wash was motivated by jealousy. 28-year-old timothy smith opened fire, killing four people. family members say smith had an obsession with his former girlfriend, who was among the victims. smith is hospitalized with a gunshot wound of his own, which officials say might have been self-inflicted. schools in at least six states will be closed today because of concerns about the flu. 39 states reported high flu activity last week. that's up from 32 the previous week. workers at super bowl events in minneapolis are wiping down surfaces with alcohol wipes several times a day, hoping to keep crowds healthy. our own doctor here at abc news jennifer ashton recently brought her own daughter to the hospital with the flu. we asked her what parents should look for and how to know when it's time to go to the e.r. >> the two big things i think people should look for. inability to tolerate liquids by mouth. that was my daughter's case, for almost a day. and difficulty breathing. breathing at a rapid rate. not being able to take a full breath. or with an infant, flaring around the nostrils. parents should ask their child, do you feel the same, worse, or

but apparently did a good job. >> he stuck the landing. >> no injuries reported. a food recall this morning. panera bread is recalling all of its cream cheese products because of possible listeria contamination. the company says samples of one type of cream cheese tested positive for the bacteria. listeria can cause life-threatening infections mostly in the elderly and young children. physically fit military personnel around the world may have revealed important details about their bases. that's because so many of them use the online fitness tracker strava. the map includes u.s. bases in iraq, afghanistan, and syria. the pentagon is now investigating. strava says the users have the option to make the information private. and that type of data is never published. the government is considering a new nationalized mobile network. the news outlet axios says the 5g network would be a way of guarding against china and other malicious internet actors. could be up to eight months

at the end of a record-setting trip. 19-year-old oliver crane is the youngest person to ever row across the atlantic ocean. it took him 44 days to reach antigua from africa. congrats to him. we turn now to a controversy in florida. police in miami are facing criticism after video showed officers leading a 7-year-old boy out of school in handcuffs. >> the boy allegedly attacked a teacher. kicking, punching, and knocking her to the ground before grabbing her hair. police were called after the teacher managed to restrain the child. the boy's parent says the police were out of line. >> does he show any signs of aggression or anything like that at home? have you ever seen him misbehave so badly that he's attacking other people? >> my son doesn't behave bad. he's a normal kid. he plays like all the kids. he has a younger brother and an older brother. and is always playing with them. arguing between kids is normal.

for a toy or something like that. trying to do something against anybody, no. >> police say their action was warranted to keep the boy from harming himself and others. despite a previous outburst, the boy's parents describe him as an excellent student who has won awards at school. the actress who played the mother on "the wonder years" says the show was canceled because of sexual assault allegations against fred savage. a costume assistant said that savage assaulted her. savage was just 16 years old when the show ended in 1993. mills said the case was settled out of court. and actor scott baio is firing back against sexual misconduct allegations tweeted out by his "charles in charge" co-star nicole eggert. she says it started when she was 14 and it was not a one-time deal. scott baio is fighting back.

he shared a letter from his lawyers, to a tv talk show, which was reportedly considering whether to share eggert's story. producers cancelled the show because of doubts about her claims. >> she's making all these claims about me, nicole eggert is, that are false. when you have minors on a set of a situation comedy, when they're not on the set working, they are in the classroom with the teacher. the teacher brings them to -- >> baio says she's made claims against him for six years but has never taken her claims to the police. investigations under way as to why a soldier's brand-new jeep cherokee burst into flames on a base in washington state. he says the electronic dashboard stopped working. then the vehicle stalled. and that's when he saw a flame between the dashboard and the hood. within seconds, the vehicle was engulfed. lewis escaped unharmed. he says he bought the jeep just three weeks ago. we turn to sports. the patriots make their way to minneapolis today for a full

the crash scene. there are two lanes open and an exit lane that is open. that is how vehicles are able to move past the scene. this happened just before 1:50 this morning. the chp says four vehicles were at the scene. more may have been involved. all lanes were stopped and a sig-alert issued after 2:00 a.m. officers did cpr on the man but he died at the scene. he's described as a haywood resident in his late 30s. they're looking into who was at fault and expect the lanes to be open relatiely soon as they wrap up the on-scene investigation. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> so sorry to hear of the loss. some drivers driving across the bay bridge into san francisco this weekend may have noticed a sign. there was a photo of a banner that read "danger, sanctuary city ahead."

it reads san francisco is a dangerous city and to enter at your own risk. the group calls it a public service announcement. the highway patrol says the banner was up for only a short time. a grenade closed down part of benicia. abc 7 news was at first and g street when the bomb squad responded to clear the scene. police say a boy discovered the grenade in some water at the foot of first street. he then brought it over to his father. his dad called police who cordoned off the area. until the bomb squad removed the device. it was covered in barnicles but the pin was intact. it's 4:30 now. if you're just joining us, let's get a quick update on your weather and traffic with mike nicco. >> thanks. i want to talk about isolated areas where fog is forming. it's thick around santa rosa. about
