with the latest on this for us. kate, can you hear us? >> reporter: the good news is this neighborhood is now safe, according to to the fire department, you can see pg&e construction crews are working hard to repair the gas main that ruptured around 3:00 this afternoon. it was a four-inch gas line and there were crews working in the street. you can see a big hole, take a look at sky 7 earlier today, that's where those crews were working. they immediately cleared the area, called pg and e and it was less than two hours before they had this situation under control. they did have to evacuate 12 buildings and there were a number of people coming home from work who couldn't get home because this area was blocked off. i spoke to a man who lives right near the scene and was trying to get home when it happened. >> they said it could be an hour or who knows. that's kind of tough. there's a couple of friends of mine who live across the street

who have animals who are still sitting inside. i actually called all my flat mates and told them to get out so they're all out. so we're just in wait and see mode. it. >> reporter: fortunately everybody was able to get home safely and actually before this incident ended, the fire department was going into homes with the homeowner's keys to try and get their dogs and cats out safely because they didn't know how long this incident was going to last. we are getting reports that there was one person who had some respiratory troubles because of the gas leak and also neighbors have been complaining about the construction that's been going on on this street for quite a while. a scare today at a south bay mall when smoke started pouring from a parking structure. people in a passing car captured this video of smoke coming from a parking garage near west fair

fally mall. and from santa rosa tonight, a story of animal rescue and a disagreement unlike any other after the california wildfires. the latest on the custody battle over a cat. >> reporter: shelby wallace loves her cats, just ask her about 3-year-old darcy. she has a heavy heart because she cannot do the same with darcy's brother mack. the family lost two homes in the sonoma firestorm. darcy she found and mack too, but here's where the story gets complicated. >> they named him phoenix. >> reporter: he showed up in the animal shelter with the nickname aspen. when shelby saw those pictures after a long search, the family went to claim him, only to find that mack had found a new home. shelby pressed her case, the shelter did a dna test. >> we got the tests back and it

reward for whoever through a vacaville dog out of a car. rex's family said somebody had tied his feet up with rope before shoving him out on to i-80 in vacaville. this happened around 9:00 p.m. last thursday. the car was a 2011 or 2012 toyota preoius. several homeless people and their advocates pleaded with the court to keep the shelter open. >> i used to hang out on the streets a lot. this shelter has helped me a lot. >> it's more safer for kids there, and it's more better to keep it open so there's no people out there sleeping in the trees and bushes.
