good friday morning good friday morning, everyone. >> here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." larry nassar expected in court as his third and final sentencing hearing this morning. more than 250 women have come forward alleging sexual abuse. more details ahead. president trump is expected to ignore the advice of his hand-picked officials and approve the release of a classified memo that reportedly shows bias in the fbi. the document, which stems from the russia probe, could be made public as early as today. at least 18 people have been hospitalized in shanghai, china, after a van carrying gas tanks caught on fire and plowed into pedestrians in front of a starbucks. the driver was smoking and

one of those women went to police with her story back in 2004, but authorities apparently did not believe her. now she has gotten an apology. here's lindsay davis. >> reporter: brianne was unwavering as she faced larry nassar in court. >> his abuse went on for too long because nobody was listening to us. >> reporter: she went to police back in 2004 when the former msu doctor abused her under the guise of medical treatment. >> the police questioned you and you had the audacity to tell them that i had misunderstood this treatment because i was not comf comfortable with my body. how dare you. >> reporter: after 14 years, officials from meridian township, michigan, they offered her an apology. >> on behalf our community, oour police department, to you,

brianne, we failed you. we let you down. >> reporter: at the time nassar told police he used a medical technique and even a powerpoint presentation, but police never consulted an outside medical expert or told msu and closed the case. >> we are sorry that we were manipulated and deceived. >> reporter: brianne listened in by video conference. saying she first got a private apology weeks ago. >> i immediately broke down after they apologized. this is a phone call i had been waiting almost 14 years for. >> reporter: she now plans to focus on making systematic changess to help victim. the document written by republicans is expected to be made public today, despite warnings from the fbi, the

justice department and even some fellow republicans. sources say the president believes a memo will back up his claim that the campaign that he had did not collude with russians. but they say it's inaccurate. and could harm national security. and the president's apparent obsession with size has led to another false claim. he tweeted that his state of the union speech watched by 45.6 million was the highest in history. but the reality the last three presidents got better ratings. tuesday's was one of the lowest for a president's first state of the union in the past 25 years. special counsel robert mueller is reaching further into the president's innercircle. one of president trump's closest aides hope hicks is denying allegations she may have concealed donald trump jr.'s e-mails. pierre thomas has the details. >> reporter: she's the white house communications director

often seen at the president's side. hope hicks is under increasing scrutiny. did she try to mislead the public about that infamous trump tower meeting? at issue, that first controversial statement released by don jr. saying it was primarily to discuss, quote, the adoption of russian children. but days laterer, e-mails to don jr. revealed something far different. don jr. agreed to meet the russians after he was promised dirt on hillary clinton. the e-mails said that dirt was high-level, sensitive information from, quote, russia and its government support for mr. trump. he tried to downplay the meeting. >> my son is a wonderful young man. he took a meeting with russian lawyer. not a government lawyer. but a russian lawyer. >> reporter: that first misleading information was on this air force one flight where they hoped to craft it while returning from overseas.

some asking why did the president step in at all? >> the president weighed in as any father would based on the limited information he had. >> reporter: the spokesman for president trump's legal time at the time was concerned about the statement's miseleading nature. less than two weeks later he resigned. a source close to corolla promising dirt on hillary clinton, only, quote, a few people have them. they will never get out. he responded, this is washington, everything gets out. the special counsel has now contacted corallo as robert mueller investigates obstruction of justice. s say the idea she suggested that e-mails be concealed is completely false.

an identical twin has been cleared in the death of her sister in hawaii. alexandria duval was accused of murdering her sister by deliberately driving off a 200-foot cliff. witnesses say they saw the sisters fighting in the vehicle before the crash. duval's defense attorney called the incident a tragic accident. the judge who decided the case seemed to agree with that argument. in the meantime, outside of l.a., this alleged police beating in san bernardino is now under investigation. that deputy shown punching and kicking a suspect during a an arrest has been placed on paid leave. that 21-year-old suspect was booked and released on suspicion of obstructing an officer. asking for witnesses to step forward. authorities in the drought stricken area of cape town are tightening water use restrictions. they may have to turn off most of the city's taps by april if the 4 million residents can't

this morning on "abc news now" gunfire in a classroom. >> a 12-year-old took a gun to school. the campus on lockdown and concerned parents rushing there to the scene. this morning, the new information, was it an accident? breaking right now, a burning car plows into a crowd outside a starbucks. nearly 20 people are injured. we have new information about the driver. a judge rules in the case of the yoga instructor accused of driving off a cliff in hawaii to kill her twin sister. the animals making their opinions known. groundhogs are forecasting the season, zoo animals are picking the super bowl winner and our pet correspondent, frank, has his own prediction.

it's friday, february 2nd. >> announcer: from abc news this is "world news now." >> groundhog day. >> it is. >> or we rename it to -- >> happy frank's day. >> so frank is predicting the weather. whether or not we're going to have six more weeks of winter? >> you will see what frank is predicting. i don't want to give it away. but we are going to begin with serious developments on the west coast at the shooting at a los angeles middle school. a 12-year-old girl charged with negligent discharge of a firearm. >> l.a. police say that shooting was accidental, not intentional. two 15-year-olds were among the injured. a boy was hit in the head and a girl suffered a wound to the wrist. abc's david curly has more from l.a. >> reporter: it was the beginning of the school day. >> it's castro middle school. >> reporter: when the shots rang out in the mixed age classroom. police were taking no chances.

they were patting down several students, taking only the girl into custody. three others suffered minor injuries in the chaos after the shooting as parents anxiously awaited news about their students. >> you're watching the news but you don't think it is going to happen in the school that your family goes to. so it's just sad. >> reporter: the middle school remained in session on lock down until parents arrived to take their children home after this traumatic day. parents and school leaders asking why. >> the reality is as a community we have to examine what would make a child want to come to school with a gun. the boy who was injured was grazed in the temple and the girl was hit in the wrist and both expected to make a full recovery. david curly, abc news, los angeles. and turning to washington where president trump has reportedly cleared the way for release of a memo. >> sources say the president has reviewed the four-page document. and expected to tell congress

that he has no objections to making it public. that memo written by republicans is said to allege surveillance abuses by the fbi and justice department in the russia investigation. justice officials and democrats say releasing it could harm national security and mislead the public. and the president is rallying his fellow republicans delivering two speeches in the course of one day. he addressed law makers in west virginia where he echoed portions of his state of the union address, touting his tax cuts and infrastructure plans. and last night the president spoke at a republican national committee event at his washington hotel. just days after calling for unity and bipartisanship, he slammed the democrats accusing them of not wanting to solve immigration as a problem. >> we're going to set another kind of record and that's making our great country so great again. so much better than it ever was. our military, our immigration situation.

i think it has a chance. you know the democrats are awol. they're missing in action. >> the president went on to say that democrats just want to obstruct and resist. >> he went on to say they just want to obstruct and a deadline is looming to pass a funding bill just six days away. and hope hicks helped president trump craft a misleading statement about donald trump jr.'s 2016 meeting with the russian lawyer. the statement insisted the meeting was about russian adoptions and e-mails later showed that trump jr. was promised dirt on hillary clinton. at the time hicks said the e-mails about the meeting would never get out. a spokesman told her quote this is washington. everything gets out. that spokesman quit less than two weeks later and expected to meet with special counsel robert mueller. the oldest son of former cuban leader, fidel castro, has taken his own life. cuban state media report the 68-year-old committed suicide

after months of treatment for depression. he served as a scientific advisor to the cuban government. and breaking overnight a burning van crashed into a crowd outside a starbucks in shanghai, china. at least 18 were injured. at first some feared this was a result of a terror attack. but the authorities say a driver who was transporting gas canisters was smoking and accidentally ignited his car. the identical twin accused of murdering her sister by driving off a cliff in hawaii has been found not guilty. duval's case was decided by a judge, not a jury. they claimed she deliberately drove off maui cliff after witnesses saw the sisters fighting. the defense attorney called it a tragic accident. after the verdict, prosecutors claim duval's actions were at least reckless behavior. and a judge has sentenced another teen in the so called

slender man case. given the maximum sentence 40 years inside a mental institution. geyser and her friend were both 2 engineers old when they lured their 1-year-old classmate into the woods and stabbed her 16 times to appease the character slender man. we'll hear from both of their families tonight on "20/20" here on abc. so barring some massive forecasting flip-flops, sunday's super bowl game is set to go down in history as the coldest ever by far. >> game time temperature is predicted to be about 3 degrees. add the wind chill to that and you're looking at least 15 below zero. >> so tailgating might be a little rough. >> little bit. the good news for anyone with a ticket, the stadium does have a dome. but party goers and pub crawlers will need to bundle up. good morning, justin.
