar where we're seeing pockets of light rain from chester avenue, to saratoga and chesterton park. we go over to mt. hamilton, also in the hills north of mt. hamilton. clover dale right now, light rain to moderate rain, and then

you see just above lake county there, we're seeing some snow falling, it is accumulating, hail is coming down, pelting parts of bay area, you may have seen it, there were thunderstorms as you know that moved across the region, and they are continuing to keep us in an unsettled pattern, as you look at the storm impact scale, this is a level 1 throughout the night. scattered showers and still a chance of hail and thunderstorms along with high elevation snow. i'll let you know if this will hang around through the weekend or if it will clear out. video from all over the bay area this afternoon, this one was in santa rosa about 10:00 this morning, and then a few minutes later, a rainbow. a marine crew from the placer county sheriff's office was on a training mission. they encountered 5 to 6-foot swells and wind gusts up to 85

miles an hour. and you can always track the latest storm with live doppler 7 which you can find on the abc7 news app and a push alert to get weather advisories on your phone or tablet. a recent fight at a school in the east bay, a high school. you see a teenaged girl being attacked while many of her classmates stand back and just watch. now the victim and her father are speaking out. abc7 news reporter laura anthony has the story and the video from pittsburgh. >> reporter: it's a fight, more like a beating that happened inside a pittsburgh high school classroom last month. two girls attacked another while as many as ten other students stood by, some of these physically blocking anyone trying to break it up. >> they were pulling my hair and they were hitting me. >> 13-year-old ida is the one being punched. she admits she did have an ongoing verbal dispute with her attackers in the days preceding

the fight, but she says she didn't deserve this. >> i was hoping somebody would get to me. i could hear somebody say stop, no, don't do that. >> reporter: the fight goes on for nearly a minute before a teacher pushes past the crowd to break the fight up. the father says he has seen the video but could only watch it once. >> it was terrible. there were like ten people around here and not letting the teacher to break up the fight. i feel bad. >> reporter: pittsburgh unified sent abc7 news a statement saying we cannot comment on specifics of this incident due to student privacy laws. in general, any student involved in a physical confrontation, for example, faces serious consequences. ida hasn't been back to class at pittsburgh high since the attack, she says the district did suspend the two girls that attacked her, but ida's family says that's not enough. >> i just feel like everybody

that was involved in this should not be at that school anymore because it's just not safe. a brentwood man is dead after his car drifted across the road and crashed into two cars. it happened in morning on deer valley road in antioch. the chp says the driver of the honda civic ran head on into two vehicles, those other drivers suffered only minor injuries. crews are on scene this morning taking apart a tree that fell on a house on castle rock drive. no word yet whether the weather was a factor. police say that 25-year-old ethan willoughby was arrested this morning after police say he grabbed a woman's wallet at the bank of america atm on sycamore avenue. two women saw it happened and followed the suspect and called police. responding officers took

willoughby into custody near the onramp to interstate 880. the visa applications were derailed for at least 25 noncitizens last year. it is now encouraging them to reapply. the alameda county public defender's office first caught the mistake. mel l >> reporter: the oakland state police says it wants residents to feel safe reporting crimes regardless of their citizenship status. >> and not be fearful of contacting the police to let us know what's going on in our community. >> reporter: but in 2017, the oakland police department says it improperly rejected at least 25 of 124 rejected certifications for u-visa applications. if a u-visa allows someone to remain in the united states for up to four years.

>> criminal histories, open investigations, the applicants that we considered and that was the basis for the denial. >> reporter: the oakland police departments says that was a misapplication for the u visa governing certifications, a mistake caught by the alameda county immigration unit in two cases. >> they were denying some sort of criminality, whether they were arrested for a crime, or possibly defending of a crimor convicted of a crime. and that's not their job, their job is only to certify whether someone has been helpful in the prosecution of a crime. >> reporter: the department is now reaching out to those applicants. ulysses perez diaz was initially rejected after he says he helped police as the victim of an attempted carjacking. >> translator: he felt badly because an opportunity was denied in this country that is his home.

>> worst-case scenario is that someone has been deported and shouldn't have been. smoke billowed out of a home in san jose today, before the fire department could tackle the problem. there was a fire at an abandoned home on south second street and market street. neighbors told abc7 news squatters were living there. firefighters quickly got the fire under control. one man is rebuilding his life in santa rosa's charred coffee park. it's an area surrounded by ruins. wayne freedman is live with that story. >> reporter: it's a very big deal about a little house. if you had been to coffee park, this is what you're used to at this point, just flat, nothing here, houses are all gone. except for one, this house right here, the only house, ever wonder how it got here so fast? we asked. three months and counting after the firestorm and this picture fits the mood in coffee park where many residents remain in a
