ever, the philadelphia eagles are super bowl champions. >> wow, we're world champions! >> reporter: eagles quarterback nick foles, a backup just eight weeks ago who once considered quitting the game is now super bowl mvp. and he had to outduel tom brady, the winningest quarterback in super bowl history. >> nick foles just continues to play like he's been doing this his entire life. battling against the likes of tom brady. >> reporter: the battle was one for the record books. a back and forth offensive showcase that set the mark for most yards ever by two teams in a super bowl. >> going for it all, into the end zone, and it is -- caught! >> reporter: the game included big plays. this grab by alshon jeffery in the back of the end zone. the patriots punched back. with neither team able to pull away. >> gronkowski, reaching for it, touchdown. >> reporter: the game also included trick plays.

with brady not just throwing but attempting to catch. >> just didn't make the play. it was there to be made. i missed the play. >> brady can't haul it in. >> reporter: foles and the eagles later showed them how it's done. >> trey burton, throws, caught, foles, touchdown. >> reporter: on a play they call the philly special. foles is the first quarterback ever to both catch and throw a touchdown in the same super bowl. >> and to complete the pass that the patriots could not. >> reporter: it was a game of big hits. >> brandin cooks. and he gets smacked down. >> reporter: it was a slugfest that came down to the wire. just over 2:00 left in the game, all eyes were on brady to orchestrate another of his last-minute comebacks. but then this. >> oh. >> brady gets hit. the ball is out! and philadelphia has it. >> reporter: a crippling turnover. later, one last shot on the final play of the game. a hail mary. that was not answered.

>> a jump ball. it's incomplete. >> oh, my god, oh, my god! >> reporter: eagles fans get to fly. this woman, moved to tears. at the 41-33 final score. long-time eagles fan bradley cooper cheering in the stands was also overcome with emotion. and the mvp thrilled to share his mvp moment. >> to be here with my daughter, my wife, my family, my teammates, this city, we're very blessed. >> underdogs no more. the philadelphia eagles are the super bowl champions. >> reporter: now, i'm in a space here where both teams slept under this roof last night. they're waking up to different realities. the underdog, they were handing these out on the field last night. top dog. of course, that's nick foles right there. remember this was a man who considered just two years ago, giving up football and retiring to the point he didn't want to touch a football.

he is your super bowl mvp this morning. >> you sound like you're a little hurt there this morning. your voice? you doing all right man? y'all right? >> i'm doing fine. we didn't get to sleep last night. it was one of those nights. it was worth it. great for the people of philadelphia. >> certainly was. >> i love seeing the post with the fans getting excited. we saw those. there are thousands of fans who flooded philly streets overnight some of those celebrations getting rowdy. i don't know what you would expect other than that. gio benitez is there. gio, these fans were very excited about their first super bowl win in philly. >> reporter: they were, michael. good morning to you. i got here at 1:00 a.m. it felt like the party was just getting started here. like you said, perhaps some fans got a little too rowdy. we're in front of macy's. check this out. these doors were just completely smashed. the windows smashed. you have glass everywhere. okay? i want to show you this video. the crowds were massive. thousands and thousands of people were out here.

but there's another piece of video. that shows all of the chaos that was happening in some parts of philadelphia. okay? you had cars that were set on fire. people were sliding down these poles. and over at the ritz carlton, we have video of this. people climbed on top of the awning and that awning actually collapsed. so they got some injuries there. you see that collapse right there. you had some injuries. thankfully, no deaths. back out here live. in philadelphia, you can see how proud people are, fly, eagles fly. the city is proud. that victory parade is scheduled sometime this week. perhaps right here in front of city hall. michael? >> thank you, gio. now we're going to bring in newly crowned super bowl champs zach ertz and malcolm jenkins. congratulations. super bowl champions. how you doing? >> doing great. >> amazing. can't complain at all. >> what a game. congratulations. what a game. you came in as underdogs. no one thought you could do it. three games you had to win just to get there.

did you think this day would ever come when the playoffs started? >> yeah. i mean, we said it before the game to ourselves that, tonight, we were going to shock the world. but we wouldn't shock ourselves. all season, we believed in each other. we knew what kind of team we had even with all the injuries we had. losing key players and captains and veterans, we knew that we had the best team in the league. and all we needed was the opportunity to prove that. and what a way to finish the season. >> and speaking of injuries, i mean, you had a lot of injuries. none bigger than losing your starting quarterback in carson wentz. but super bowl mvp nick foles stepped up in a big way. he had a rough start when he first went in after the rams game. did you see in practice that this guy was developing? he had a patch where you said, oh, can he carry this team? you must have seen something that everybody else didn't. >> we had all the confidence in the world in nick. i mean, he's been a successful

quarterback in the league for a long time. carson is an extremely talented football player. when he went down, there was no other quarterback in the league we wanted besides nick foles. obviously, there were times when it wasn't pretty. nick didn't have a preseason. the guy was hurt all training camp. i never got reps with him until the week 15 game against the raiders, i think it was. so, i mean, nick is an unbelievable quarterback. we had all the confidence in the world in him. the past two games, he played out of his mind. >> zach, you have had a big year. great tight end in this league, and you made the biggest play of the game for the team last night. 2:25 left in the game with that catch. there was debate. a lot of people at our "gma" super bowl party, i'm yelling, touchdown, man. did you know it was a touchdown? >> i thought it was a touchdown all along. i didn't think there was any

doubt. when they were over there for what seemed like an eternity, i was surprised. i thought i caught it at the 5 yard line. i thought i took two steps. i thought i reached for the goal line. i thought it was an easy touchdown. then, when they were over there, i guess in this league, nothing surprises you anymore in terms of the catch rule. i thought it was a touchdown all along. i don't know what would have happened to the city of philly if they overturned that one. >> i do want you to give me a quick little pep talk for the city of philadelphia. you know they'll celebrate this for years to come. i think they're going to celebrate this all week. throw the parade on friday so nobody has to go to work the next day. that's all i'm saying. what message do you have for the city of philadelphia? >> i mean, for us, man, there is no team that we would rather or no city we would rather win the super bowl for.

super bowl championship. it's the best feeling. i'm sorry, mama. it's true. best feeling in the sports world that you can have. >> how long will they stay up today? >> they'll get sleep on the plane ride back to philly. once they get there, it starts all over again. a lot more coming up on the super bowl but we're going to go to washington now and the fallout from the gop memo about the russia investigation. president trump claims the memo vindicates him. some allies in congress disagree. democrats are pressing for their release of their own memo to rebut the claims. our chief justice correspondent pierre thomas has the latest. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. the debate about the value of the controversial memo continues. one fact is becoming clear. the special counsel investigation remains intact, still looming as a potential threat to the white house. the president says the house republican memo alleging bias inside the fbi clears him in the russia investigation. tweeting this weekend, this memo totally vindicates trump in probe.

but the russian witch hunt goes on and on. the memo accuses the fbi and justice department of spying on former trump campaign adviser carter page. based on a politically tainted dossier funded by democrats but now some republicans distancing themselves from the president's claim of vindication. >> so you don't agree with president trump when he says this vindicates him in the investigation? >> i don't. bob mueller should be allowed to turn over every rock. >> reporter: a key republican on the house intelligence committee voicing his support for the special counsel bob mueller. >> there are three republicans that have seen every bit of information. all three of us have total confidence in the fbi and doj to be able to do the jobs that they have been assigned. we have confidence in bob mueller. >> reporter: democrats claiming the report was a blatant attempt to undermine mueller and protect the president. >> the interest wasn't oversight. the interest was a political hit job on the fbi in the service of the president. >> reporter: abc news learned that inside the fbi, many are frustrated.

concerned house republicans are playing politics. undermining the integrity of the bureau. they believe the document, put together by republican chairman of the house intelligence committee devin nunes, cherry-picks information. the house intelligence committee is expected to hold a vote as early as today on whether to declassify the democrats' response. >> okay, pierre, thanks very much. we turn to the investigation into the deadly train crash in south carolina. safety officials are trying to figure out how the train ended up on the wrong track. abc's david kerley has the latest from the scene. >> reporter: this morning, investigators say the tragic remains of this crash were avoidable. a switch was in the wrong position. causing a head-on collision, sending passengers flying. >> we just woke up to a real loud boom. next thing you know, i was bouncing off chairs. chairs was flying. cell phones. laptops. >> reporter: the seven-car amtrak train diverted on to a side track, slamming into a parked freight train.

>> everybody was screaming. i knew we were in big trouble. i knew that either we were going to start flipping or that we were going to implode. >> reporter: the engineer and conductor were killed. more than 100 of the 139 passengers treated at local hospitals. the southbound amtrak train 91 headed to miami from new york was passing through columbia, south carolina in the middle of the night. the switch was thrown. locked. diverting train 91 on to a side track. and a parked csx train was on the track. within seconds, traveling between 50 and 60 miles an hour, the amtrak train slams into the stationary freight train. the question is, why was that switch set the way it was? >> i think you're exactly right. finding out why that switch, that track switch, was set the way that it was, that will be key to the investigation. >> reporter: investigators are still working down these tracks.

timberlake's halftime show, that selfie moment with a young fan and his tribute to prince made headlines this morning. back to t.j. in minnesota with more. >> reporter: strahan, would you believe some people were upset with justin timberlake's halftime performance before it started. word leaked a few days ago that he would use a hologram to honor prince. the way he chose to honor prince, still some people were not sold on it. ♪ i want to rock your body >> did you catch that? justin timberlake entered the stadium singing "rock your body." yep, the same song he performed 14 years ago with janet jackson when she had that infamous malfunction. fans hoping for a reunion with

one other note on prince and the hologram. he spoke to it before his death. he found it demonic to use these kinds of tools and technology to put artists together, living artists, with dead artists. he said, hey, if i was meant to jam with duke ellington, we would have lived in the same era. some controversy but a heck of a performance from a talented guy, justin timberlake, last night. >> very talented. great performance. i guess they wanted to pay tribute to prince. game in minnesota. he was a big vikings fan. >> and his family signed off on it in the end. >> yeah. >> it was beautiful. the purple on the snow. it was gorgeous. >> great tribute to prince. couldn't get any better than that in my opinion. they did it as classy a way as you could do it. you know what was classy? that selfie. it created a breakout star. 13-year-old ryan is joining us now. ryan, how are you, my friend? did you know what happened in the second half of the game because you were getting a lot of attention after that moment with justin timberlake?

it's called "brotopia." paula faris is back. you had a chance to sit with the author, paula. >> it's not just discrimination and harassment. the allegations in the book are jaw-dropping. sex parties. drug parties. and these are the people that are programming games for our kids. and shaping nearly everything that we see and hear. it's a powerful expose with shocking allegations. the author taking us inside what she's calling the brotopia world of silicon valley. people look at the book and think it's for people in tech and silicon valley. why should it be of interest to everyone? >> silicon valley is controlling what we see. what we read, how we shop, how we relate to people, how we communicate. this is an industry that is making the video games our children play. the social media apps that they use. men alone can't be making all of these decisions. >> you write about sex parties. drug parties. deals done in hot tubs. is this how business gets done? in silicon valley?

>> a lot of business in silicon sadly gets done outside the office. the bar, the hotel lobby. the conference, the hot tub. the party. i was surprised how much business gets done in a hot tub. and how you'll hear investors brag about it. what woman wants to get in a bikini and pitch a business in a hot tub? >> who are the women they're inviting? >> women from the industry. lower level women. lower level entrepreneurs. i have talked to both men and women part of this scene and i have interviewed over three dozen people intimately familiar with the parties, or have felt completely shut out by these parties. for many of the women, they felt like they were sort of damned if they did, damned if they didn't. if they participate, they're discredited or disrespected. if they don't go, they're missing out on an opportunity to network with powerful people. >> reporter: and the gender gap is wide. women holding just 25% of computing jobs. only 7% are partners.

at the top venture capital firms. and in 2017, female tech founders received just 2% of venture capital dollars. >> we need women building products, as well. >> reporter: is the simple solution just to hire more women? >> that's one solution. i think, number one, we need to stop tolerating and enabling bad behavior. i think we need to change our idea of who can do these jobs. and three, i think ceos and the leaders of these companies need to lead from the top. and make hiring and promoting women an explicit priority. >> reporter: she says there is a significant amount of rot at the top of these companies right now. it's her hope that silicon valley reads the book and they can start a meaningful conversation. these people have so much power and influence. they're really shaping the world. she wants them to change this part of it. >> shocking things in this book. >> jaw-dropping. >> without a doubt. thank you so much.
