. the chp resorts to tricky maneuvers to force a driver to lose control and stop his car. this after a high-speed chase that began in the east bay, crossed two bridges and ended back into east bay. thanks for joining us. the driver is now in police custody after this morning's pursuit that topped 90 miles per hour. police say the man waved a crowbar during various points of this bizarre drama. it started on interstate 80 near university avenue in berkeley. the chase went across the bay bridge, down 101, through the peninsula, across the san mateo bridge and eventually ended in hayward. reggie is here with the

heart-stopping action. >> we were glued to our tvs in the news room. one of our abc 7 crews caught this, a man moving around, maybe dancing on top of his pickup truck with a crowbar on hand and it got our attention and the attention of chp, who had followed him for about 45 minutes as he waved around this crowbar like he was a drum major with a baton. this morning's pursuit began in berkeley. abc7 news was there as a man pulled his truck over to the median of interstate 80, stood on top of it and waved a crowbar wildly as the morning commute moved past him. then this turns into a chase. this abc 7 south beach camera captures the man driving into san francisco on the bay bridge. from there, sky7 follows the chase onto southbound 101. he eventually made his way across the san mateo bridge. he auto voided traffic. traffic seemed to avoid him. look at that. the driver keeping both hands off the wheel. a firm grip, though, still on

that crowbar. at one point, he hit at least 80 miles per hour as clocked by sky7's sky map technology. then much slower when he got off the highway into hayward. sky map 7 showing you how this ends when the driver gets to west whitten avenue, it's game over. >> let's take you live to katie where she's live at the scene and the dramatic chase ended. >> reporter: chp officers cleared the scene about a half hour ago. there's glass and debris in the intersection behind me where this came to an end. i'll show you sky7 footage that captures the end of this chase that ended with a pit move. west whitten avenue and almadore street. it's around the alameda county buildings. you can see the truck spins out of control after colliding with chp. then officers converge. since the pursuit went into

several chp jurisdictions around the bay area, you can see a lot of officers. they pulled the man out of his truck without incident. while he was cuffed on the sidewalk, our photographer asked the man what he had to say for himself. >> you put a lot of people in harm's way. what do you have to say about that? >> it's never good to elude atthy point or failure to yield for anything. you're putting the motoring public in danger. >> reporter: as you can see from the video, the man appears to be intoxicat intoxicated. chp confirms that's their initial impression as well. of course, they have investigating that. chp drove the truck out of the intersection. officers say it is registered to the driver, the man they arrested. officers confirm the man had an implement in the vehicle with him. whether that be a crowbar or stick, they would not say. he is now facing multiple charges for that 52-mile pursuit around the bay. live in hayward, abc7 news.

>> thank you. and the abc7 news app sent out a push alert when this unfolded. be the first to know when breaking news happens. other news now, breaking news from washington, d.c. the fbi's deputy director will leave his position before he intended to retire later this year. andrew mccabe has faced frequent criticism from president trump. mccabe had planned to leave the fbi when he became eligible to retire in march. president trump has publicly criticized mccabe for how the fbi investigated democrat hillary clinton's e-mails during the 2016 presidential election. richmond police have just announced they arrested two 18-year-olds in the case of an officer who was mowed down while trying to stop a sideshow over the weekend. it was all caught on camera. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the police department where a news conference just wrapped up. amy, how is the officer doing? >> reporter: hi. the officer is home recovering. there's a lot of relief here he

has been released from the hospital. the chief says it is just chilling for him when he finds out one of his officers has been hurt. here's a look at the two people that officers have arrested. first, 18-year-old juan vargas of patterson. jennifer of santinella.lfriend, they were at a sideshow early sunday morning. we have video of the sideshow, including the instant the officer was hit by the car. he was standing on the side, trying to break up the sideshow when it happened. police found the abandoned vehicle that hit the officer and say the couple later called it in to report it stolen. that's when police figured out who they were, they believe they did it and arrested the pair. they have filed several charges against the couple. the police chief explaining this morning. >> the leading charge is attempted murder because of the

seriousness of how this played or the. the underlying charges, obviously, if you the use your car in a crime and then you abandon it and then try to reported it stolen later, we're familiar with that tactic. doesn't usually work. making a false police report is aid crime. to conspire with one another to do that is a conspiracy charge. >> reporter: the chief showed his department's drones at the press conference as an example of how they plan to crack down on sideshows. he says they are happening more frequently in richmond. so, they are going to work harder to prevent them and to shut them down. they'll use social media, technology and they plan to follow up with drivers who they identify as being there, maybe even reporting the activity to car insurance companies to discourage the behavior. police say they want to put the public on notice that attending a sideshow is a bad idea. reporting live in richmond, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you. a man is in the hospital after antioch police say he was

assaulteded with a deadly weapon. investigators have not said how the man was assaulted but they confirm it was not a shooting. they found unconscious around 9:45 last night in the middle of terrace view avenue. that's in a neighborhood off hill crest avenue. the 34-year-old victim from pittsburg was taken to the hospital where he's now in stable condition. no word on any suspects. developing news out of redwood city. the chp is investigating a deadly crash that involved at least four vehicles on highway 101 near whipple avenue. it happened just before 2:00 this morning on the northbound side of the highway. officers say a motorcyclist died at the scene. he's described as a hayward resident in his late 30s. investigators are looking into who was at fault. classes are going on as usual right now at san jose state university despite major clean-up and repair work about to get under way. this after a water main break last night flooded and damaged some buildings. matt keller is live on campus with what's going on.

matt? >> reporter: this is aid big day here at san jose state. you've got sororities and fraternities lined up recruiting for this semester. last night instead of students, this area was flooded with water. water bubbled up and flooded san jose state campus last night. a water main broke between housing and south tenth street for hours starting in the late afternoon into evening. students wondered if class would be canceled on monday. >> you already get out of class today? >> yes, i did. i kept checking my e-mail to see if class was canceled, but it was pretty bad, though. >> reporter: class was not canceled but evidence of the flooding was left behind. the water surged through campus going past the student center, wellness center. >> our custodial cruise were here overnight cleaning the structures, drying them out. we're working on the last corner one building right now. >> reporter: this is an unusual

sight on campus. the influx of water colliding with the underground heating system creating steam. san jose state doesn't expect long-term damage but they're still assessing the situation. sa savannah andrews took video of the flooding on sunday. the ground just a little damp, no rain boots needed to get to class. at least it's try walking to class this morning. >> yeah, thank god for that. it would have been bad. i probably wouldn't have gotten up and went to class if it was still wet. >> reporter: san jose water company says they're investigating to see what caused this water main to break. they say they're responsible and will pay for any damage done by the flooding. reporting live, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you. a hayward neighborhood has a mess on their hands right now after a water main break opened up a sinkhole. water and mud gushed down highland boulevard yesterday. officials say a 12-inch water main broke there. the broken pipe has been removed and replaced and the utilities

were turned back on last night. but the street, as you can see, needs some work. crews hope to have the street reopened some time today. a brand-ew poll shows there's a clear front-runner in the race to replace the late ed lee. as san francisco mayor. according to "the chronicle," breed leads the pack with 48%, mark leno comes in second at 16%, and supervisor jane kim is close behind at 15%. other candidates are in single digits. this poll was commissioned by the chamber of commerce and conducted between january 13th and 16th, before breed was replaced at interim mayor with supervisor mark farrell. the election will be held in june. less than a week after a former usa gymnastics doctor was sentenced for abusing young girls and women, congress wants to make sure this never happens again. the bill they're working to pass today. a 7-year-old boy arrested at school. some people are questioning whether police went too far.

the house of representatives is taking up a bill today aimed at protecting young athletes from sexual abuse.

it would create an organization within the u.s. olympic committee that would handle reports of abuse and require officials to contact law enforcement for certain types of incidents. the discussion comes less than a week after a michigan judge sentenced former usa gymnastics doctor larry nassar up to 175 years for abusing dozens of women and girls. home schooling advocates say they're bracing for calls of stricter oversight following reports that 13 malnourished siblings allegedly held captive by their own parents in riverside county were being home schooled. add voe scats say they're horrified and some say mandatory medical visits or academic assessments to make sure home school children are seen by someone outside the home. california requires home schools be registered but doesn't regulate them. in florida, a viral video of a 7-year-old boy taken out of school in handcuffs is raising eyebrows and some question if the police went too far. police say the boy was violent and attacked a teacher.

his parents believe authorities were out of line. elizabeth hur with the latest. >> reporter: 7-year-old boy taken out of school are crying foul. >> do you think it was over the top? >> too much. >> reporter: the boy's mother recording the video is heard reassuring her son, everything is going to be okay. police say it happened on thursday at the coral way k through 8 center where the 7-year-old allegedly attacked one of his teachers after being told not to play with his food. his parents were called and in a meeting with the principal when the boy's father took him into custody. >> i asked him why, many times, why you have to take my kids away? >> reporter: according to the police report, boit attacked the teacher by repeatedly punching her on her back in the hallway and continued to fight the teacher, grabbing her hair and pulling it towards him.

later in a statement, police say this action was warranted to prevent his erratic and violent behavior from bringing further harm to others or himself. >> i told to my wife and i will do whatever is necessary, you know, to continue education possibly at home because i don't believe in the system anymore. >> reporter: the student was taken to the hospital for an evaluation and released. his father says there was a similar incident involving his son last year. this time around the boy's been suspended for ten days. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. today is the first day you can file your tax return and there's a warning from the irs. there is a high risk someone could steal your refund this year because of that massive equifax data breach. hackers obtained information from 145 million people last year. tax expert adam leavine says credit freezes wouldn't top tax-related identity theft. >> if they have a name, date of

soccer five years ago and he spent at least four years trying to bring mls back to miami. >> i was drawn to this city for the same reason millions of people are. diversity, the culture, the weather, the beaches, the people. >> mls hopes miami will be more successful this time around. the league had a miami time from 1998 until 2001 but it folded because of poor attendance. >> i know they love their soccer down there. i was there in march during the ncaa tournament. couldn't find a game, it was all soccer at the sports bars. let's switch gears and stalk about this morning. i put this time lapse together to show you how different today is than yesterday. you can see the canopy of cloud cover blocking out the sunshine that brought us such a mild day yesterday. oakland tied or set record highs. that's not going to happen today, even though it's going to be mild outside. let's take a look at the temperatures right now.

you can see that offshore breeze, 63 right now at half moon bay. up in the hills, 69. the warmth is out there. it's just not going to translate down to where we live where it's in mainly the mid to upper 50s. see that flag over there, that one, that's blowing offshore. it's about 26 miles per hour right now, so visiting the golden gate, put it off for a couple days. it will be much brighter and calmer as we head deeper into the aforecast. tonight, patchy veil of fog and the storms will stay away for possibly a couple weeks and that's why we'll make a run at record high temperatures. we always do this. there's always that two-week period in the middle of winter when we have warm temperatures and near record highs. we started that yesterday. this cold front's responsible for the clouds and this cold front is getting moved to our north. it's not going to bring us any rain. i think we'll be in the low to
