"the new york times" is reporting that president trump's lawyer does not want him to meet with special counsel robert mueller. former white house strategist steve bannon was supposed to testify yesterday. reports say that has been delayed. new at 6:00, did amazon drop

6:18 am
hi, everybody. the first signs of a warm day unfolding in the south bay as we look at san jose and 280 at 17. brighter, drier, and warm again this afternoon. that's my first accuweather highlight. calm, clear, and cooler tonight. i have a change in our weekend plans at least weatherwise. two jet streams and that is what's steering all the storms right around as we have strong high pressure over the top of us and that offshore flow will bring warmth to the coast. 17 at half moon bay. 76 in san francisco. 75 in oakland. san mateo, some of the cool spots. the rest of us are in the upper 70s to almost 80 in some neighborhood inland. a look at the south bay, 49 this morning. look at that, 20 degrees warmer by noon. 69. 76 at 4:00. 64 at 7:00. let's look at your high temperatures, 76 in milpitas. 79 degrees. all right, up in the north bay we have 46 to 71. look at that jump. 35 degrees. 25 degrees, excuse me, by noon.
6:19 am
and then 77 at 4:00. 59 at 7:00. let's take a look at temperatures. clover dale possibly. 78 today in napa and novato. lows tonight, a lot of mid to upper 40s in most neighborhoods. some 50s to low 50s around oakland, san mateo. here is a look at my seven-day forecast. you'll see temperatures pretty steady through friday. and then an inside slider that will bring snow showers to the sierra will drop our temperatures back into the low to mid-60s by monday. sue? good morning. and an earlier accident before the toll plaza cleared. now look at the brake lights across the entire span. filling in since the accident out of lanes. near 23rd, that accident cleared but the damage done. southbound is improving but northbound 880 still very slow back from the coliseum. it should be recovering shortly. if you can wait a few more
6:20 am
minutes to get on 580 or 880 you're in good luck. currently we have this accident still blocking a lane north 101 near -- pardon me, near tully, after tully and 13th street and that is slowing things. they hope to get that out of lanes. it is blocking the right lane, lane number four. traffic backed up to the capital expressway. we'll come back and take a look at your toll plaza commute in a few minutes from the bay bridge. sue, bay area traffic is the worst. actually, it's not. for the sixth year in a row the most congested city is los angeles. this according to a new report out this morning from traffic analytics firm. now drivers in l.a. spend 102 hours stuck in traffic last year. new yorkers spent 91 hours battling congestion followed by the rest of us here in the bay area. san francisco in particular, 79 hours.
6:21 am
atlanta and miami round out the top five u.s. cities with the worst traffic. 79 hours is still nothing to sneeze at. right now go to what you think about the lottery lawsuit. the $560 million powerball winner is suing to remain anonymous and this is the question, do you think that lottery winners should be able to remain anonymous? you vote yes or no. lottery officials claim she gave up her right to do that after signing the back of the ticket and that in the small print it released the owner's right to anonymity. the winner says she didn't read the fine print and only signed the back because the lottery website told her to do so. and that raises the question. go to abc7news.com/vote and vote. we are tabulating the results right now and you are speaking, 95% of you saying, yes, you should be able to remain anonymous. >> lottery officials say you can avoid this -- she could have avoided this by signing not her

name but signing the name of a trust. first you have to set up a trust, contact somebody. you can't just sign it right away. now you know the next time you win the lottery. >> that fine print can get you in trouble. how people in san francisco feel about those red transit only lanes. and a training exercise turns into a real-life operation. the whole thing was caught on camera. first, let's check in with a look at what's ahead on "good morning america." good morning. coming up on "gma" we'll give you some ideas what you can do with your money as the dow experiences its largest single day drop in history. plus, the man at the center of the gop memo, carter page, joins us live in our studio this morning as the russia inve

check out the temperatures, notice the lack of asterisks. only san jose's 78 is a record high temperature. gives you an idea how warm it was several years ago in the 80s for record highs. that's nothing to sneeze at, reggie. >> thanks, mike. an aircrew at the sheriff's office was in the right place at the right time. they were in the middle of a training rescue when they
6:26 am
spotted something unusual down below, a calf that got its head stuck in a tree. they landed nearby. you can see the calf couldn't get out so they broke the stump away to set the calf back running again. it's unclear how long the animal had been there, but the crew said it looked like it had been a while. turns out one of the best counties to live in in the u.s. is right here in the bay area. according to the website marin county ranks number nine. education, poverty rate, life expectancy determine the ranking. a typical household earns just over $100,000 a year. only about 8% of the population lives below the poverty line. life expectancy 83 years. how caltrain makes it easier to buy tickets. >> you can now text 911. there are some major rules, though, you need to know about. plus, the stock market opens in just minutes. it could be another rough day, i'll have an update on how the dow is doing moments

6:30 am
in history. >> now to a special report with george stephanopoulos. we are coming on the air with the opening bell on wall street. there it is. the dow coming off two tough days, 1,175-point drop yesterday on top of 666 points on friday as you see right there the dow down again starting this morning. the third day in a row. wiped out all the gains for the last year. i'm here for the first month of the year. and rebecca jarvis, business correspondent, last year the markets down more than 500 points. officially down 10% from its high. they call this a correction. >> exactly, george. correction territory means after a long upward trajectory, which we have now been on for many, many years, after a long upward trajectory, the dow now down more than 10%. that is in the near term. and oftentimes wall street is looking for something like a correction, george, to say it's safe to get back into the market. that's what traders look at it as.
6:31 am
for the long-term investor, people who have a 401(k), that nest egg, it's all about thinking over the long term. >> let's put this into context. the dow coming off a powerful run for many years. >> nine years essentially, george. if you look at the last nine years since march of 2009, the markets have been on an upward trajectory about 160% higher since january of 2009. in just the last year even after all of the sell-off we've seen in recent days, in just the last year stocks are still over the full year up about 20%. in the last couple of weeks so far this year stocks are now negative. but even here at 23,854 points, we're back to basically where stocks were late in 2017. you're basically seeing the marks shave off about three months of work. >> in part the result of a strong economy. we'll be watching this all day long. you'll be back for the west coast edition of "gma" and for
6:32 am
you at home you can get breaking news alerts by downloading our app. all right. that was a special report you were just watching. a lot of people watching the stock market this morning, of course, after that huge plunge we saw yesterday and it looks like we may be seeing a repeat today as well. >> and rebecca jarvis made a good point when you look at the percentages of what we're down -- >> what happened over the last nine years. >> look at what happened. it's a percentage overall. we're so high up the percentage is not going as far down as most of us feared when we saw the raw numbers. there's no time to panic. >> we'll keep tracking that for you. you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. here is meteorologist mike nicco. let's talk about our weather which is going to stay very even
6:33 am
keeled the next couple of days, near record high temperatures. it all starts with a dry live doppler 7. a look at my 12-hour accuweather planner. 47 to 53. breezes keeping temperatures all over the place. shelter valley is the coolest. now by noon, 67 to 71 at the coast. 70 to 76 for the dry air and total sunshine at 4:00. still a gorgeous evening, 60 to 63. let's see what sue is watching for your morning commute. updating a couple of problem spots, our traffic maps. right now we have a gentleman sitting in the fast lane in the car banging his head against the seat so something strange happening there. fortunately it's not really slowing their other drive. chp is en route to make sure that person is okay. an earlier accident heading to the toll plaza of the san mateo bridge cleared but traffic is still bumper to bumper heading to the tolls from 880. and speaking of 880 another accident just cleared about 20 minutes ago north at 23rd.
6:34 am
but still the damage is done there with very slow traffic heading northbound from the coliseum making it just a grind. if you'd like a better route 580. a quick look to the south bay where we had an accident, 101 in the northbound direction. this one near 13th street that is still blocking lane number four and traffic is backed up beyond the capital expressway here in san jose. still following breaking news in san jose. police handling two investigations there this morning, just one mile apart. the first one a double shooting at 1st street and east alma avenue happened at a denny's. the other incident was at 9th and keyes which is where we find abc 7 news reporter matt keller with the newest information. matt? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. i just spoke with the bakery owner of the bakery that sits on the other side of this crime scene tape here on keyes street,
6:35 am
across the street from the car wash. he says officers told him this is a homicide and they're asking him for the video from the surveillance camera at the time of the shooting. we have new video we just shot in the past 20 minutes. these detectives walked up about a block from the main crime scene on 9th street and keyes to humboldt street next to the spartan stadium complex to check out this car. we were told earlier this was the scene of a car stop after the homicide. no word if this is the suspect's vehicle or how it is involved in the case. the focus for investigators and the crime scene unit has been near the car wash at 9th street and keyes street. not too far from here two people were killed. police got multiple calls of shots fired. officers found a male and female with at least one gunshot wound each. they both died at the scene. here at the scene on keyes street, this is a busy area for traffic. the investigation has only been taking place for about two hours. no word on when they expect to
6:36 am
finish up and open up all these roads. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. and now we do want to get back to the stock market plunge. the dow is already plunging this morning. this morning we're down about 10%. so what does this mean for your 401(k)? serena marshall in washington will help us understand this. >> reporter: good morning. another tough day on wall street but analysts and the white house caution it's part of the ups and downs of the markets. it was the single biggest one-day drop in history. anxious traders as the dow plummeted before rebounding and ending the day still down more than 1,100 points. but before you go racing to make changes to your 401(k), that big drop isn't signaling another great recession. >> the stock market has gone too far too fast. it is just appropriate to hit the reset button. if we look at the results from
6:37 am
last year, they're way above the normal historic averages. >> reporter: those historic highs, wage growth and job gains, a signal for the federal reserve to hike interest rates leading investors to fear a correction. the white house is downplaying the drop as typical market seesaw. >> today's sell-off represents the ebb and flow of our stock markets. >> reporter: even with those drops, one thing to keep in mind, the long term. it's not about trying to time the market. it's likely today will bring another rocky opening with the dow futures way down. analysts say before acting to take a deep breath and remember the drop was expected given those record highs. serena marshall, abc news, washington. and now we want to get you a real-time update from our live desk. a look at the big board right now. you can see it's down about 71 points. that's only at 0.2% so that's
6:38 am
leveled out since what we saw about seven, eight minutes ago when the dow first opened this morning. it went down to about 260 points and now we're only down about 60 points so that's a leveling out. we're going to see if the sell-off continues today again on wall street as a whole or if things start to rebound as we are starting to see right now, of course, all of those markets across the world have followed suit. we mentioned the asian markets were down overnight as well, and we're going to track this throughout the day, sending out breaking market developments. you need to enable your push alerts and you'll get the notifications as they happen. >> jessica, thank you. on to other local news, there was a shooting near the pittsburg station just before 10:00 last night. the victim was driving his car when he was shot. he crashed into a pole in south wood drive. police were able to get hem out.
6:39 am
no word on his condition or potential suspects. santa clara county supervisors expected to put a petition to recall the judge in the brock turner case on the june ballot. the recall campaign against judge aaron perskey gathered almost 100,000 signatures, enough to qualify for the ballot. perskey sentenced the swimmer to just six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on campus. election code requires the petition be put on the ballot so today's is a formality. check out what the breezes did to our temperatures overnight. we're 13 degrees warmer at half moon bay. 14 in livermore. 17 in fairfield. even 10 in napa. 8 in palo alto. where does that put us? in the south bay, from 45 in alum rock, same thing in saratoga. cambria park, 60. 55 in san jose. 48 right now in newark to 60 in danville and fairfield.
6:40 am
55 in san francisco. the same thing in napa. look at the bottom. 46 degrees. looks like a lot of traffic out there this morning. let's talk about your commute planner not seeing fog, no clouds. sunshine definitely will have the glasses. breezy in the hills. if you're driving and taking mass transit and you want the polarized sunglasses on the bay so it reduces the glare off the water. dress the kids for about 52 to 60. one of those days where make sure they bring the hoodie home. look at these temperatures by 11:00. 66 to 67. by the time they're finished with school, 66 at the coast but mid-70s around the bay and inland. i'll tell you how much longer this record-setting temperatures will last. let's see what sue is watching. >> we'll check now. yes, metering lights are on. typical for your morning drive. the car-poolers are getting by just fine as you can see. if your commute is from hercules into the city or any points,
6:41 am
there's urbaner to see what your commute will be. you can gauge it at about 40 minutes into san francisco. most of that is delayed at the toll plaza there. speaking of toll plazas, an earlier accident is long gone now but still very slow approaching the toll plaza from 880 and that earlier accident north 880 near 23rd still has things very slow along the nasty nimitz and we're heading down to san jose where there was an accident northbound 101 near 13th. that is still partially blocking a lane there and you can see your northbound 101 commute is really a grind. you can try to take 87 but that looks bad, too. 280 over there looks better. if you have to stay on 101 and give yourself an extra 20 to 30 minutes this morning. >> sue, thank you. happening today financial relief could be coming for sonoma county residents impacted by the fires. dorito drama. now the company is responding to

6:46 am
natasha, reggie, back to you. all right. do not look at your 401(k) and do not panic yet. >> we're seeing a roller coaster on wall street. amy hollyfield live in san francisco's financial district. amy? >> reporter: reggie, just stay calm. that's what all the analysts are telling us saying we can get through this. yes, it was difficult to watch it drop yesterday. 1,175 points, but financial analysts say they do not consider this a crash. experts are saying there's no need to panic or sell. just stay focused on your long-term strategy. don't abandon that. the hot economy was possibly a little too hot and needed to cool down a bit. >> feel like it's a short-term market correction that is happening, and it's going to provide an opportunity for people that maybe didn't quite get in and missed the boat now are going to have an opportunity to invest. >> reporter: he says consider buying right now especially
