burglary at the home of football superstar rob gronkowski. and later, the new controversy over women-friendly doritos. we do say good morning on this tuesday, everyone, and begin with your money and the growing concerns about big losses on wall street. >> overnight asian markets fell sharply following wall street's lead. at one point the major stock average in japan slid more than 7% before recovering some of that loss. abc's serena marshall is looking at what's behind the losses and what's in store for today. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kendis, diane, good morning. it was a tough day on wall street but analysts and the white house caution simply part of the ups and downs of the market. single biggest one-day drop. anxious traders as it plummeted 1500 points before rebounding and ending still down more than 1100 points. but before you go racing to make

changes to your 401(k), that big drop isn't signaling another great recession. >> the stock market has gone too far too fast. it is just appropriate to hit the reset button. if we look at the results from last year, they're way above the normal historic averages. >> reporter: those historic highs, wage growth and job gains a signal for the federal reserve to hike interest rates leading investors to fear a correction. the white house is downplaying the drop as typical market seesaw. >> today's sell-off represents the ebb and flow of our stock markets. >> reporter: noticeably silent on the decline, however, the president, who often takes credit for market gains as indicative of his policies. >> i told you, the stock market is hitting one all-time record after another. >> reporter: but even with those drops, one thing to keep in mind, the long term. it's not about trying to time the market.

>> if you had put $1,000 into the market one year ago, you would have made as of today $200 on top of that. that money would be safe as of today even in spite of today's losses. >> reporter: it's likely today we'll see another tough opening with the dow futures way down but analysts say before acting take a deep breath and remember this drop was expected given those record highs. kendis, diane. >> serena, thank you. and overnight markets were down looking at a down open when wall street gets going. >> that, indeed. turning to the russia investigation, there's word this morning that president trump's lawyers are urging him not to agree to an interview with special counsel robert mueller. sources say the lawyers may be pushing for the president to answer questions in writing even though he's already said he's willing to talk. this morning, concerns growing among president trump's legal team. abc news has learned the president's lawyers are advising him against sitting down with the special counsel robert mueller. sources say the concern is that

the president could contradict himself during a wide-ranging interview. abc news political contributor chris christie, former governor, and u.s. attorney for new jersey agrees, the president should not sit down with mueller. >> should the president sit down with him face-to-face? >> no. >> why not? >> i don't believe so. listen, i don't think there's been any allegations, credible allegations against the president of the united states and unless there are credible allegations, which i don't believe there are should be sitting across the special counsel. i don't think they should do that and i think the administration has been cooperative in other ways. >> reporter: less than two weeks ago he said he would talk with mueller even under oath. >> i would do it under oath. i would do it. i'm looking forward to it actually. >> yeah. >> do you have a date set? >> just so you understand there's been no collusion whatsoever. >> reporter: refusing an interview with mueller could set up a court fight prolonging the special counsel's investigation. another showdown taking shape

former white house chief strategist steve bannon will not testify before a house intelligence committee despite a subpoena. the house intelligence committee is conducting a separate investigation from mueller's looking into the russian interference in the leng. the committee ordered bannon to return to capitol hill this morning after a meeting last month when he refused to answer questions about his time working for trump. he cited executive privilege, a claim the committee's top democrat called breathtaking. and two sources close to bannon say the committee has not determined the proper scope of questioning with the white house. bannon could be charged with contempt of congress. a memo written by democrats on the house intelligence committee as a rebuttal is now in the hands of president trump. the committee voted to release the document which is expected to shoot down claims of surveillance abuses by fbi and justice department officials conducting the russia probe. the white house says the president will not commit to making that memo public before it's reviewed. colorado is mourning the

third sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty within the last five months. 34-year-old michael flick was investigating a stolen car in colorado springs when he was shot and killed during a struggle. three other officers and a bystander were injured. the suspect was killed. deputy flick leaves behind a wife and 7-year-old twins. a data recorder was recovered from the amtrak train involved in sunday's deadly crash in south carolina. investigators say crews from the freight company csx left a track switch in the wrong position. that caused the amtrak train to divert onto the same track as a csx train. an engineer tried to stop it but slammed into the parked train at more than 50 miles per hour. authorities just released new 911 recordings. >> we derailed and everybody flew to the front of the train. the seats are not even on the chair anymore. everything is everywhere. >> the train's conductor and an engineer were killed and more

than 100 passengers injured. the sad irony is the track signal light system was out at the time of the crash because csx was installing a train control safety system which would have prevented that crash. time now for a look at your weather for this tuesday morning. a winter storm is blamed for crashes that killed at least 13 people in the midwest. this crash in iowa involved more than 50 vehicles including a "dancing with the stars" tour bus. some of the cast and crew actually suffered minor injuries. that storm is now passing south and southeast of the great lakes. some areas like cleveland could get several inches of snow. temperatures today will be below normal in the midwest. moderate along the east coast. 40 here in new york and mild in the south and west today. well, coming up, a young teacher falls victim to the flu as we learn this year's flu season could last even longer. also ahead, historic

breach. that's in the words of senator chuck schumer after reuters reported the investigation launched by the consumer protection financial bureau stalled since president trump's budget director took over the investigation. it affected 143 million american, nearly eight out of every ten adults with a credit card. the death toll is mounting, almost daily, in this season's dangerous flu epidemic. this morning we're hearing about the death of a second grade teacher outside ft. worth, texas. 38-year-old heather holland, a mother of two reportedly died within a week of being diagnosed and just days after being treated with tamiflu. her school had just undergone a deep cleaning. the cdc is now warning this flu season could last well into may. and disturbing new details about the man arrested for the highway crash in indianapolis that killed nfl player edwin jackson and his uber driver. authorities say manuel orrego-savala who is accused of driving drunk and was in the u.s. illegally from guatemala had been deported twice and was previously convicted of dui in california.

police say his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit. and the california highway patrol ended a dangerous high-speed chase in the los angeles area with a pit maneuver right there, bumping the vehicle with a police cruiser. the driver was suspected of stealing this dodge charger. during the chase he was clocked at 119 miles an hour. the weather in florida today is expected to be good for a historic rocket launch by spacex. the company's so-called falcon heavy rocket is set to take off for the first time and they test-fired it last month. that went well. the rocket can produce the same amount of thrust as 18 747 jumbo jets. eventually it's meant to send spacecraft to the moon, mars and beyond. the cargo for today's flight will be a tesla roadster. the car owned by spacex boss elon musk. >> harrison ford will be there to watch it before it's named after his old ship.

with his incredible comedic timing in his most famous role, the cranky but lovable father on "frasier." mahoney sadly has died after reportedly suffering from throat cancer. five years ago on "good morning america" he reflected on his role as frasier's dad. >> i don't think there's anything i'm more proud of than my role on "frasier." >> he appeared in "moonstruck" and "primal fear." he was 77 years old. investigators in los angeles now say they're closer to understanding how natalie wood died 36 years ago. >> she drowned while boating off the california coast with actor robert wagner in 1981. actor christopher walken and the boat's captain was on board that night. no one has been charged but the speculation over the cause never ended. >> investigators are quick to say this is not a murder investigation, but they would like to talk to wagner. >> he's a person of interest because he's the last person with her before she went in the

water. the version of events he's portrayed in the media really don't add up to what we found. >> wagner who is now 87 years old has refused to talk to investigators in the past. and the winner of last month's $560 million powerball jackpot is now waging a legal battle to hold on to her anonymity. the woman is suing new hampshire's lottery commission to allow her to designate a trustee to be the public face of her winning ticket. she says she made a huge mistake in signing the back of her winning ticket without first consulting a lawyer. >> the average consumer is not walking into a convenience store buying a lottery ticket and reading the fine print. i think most winners would be surprised to know that they don't have an option to remain anonymous. >> under new hampshire this law a lottery's winner's name, town and prize is public information but she could have shielded that with a trust rather than her own name.

in medical news some who drink tea are being urged to let it cool off before taking that first sip. a new study warns drinking tea considering burning hot can because a two to five times increase in your risk for throat cancer. but only in people who also smoke or drink alcohol on a daily basis. the hot tea can irritate the lining of the esophagus making it more vulnerable to cancer-causing agents like tobacco and alcohol. and police south of boston have responded to a reported burglary at the home of new england patriots superstar rob gronkowski. he was seen at the door of his home just a few miles from the patriots stadium. officers were seen in the house and garage but did not release details about the investigation. the patriots got home from the super bowl last night. and philadelphia public schools will be closed on thursday so students can attend the eagles super bowl celebration. preparations are under way at philly's art museum where the team will hold a victory rally and bud light representatives will be along the parade route giving patrons

hold on tight. we may be in for another rocky day on wall street after an 1,100-point plunge yesterday. global markets are down this morning. it is 4:27 on this tuesday, february 6th. we're all here for you. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. weather is not doing that whatsoever. we keep going up or staying steady. yesterday was our fifth consecutive day with record highs. today it's possible a sixth. did you notice the breezes? if you live in the hills 12 to 24 miles an hour and look at our temperatures. i noticed at my house it was very mild this morning. we have a lot of upper 40s to mid-50s out there to even 57 right now in places like los gatos, half moon bay. 56 in san francisco. oakland, 47. san jose 50. 48 in santa rosa.

we are standing at key street and 8th street about a block over from spartan stadium here, the san jose state football stadium and you can see there are a lot of police officers on the scene doing a major investigation. i talked to an officer. he said it was a car stopped, but obviously there's more to it than that. that was on that scene on humboldt street. they have a big area blocked off to traffic in all directions, and they have a lot of crime scene tape up. we're still looking for more details from a police lieutenant here on the scene. not too far from here two people were killed in a shooting. police say they had multiple calls of shots fired at the denny's restaurant around 10:50. a male and female with one gunshot wound each. they both died at the scene. homicide investigators are there as well. traffic is blocked off in all directions. at this scene here, though, traffic is blocked off at 9th and key street and humboldt
