struck the east coast of the island yesterday. i also quickly want to update you on the situation there. the death toll has climbed to six. meanwhile, 256 people were hurt and 88 are still missing this morning. several high-rise buildings, including a hotel and streets, sustained significant damage. the earthquake hit yesterday while most people were sleeping at 1:30 in the morning there. it could actually be felt as far away as 100 miles away in the capital city of taipei. back to you. thank you, jessica. a mountain view tutor accused of lewd acts with two children faces arraignment as police search for more possible victims. he was a volunteer tutor. on friday, police received a call from a parent whose child was molested by him. an investigation turned up another victim. the students are 10 and 11 years old.

funding measure and senate leaders are close to a sweeping two-year budget deal. kenneth moton, abc news washington. 4:35 now. billionaire steve wynn is out following allegations of sexual misconduct. his departure comes a week after he stepped down as the financial chief of the republican national committee. the "wall street journal" reports that a number of women say wynn harassed or assaulted them and that one case led to a $7.5 million settlement. the casino mogul denies these allegations. wynn is actually blaming his ex-wife for launching a smear campaign against him. it is official. santa clara county superior court judge aaron persky will face a recall on june 5th. he sparked nationwide outrage after sentencing brock turner, stanford swimmer, to six months in jail for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. the county board of supervisors approved the special election, triggering strong reaction from both sides of the debate.

you can do to protect your privacy and 7 on your side's michael finney working on a report. he'll have much more tonight on abc 7 news. president trump has ordered the pentagon to plan a military parade through washington, d.c. he was inspired by last year's ba ba style day in paris. he wants to show appreciation for the military. that would include marching troops, rolling tanks and other military equipment. we don't know yet what this would cost. veterans day is being floated as a possible date. 4:43 now. a new survey says you are seeing fewer drivers using cell phones behind the wheel. the state's office of traffic safety says less than 4% of drivers pick up and use their devices. that's about half the number from a year ago. part of the reason is that a law went into effect in january of 2017 prohibiting drivers from holding cell phones for any

reason while on the road. more of us are aware of the dangers of distracted driving and using hands-free technology. towels were wrapped around emergency call boxes like these. they're supposed to be completely operational. what's up with the towels? we asked reporter lyanne melendez to solve that mystery. >> reporter: is this a prank? that's probably the first thing that comes to mind when you see a towel wrapped around a fire call box held by electrical tape. >> i have no idea what it is. i'm not comfortable with it there. >> reporter: drive around san francico and you'll find several of the boxes with the same towels. why the cheap dish towel? was there a sale at k-mart? why not have a sign saying warning, out of service? >> you never worked for the city. i'm sorry. >> reporter: city workers from the department of technology were supposed to cover the

broken call boxes with custom-made bags like this one. but they ran out of them. here's what the department told us. in the abundance of caution to keep residents from trying to use out of service boxes, the only equipment the technicians had available were towels and tape, which they used to wrap the boxes. the boxes still use the old 19th century telegraph technology sending a message to the nearest fire station. the department of technology maintains them. they didn't want to go on camera. neither did the san francisco fire department. but the firefighters union did. >> i don't know why they're not talking about this issue because this is a city that prides itself on redundancy in the case of an emergency. the street boxes are part of that redundancy where if cell phones go down and power goes out, there's still a way to call for help. >> reporter: the supervisor aaron pesce kin was so surprised
