from making his speech at the world economic forum. you can see him on stage getting ready for that speech. earlier this morning, though, he said he planned to offer a message of "peace and prosperity." in fact, he thinks that it will be received well, saying it will be a positive message. president trump also said, "the united states is doing fantastically well, better than we've done in decades." he pointed to the stock market records on wall street as evidence, as well as businesses coming back into the united states. he'll be speaking for about 15 minutes. i'll be listening in here at the live desk. i'll have highlights for you later in this newscast. looks like things are just getting under way. a little bit behind schedule. i'll check in shortly. >> jessica, thank you. a legal fight between the motorcyclist and a self-driving car owner. >> he says the car knocked him over after it suddenly changed

[ inaudible ] >> want to take it back. so sorry. we're having problems with your audio. we'll get back with you. i want to talk about this issue. auto break-ins reached an all-time high. a new report shows how difficult it's been to bring criminals to justice. officials from the district attorney's office said of 81,000 online reports of auto break-ins over the last seven years, only 13 cases netted an arrest. sfpd proposed a plan to help

curb the problem. the contra costa and san francisco health department say new cases of flu have tapered off but it's too early to be optimistic. at the health fair in concord, flu vaccines were a popular item. so far contra costa county has seen seven people die. the state number is up to 74. health departments are still recommending a flu shot because it can protect you even if it's not perfect. >> it's not too late to get a vaccine. good hand washing frequently covering sneezes and coughs. staying home if you're sick and staying away from sick people as much as possible. >> it's free. as bad as the flu has been, i don't really want to catch it. >> because the flu virus is so unpredictable, health officials warn there could be another surge. be careful. >> it is 5:04 now. teachers are in trouble in silicon valley. they cannot afford to live where they work.

they're calling it a housing crisis. a town hall meeting hashed out possible solutions. here's reporter katie marzullom >> i stay home or move and he commutes two hours. >> i'm 36 years old and live with another teacher and boyfriend. >> teacher after teacher told their story of trying to survive. >> single mom constance kirk en dahl one of them. >> that one-bedroom apartment was in san leandro. she was commuting to menlo park. >> it wasn't affordable for me to live there any longer. i had to move back with my mom. >> more than 100 teachers attended a town hall meeting at gunn high school in palo alto. a panel of experts offered possible solutions to the problem. for example, developments of triplexes and four plexes. >> they could buy it, rent three of units to other teachers or other members of the

upper 30s to low 40s in the east bay neighborhood. might be a touch colder tomorrow morning but a little more fog. broaden out, low to mid-40s along the bay shore and to the south bay. up in the hills in los gatos at 39. same thing in santa rosa. napa, 34. about 45 right now in vallejo. here's a look at a little bit of snow blowing around lake tahoe. if you're headed to the sierra, sue told me there's chain requirements. that will be the case early today once the sun comes up. you'll start melting that snow and it will be easier to get up in the afternoon hours. going to do exercise, dress for chilly conditions. cool this afternoon. going to the beaches, there's the showers that are near the north bay beaches. those will fade away by the time the sun comes up. let's go back to the south bay. 44 this morning at 8:00. by noon, it's 54 degrees. a lot of sunshine. we'll see more sunshine here than anywhere else. temperatures hanging out around 56 at 2:00. we're dropping back to about 49

degrees with increasing high clouds as we head towards 8:00. all right. as far as the east bay, starting off with 45 at 8:00. still in the 40s at 10:00. you'll see a little bit of sunshine, window of sunshine from about noon to 4:00. then those high clouds will start to stream in. in fact, they may stream in sooner than that. then we'll drop back to 48 degrees by 8:00. if you're like me, the yard starting o grow again. doing yard work this weekend, i have beautiful weather for you to do it. kids are playing softball and baseball. stick around tore the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's sue. >> put out the outdoor furniture yesterday afternoon. it was lovely. >> nice. >> to the south bay. the headlights headed in the northbound direction. everybody is moving at the limit here. let's go across town to 280 in san jose near the 17/880 over crossing again. you have an 8:00 minute drive towards cupertino. not any delays there.

overall, a little bit of rain -- pardon me, in the green that mike has been talking about. especially over the altamont pass. you may find slick roads out there. still lingering from some rain and definitely slow speeds. looking at about a 45-minute delay to get from tracy into the dublin pleasanton area. we'll come back and take a look at your north bay commute and check on the bay bridge toll plaza in a couple of minutes. >> breaking news from the abc 7 live desk. >> we are getting breaking news out of hayward. the highway patrol responding to an accident involving one of its own on interstate 880 right near the 8th street exit. abc 7 news reporter janine de la vega just arrived on scene. she's joining us now live. >> reporter: jessica, the northbound 880 off ramp to 8th street is closed. here behind me, you can see why. lots of police activity with tow trucks and you can see a collision has occurred here between chp patrol vehicle and

another car that's about to be loaded on to this tow truck. we know this happened within the last hour. it is affecting this intersection here right as you get on to 880 and a-street. to give more info. we go to sergeant ted montez with the chp, hayward unit. what can you tell snus? >> the fortunate thing is that all the drivers, both the officers and the civilians involved in this crash, just had minor complaint of pain injuries. they were all transported immediately to a local hospital for precautionary measures. >> reporter: what time did this happen and who appears to be at fault here? >> as far as who is at fault, it's too early in the investigation to determine yet. at 4:15 this morning, our officers were involved in a pursuit of a vehicle exceeding the speed limit and with no license plates. it started northbound at

tennyson on interstate 880. the suspect vehicle subsequently exited the freeway here at a street. as he came down the off ramp on a red light, he blew the intersection. the officers were coming to the bottom of the off ramp, started slowing to clear the intersection. because of the visual, i wouldn't say deficiencies, the obstructions here involving this over-crossing here, they didn't observe another vehicle, civilian vehicle traveling eastbound. it was a rather low impact speed within the middle of the intersection here. the officers were operating in a code 3 with their lights and sirens. >> reporter: this car behind us is not the suspect vehicle? >> this car behind us is not the suspect vehicle. the suspect vehicle actually continued on back on to the freeway. it was witnessed by other law enforcement agencies at a high rate of speed, driving in a reckless manner. >> reporter: thank you so much

automation offices. the cars are here on the streets of san francisco. but they are now being called into question. a motorcyclist, oscar nielsen says a self-driving chevy bolt started to change lanes so nielsen moved up. then the car didn't make the lane change but moved back hitting and knocking over nielsen. the police report blames nielsen for passing a vehicle when it wasn't safe. nielsen's lawyer says he disagrees with that conclusion, saying his client was innocent and just driving down the road. this chevy had a backup driver. as he tried to grab the wheel and steer away, it was too late. a statement from gm says safety is their primary focus and point to the police report, blaming the motorcycle driver. cruise automation say the self-driving cars had about a half a dozen collisions. but in all of them, the company blames the other drivers, saying the chevy bolts were never to blame. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

>> i bet a lot of companies will be watching that closely. lyft is confirming, it's investigating claims that employees abuse their access to customer data and may have tried to acquire mark zuckerberg's personal information. the claims come from an anonymous user who posted the information on the app. this user saw employees look up phone numbers of not only zuckerberg but hollywood actresses and porn stars. uber got in trouble two years ago for giving employees access to its user information. the long awaited west coast early earthquake warning system is one step closer to deployment. but it may take another three to seven years for cell phone alert. the networks are currently too slow when seconds count. that leaves the u.s. behind japan, turkey and other countries which have national alert systems. >> the other systems in the world were built after large damaging and in many cases high

fatality events. those earthquakes produced the political will to invest in building an early warning capability. >> full development is also hindered by lack of funding. the required network of stations that monitor seismic activity is only half built. if you love to ski but don't love to drive to get to the skiing, this might be interesting. next friday a new bus comofferi alternative to get to tahoe. the convoy will use charter buses rented from tech companies to shuttle people to the north and south shores of lake tahoe. the buses will drive up on friday night and then come back sunday night. tahoe convoy says it will get passengers to tahoe faster than driving during highway closures because it has priority shuttle access. tickets are $49 each way. hmm. interesting alternative. wen you get to tahoe, you'll probably want to stay off the

who is ready for sun and clouds. high accuweather highlight tonight, a lot like this morning. patchy clouds and fog. cool temperatures in the 30s and 40s. no snow for days. i could have put weeks. i didn't want to scare you. could be a couple of weeks. live doppler 7 looking pretty dry except for the few showers that continue to stay over the ocean near the north bay coast. that's where they're going to stay as they fall apart. you can see a bubble of high pressure pushing the storm track to the norpt. so the farther north you go today, the more high clouds you're going to see. the farther south you are, the more sunshine you'll see. that's why some of the warmer temperatures -- santa cruz just 60 in san jose. we drop through the mid-50s to 55 degrees in santa rosa. napa. 54 in vallejo. 51 in ukiah. it will be 56 in san francisco today. dropping down to 46 tonight. warmer spots for you. low to mid-40s around the bay shore and into the south bay. there are exceptions.

this is abc 7 mornings. good morning. it is 5:0 on this friday. january 26th. thanks for being there with us. >> it's friday. i'm so excited. it's a beautiful weekend already, mike. >> i think so. a lot of the sunshine coming our way. in fact, more sunshine through the weekend and warmer temperatures in the afternoon hours. right now, it's all about the north bay. all the fog is around santa rosa and petaluma to novato. start to fill in near san rafael and napa. that will be around for the entire morning commute. watch out for the kids at the bus stop. dress warmer this morning. 53 to 57 with high clouds and sunshine. thicker high clouds and about 57 degrees at 4:00. grab a coat this evening. it will be dry.

7:0049 to 52. here's sue. fog is no fun for your commute either. we have several areas of dense fog. earlier we told but this accident on the off ramp to a-street. it's been cleared. so the off ramp is reopened. it never did really affect lanes of 880 which is good news. we do have this accident still in lanes westbound 4 at chp saying it's after he will ham bra. i'm seeing a -- alalhambra. there's fog in the area chp is saying. there are flares out to remind to you slow down. we're staying on top of breaking news in hayward. it was at 880 near the a street exit. reporter janine de la vega joining us again live with an update. >> reporter: jessica, there were actually two chp officers in the

vehicle that crashed with another car. as you can see behind me, they have opened the intersection back up here at 880 and a street. the on ramp is back open. the two officers involved and the driver and passenger in the other car are now at the hospital. now, take a look at this video that we took a short time ago. this incident all happened at 4:30 this morning. a chp officer saw a dodge pickup speeding on northbound 880 at tennyson. that truck was going around 80 miles an hour and it did not have a license plate. so the chp officers started pursuing that truck and the truck wouldn't stop. it exited at a street. when it exited a street, it blew through the intersection. the chp officer followed it. but it ended up hitting another car that it did not see in that intersection. so the suspect's truck, that truck ended up getting away. instead, the chp officers had to stop since they were involved in that crash.

the officers, as well as the people in the other vehicle involved in that collision, they complained of minor pain. so the good news is, they are okay. we did ask the officer about why they decided to pursue that car because of the dangers and the collision happened. here's what the sergeant had to say. >> the officers take all that into account, traffic conditions and weather conditions when they engage in these pursuits. they weigh all those factors to determine the risk versus gain aspect of whether they're going to continue or not. >> reporter: back out here live again. the suspect vehicle got away. officers and the other people involved in the collision are okay. traffic is open so that is good -- the traffic is no longer blocked, so that is good news for the commuters. reporting live from hayward, janine de la vega, abc 7 news: >> janine, thank you. president trump just wrapped up

a major speech at the world economic forum in switzerland. in fact, you see him here from a live picture still on stage answering a few questions this morning. he's also responding to "the new york times" report which says he tried to fire the special counsel. we want to turn to kenneth moton. he's joining us live in washington with the latest on that part of the story. >> good morning, jessica. i can tell that you reportedly special counsel robert mueller, he recently learned about his attempted firing as his team interviewed current and former white house officials. this morning president trump on the world stage at the economic forum in davos, switzerland. >> fake news, folks. >> but responding to a new report that he tried to get rid of the special counsel in the russia investigation. "the new york times" says after media reports of a possible obstruction of justice case last june, the president ordered white house counsel don mcgann

to ask the justice departent to fire robert mueller. the sources say trump backed off when he refused and threatened to quit. >> i haven't been giving it any thought. >> the president and top aides denied that he's given thought to firing mueller. >> the president has not even discussed that. the president is not discussing firing bob mueller. >> "the new york times" reports that white house counsel argued dismissing mueller would have a catastrophic affect on the trump presidency. richard blumenthal, one of the investigators looking into russia election meddling reacted on msnbc. >> these reports are absolutely stunning, deeply frightening because they show, again, that the president will stop at nothing to protect himself. >> white house attorney tie cob responded to "the new york times" report saying we decline to comment out of respect for the office of the the special counsel and its process. before heading to switzerland, trump said he's ready to sit

down for an interview. his attorney clarified saying that's also being worked out. reporting live in washington, kenneth moton, abc 7 news. thank you, kenneth. an immigration plan to be sent to congress on monday it already being rejected by democrats, immigration advocates and conservatives. this would give almost 2 million undocumented immigrants a way to become u.s. citizens. that is a lot more than the 700,000 people in the daca program. conservative republicans say that's unacceptable. the president wants $25 billion for border security, including the border wall. democrats say they won't support it. the plan would eliminate the visa lottery system and limit family my grax, which immigration advocates are blasting. new call for witnesses on this bizarre incident. a man driving a van down the street in that district. citizens pled with him to get

off the sidewalk. he's charged with aggravated assault and attempted murder. an east bay high school student says her school didn't do enough after she was attacked in a classroom. >> we have video of the beating. it looks brutal. this happened inside pittsburg high school last month. 17-year-old ida cisneros is the one being punched. this started as an ongoing verbal dispute with her attackers. >> was hoping somebody would get to me. i could hear somebody say, stop, don't do that, let me get through. >> it was horrible. there was like ten people around her and not letting the teacher to break up the fight. i feel -- i feel bad. >> she hasn't been to school since. she wants the school to do more to the other people who were involved. the two people who attacked her were expelled from school. so pittsburg unified won't comment on this particular case but tells us in general, any student involved in a physical confrontation faces serious

consequences, including but not limited to a suspension from school, possible expulsion or consequences involving law enforcement. temperatures up to 8 degrees cooler this morning and it is dry. at least it's not raining. it's still pretty damp out there. we have wetness on the streets. be careful tore that. we've got that thick fog in the north bay. temperatures thankfully right now staying above freezing. we're close in places like napa and american canyon at 34. roan ert pa rohnert park 35. no fog if clear lake, it is 32 degrees for the warm spot. tiburon at about 43. 44 at el sobrante. 40s in san francisco down to san jose. 40 in brentwood. 41 in tracy right now. san ramon, 38. here's a look at the dampness. even a few puddles on the richmond side of the richmond-san rafael bridge. watch out on the roads. use caution because of the

dampness out there. if you're taking mass transit, it's cooler this morning. dress appropriately. light breezes on the bay today. my 12-hour planner, we're stuck in the mid to upper 40s from 8:00 to 10:00. low to mid-50s through the noon hour into 4:00 and back to 48 degrees with increasing high clouds this evening. as far as san francisco goes, of course, it's a little narrower. about 45 degrees at 8:00. 49 at 10:00. then right around 50 to 51 degrees throughout the afternoon hours. if you're headed out this evening, dress for 48 degrees. looking for warmth and sunshine, i got it coming up in your seven-day forecast. i'll have that next. here's sue. >> let's take a look at walnut creek. southbound 680, the taillights past north main towards highway 24. you're looking at a real easy drive. the headlights are headed northbound on 680. in fact, all the way down the san ramon corridor to the 580 junction, it looks good. overall, traffic is moving nicely. we have a light situation.
