we won the super bowl. yes, we did. yes, we did. one of these teams on sunday will have a chance -- >> how often do you wear that thing? >> only when asked to. i really don't wear it very often but when i do it brings back great memories. >> i bet you it does. congratulations. >> thank you. we begin with the bitter showdown over the secret republican memo and a brand-new attack from president trump against the top leadership of the fbi and his own justice department, after they warn against the release of that memo. want to go right to our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. this is an extraordinary attack from the president. >> reporter: yes, good morning, george. the president is on the attack just tweeting, the top leadership and investigators of the fbi and the justice department have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of democrats and against republicans. something which would have been unthinkable just a short time ago. rank and file are great people. this morning, with the white house poised to authorize the release of that controversial gop memo against the wishes of the fbi, president trump is ignoring questions. >> mr. president, what about the

fbi director's grave concerns? don't you trust him? >> reporter: in a speech at the rnc overnight the president sounding upbeat. >> did anybody not see the state of the union? because even the haters back there gave us good reviews on that one. >> reporter: not mentioning that memo which sources tell abc news suggests the fbi showed political bias against the president. the president suggesting after the state of the union that he wants that memo made public. >> lets release the memo. >> oh, yeah, don't worry, 100%. >> reporter: but his hand-picked fbi director christopher wray flatly disagrees. the fbi officials issuing a statement about their grave concerns about material omissions and the memo's accuracy, wray backed by the more than 13,000 member fbi agents association thanking him for standing shoulder to shoulder with the men and women of the fbi. house speaker paul ryan says the memo is not an indictment of the fbi or the mueller investigation. >> if mistakes were made and if

individuals did something wrong, then it is our job as the legislative branch of government to conduct oversight over the executive branch if abuses were made. >> reporter: but democrats on the house intelligence committee say the memo is pure politics. >> it seems to be based in an effort to undermine bob mueller to protect the president. i have not seen a shred of evidence that would suggest that there's been an abuse in the russia investigation. >> reporter: the report was written by republicans on that committee. chaired by congressman devin nunes, an ally of president trump who served on his transition team. sources tell abc news it accuses the justice department of acting inappropriately when it sought a surveillance warrant in october of 2016 for a former trump campaign adviser suspected of being a russian agent. critics say the document is cherry-picked. and a top republican on the senate intelligence committee is now openly supporting the the fbi director, who is in defiance of the president. >> i would tell you there is no fbi director that hasn't faced undue political pressure and i think he's handling the pressure

well. >> reporter: former fbi director james comey last night weighing in with a tweet, quote, all should appreciate the fbi speaking up. i wish more of our leaders would but take heart, american history shows that in the long run, weasels and liars never hold the field. so as long as good people stand up. george, weasels? liars? this is clearly now completely personal between comey and the president. >> between comey and the president. but that's not all, pierre. you've been covering the justice department for 30 years. the president in that tweet said it's unthinkable what he's accusing the leadership of the fbi and the justice department of doing. but what's really unthinkable here is this kind of open warfare, open attack from the president. >> reporter: this is extraordinary and you have the fbi director laying out his independence in open defiance of the president. they're all waiting to see if this memo is going to be released. comey and the leadership have been, you know, weighing in from the outside. now we expect wray to respond to the president after this memo

comes out, george. and, again, they're waiting on the memo to be released and to see how the fbi rank and file respond to it. >> okay, pierre, thanks very much. more on this from our chief white house correspondent jon karl. jon, i don't think this tweet was part of the white house plan this morning, even though we were expecting this memo was going to come out. there had been an extraordinary behind-the-scenes lobbying effort from the fbi department directed at the white house chief of staff john kelly and they were trying to lower tensions even as they knew the memo was coming out. >> reporter: but they know how upset the president is. they talk as if there is open warfare between the president and the upper reaches of the fbi and the justice department. think about this, george, you're talking about the fbi director, the deputy attorney general, and several other top officials that the fbi over the last 48 hours have come in here and pleaded with the white house to block the release of this memo. even the director of national intelligence who is all of these people appointed by the

president, we know the president believes in a deep state conspiracy against him. now it appears he believes that deep state conspiracy includes people that he himself put in place. >> and the the second feet the president put out this morning, he seems to be pushing the line that the democrats are all behind this surveillance of the trump campaign. that the hillary campaign funded this dossier. that convinced the obama administration to do some surveillance of the trump campaign officials. yet, this was something approved by the president's own deputy attorney general. >> reporter: which is -- that's rod rosenstein and that is what's going to put him under so much pressure here. the original order comes before roiz rosenstein. but he reapproves it, pushes it again after the president is elected so he's approving surveillance of a top trump campaign former associate while the president is in the white house. that's why he is under so much fire. >> jon, one final question, other white house aides who have

seen this memo think it might not be as powerful as the president thinks. >> reporter: there's definitely a concern that this could turn into -- turn out to be quite a dud. and remember, george, as this memo was reported, the one thing we already know about this memo and repeated every time it is mentioned is that the fbi believes it is misleading. that it paints an incorrect picture of what has happened. >> which is why they have grave concerns about it. jon karl, thanks very much. michael? >> george, you know, we keep talking about unchartered territory and these tweets this morning -- >> it stunned me. we were planning a different show this morning until this came in around 6:40 because as i said to jon, everybody behind the scenes at the white house they knew this was coming. but they were trying to lower the tensions. and the president just racheted it right up this morning. >> all right. >> all right, thank you, george. now to that blast of winter weather that's moving through the midwest and the northeast just in time for the big game to bring snow overnight and, ginger, you've been tracking this system. >> you know we're watching it, michael. of course from norfolk, virginia, the rain this morning up through parts of connecticut and rhode island. you're seeing some snow

transition into massachusetts too. this is what it looks like on the roads in suffolk county, new york. new york just to give you perspective, this is new york city i'm talking about is 6 inches above average and we've been having little hits that helps add it up. what you'll notice are the temperatures. starting the morning just about freezing or subfreezing it feels colder than that. but by this evening, when you get done with dinner, it's 8:00 p.m. it's going to feel like 1 below in new york city. 4 in washington, d.c. that bitter cold settles in obviously not just for the east coast. look at philadelphia feeling like 1 tonight. detroit, 2. chicago, you don't get out of it and minneapolis, there for the game already. that's nothing compared to what's going to happen and i will talk about that forecast coming up, michael. >> thank you. all my friends in minneapolis are sending me screen shots of like the weather, minus this. i'm like, you win. >> t.j. was doing the same thing for us. >> it's freezing. >> we'll check in with t.j. later. we turn to the latest on that school shooting in los angeles that left four students

wounded and a 12-year-old girl under arrest. abc's clayton sandell is there at the school and, clayton, police are now saying they believe it was an accident. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that's right. this morning, that girl is being held in juvenile hall as investigators try and figure out where and how she got a gun and why she brought it here. this morning, questions about why a preteen girl allegedly brought a loaded handgun to her l.a. middle school. >> gunshots were heard on location. it's castro middle school. >> reporter: shooting two classmates. an adult and two other kids injured by flying glass and metal. >> as a parent, this is everyone's worst nightmare. >> reporter: the call thursday morning triggering a massive response, officers searching students one by one. >> he just said they were on lockdown and he was in tears. >> i prepare for things like this, but not with my own kid. >> reporter: one struck a 15-year-old boy in the head. he is expected to survive. >> gunshot wounds to the head are very lethal. the vast majority do not do well. in this particular circumstance

this child was extremely lucky. the trajectory of the bullet did not hit any vital structures that were an immediate threat to life. >> reporter: overnight police arresting the girl for discharging a gun at school but say it appears the shooting was accidental. students who saw it say the same thing. >> was it an accident or was it -- >> it was an accident. because they thought it was a toy gun. >> okay. >> but then it shot. >> reporter: now, police haven't said how that girl was able to get a gun inside the school. officials say the campus is safe. classes will be bag back in session this morning. robin? >> all right, clayton, thank you very much. the latest on the deadly flu epidemic and cdc expected to release new numbers on how it is spreading and effectiveness of the vaccine. abc's linzie janis has the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. such a brutal season. last week they say high flu activity was reported in 39 states. so far 37 children have died from the flu nationwide and that

number is expected to rise when we get those weekly figures from the cdc this afternoon. we also expect to learn more about the effectiveness of this year's flu vaccine today. the cdc just announced it is about 30% effective against this year's dominant strain. but canadian officials say that filg your may be as low as 10% to 20% in that country. that would be in line with australia where early estimates suggested it was only 10% effective. guys, we've heard it before. if you haven't had your flu shot, cdc says still get it, even if it's 10% to 20% effective it will still lessen the severity of your symptoms. a lot of people on edge right now. you have thousands of fans are heading to minnesota for the super bowl. a lot of us will be getting together. you get people in close quarters. that's how it spreads. >> cannot give that warning enough. >> thank you. breaking news. a heart-rending moment in the trial of michigan state university sports doctor larry nassar. lauren margraves had just

final practices in and those game plans, they got to already set, right? >> ready to go. >> so was justin timberlake previewing his halftime show. t.j. holmes is there in chilly minneapolis. all the details. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: good morning to you, guys. how you doing? we got a lot going on here. a lot of people are buzzing in town about a lot of stuff but i don't know if buzzing is the right word. freezing is the right one. guys, it is 8 below as i go on air with you here this morning. but for some reason you walk around and look at patriots fans and they look all warm and fuzzy. why? because their guy, rob gronkowski, did finally get the okay, he has been cleared out of the concussion protocol. he's been cleared to play but you ask coach belichick about gronkowski playing and listen to this answer he gave, guys. >> well, i don't think we released the injury report so whatever it is, it is. >> why is he always messing with us, guys? whatever the report is, i guess he's going to play. he's always playing mind games with everybody, the opponent and sometimes the media i guess. but gronkowski has been cleared to play.

>> that was vintage belichick. >> he doesn't give you much ever. >> what's the atmosphere like there in minneapolis for the game? >> this is the best -- i can't put it in words. the best way to put the atmosphere is this. this is what it's like here. guys, it is -- it's debilitating. folks here in minnesota are some of the sweetest folks you will ever meet. i do not know how they do this day in and day out. but the excitement is building. and everywhere i go, i'm talking to a lot of eagles fans. and they want their first one. they want that win to finally go over the hump but you got patriots fans who represent, we know they represent well so it's a fun -- kind of a fun place and getting an introduction to minneapolis if you haven't been here before. >> what is it like for the players on the friday before? >> it's calming because you're away from your -- like when you finally sequester yourself away from your family, who is all in town. and they all want to get in on the excitement of the super bowl. and you're like, i just want to relax. today starts the the day when you get away from everybody. you can -- >> no heavy-duty practice. >> you still have to practice but after practice it's like

a car went up in flames after a mother in indiana turned it on to heat it up. she was about to put her baby in the car when she saw the fire. she says she believes heat seaters -- heat warmers may be to blame. and gm is looking into it to determine what the exact cause was. we'll begin with these developments in the slender man case. one of the two girls who stabbed a classmate to please a fictional story character was sentenced for the crime. and abc's linsey davis here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. a tearful apology in court thursday from morgan geyser and i'm sorry to her former friend for stabbing her 19 times. the wisconsin judge still gave her the maximum sentence, a teenage girl who likely won't experience freedom until her 50s because of a crime she committed when she was 12. >> i just want to let bella and her family know that i'm sorry. >> reporter: sentenced to a maximum 40 years in a psychiatric hospital, morgan

geyser expressed remorse in court for the stabbing attack of her friend and 12-year-old classmate payton bella leutner. >> she appears to be stabbed. >> what? >> stabbed. >> reporter: the 2014 case known as the slenderman stabbing captivated the country. geyser and her friend stabbed her 19 times claiming it was to please that fictional character. leutner miraculously survived. both girls were sentenced to decades of institutional supervision for the violent attack. in an exclusive interview abc's david muir sat down with the mothers of those teenage girls. >> the interrogation in general is very difficult to watch. >> is she dead? >> i don't know. she was taken to the hospital. >> that's not my daughter saying those things. that's not the way that she speaks. that's not the way that she acts. >> it was like looking at a different child. >> yes. >> reporter: the parents tell david there were no warning signs of violence.

>> i did search her ipad. i did watch over her shoulder. >> do you feel responsible? >> i think on some level i'll always feel responsible for not knowing that my daughter wasn't well. as a mother you're supposed to be there to protect your child. >> reporter: the judge explained the sentence by saying that geyser who is 15 remains a risk to herself and others and says what we cannot forget is that this was an attempted murder. and david has these really compelling conversations with the mothers about that day and the girls now. >> all coming up on "20/20" at 10:00 eastern. more on that bitter cold moving into the midwest bringing temperatures below zero. it could be the coldest super bowl ever. i know they're playing inside, everybody. but abc's eva pilgrim, she is in minneapolis braving that cold weather for us. good morning, eva. >> reporter: michael, but you still have to go outside. it's dangerously cold here.

more water and how it can affect everything from your skin to your heart. >> yep. exactly. a little chemistry in med school on water. h2o. our bodies are 60% water. it's necessary for every cellular and organ function we have. if you don't get enough it can cause headaches, dry skin, a little fatigue. hunger can masquerade as thirst so you could be really be thirsty. so, again, this is our challenge for the month. >> okay, so how much do was need, jen? >> well, it depends on your age, your weight, and where you live. you can get dehydrated in the winter just as you can in the summer which is a myth. if you look at the institute of medicine recommendations for the average woman saying about 2.7 liters a day, for men, 3.7 liters a day and about 25% can come from water-rich foods, like we have here. so, again, that's the number you should shoot for. quick math equivalent, a liter is about 33 ounces. so just look at a bottle and use that bottle and keep refilling. >> how about this. because this is my producer,

what did you find out? >> it will hit close to home because you have two 13-year-old daughters. we have been talking to young women all week. and we started with our "raising good men" series. and traveled across the country to have candid conversations including this one about gender stereotypes. what does it mean when you think the word girl? >> girl is someone who is young, somewhat innocent still. she still hasn't experienced the world entirely. >> what do you consider yourselves? >> i consider myself a young lady. >> yeah. >> young woman. >> young woman. >> reporter: and we're off, tackling the big issues with these 12 to 16-year-old young ladies in columbus, ohio. our expert clinical psychologist stephanie dowd joining moms and dads who are secretly watching as their daughters let us in on the lives of an american teenager. so social media, facebook, instagram, twitter, what am i missing? >> snapchat. >> snapchat. >> snapchat. >> snapchat. gee, i'm sorry. you feel validated by how many likes you get. >> sadly, yes. >> i know my own self-worth.

it's just an amount of how much i want to trust that. >> so let's say you go the your posts and you have very few likes. how are you feeling? >> you delete it. >> reporter: our seven panelists admit they spent anywhere between two to three hours on social media every day. do you think that social media helps or do you think it hurts more? >> helps. because if we all of us feel like that we get some sort of validation, it must be happening for all other girls in the world. >> you're all getting validation from a like button. is that healthy? >> yeah. >> no. >> no. >> for parents it's really important to make sure that they're building their daughter's self-esteem outside of social media. that they have their daughter participate in many hobbies and activities. >> reporter: like we've seen in our other panels when we pose questions about female stereotypes, we are guaranteed strong reactions. when someone saying, she runs like a girl or she plays like a girl.

oh, i can sense it already. >> it makes me so mad. when i hear something like that. >> makes you mad? >> it just makes me want to just go out there and run so fast. >> yeah, i run like a girl. i am a girl. and i'm faster than you. >> if i run like a girl i run with style. >> right. >> i think it's important that girls are brought up to be told that it's okay to stand up and speak up. girls sometimes are taught to be polite. and that if they speak up, it means they're being mean. >> reporter: at the heart of our discussion, what does it mean to be a good woman? >> keep moving up and up and bring people with you. >> care for others and care for yourself. >> standing up for what you believe in. >> reporter: how do you become a good woman? >> you just do it. >> reporter: when we reveal to the young ladies who was watching the whole time? your face is bright red. is that okay? >> yeah. >> yeah. >> yeah? anything you want to take back? >> my mom is my biggest role model. >> yes. >> yeah, yeah. >> yeah, i love my mom so much. love you, mom and dad. >> so i was struck by how confident all the young women were. how would you say that you instilled that confidence?

>> letting her struggle a little bit, not saving her. she has to do those hard things. so she's learned that she can do them. >> the whole conversation about being validated through social media. her dad said do you want someone to respect you or do you want somebody to like you? you should prefer respect. >> paula, great piece. >> how are you feeling? >> i'm still -- my heart is beating over here so fast. great piece. i'm glad we're doing this series and we'll bring in dr. stephanie dowd, a clinical psychologist and, doc, we saw you in that piece right there. and these teen girls, they are so confident. but it is a difficult time for them. a lot of change going on. how can we as parents help them be strong, powerful women? >> yeah, so in order to teach your girls to be confident and build their self-worth, it's really important to emphasize their talents. their hobbies, their efforts in school, not their appearance. so often images in the media, social media emphasize and teach

girls what's important is to be pretty and thin and that's it. it minimizes their self-worth and dignity. so parents have to really compliment their daughter on things that matter. like their talents and their hobbies. and recognize that that's what's important. not their appearance. >> yes, society is really making it difficult for them. this was so helpful. last night i was giving my daughters compliments but the last thing i said she is beautiful. i gave her four other compliments before that. but something that stood out they're getting so much of their validation from social media. that like button. can't we have a respect button? in fact, they'll delete the posts if they don't meet the threshold of likes so how are we as parents really supposed to navigate that? >> right, so it's important as parents to make sure that you teach your daughter, make sure you can find three things you love about yourself that have nothing to do with your appearance. social media, unfortunately, reinforces this idea that it's important to get likes. that it's important to be

sexualized in the media. unfortunately social media has been oversexualizing these girls and it's a catch-22 for girls. they're taught to be sexy but not too sexy. >> so confusing. >> it is so confusing. >> but they're seeking guidance from peers, as well. so, as a parent, do you just let that play out? or do you take an active role in trying to help them find supportive friends? >> it's both. i think that as a parent, you have to monitor their social activity. while at the same time giving them freedom and privacy. make sure you know their friends and the friends' parents and make sure you're having conversations with the teens. what do you think a good friend is? what do you think a good influence is and make sure in those conversations you're reinforcing those family values. >> thank you. >> thank you. e reinforcing those fall values. . . . . . .

aging you without you even realizing it. we have beauty and lifestyle expert bahar takhtehchian to show us what we could be doing better and robin teased this, bahar. what does the straw have to do with aging. >> believe it or not if you use a straw too often that continuous pursing of your lips can lead to lip lines or smoker's lines. >> right. you think about it when someone spokes a cigarette. >> right, it's prematuring aging you, ditch the straw and drink tons of water but use the glass instead. >> i love drinking iced coffee through a straw. i have to stop. >> limit it. >> okay. then you also say, the temperature that you wash your face with has an impact. >> absolutely. so you don't want to use hot water when you're washing your face. go for a lukewarm or even cold if you k the reason for this, hot water tends to destroy that skin barrier, maybes your skin red and uneven. it's also really important to not overwash your face. want to use a creamy cleanser like the stuff we have here and

wash it once. twice if you work out. >> just once a day. >> once a day is enough. dry skin lets all of the wrinkles come out so you want it to be hydrated and use something like this have cereve. >> i love to take a washcloth and then, you know, get a hot washcloth and put it on my face. you say that's a big no-no. i like doing that. all right. all right. okay. and we also have some hair and makeup tricks. >> we do. >> to show how you can keep that youthful appearance. so tell us. >> absolutely. so we have two twins here and makeup can actually age you because if you're wearing too much of it, for example, this is melissa. she looks beautiful, but she's wearing dark frosty eye shadow. really dark lips. she's overlined her lips and using a little too much glitter as well and her hair is really straight. that tends to age you sos awe get older go for something with layers and a lot of movement so i want to say thank you for -- to glam squad for giving us this

look and nunzio and our other twin, turn around with a much younger look. you see the difference. what we've done is we toned down the lips. we've gone for natural peachy cream shadow, a very matte eye and with the hair, bangs always make you look more youthful. >> really? i noticed her hair is lighter than her sister's. >> that's we did. added highlighting. as you get older your skin tends to get more pale and sallow so go for a lighter color if you can in lighter hair and keep it softer and the makeup softer. really about softening your appearance. >> absolutely. softening the appearance and really some other tips are we see that melissa here has thinner eyebrows. your eyebrows really frame your shape dough as you get older make sure you let them grow out or fill them in with a brow pencil or brow wax. >> thank you so much. very good tips and tips we can all use, bahar, thank you. and you can get even more from
