nligh lightning and thunder mixed in there, walnut-sized hail in the afternoon hours, all throughout the afternoon, small pea-sized hail. right now we're looking at very widely scattered showers but the potential for someomeomeomeomeoe weather occurrences. and the possibility of hailstones and high elevation snow. here's a little animation starting at 7:00 this evening going into 10:00 tonight. we we'll see widely scattered showers. we could see snow mixing in. and then during the overnight hours the storm dissipates and gives way to mostly sunny skies to start the day tomorrow. i'll show you what will follow that in a few minutes.

nurses held an informational meeting to protest state-wide staffing cuts. the california nurses association has been negotiating for the past eight months. the union says proposed staffing cut would hurt the quality of care in the uc system. has this season's flu reached its peak? some say the intensity of new cases has tapered off somewhat, but they caution it's too early to be optimistic, because there could be another surge. lean lyanne melendez was in concord where they are really pushing the flu vaccine. >> reporter: the mt. diablo adult health education health fair is a yearly event offering flu vaccines. >> it's been a very difficult flu season. >> reporter: so far they have seen seven people die from the influenza virus. the state number is 74.

the outcomes of the committee's actions are predetermined, due to many of the other representatives' connections to wireless and cable corporations and their allies. new details on the terrifying missile alert in hawaii which turned out to be a false alarm about two weeks ago. the person who sent the alert is not cooperating with the investigation. that information was revealed today during a senate hearing with an official with the fcc security bureau. the hawaii emergency management facility says it has encouraged employees to cooperate. but it is up to each individual. of the state address. >> reporter: in his final state of the state address, governor jerry brown wasted no time

someone will provide some bit of information that leads to the shooter. >> reporter: john says it's not surprising to see a river otter or two when they walk their dog near heather farm park. what is surprising is that anyone would want to hurt one. >> it really broke my heart to think that somebody would actually kill and just try to maim one. >> reporter: but someone did shoot and maim a male river otter like this one found wandering around the field. it was -- >> struggling to breathe, coughing, just obviously not well. >> reporter: the otter was rushed to the lindsey wildlife hospital where these x rays were taken. they show a half dozen bb-style projectiles possibly from a bb gun. fish and wildlife thinks they likely came from a shotgun. either way, the animal had to be put down. >> he had broken teeth and something going on in his mouth

at least we had a lot to talk about. things are much calmer now, but as you can see, there are little pockets of scattered showers around the bay area, and any one of these little pockets of showers at some time could produce an isolated thunderstorm or hailstones, but right now things look pretty calm from sutro tower looking out over san francisco where it is 52 degrees, oakland checked in at 52. 51 at mountain view and 46 at gilroy and half moon bay. partly cloudy skies at emeryville. napa, 49. 51 concord and 48 at livermore. and one more view from the south bay camera. the forecast features are these. we may see more scattered showers tonight, they're likely to occur. we'll see partial clearing tomorrow and a drier and milder pattern over the weekend. what's left of this storm and

it's still here ranks one on the storm impact scale. through tonight we could see scattered showers. there is the possibility of isolated hail or thunderstorms and high-elevation of snow as elevations drop to 3,000 feet. here's animation. notice going into the later evening hours we'll see scattered showers, into the south bay into the east bay. further north up around ukiah, we' we'll see snow. in the wee hours of the morning we'll see the storm fizzling and winding down. and for the morning commute, mainly dry condition, maybe an isolated shower but mostly dry, and the day will start with mostly sunny skies, and that will lead us into a mostly sunny and milder weekend. overnight, it's going to be quite chilly in the inland valleys. look for temperatures in the low 30s around napa, santa rosa. east bay, mid 30s at

the chill will be widespread. looking at tomorrow's highs, mainly mid to upper 50s, except down the south bay it will be a little milder with a high around 60 degrees at san jose. and in the sierra, it is still snowing, and this winter storm warning remains in effect until 10:00 tomorrow morning. we expect an additional six to 12 inches of snow, maybe up to 18 in the higher peaks, and the wind is gusting, 40-60 miles per hour. here's accuweather seven-day forecast. partly cloudy tomorrow. temperatures begin rising over the weekend. by sunday, we'll see high temperatures in the mid-60s around the bay shore line and the inland. up to 60 around the coast, and early next week look for highs in the upper 60s by tuesday and thursday of next wiebeek. february arrives. it will arrive under sunny conditions and mild conditions.

and overnight hours. you can see the scattered showers will taper off in the wee hours of the morning before the morning commute begins. so commuters should be greeted by mainly dry pavement and improving conditions. we're about to share with you a highly disturbing scene. a recent fight at an east bay high school. >> a teenaged girl was being attacked while many classmates stood and watched. and now the victim and her father are speaking out about what happened. >> laura anthony has the story from pittsburg. >> reporter: a fight, more like a beating that happened inside a pittsburg high school classroom last month. two girls attacked another while as many as ten other students stood by. some of them physically blocking anyone trying to break it up. >> they were pulling my hair and hitting me. >> reporter: 17-year-old sisneros is the one who was being attacked.

she admits she had a verbal dispute in the days before the fight, but she didn't deserve this. >> i was hoping somebody would get to me. i could hear somebody say stop, stop, don't do that. let me get through. >> reporter: the fight goes on for nearly a minute before a teacher pushes past the crowd to break it up. ida's father has seen the video but could only watch it once. >> i was floored by it. it's like ten people around her and not letting the teacher to break up the fight. i i feel bad. >> reporter: pittsburg unified sent us a statement. we cannot comment on specifics of this incident due to student privacy laws. in general, any student involved in a physical confrontation faces serious consequence. ida hasn't been back to class at pittsburg high since the attack. she says the district expelled the two girls who attacked her, but her family says that's not

enough. >> i just feel that everybody who was involved in it should just not be at that school anymore. because it's just not safe. >> i was a kid, too. i had fights, but it was a fight between one on one. not ten against one. >> reporter: in pittsburg, laura anthony. two earthquakes hit off northern california about 100 miles away from fern dale. the second quake, a 5.0 hit less than an hour later and there were no reports of damage. the early earthquake warning system is one step closer to deployment, but it might take another three to seven years for cell phone alerts. it leaves the u.s. behind japan, turkey and other countries which already have national alert systems. >> the other systems in the world were built after ladies and gentlemen of the jury --

transaction could take so many twists and turns involving a company in england, a stranger in boston and an orphanage in china. it all began when gary tried to pay for the flooring through paypal. however, he typed one wrong letter in the seller's e-mail. >> i put one too many gs. >> so the money did not go to the craigslist seller. >> it said i made a75 payment to clee yoe's creations. so gary clicked on it. >> little knit animals. >> the website belongs to a company in england that sells knitted scarves and animals. >> i contacted them to say hey, i made a mistake. he asked a refund, he didn't get a response, so he asked paypal for help. we investigated on found something surprising. >> wow, this is incredible.

it turns out the cleo's creations in england did not get gary's money. instead, the money went to a dormant paypal account belonging to a guy in boston. we talked to the man in boston, and he told us he opened that paypal account ten years ago for his little daughter's jewelry-making business. that business was also called cleo's creation, which is why it got mixed up with the company in england. >> oh. >> reporter: turns out the little girl was raising money for an orphan and in china where she had been adopted. >> wow, that is an incredible story. >> the man in boston did get e-mail demands from gary. he thought it was part of a scam. >> i thought it was the same about them. >> once he confirmed gary was for real, the man in boston reeved the $75. gary said the truth softened his heart. >> almost feel like i could send some money to that orphanage.

a report from the "new york times," president trump wanted to fire special counsel robert mueller back in june. the paper reports the only reason he didn't but backed away was because the top white house lawyer threatened to quit rather than carry out the order. the "times" says this is the

their this is a drone's perspective of some of the damage left behind. two people are still missing, a toddler and teenager, 28 people have died. >> what goes through my mind are the people who died across the street because they couldn't get out. the water was so forceful that during the night, i think they were sound asleep and probably drowned. >> that woman says it will cost her around $500,000 to repair the damage done to her home. she like many of her neighbors are determined to rebuild. abc 7 was in mill valley after a tree fell onto a house. the people who live here got out safely and brought in a tree company to chop up and clear away that tree. well, it is what skiers and snowboarders have all been waiting for, and that is a healthy helping of snowfall on the sierra in time for the weekend. >> jonathan bloom went to a local ski shop where they're working overtime to get ready for serious powder days.
