4:01 pm
garofalo is a regular here. >> i'm so excited by him, he's very personable, he's very humble, and i think he's going to fit in really well with the 49ers. >> reporter: jimmy g. has awakened his position, just as the jimmy g. on fire role excited his pallet. >> i didn't watch my niners because they were kind of terrible. so when jimmy took over, i said, boycott is over. >> reporter: a photo of jimmy g. even hangs on the wall but without an autograph. the owner of a memorabilia shop says that jimmy g. autographs could top $10,000. >> reporter: selling the rights to jimmy g.'s autograph reportedly is under way, and that means he's going to be making a lot more than $147 million just from the 49ers.
4:02 pm
by the way, $1 for every sale of the jimmy g. on fire roll is going to go to a charity of jimmy g., whatever he chooses. now let's hear from the man himself, jimmy garofalo and the 49ers on why they decided to do this deal. >> reporter: garofalo was acquired from a second-round pick from the patriots, he took a 1 and 10 patriots slump and turned that into a five game winning streak. >> people are going to have a lot of ideas on what could have happened. what i'm concerned about is that he's right here and he's signed for five years and i love that. >> i want to get this deal done fast as possible. it's only going to help our team going forward, and it 75 degrees, it's not a snowstorm like chicago. so we just came from that, so i can peek speak on that, it's a

4:04 pm
garofalo's contract and his former teammate brady, the boston herald ran a bogus report about braidly. saying that tom brady would hold out unless he got a contract that garofalo received. apparently he was duped. now we have more coverage on garofalo and his big payday, including the little minifumble he made in today's news conference, the unfortunate reference he made. a surprise settlement made this morning in the high profile acquisition between -- self-driving cars and about the culture of silicon valley. >> i was shocked.
4:05 pm
i was very shocked. >> cn er nrwaymo's lawyer got u said they had reached a settlement. >> reporter: the settlement has waymo paying uber $20 million in equity. >> this lawsuit really was about allegedly stolen trade secrets. >> reporter: secrets from google's self-driving car project that later became waymo. files were stolen, but intellectual property attorney says it's not about the files. >> somebody could have information in their head and that could still be considered a trade secret. >> companies want to recruit the best talent but where's the line between talent and information. >> you're going to have certain know how that an employee gathers at the prior place of employment. that's in fact why you want that particular employee to come. >> reporter: the question of
4:06 pm
stolen trade secrets remains unanswered, but there are answers to other questions about what went on inside uber. ub uber's founder took the stand and spoke under oath. >> about the inside story about uber's you culture. travis would say something like the second place loser, and the golden time is over, it's wartime. >> reporter: he said if the trial had proceeded to its conclusion, it's clear uber would have prevailed. waymo says it's pleased with the settlement and is committed to working with uber to make sure that each company develops it's own technology. at 8:17 this morning, we sent out a push alert on the settlement. and you can be the first to know the minute breaking news happens. to get stories like this, make

4:16 pm
we want to know you're dealing about this roller coaster in the market. so go to your market and go to abc7news.com, you can express your feelings with emojis, you've got everything from love it to ahhh and as you vote, emojis will pop-up on the screen, it's kind of like instagram. you can vote as many times as you like so you can get a lot of emojis going. when you think about that and your portfolio, on what all this means for your investments and your 401(k), we are joined by michael finney. >> i appreciate you joining us here, you're always my go-to guy. pretty wild week. >> crazy week, if i can use a sports analogy, we suffered a concussion, now we're going through a concussion protocol. >> really? wow. >> we're up and down today,
4:17 pm
we're trying to find our place. >> are bigger dips inevitable? are we for sure going to keep going down? >> this is a promise, every year we have a mean 10% negative, its inevitable. last year we had a perfect storm. now we're getting into 2018, moving from a policy year to a political year. just last week, janet yellen had her last fomc, federal reserve committee meeting, and she said that we're probably going to have three to four rate increases. she's been saying that all the time. but it's the first time the market has really heard this. so it scares the market. it means that there might be inflation. and actually on about the same day, the department of labor statistics came out with wages up 2.8%. so when wages go up, you have to increase the price of goods and that creates inflation. >> is your extra paranoia this time because we had such low inflation for so long, the businesses are looking at it and
4:18 pm
going, how do i do this? >> absolutely, we have forgotten that there is volatility in the markets. i mean it doesn't take very long, last year was a perfect storm. we have been down 10%, today if you take a look at the indexes, we're down a little less than 10, if we get into the 20% area, then this really nice bull market is ending and we call it a bear market. >> you call it a bear market at 20%? >> exactly. are you more likely to keep going down then? >> i think the market will figure itself out in the next few days. and the reason is, if you go back to the economy, which is the real indicator, this is how we get paid, the economy is doing very well. last friday we announced 88 straight months of job growth. we are 88th in the world for our ain't to create great jobs. unemployment is very low, we're predicting probably going down sub 4%.
4:19 pm
our gdp, chugging along at 4.5%, we are predicting 3. these are reality checks, all the s&p 500 earnings, all the companies, at least 80% of them have exceeded the expectations. if you have a bad kmeconomy you don't see those thinks. the stock market is very speculative, so we have the reality of the economy, and the market is speculative and we have fears of inflation. >> let me ask you a final question, the rich guys always tell me, buy and hold and somebody is selling, isn't it the rich guys selling while i'm holding? >> for everybody selling, you got to have a buyer, now is an opportune time for these speculative investors to pick up some good deals. >> i'm still in concussion protocol. we're going to go to spencer christian here. for those of you, kristen doesn't want to look at how beautiful it is. because she's uncomfortable with
4:20 pm
that. >> i want you to take a look at the emojis. >> that's going too. but there's equal people freaking out as love. >> there's a lot of new loves. people feel better after hearing the interview. >> that was last year, you can't can complain about the way your stocks have done. >> i'm still afraid of the markets, i won't even go to safeway anymore. live doppler 7, a few thin high clouds around, but bright skies today and another record setting day, this is the ninth conservati consecutive day we have had record highs for the day. we're gradually retweeting in san francisco, after a high today of 76, we're down from 78 in san jose. we'll show you the records a little bit later. a beautiful view from our abc7 exploratorium camera, looking at those blue skies. and here are our forecast
