capitol hill. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning. well, the economy was the president's number one priority. he also talked about infrastructure and threats to national security. one thing he stood clear of, however, the russia investigation. >> the president of the united states. >> reporter: walking into a joint session of congress, president trump seeking to unify a divided country. >> we all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny and the same great american flag. >> reporter: in his first state of the union, clocking in at nearly an hour and a half, the president focused on the economy, his signature legislative victory, tax reform. >> this, in fact, is our new american moment. >> reporter: his plans for fixing america's infrastructure. >> america is a nation of builders. >> reporter: and an offer of bipartisanship. >> i am extending an open hand to work with members of both

parties. >> reporter: something he will need to pass his 2018 priorities like immigration reform. most democrats in the chamber not open to the president's message at times remaining stoic. >> i don't think there's anything he could have said the democrats would have stood up for. >> reporter: several democrats boycotted the speech. democratic women in black, solidarity with the me too movement. >> so i don't think the democrats came away thinking that he really put out any kind of olive branch to them. >> reporter: the democratic response coming from massachusetts congressman joe kennedy, grandson of bobby kennedy. >> this administration isn't just targeting the laws that protect us, they're targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection. >> reporter: pushing back on the president's picture of unity. a few things missing from his speech, his usual targets of his ire, the russia investigation and the news media. he also didn't take any direct swipes at democrats, and the president also did not talk about that campaign promise that

mexico is going to be paying for that border wall. kendis, diane. >> but it was quite a lengthy speech there at an hour and 20 minutes. serena there at the capitol, thank you. and the president did manage to stick to the script last night, but clearly many were wondering if he stuck to the facts. so many people turned to a nonpartisan fact-checking website for answers that it crashed just six minutes into the speech. abc's maryalice parks tell us how the president fared. >> reporter: president trump has been known to play footsie with falsehoods and be lax with the facts from time to time, but during his first state of the union address, president trump mostly stuck to his strident, prudent talking points. the one big exception, immigration where the president painted a grim picture, exaggerated what we know to be true and made some dubious claims. >> under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives.

>> reporter: in fact, today's citizens and green card holders can only petition for immediate family members, not an unlimited number. and there was this -- >> in recent weeks two terrorist attacks in new york were made possible by the visa lottery and chain migration. in the age of terrorism, these programs present risks we can just no longer afford. >> reporter: that was mostly spin. the two men involved in those attacks did come to the country legally through those programs but seem to have been radicalized here in the u.s. years after they arrived. the president said the republican tax cut was the largest in american history. that's false. he also said the u.s. was now an energy exporter, though the country has been for a long time. he did correctly take credit for having confirmed the largest number of circuit court judges.

kendis, diane. >> all right, our thanks to maryalice parks for the fact-check. three of the moments from the state of the union that got our attention, the first lady, melania trump, broke with a long tradition by riding in a separate motorcade to the capitol. first ladies usually arrive with the president. arizona congressman paul gosar said he contacted capitol police asking them to arrest anyone at the speech without legal citizenship, an apparent reference to immigrants invited by democrats. and the congressional black caucus wore african-style clothing to protest the president's reported comments referring to african countries as expletive holes. the white house says it has no plans to release a secret memo on the russia investigation and has ordered a full review before making a decision, but the president was overheard last night telling a republican congressman that apparently he is 100% in favor of making the document public. the memo written by republicans reportedly accuses the fbi and justice department of improper use of surveillance.

democrats say it's an attempt to discredit the russia probe. meanwhile, special counsel robert mueller is negotiating to interview the former spokesman for president trump's legal team. mark corallo resigned last july. sources say he stepped down because of concern that some in the president's camp were looking for negative information about mueller in an effort to find political conflicts of interest. mueller's investigators would likely want to ask corallo about a possible obstruction of justice. we've now learned that false missile warning in hawaii this month that set off panic across the state was even more serious than we thought. investigators say the worker who sent the alert actually thought the drill was real. in fact, he had a history of believing that practice alerts were real. it happened twice before. that worker has now been fired and the state's top emergency management official has resigned. and we turn now to wall street where concerns about higher interest rates have been driving stocks lower this week. the federal reserve's announcement is due today. meanwhile, apple is facing some new scrutiny. the justice department and the s.e.c. are reportedly

investigating whether the company broke any laws when it slowed down older iphones. apple says it only slowed down the phones to prevent battery issues. and insurance stocks are down after amazon announced a health care partnership with berkshire hathaway and jpmorgan chase. the companies haven't revealed any details, but they say the goal is to provide health care for their workers that's free from profit-making incentives. time now for a look at your weather on this wednesday morning. warm, dry, windy conditions have fire crews on alert in oklahoma. a raging grass fire north of oklahoma city burned at least one home along with several cars and forced evacuations in the area. a burn ban was issued for more than half of the state. and looking at today's highs, the northwest won't get out of the 50s. the southwest is going to stay warm. temperatures are above normal in the midwest and northern plains. 44 in chicago today, and it'll be more seasonable today in the

we're we're back with images of a man hanging out of a hotel window in minneapolis during a nearly two-day standoff with police. when he went back inside, police cleared the way for a gas canister to be fired into the room. a s.w.a.t. team eventually crashed through the door and arrested the suspect after an ordeal that actually lasted some 38 hours. now, just before his arrest,

rashad bowman threw that microwave that you see there through the window. police say he expressed anger about someone stealing his exotic cat. but details on the dispute are still unclear. bowman will be charged in minnesota. he's also facing charges in arizona in what's being described as a white collar crime. three people have been killed after a helicopter crashed into a home in southern california. crews in newport beach tried to pry open the wreckage as they searched for the victims. four people were on board that helicopter. two were killed along with another person on the ground. a person of interest in october's las vegas massacre has been identified by mistake. douglas haig was revealed when a judge's staff failed to properly redact his name from documents. haig says that he sold ammunition to the vegas shooter the first and only time they met. o.j. simpson has scored another legal victory. a judge in los angeles has denied a request by fred goldman to force simpson to hand over cash he makes from signing autographs.

was pretty and there just to be used and discarded when they were done. i was the curtain but i absorbed all information from both sides, from both how to sell to the audience and both how to be sold. >> but weinstein's attorney, ben brafman, says weinstein has obtained a statement from jill messick, who was mcgowan's manager at the time, and in that statement he says messick described the hot tub encounter as consensual. the adult film star stormy daniels is apparently denying that she had an affair with president trump, but there are some new questions being raised this morning. in a statement released by her publicist tuesday and authenticated by the associated press, daniels says the affair never happened. but on the "jimmy kimmel live" show, jimmy kimmel last night she appeared to call that denial into question saying she didn't know where the statement even came from, and she did not elaborate. "the wall street journal" has reported president trump's lawyer paid daniels $130,000 to stay quiet about the affair which the president's lawyer also has denied. a staggering new figure this

morning may highlight the extent of the country's opioid crisis. a congressional investigation finds drug companies shipped nearly 21 million pain pills over the last decade to a single town in west virginia that has a population of just 2,900 people. >> wow. >> that equates to about 7,000 pills per each citizen. meanwhile, the fda is now trying to crack down on the abuse of anti-diarrhea drugs like imodium which contain a small amount of an opioid. regulators are asking companies to sell those medications in smaller amounts. a new study takes a closer look at which milk is best to drink if you prefer the nondairy variety. researchers at mcgill university looked at almond, soy, rice and coconut milk and found soy was the healthiest choice overall when it comes to nutritional value, that is. they say soy contains essential nutrients not found in the other three. and forget about milk. these thieves clearly favor orange juice. five people were arrested in southern spain after stealing

been issued. they are just watching over the area. here is what it looked like, though, last night when the fire was really going. we're at sims metal management in richmond on 4th street where a 20-foot high pile of metal caught fire. air quality was a big concern. haz-mat teams and air quality officials were monitoring the air. they did issue a shelter in place for the residents here. here's what it meant for the people here. >> they're not coming outside at all. they shut off air conditioning and their windows, close their doors and keep their kids inside. >> reporter: but, again, that has been lifted. this firefight was tough. they even brought in crews from nearby refineries to help them. take a live look at what is left behind. there are huge piles of foam out here now. that's what they used to put this fire out. a big mess here. but, again, the fire is
