moves and stay patient. elizabeth hur from for abcnews, back to you. has president trump actually weighed in on today's market meltdown? >> reporter: well, actually president trump was in ohio talking to speakers at an event, but he so far has made no mention of the market. but late this afternoon, sarah sanders did release a statement again touting low unemployment and wage growth, stressing the fundamentals of the economy remain, quote, exceptionally strong. back to you. elizabeth hur live in washington. meanwhile, wells fargo stock plummeted following punitive action. it will not allow wells to grow any larger until it cleans up its act. widespread consumer abuses were cited, including the numerous

fake customer accounts. their stock dropped over six points. 9% of its value. a dump truck plowed into several cars at the intersection of fountaingrove parkway and mendocino avenue. it smashed into nine cars. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman joins us live from the scene in santa rosa. is the area back open to traffic yet? >> reporter: still not open. the intersection is partially open at this point. but the investigation over my shoulder continues. it september sevnt seven people hospital, three in critical condition. imagine waking up to this, the scene michelle trammell shot on her mobile phone this morning after a horrific accident in santa rosa. >> all i saw was flames and smoke and people running and people screaming inside the vehicles. >> reporter: it began when a

dump truck appears to have lost its brakes going downhill toward me mendocino avenue. >> he was going to try to shoot through and didn't make t. >> reporter: he barrelled through nine cars. tossing them like dominoes. >> i hear honk, honk, honk. boom, right behind me. >> reporter: larry broderick barely made it through. what he saw seconds later? >> a "terminator" movie. debris, pops, booms. >> reporter: and something else, though larry wasn't the person to tell us about it. >> if it wasn't for him handling the situation in the timely fashion he did, those people would have perished. >> reporter: larry broderick grabbed bystanders and went door to door saving injured victims. >> broken bones, steering wheels forced into people's abdomens

and heads hitting windshields. >> reporter: and that from a man who lost his own home in a firestorm last objecctober. >> no fatalities. >> reporter: so said the firestorm survivor. the intersection remains closed. the santa rosa police department will take that dump truck and do an investigation. one of the places they'll look really hard, the brake system. wayne freedman, abc 7 news. meantime, a major crash tied up traffic on the san mateo bridge. the this is video from sky 7 showing pieces of debris littering the highway. the driver of the u-haul truck and cal trans worker were hurt. eastbound lanes were closed for about two hours. thousands of residents depended on this mobile care

unit, but look what happened here. a suspect the arsonist that vehicle as it sat. david louie looks at the ever ord -- effort to get it replaced. >> reporter: it fell victim to suspected arson early sunday morning, parked behind gardner family health services. >> the unit goes out at least once a week. that is a big impact. we do have a doctor and medical assistant that are on that unit providing services. so it is a setback. we do need to get this replaced as soon as possible. >> reporter: this is youtube video of the unit. it's the larger of two mobile health centers. computers and diagnostic equipment inside were destroyed. the estimated replacement cost is $250,000.

roberta gunderson is worried about the impact on fragile patients who won't get flu shots or counseling as a result of the loss of the mobile unit. >> it's going to take at least six months to get back on the road again. i can see at least 500 people going without services. >> reporter: patients on average get services three times a year in these unit. the arson unit is investigating. the surveillance cameras are decoys, so no video was record. >> i sure hope it's not someone anti-homeless or anti-anything gardner does. we play a role trying to serve our homeless population. >> reporter: david louie, abc 7 news. >> as they mentioned, potenti potential replacement cost is $250,000. can you go to the gardner health

website or our website. i'm a little distracted. the picture behind us is so gorgeous. we are seeing another record breaking temperature in los angeles. >> we are live outside mt. tam. we'll try that again tomorrow. >> we were told we couldn't go out and play until after the news. here's a look at live doppler 7. we've had more than a week of record or near record warmth. today we had record highs. here's san jose topping out at 78 degrees, topping the old record of 75. and monterey breaking the old record of 73. right now it's 70 in san francisco. mid to upper 70s in many inland locations like san jose, up at santa rosa, 75. the inland east bay, concord, 80 degrees. it's going to be a little gusty during the overnight hours, especially in the hills of the north bay and east bay.

has been living here for several months. today she has to move. >> we lose our stuff, you know, and we don't know where we're going. >> reporter: homeless advocates say the googleville sign is meant to show the great divide in silicon valley. >> the more money that tech companies make, the more homelessness we have. if you raid tead the statisticsy go up year after year after year. >> reporter: google says they are aware of the problem and the donations they've made to address it. they say they will be an active participant, centering around plans for a large development in downtown san jose. housing advocates say the first step is getting the more than 4,300 homeless people in san jose off the streets and into housing. but until that happens, these sweeps will continue. >> we don't know where we're going. we don't know what we're doing, you know? >> people are moving toward solutions here, we're going

now to an expose in the tech industry. bloomberg news anchor emily chang has a brand-new book on what she calls the boys club of silicon valley. she says the deck is stacked against women in tech and alleges everything from discrimination to drug-fueled sex-laced parties. >> reporter: you mentioned how a lot of the business is done outside of the office. you even visited the gold club, the strip club lunch spot in silicon valley. what did you learn from that? >> at 11:45 a.m. on a friday,

the line was out the door. and a lot of the people there were tech workers on their lunch break. this is in the middle of a working day. i talked to a number of the women working at this club and they said yes, they hear colleagues talking about business. they might go up to a private room together. this is a stone's throw from so many tech companies in the heart of san francisco. and the main point is that so much business in silicon valley, as you said, gets done outside the office, whether it's the strip club or the hotel lobby or the bar. you know, or the sidelines of a conference. and unfortunately, that leads to some gray areas, lines get blurred, and often women can be put in very uncomfortable situations. >> and you mention, i mean one of those uncomfortable situations is a hot tub. and it's not that things necessarily happen in that hot tub. but even asking a woman to wear a bathing suit, wear a bikini and pitch her business in that setting must make a lot of women

incredibly uncomfortable. >> i spoke to one particular investor who in fact spoke a lot about his hot tub parties. he sounded like he was bragging about them. and, you know, these are parties that he's having with entrepreneurs in his portfolio. and then i spoke to a woman, katrina lake, the founder of stitch fix. and she said what woman wants to get into a bikini and pitch an investor a business while hold ago beer? like this is just not a level playing field. in an industry where the bigger picture is that women-led companies get 2% of funding. women account for 7% of investors in the most progressive industry in the world, with the smartest people in the world, that's unacceptable. >> something i thought was interesting, for as progressive as the industry is, i was fascinated that the current situation wasn't always this way. google put effort into recruiting incredible female talent early on.

so what happened here? >> women actually were critical part to the tech industry in the early days. they were programming computers for the military, computers for nasa. and then these personality tests started to profile women out. the industry was so desperate for new programmers that they hired two psychologists who determined that people who don't hike peop like people are good at computers. if you look at people who don't like people you're going to hire far more men than women. unfortunately, those personality tests were wildly influential had this stereotype that white, anti-social male nerds could do this job. larry and sergei, the founders, really focussed on hiring women in the early days and they got susan who

bay. here's a lovely view of the western sky. looking from the east bay hills. 75 in santa rosa. fairfield, 75. 80 in concord and 75 in livermore. and a beautiful view from sutro tower. we will have above average temperatures for the remainder of the week. slightly cool ever by the weeke by a few degrees. let's take a look at overnight conditions. clear skies with low temperatures mainly in the mid-40s in the inland valleys, and about 51 here in san francisco. and looking ahead, it's going to turn a bit breezy tonight, and the reason for that is this alignment of high pressure offshore, the pressure gradient is producing strong, gusty wind which will be stronger in the hills of the north bay and east bay. about midnight or so, we'll see

winds up around 23 miles per hour in napa. during the overnight hours, winds in the hills rather strong. let's take a look at our wind concerns before the winds diminish tomorrow. mainly north bay and east bay hills will be affected by the strong gusty winds. and of koscourse that increases fire danger. as we look at tomorrow's high, it's going to be a warm day with temperatures in the mid-70s. san francisco 70. and at the coast, highs in the low to mid-70s again tomorrow. here's a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. there won't be much change in the temperature range. low to mid-70s near the bay and inland through the remainder of the week with slight coastal cooling on friday, then a little cooler everywhere over the weekend but it does remain sunny and dry. and we're sunny and dry today when i visited laurel school,

direction but are expected to reopen soon. the driver that struck the motorcycle is cooperating with investigators. here are the stories making headlines now at 4:30. the stock market ended a wild day with the single day drop of all time. it plunged near meantime in ohio today president trump talked about his tax reform bill. he tweeted, quote, thanks to the historic tax cuts, your paychecks are going way up. now back here in the bay area, six people were hospitalized, two with serious injuries after a dump truck crashed into at least nine cars in santa rosa. the san francisco police department will have a new big brother watching over them as well. the california department of justice will now make sure that the ongoing reforms to the department are implemented. abc 7 news reporter

li lien dez is in the news center. >> they were being supported by the department of justice in washington over there. then came president trump, who quickly took a hands-off approach. and rather than geoive all of tt up, police here asked for help elsewhere. the shooting by police in 2015 forced the department to reform its use of force policy. under the obama administration, they agreed to act as big brother. but last year president trump decided to scale back the program, that's until the california department of justice under xavier becerra decided it would take on the job. >> simply because the federal government decided to abandon ship did not mean we were going to let that ball drop.

>> reporter: under washington's supervision the police department had received 272 recommendations. today half of them have been implemented or are close to being approved. >> use of force has dropped 18% in 2017. we hope that trend continues. >> reporter: citizen complaints also dropped by 9% in 2017. community leaders who fought for these reforms say while police are making progress they need an independent body to make sure they follow through. >> because at the end of the day, i want my son to come home. and at the end of the day i want the officer that i know to go home to his family. that's what we want. that's public safety. >> reporter: becerra promised the funding would be there. >> they're committed. so we're going to be in there with them. and we'll find the resources to make it happen on their end as they are finding on their theire the resources to make it happen.

>> again, the u.s. attorney general jeff sessions has said he isn't sure the federal government should be overseeing local cops. in the newsroom, leanne melendez, abc 7 news. disgraced sports doctor larry nassar received another long prison sentence today. a judge sentenced him to 40 to 125 years years in prison. that's in addition to the 40 to 175 years from a case in another county, and the 60 years he received for child pornography charges. the 54 year old apologized before the judge announced the sentence today. >> it's impossible to convey the depth of how sorry i am to each involved. the testimonies will always be present in my thoughts. >> in all, 260 women and girls say nassar sexually abused them

under the guise of medical treatment. l.a. county sheriff's investigators are getting closer to understanding what happened to actress natalie wood who died 37 years ago. reports were confirmed that robert wagner is now a person of interest in the case. they refused to call him a suspect but appear suspicious about his actions the night of the death. >> we'd love to hear his side of the version of events. the version of events he's portrayed in the media. he told the original investigators and portrayed since then, don't really add up to what we've found. >> wood drowned during a yachting trip to catalina in 1981 with wagner, christopher walken. and there was an account of a fight between wood and wagner the night she died. no comment tonight from wagner.

washington is bracing for a fight over memos. democrats say they have a memo of their own and are ready to release it. tara palmieri has the latest. >> reporter: president trump took off to ohio to praise his tax plan. but first he praised devin nunes, claiming that he's quote, a man of tremendous courage and grit, that was after slamming adam schiff who criticized the gop claire and white hou gop chair and the white house. he tweeted little adam schiff who is desperate to run for higher office is one of the biggest liars and leakers in washington. it claims that the fbi obtained a warrant to spy on carter page funded solely by the clinton campaign. but schiff has a memo of his own he wants released. he fired back, instead of tweeting false smears, the

>> thanks for having me. >> i think maybe a lot of people have forgotten over the past year we have had tremendous swings. the market has been so volatile. i think sometimes there's this knee jerk rae action when something like this happens. >> risk is still a four-letter word. we don't want to take risk. but without taking proper risk your money's not going to grow. from last year to this year, the dow's up from 20,000 to 26,000. we have a good conducive market. healthy corrections are always something we're going to have. this was, in my view, a healthy correction. >> you mentioned correction. is it a surprise? what is the difference here? and a lot of people are trying to wrap their heads around the cause of it. >> the basic cause is all the information has been so superlative. low unemployment numbers, great wage growth. the gross domestic product is

going to, se going to exceed 3%. the federal reserve gets nervous and may have to raise rates three or four times to augment the cost of inflation. it's important to walk the balancing act that the federal reserve has to walk and make sure we don't have outrageous growth but moderate growth that can keep it contained. >> a mentor once told me sometimes you need to sit and be still. maybe that applies in this case, too. >> you don't panic, don't sell. stick to your money personality. don't sell because the market's down. it's certainly a good idea to diversify. don't put all your money in bitcoin. >> all sorts of cryptocurrency. also we have heard from other advisers. their advice being invest in international markets, for example. maybe there's insecurity there. what is your advice on that?

>> sometimes international markets can be even more volatile. europe is about three or four years behind us. we printed money after the great recession fairly quickly. europe was just coming out. internationally, we think 2018 should be a fairly good market to be in. stick to your risk appetite, your money personality. >> many thanks to you, pat betucci. >> thanks for having mae. now your accuweather forecast. >> it's spring-like, almost summer-like. but overnight it's going to get down into the kofrcomfortably c range. we'll see low 40 the in the inland valley locations. it might feel cooler than it actually is. but tomorrow will be another sunny and spectacle day with low 70s in the coast, and around the bay. and low 70s in the inland locations. how long will this dry spell last?

people in alameda county now have a new way to ask for help. today the sheriff's office rolled out text to 911. >> they're encouraging people to call if they can and text if they can't. melanie woodrow shows us how it works. >> reporter: the alameda dispatch center receives

approximately 4,000 911 calls per month. today the center is equipped to also receive texts to 911. >> we want you to call if you can call but text if you have to. >> it will be a good thing, for the deaf, hard-of-hearing community. >> reporter: as well as victims for home invasions or domestic violence. >> we do use different tactics as far as if someone's inside, breathe into the phone so we know you're on the line. but texts in those instances would have helped a lot. >> reporter: the text to 911 is in its first phase and the system isn't perfect. if you text close enough to a freeway, the text will go to the chp. that agency will need to route it to the correct agency. that takes time. >> chp is forwarding it to us. >> reporter: the first questions dispatchers ask is for the
