aides has resigned after two ex-wives have come forward with abuse allegations. staff secretary rob porter is denying their claims, but there are pictures and now big questions. why was he allowed to take and keep this job? cecilia vega has the latest. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. so many new questions and very burning questions for this white house this morning. just how long did this west wing know about these domestic violence allegations facing one of president trump's top aides? white house sources tell abc news high-level aides have known about the domestic violence accusations against staff secretary rob porter for months, all the while porter playing a prominent role in the west wing. but those sources say aides were not aware of the extent of the accusations until porter's two ex-wives told their stories to "the daily mail" and the online publication "the intercept." his first wife, colbie holderness releasing a photo of her black and blue eye saying porter punched her in the face more than a decade ago. and overnight his second wife, jennie willoughby telling "the

washington post" this story of how porter allegedly attacked her in the shower just after their first anniversary. >> he came and grabbed me by the shoulders here and pulled me out of the shower in a rage and immediately on seeing the terror in my face retracted and apologized. >> reporter: porter resigning abruptly saying in a statement, these outrageous allegations are simply false. i took the photos and the reality behind them is nowhere close to what is being described. i have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims. the white house says no one forced porter out. >> i think that was a personal decision that rob made and one that he was not pressured to do but one that he made on his own. >> reporter: he is also romantically linked to hope hicks, white house communications director. the couple recently spotted together out on the town in this dailymail.com photo. when the story broke chief of

staff john kelly called porter a man of true integrity and honor. overnight kelly issued a second statement, now saying he was shocked by the allegations that there is no place for domestic violence and i stand by my previous comments and believe every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation. porter's ex-wives paint a disturbing picture. his first wife tells "the intercept" he would lay on top of me shaking me. he graduated to choking me, not ever hard enough to make me pass out or frankly to leave marks, but it was frightening and dehumanizing. his second wife tells abc news that she wrote this blog post about her four-year marriage to porter saying the first time he called me an expletive was on our honeymoon. in 2010, she filed for an emergency protective order against porter telling authorities he punched in the glass on the door. i called the police afraid he would break in. >> does the president have any concerns about these domestic violence allegations raised against rob porter? >> i haven't spoken to him about specific concerns. >> you haven't talked to the president about this?

>> about whether or not he has specific concerns, i haven't asked him that question, cecilia. >> has he seen the photos of rob porter's ex-wife with the black eye? >> i don't know. >> reporter: we still don't know whether the president has seen those photos. they have been in the media. it would be hard to imagine he has not. now yesterday in that very briefing, the white house said rob porter would stay on the job in order to oversee a smooth transition. i am now told there is a renewed sense of urgency to get him out of this job. it sounds like he will be leaving much sooner than expected. >> cecilia, credible allegations like this are usually disqualifying for a top white house job using security clearances not only because they're horrific but, because they make the person vulnerable to blackmail, but the white house is having a very hard time explaining when they got this information, what they did with it, why rob porter was allowed to remain in this job. >> reporter: and let's not forget this is a white house that's had a tough time answering a lot of questions about relationships with women over the last year here, of course, you saw sarah sanders

there really struggling to answer some of these questions. that certainly will continue on today. one of the big questions right now has to do with general kelly, the chief of staff, he has repeatedly now praised a man accused of beating his wives multiple times, a lot of questions, george. >> so many to come. thanks very much. robin. the white house also watching that budget battle in congress. lawmakers are racing to strike a deal before midnight to avoid another government shutdown. the senate agreeing on a breakthrough bipartisan plan but house democratic leader nancy pelosi saying no way in a speech for the record books. our senior congressional correspondent mary bruce has more on capitol hill for us. good morning, mary. >> reporter: rob yirobin, good morning. the president said he wanted a shutdown over immigration. but lawmakers are ignoring his request, instead this morning they're poised to do something we haven't seen in quite some time, pass a bipartisan spending bill. this senate deal would include big boosts in defense and domestic spending, including billions to fight the opioid crisis, fund child care for

low-income families and help the nation's veterans. but, robin, what's not included in this two-year deal, any action on immigration or funding for the president's border wall. robin. >> now, what will the house do and both republicans and democrats have voiced some opposition to it. so, what are the chances of a shutdown at midnight? >> reporter: yeah, robin, i have talked to many house conservatives who are furious over how much this deal would add to the deficit. they say it is reckless, irresponsible, calling it a debt junkie's dream, and others say they cannot support it without assurances to act on immigration. leader nancy pelosi took to the house floor yesterday for eight hours speaking out about the need to protect dreamers. breaking -- actually a new record on the hill. but despite all of this, all signs indicate that this bill is likely to pass later today, avoiding another shutdown, robin. >> could be a long one. let's talk to jon karl for more on this and, jon, i was watching in the briefing room

yesterday with sarah sanders, talking about the president's 24-hour turnaround on whether or not he wanted a shutdown. he doesn't get his wall funding. he does get what he wants in defense but this budget deal also just eviscerates the president's budget. >> reporter: absolutely, and it was mystifying, frankly, to see the president one day say that he would love to have a government shutdown to push for his border wall because security is so important and then, literally while he was saying that negotiators in the senate, democrat and republican, banging out this deal that makes no reference whatsoever to the border wall. so, george, i tried to find out what the president's position is on this, if it had flipped as it apparently has, because he endorsed this budget deal and the white house is not acknowledging a flip. they do have one more chance to push for a shutdown. this sets the level of spending for the next two years, but by the end of march they need to come up with the specifics of the spending and, if there is no border wall in the specifics that are outlined, he could once

again threaten a shutdown. >> and that's after the dreamer deadline as well. meantime, jon, the questions about chief of staff john kelly, of course, this rob porter incident is happening on his watch and you're even seeing some in the president's orbit taking shots at him. >> reporter: you are. a lot of second-guessing particularly outside of kelly's leadership here. people mystified as to how he could call kelly a man of honor and integrity even after these allegations were out, detailed allegations were out and even yesterday in the briefing room you heard sarah sanders say that he was not forced out. in other words, kelly even after all that was known, according to the press secretary, could have stayed here and stayed on the job. >> incredible. jon karl, thanks very much. robin. george, overseas now as we gear up for the winter olympics, north korea is out with a new show of force this morning. its leader overseeing a military parade in the capital with his wife by his side marking 70 years since the founding of the military.

kim said the parade marks north korea's emergence as a global power and called on his troops to maintain readiness against the united states. in asia this week vice president mike pence has promised aggressive, new sanctions, michael. >> thank you, robin. north korea is sending athletes to the olympics and kim jong-un's sister to the olympics as well in south korea, and the opening ceremony tomorrow. these could be the most secure games ever. our senior national correspondent matt gutman is in south korea with a closer look at how they're preparing and good morning to you, matt. matt, we don't see much security around you now, but you are in one of the most secure and protected places in the entire world right now. >> reporter: that's right, michael. you can tell there is a police bus behind me at that barricade but the profile here is very low. that, despite the fact that there are twice as many security personnel here as there were at the previous olympic games, 60,000 of them, 50,000 troops alone, now, in coordination with u.s. security personnel, south

koreans have been drilling for every possible eventuality from a biochemical attack to kidnappings to bombings. this morning, before the games, a battery of security exercises. in the shadow of nuclear north korea, south korean special forces taking on role playing terrorists. even using attack drones swooping down to snatch possible bomb-carrying enemy drones from the sky. here in seoul the threat of missiles from north korea and its 10,000-plus artillery pieces and many more rockets is so ever present that every subway station here doubles as a shelter. the south koreans are blanketing venues with the largest number of security forces ever for the olympics. an estimated 60,000 personnel including 50,000 soldiers. how different are the games here versus the games, let's say in rio in 2016? >> well, we -- both countries

have outstanding support. they have the police, the services, the intelligence services, the military to help support the games overall. >> reporter: it's assistant secretary of state mike evanoff's job to keep the estimated 20,000 american tourists and over 200 athletes here safe. >> we don't believe that north korea was hacked but we're always having a contingency for that. >> reporter: there are more than 100 u.s. personnel on hand to ensure the physical security of american athletes and at the embassy at seoul, this joint operation center, an alphabet soup of american agencies from the cia to the tsa monitoring a flood of intelligence. >> and, matt, i got to say these security forces, everyone talks about how hard these athletes train but security trains like they are athletes themselves. they are really prepared for this. >> reporter: they're tremendously prepared for this. they've been preparing for years for this event and, in fact, they have also installed 800

surveillance cameras here. there are drones in the sky including those attack drones prepared to intercept anything out of the sky, but there is some good news here and that is you heard that assistant secretary of state saying that the threat of an attack here is minimal and the reason for that, michael, is that the north koreans are participating in these games. it is doubtful that they're going to try to sabotage them, michael. >> all right, thank you, matt. >> still a tense situation. okay, michael, thanks. we're going to get to the latest on the search for a serial killer in las vegas. police believe the same person shot four victims killing two of them. abc's marcus moore is tracking the case from las vegas this morning. marcus, surveillance video key to this case. >> reporter: george, one of these attacks happened just off of the las vegas strip. investigators believe the killer is specifically targeting the city's homeless.

overnight police work to track down a cold-blooded killer, security cameras capturing this terrifying moment police say the suspect fired multiple rounds murdering a homeless man in las vegas in his most recent attack. >> it really does seem to be, captain, with this incredibly clear video of the vehicle and then the video of the suspect, someone has to know this guy. >> that's what we think, too. we think that someone knows who this person is or they may have talked about it. >> reporter: the attacks spanning four days. the first shooting around 12:30 a.m. on january 29th in logangale, about an hour north of las vegas. the suspect reportedly asked for directions, then fired several rounds wounding a man outside a convenience store. about 2 1/2 hours later, at 3:06 a.m., the shooter killed his first victim. then at 7:13, targeting a third man near the famous las vegas strip, that victim shot in the head but survived. and then four days later, 64-year-old james lewis, a homeless veteran, was murdered as he slept. this morning, his daughter is heartbroken and angry. >> as much as i'm hurt, i'm angry, i'm absolutely angry that people that have nothing, you

want to do bodily harm to them and take their lives. it's just -- i can't wrap my head around it. >> reporter: the vegas shootings bear a striking resemblance to serial attacks in tampa where investigators spent five weeks hunting for the man behind four slayings within a one-mile radius last fall. and a series of shootings in phoenix where police are still searching for a suspect in nine murders over a three-week period. back here in las vegas, there are cameras all over this city. investigators right now have a lot of very good video of that suspect and that suspect vehicle. they still don't have the license plate and the captain told me if they can get that number i it would be a game-changer in their investigation, george. >> let's hope for that. thanks very much. michael. now to philadelphia where they're gearing up for that enormous celebration. massive parade to celebrate the eagles' first super bowl win. my guy brad over there next to the camera is dancing because he's an eagles fan. and as we tell you, 2 million people are expected to be there.

they've been lining up since 9:00 a.m. the fans are coming all the way from hawaii to be there. look at the lines, that's early this morning. they're growing outside train stations and the city is also warning that cell service could be down with so many people in one area and the mayor also had a warning, he said do not bring backpacks or beer. they will be taken from you but, with that being said, bud light is making good on a deal they made. they made this deal before the super bowl and they are providing free beer to adults of age but it's at 25 bars along the parade route. what could go wrong with that, george? these conditions are leading to a lot of accidents. >> yes, and it's been a busy season for the northeast. erie, pennsylvania, picked up three more inches just over that, making them 152 inches for the season, the most ever recorded and we've got another storm on the way. overnight, the northeast slammed. icy roads flipping semis and overturning cars in southern pennsylvania. outside new york city, this major bridge shut down for hours. >> they closed it down. really big accident. >> waiting to get into work now has been a little more than an hour. >> reporter: icy roads in connecticut sending this fedex truck sliding bouncing off a parked car and outside washington, d.c., watch as this pickup crashes into a bakery. >> i started applying my brakes as i came in. ice took hold and the truck had a mind of its own and went through the building. >> reporter: this plane at baltimore's airport sliding off the runway forcing an

vulnerable to blackmail. and in philadelphia, they're gearing up for that giant super bowl parade. 2 million people expected there in the streets to celebrate the eagles. you can see the crowds already growing. this morning is going to be some day in philly. >> they've been waiting for this for a long time. but we're going to begin this half hour with supermodel kate upton going public with those allegations of sexual misconduct against guess co-founder paul marciano detailing an incident at a shoot. she says it crossed the line. abc's linsey davis is here with that story for us. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning, robin. paul marciano denies the allegations that upton has made against him but now it's no longer he said/she said. photographer yu tsai told "time" magazine he witnessed it and corroborated the details with abc news saying, i applaud and stand with kate for giving voice to her experience and strength to others. she's the superstar model, "sports illustrated" cover girl. famous for her all-american looks. and marriage to baseball superstar justin verlander.

but this morning, kate upton is speaking out about the abuse she says she was forced to endure. according to upton as an 18-year-old she suffered sexual misconduct at the hands of paul marciano, the co-founder of guess. >> sensuality. >> reporter: the iconic brand known for launching the careers of anna nicole smith and claudia schiffer. upton tells "time" magazine that at a lingerie shoot paul marciano forcibly grabbed my breasts and starting feeling them. after i pushed him away he said, i'm making sure they're real and forcibly grabbed the back of my head so i could not move and started kissing my face and my neck. added, i had two options to do everything i could to wiggle away and avoid the pursuit or punch the ceo of guess, so i decided to just wiggle away. the magazine reports that upton said the next month she refused advances from the now 65-year-old telling "time" as soon as i went up to my hotel

room paul started calling me, asking to come up and see how my room is. i politely declined several times. after several denials i just turned off my phone and locked the door and tried to get some sleep. i was terrified. according to the article, the day after that incident upton claims she was fired. someone had called my agency to say i had gotten fat and would not be needed on set. upton is quoted as saying i was devastated. upton spoke out to tmz recently about the frequent abuse of power in the modeling industry. >> what do you think should be done to keep people in positions of power from abusing that power? >> i think a lot of people around them know about it and need to speak out. >> really? so think -- you're advising models to step out. >> not models, the people around them. >> reporter: she reportedly said the next year she was invited back for another guess project but marciano's behavior changed drastically. he was outwardly rude and degrading the entire time. he said i was disgusting and started telling people how unprofessional i was by spreading rumors that i was drunk on set and partying every night which, of course, i wasn't.

i was then told to leave because paul had said get that fat pig off my set. marciano denied the claims to abc news overnight calling them absolutely false and preposterous claiming, i have never been alone with kate upton. i have never touched her inappropriately and adding i fully support the #metoo movement. at the same time, i will not allow others to defame me and tarnish my reputation. upton says those experiences impacted her deeply. it took a huge toll on my confidence and self-worth. i wanted to quit modeling. i got through it because of the strong support of my family and close friends. marciano also told abc news he has pledged to guess and its board of directors my full support and cooperation with a fair and impartial investigation and i have complete trust and confidence that the faceless allegations will prove the accusations against me are untruthful, but that photographer is key because he's also substantiating what upton has said. >> yes, he is, and kate upton will be here exclusively on

we are back with that new study about the health benefits of smart devices like the apple watch and fitbit. they could be used to detect signs of diabetes and other problem. gio is here with all the details. good morning, gio. >> reporter: they're excited about the huge possibilities. doctors who worked on the study say the tiny technology could lead to early detection of diabetes. for some wearable devices like the apple watch are already at the center of everyday activities especially fitness. but now, a potential medical breakthrough. the medical data company cardiogram claiming the apple watch, along with other smart devices like fitbit and android wear, could be used to track more than your steps, maybe even track signs of diabetes and other diseases. >> this is the first study showing that ordinary consumer wearables, things like apple watches can detect early signs of diabetes.

>> reporter: brandon ballinger worked with doctors at the university of california, at san francisco, for the new study. the company took heart data for more than 14,000 users of its cardiogram app singling out the users who said they had already been diagnosed with diabetes and the app learned the characteristics of their heart rate patterns, then made an accurate diabetes reading in 85% of the people. >> this was based, one, where we just assessed our accuracy at detecting people who already knew they had diabetes. and then phase two will be actually diagnosing people who don't know that they have diabetes. >> reporter: the designers say they also want to teach the app to detect other conditions like hypertension and sleep apnea. we've seen information from such devices save lives before. like high school teacher jeff bravo who suffered a seizure. his fitbit told doctors exactly when his heart rate became irregular, exactly the info they needed. >> they shocked my heart, it was able to go back to a normal rhythm and i was sent home later

drowsy driving may play a much larger role in crashes than previously thought. abc's david kerley has the details. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, michael. this new study suggesting the effects of drowsy drafting underreported and the study is out from the aaa safety foundation and put cameras in cars to watch drivers who are fatigued and we've seen what happens. this new study suggesting that 10%, one out of ten crashes are related to drowsy driving. now, government statistics say only about 1% to 2% are due to fatigue. aaa is hoping its study and no pun intended here is a wake-up call about this problem. the government, while not commenting on the specific research, says it has a plan to improve its data collection. everybody agreeing, michael, drowsy driving is a serious problem, and drivers need to pay attention. don't underestimate it. >> yeah, we have to recognize that it is a serious deal. we have more now on the celebration. very long time in the making. 2 million philadelphia eagles fans expected to crowd the

that, lara. we're going to turn now to our "gma" cover story, the secret groups on facebook offering a community of support for nearly a billion people worldwide. this morning, paula faris is looking at one that helps families dealing with addiction and, paula, this comes as we're seeing a sharp rise in the rate of fatal overdoses in the u.s. >> we certainly are. sobering statistics about drug use in this country. a recent study says half of americans have someone in their family or a close friend who is addicted to drugs or has been in the past. now, this private group that we are exploring today is there to help families through one of their worst nightmares. >> i found a strength in numbers, a kinship, a fellowship. >> because it's not just about the addict, it involves the whole family. >> when my active heroin-addicted son finally admitted he had a problem, i didn't know where to turn, where

to educate myself, so i turned to facebook. >> reporter: propelled by an addiction crisis that touches almost half of all americans, the facebook group affected by addiction is now a vital gathering place for addicts and their loved ones, where family members and especially moms help one another. >> we can come together, get ideas, find out information, vent if we need to and nobody is going to judge us. >> my name is jackie. i'm the parent of a recovering addict. seven long years of addiction and nine treatment centers to get where we are today. >> reporter: jackie is sharing the battle to save her daughter caitlyn from the devastating grip of heroin. >> she's a person that everybody wanted to be friends with. until she got mixed up with the wrong ones. >> reporter: at age 13 caitlyn was drinking and using drugs. >> she started high school and she started dabbling with the pills. >> the xanax, percocets, molly and then, you know, went to heroin.

>> reporter: at 18, she moved out of the family home. >> i was living with the person that, you know, was giving me the heroin. i was getting high. i was using, living life as a pleased. >> reporter: but an intervention at her high school and finding a friend dead from an overdose shook caitlyn to the core. she's now 15 months clean and sober, 20 years old. she has spent almost a third of her life dealing with addiction and recovery. >> i've been through a lot, especially for my age, i should be dead like i shouldn't even be sitting here right now. >> reporter: the facebook group even supporting those setbacks but especially the celebrations as jackie and caitlyn reach each milestone of continued sobriety. >> each time she went to treatment i would pray it would be the one that worked and this one did. >> reporter: the group helps families navigate the challenges of insurance coverage and often helps them find treatment. >> our son was in 12 years of addiction. he is now 10 months clean. >> there have been hundreds, if

not thousands of people that have gotten treatment as a result of this community. >> addiction is really a somewhat taboo topic people don't talk about very much and being able to find that community online allows people to open up. >> reporter: jackie checks in on the group several types a day and says she's paying it forward. >> i tell other addicts that are new to recovery or still struggling when they post on the site to keep fighting the fight and stay strong. even if it's just for one day, one hour, one minute or one second at a time. just for today. >> and the rate of fatal drug overdoses rose over 137% from 2000 to 2014. this is such an epidemic. but what is really striking about the group, not just the moms of the addicts helping one another but they're helping the addicts themselves so truly helping everyone involved in this horrifying situation. >> the more support, the better you're going to be for it. right now, paula, thank you very much for that.

addicts, and we gathered once a week to share our experience, our hope, our fears, our anger, all those emotions that you feel when your child is out of control and you don't know what to do about it. >> but you actually were proactive. you went in and said, hey, i need to change some things. i need to understand this better as much as i can to help kristina. kristina, what other options are out there besides online support groups? >> sure, so there's so much more available today than ever. so i got sober 25 years ago actually before the internet which makes me sound incredibly old. and i'm not that old. but there's so much help now. there's community support. of course, there's 12-step recovery programs. there's websites and apps. there's more help now available than ever. and, you know, addiction is human suffering and the greatest medicine for any human suffering of any disease is connection and community to others.

so any way that families can reach out and find help and support is imperative. >> and, constance, what advice do you have for mothers who are dealing with children who are battling addiction? >> well, as you showed on your piece, there are options reaching out, having a community is vital, absolutely vital in this. we feel shame and what we're finding now is that, if we can say what's going on in our life, we find that many other people are experiencing the same thing. so when you have a community, you say, oh, i'm not the only one, it's very beneficial. >> i tell you what, you both coming here and sharing your story really helps a lot. i've been affected by this as well in my family and it's so great to hear you talk about it because it really helps so many and thanks for sharing your story. >> thank you. >> thank you for having us. and so many of you have been weighing in on this series. you've been asking a lot of questions. we're going to answer some of
